Plan items F4 (fuzz/plan.md) and W4.1–W4.5 (audit/plan.md) of the 2026-10-31 meta plan, as one PR. Task: [[tasks/harmony-2971]]. Owner decisions 3 (meta's options only before the command) and 6 (--tag no longer adds the workspace root; -i . adds it) are implemented here. W4.6 (context cache keys) is left out: wave 4 deletes the cache (decision 5).

What changes for users

Before After
meta -t backend git checkout -b x also branches the untagged root only the tagged repos; meta -i . -t backend … adds the root
meta -t backnd exec -- touch x runs in the root, exit 0 Error: --tag 'backnd' is no project's tag (from /ws/.meta.yaml): the tags are backend, frontend. exit 1, nothing runs
meta --tag "" exec … (an unset $TAG) runs in the root only Error: --tag '' names no tag; a blank inside a list (a,,b) is still dropped
meta -r -t rust exec … misses tools/cli (tagged rust) under an untagged tools nested projects match on their own tags
meta -t backend context, meta -i api context list every repo only the selected ones
meta -t backend project list lists everything (the tag was ignored) refused by name, as --include already was; same for project dependents. project check checks only the selected projects
meta git update --tag x, meta git worktree … with --tag before it: tag ignored refused by name, like --include/--exclude
meta -r project dependents terraform from the root: "Unknown project" (nested configs not read) infra/k8s (nested projects by their path from the root)
--include api from a nested workspace: error without saying which .meta.yaml was read every filter error names the config it read
meta --primary -i gateway exec … inside a set that holds the root: runs in the set (Directory does not exist …/.worktrees/fix/gateway) runs in the workspace the set was made from; meta --primary context shows the workspace
meta git pull --tag backend (README Quick Start): --tag reached git still reaches git (decision 3: after the command it is the command's); the README and docs now teach meta --tag backend git pull
meta exec --dry-run -- rm x: clap error suggesting -- --dry-run (which would run a program called --dry-run) tip: --dry-run is an option of meta itself: it goes before the command, as in meta --dry-run <COMMAND>
meta git status --short: --short dropped git status --short in each repo; meta git status --tag x gives --tag x to git
meta git update --dry-run: the flag after the command was dropped and update cloned for real Error: unexpected argument '--dry-run' found and Usage: meta git update, exit 1, nothing cloned
meta --help hand-rendered; meta help plugin list, meta help project list refused clap renders every help; meta help <command> […] works for built-ins and plugins

How filters combine now (union): --include and --tag each add repos: the ones --include names and the ones with any of the --tag tags (with neither, every repo). --exclude then removes. The root has no tags. Before, --tag narrowed first and --include narrowed that (docs/advanced_usage.md "Filter precedence"); -i . -t backend was an error. This is decision 6's "-i . adds the root". A tag is a typo only when no project of the configs read has it, so -t backend, frontend inside a set holding only backend repos is fine.

Capability and interface changes

Surface Change Why / who said yes
--tag selects the root no longer owner decision 6
meta's options after the command (meta git status --json, meta exec -v ls, meta context --verbose) refused, or given to the command owner decision 3; extract_global_flags and global = true deleted
--json after commands that print data kept as each command's own flag: context --json, plugin list --json, plugin search --json, git worktree … --json (new, needed by atc), project list/dependents --json (already) atc reads meta git worktree list --recursive --metadata-only --json
--tag + --include union instead of intersection: an old -t X -i Y selection widens from "Y if it has tag X" to "every repo with tag X, plus Y" owner's yes (2026-10-31, option 1: union), and decision 6 ("-i . adds the root"); the docs' "precedence" paragraph is rewritten
PluginRequestOptions gains tag_filters: Option<Vec<String>> (serde(default)), and filtered() additive: older plugins ignore it, an older host never sends it; keep-list says the wire format is a contract, plan F4 names this field
A plugin's own --help output no longer shown; meta renders the plugin's PluginInfo.help (or its commands) with escaping W4.4. main and #144 started the plugin a second time with --help and printed its stdout unescaped. A third-party plugin without help in its info shows its command list
meta git status a pass-through like other git commands (args reach git) W4.5; status.rs deleted
meta git update refuses arguments; --help is its own W4.5
meta -r context, meta --depth N context refused (they were silently ignored: context reads the nearest workspace only) F4/K2: a flag the user typed is honoured or refused out loud
meta exec a program whose name starts with - must come after -- clap, without allow_hyphen_values, so misplaced meta options are caught
meta exec with no command clap's "required arguments" error (exit 2) instead of Usage: meta exec -- <command> [args...] (exit 1) W4.3
meta plugin search/install/uninstall without a name clap's "required argument" error (exit 2) instead of a hand-written "Usage:" error (exit 1) W4.3
meta init, meta plugin, meta git worktree with no subcommand clap's help, exit 0 (as before) W4.3
Hand-written help printers deleted: 7 print_*_help, exec's inline help, init's InitCommand enum and print_init_help, the worktree overview and its parity test, the hand-written root help renderer W4.3

Help changes (clap renders all of it)

Command Now
meta --help, meta, meta help clap layout; every option described (--config has text now); plugin words added as commands with [plugin: git v…]; a closing line says meta's options go before the command
meta help <cmd> […] a built-in's help (meta help plugin list), or the plugin command's (meta help git worktree create = meta git worktree create --help); only the words before -- count, so meta help never runs a command
meta context --help, meta exec --help clap; exec keeps its "no shell" text and examples (after_help); context documents --json
meta init --help / meta init claude --help the subcommand list / --force, --update and examples
meta plugin --help clap; list and search document --json
meta git status --help the pass-through help ("Runs git status in each repo"), with meta's options marked "before git"
meta git update --help its own: "Clone the projects in .meta.yaml that aren't cloned yet, and those of the nested meta repos"
meta git worktree, meta git worktree --help clap's subcommand overview with --dry-run and --json; each subcommand's options in its own --help
meta git worktree <typo> clap's "unrecognized subcommand" plus the subcommand list
meta <plugin>, meta <plugin> --help help_text of the plugin's info, escaped, no second process

Code

  • meta_cli/src/repo_filter.rs: Filters, Candidate, Scope { root, config, repos, tags, nested }, Scope::select: the one place a selection is made. repo_names is gone (candidates carry their names).
  • meta_cli/src/worktree.rs: select_in_set (a set's checkouts, named and tagged by the set's config tree; a set without a config refuses --tag) and primary_dir (--primary: the cwd's twin in the workspace the set was made from, through the members' records, following sets made from sets).
  • meta_cli/src/main.rs: one target() → Target { root, dirs: Vec<PathBuf>, parallel }, one tail for exec and plugins, one Cli::request_options, one LoopConfig; extract_global_flags, matches_tag_filter, flatten_with_tag_filter, select_repos and the help printers deleted. clap's root help (meta --help, also meta --help exec) is caught (is_root_help) and printed with the commands plugins add; subcommands keep clap's own help.
  • meta_core/src/args.rs: the misplaced-option tip; a bare command group prints its help to stdout with exit 0.
  • meta_plugin_protocol: tag_filters, filtered(); parse_args treats a missing subcommand as help and adds the subcommand list to "unrecognized subcommand".
  • meta_project_cli: check applies the selection; list/dependents refuse filters; -r dependents walks the whole tree.
  • meta_git_cli: worktree --json; clap's worktree overview; git status pass-through; git update parsed.
  • Selection stays PathBuf to the loop (on fix(loop)!: one .looprc format; alias import keeps your settings; paths stay paths #145's Vec<PathBuf>); a non-UTF-8 directory sent to a plugin is an error naming it (the protocol is JSON).

Done-when evidence

Each repro script of F4's list was copied, pointed at a build in its own sandbox (own HOME, XDG_*, GIT_CONFIG_GLOBAL, META_DATA_DIR, TMPDIR, local bare remotes), and run against main and this branch. Excerpts:

  • chaos-08 main: --tag backend runs . (ws) and r1; --tag backnd runs . (ws), exit 0. Branch: ✓ ./r1: only; Error: --tag 'backnd' is no project's tag (from …/ws/.meta.yaml): the tags are backend. exit 1.
  • daily-05 main: root=feature/x api=feature/x web=main; -t no-such-tag git status runs in the root, rc=0. Branch: root=main api=feature/x web=main; the typo is an error, rc=1.
  • daily-06 main: -r -t rust runs in . and api. Branch: ./api and ./tools/cli.
  • daily-12 main: api only; Unknown project or alias: terraform from ws and ws/infra with -r. Branch: api, tools/cli; infra/k8s from both.
  • daily-17 main: list and context ignore the filters. Branch: project list refused by name; context rows | api | main | clean | backend | only.
  • daily-11 main: Directory does not exist: …/ws/.worktrees/fix/gateway; --primary context → # Meta Workspace: fix. Branch: runs in …/ws/gateway; # Meta Workspace: ws (2 repos).
  • newcomer-03: see the target revision below. meta --tag backend git status → ✓ ./api: only (main also ran the root).
  • newcomer-27b branch: Error: --include 'api' names none of the repos this command runs in (from …/ws/infra/.meta.yaml).
  • agent-11 (CLI part) branch: --tag oddd is an error and TYPO-RAN-HERE is not created; meta-mcp meta_git_push {"tag":"odd"} reports "success": true with the one repo (main also tried to push in the root, which has no remote, and reported failure).

W4: 1 and 2 as listed under Code (non-UTF-8 test below). 3 and 4: the help table. 5: tests below.

Target revision (newcomer-03). F4 asked that meta git pull --tag backend "gives a clear 'flags go before the command' error, or works, per the owner's rule". The owner's rule (decision 3) gives everything after the command to the command, so git gets --tag backend and fails in each repo with its own message (fatal: 'backend' does not appear to be a git repository); meta can't tell git's --tags abbreviation from a misplaced meta option without a list of git's options. What was done instead: the README Quick Start and every doc example now put meta's options first, and commands meta parses itself (exec, context, plugin, init, and through clap the plugin commands meta adapts) refuse a misplaced option by name. Cost: a reader of an old example still gets git's error.

Tests

New, each failing on main (1e857c6, before #145) and passing here:

  • bats: --tag never selects the root, a tag no project has is an error, -i . adds the root (exec.bats); nested tag under an untagged parent with -r, and the hint without -r; filter errors name the config; options before the command / after it belong to the command (exec.bats); context applies the selection and neither reads nor writes the cache while filtered (context.bats); --tag git command skips the root, git status ARGS, git update refusing arguments, own help for both (git.bats); project check applies and dependents refuses filters, project list refuses --tag (project_list.bats); --primary inside a set (worktree.bats).
  • Rust: plugin_help_comes_from_its_info_never_from_running_it_with_help (control characters escaped, the plugin never started with --help), a_directory_name_that_is_not_utf8_runs_in_that_directory (Linux: macOS file systems refuse such names), recursive_dependents_cover_nested_projects_by_path, and repo_filter unit tests for the rule (union, root, typo vs. real tag outside a set, nested tags, config names).
  • Existing tests that encoded the old behaviour were changed: --tag nonexistent running in the root, flags after built-ins (context --verbose, project check --recursive), the worktree overview's sections, clap's message texts.

Run here: cargo nextest run --workspace 618/618, all bats files 547/547, cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets --all-features -D warnings clean, cargo fmt --check clean; all with HOME, XDG_*, GIT_CONFIG_GLOBAL and META_DATA_DIR in a sandbox. One meta-mcp test (stopping_the_server_lets_a_rollback_finish) timed out once under machine load and passed twice alone; it doesn't touch this change.

atc's inputs, byte-identical on harmony (main build vs this branch, same sandboxed HOME, plugins from each build): meta project list --recursive --json (15,791 bytes) and meta git worktree list --recursive --metadata-only --json (6,794 bytes, measured again by a reviewer; it grows with harmony's worktree sets): cmp reports no difference.

Driven by hand in a sandboxed shell (branch build first on PATH, own HOME/XDG/GIT_CONFIG_GLOBAL/META_DATA_DIR):

live$ meta --tag backend git checkout -b release
✓ ./api:
Switched to a new branch 'release'
✓ ./worker:
Switched to a new branch 'release'
2 commands complete
live$ git branch --show-current; git -C web branch --show-current
main
main
live$ meta --tag backnd exec -- touch TYPO
Error: --tag 'backnd' is no project's tag (from …/live/sb/ws/.meta.yaml): the tags are backend, frontend. --recursive reads the tags of nested meta repos too.
live$ ls TYPO
ls: cannot access 'TYPO': No such file or directory
live$ meta exec --dry-run -- touch x
error: unexpected argument '--dry-run' found

tip: --dry-run is an option of meta itself: it goes before the command, as in `meta --dry-run <COMMAND>`
live$ meta -i . -t frontend exec -- pwd
✓ . (ws):
…/live/sb/ws
✓ ./web:
…/live/sb/ws/web
2 commands complete

Overlaps with wave 2

Review

Six reviewers per round (two each of Claude Opus, Codex Sol, Codex Astra; perspectives rotated): correctness, simplicity, security, platform, tests, user-facing. Every blocking finding was fixed with a test, or was stale docs fixed by hand:

  • Round 1: meta help <built-in> panicked; a filtered -r project check missed a selected nested project; --add-aliases-to-global-looprc --help ran the import; plugin words that escape alike crashed meta --help.
  • Round 2: meta help git clean -f -- . ran the command; --tag "" selected every repo; --tag refusals untested; skills still said --tag keeps the root.
  • Round 3: one more skill line about the root; CodeRabbit's four points (the --primary error with disagreeing set records, a help test, two docs).
  • Round 4: one docs example with --dry-run after the plugin command. Three rounds in a row had found stale docs, so the docs, skills and help strings were swept for all three kinds by hand; the parsing test that makes it impossible is the F12 follow-up below.
  • Round 5: meta --help exec failed clap's required-argument check.
  • Round 6 (head 50940d6, the last full round): four yes. Two no, the same regression: started as meta.exe (Windows) or through a link, clap named the command after argv[0], meta's help no longer matched and dropped the plugin list. Fixed in e6dfe9e (the command is always named meta, as main showed it; the long help counts too), with a bats test that starts meta as meta.exe and m (the 50940d6 binary lists 0 plugins there). As decided by the orchestrator, the two seats that found it re-checked e6dfe9e; with round 6's four yes that covers the head.

Follow-ups (not in this PR)

  • A test that pulls every meta … command out of README, docs/ and the skills and parses it with the real CLI (plan K8 option 1, F12 in wave 5), so an example with meta's options after the command can't come back. Review rounds 2-4 each found stale docs of this change; they were swept by hand here.

  • Plugin commands meta adapts (git update, git commit, worktree …) could add the same "meta's options go before the command" tip to clap's unknown-argument error (F5, wave 4).

  • meta -r project dependents agent on harmony picks one of the two nested agent projects as the target; a query by name can't say which (results are distinct by path).

  • meta context ignores --config (unchanged here), and plugins never get --config (2947: not on the wire), so meta --config alt.yaml -t x project check checks the default config's projects against alt's selection.

  • meta --primary git worktree create inside a set still creates from the set's checkout (the plugin process starts in the set; on main too).

  • meta context refuses --recursive/--depth (it never recursed); showing nested workspaces is a feature for later.

  • Worktree-set detection looks for a literal .worktrees folder in the path, so a set made under a custom META_WORKTREES folder isn't seen as a set and --primary from inside it acts on the set (on main too).

  • meta -t x plugin list, init, help ignore filters silently (as on main); they could refuse them like context -r. meta --primary init claude inside a set writes into the set's checkout (as on main): init should honour --primary or refuse it.

  • The pass-through git help (meta -t backend git status --help) lists every repo as its scope, whatever the filters (as on main).

  • Inside a set, an --include that names a repo the set doesn't hold ends with the --recursive hint; --primary is the one that helps there.

  • meta -t rust context, where only a nested project has rust, ends with the --recursive hint, which context refuses; for context the hint should go.

  • meta help project nosuch prints the project plugin's help, exit 0 (the plugin's own handling of an unknown word).

  • meta -r project dependents ignores --depth, and a nested project's depends_on: [api] meant for a sibling api counts for the root's api (names are global in the graph).

  • Inside a set, -t X project check checks the set's checkouts only, so a tagged project the set doesn't hold isn't reported missing (plain project check there reads the config and does).

  • Filtered project check is covered by bats only, which CI doesn't run on Windows; a Rust test with one cloned and one uncloned project would cover all three systems.

  • On Windows a value starting with .\ isn't "path only" the way ./ is (as on main).

  • meta-mcp's meta_build always adds the root to a tag selection (its own rule, meta_mcp/src/tools.rs); decision 6 is about meta's --tag, so it is left as is.

  • No Windows test starts meta end to end with a plugin (the plugin fixtures are shell scripts); one would have caught the meta.exe help regression found in round 6.

  • project check could be one tree walk for both the filtered and unfiltered case (it touches the code fix!: act only on project folders that are repositories of their own; stop refusing where projects live [[tasks/harmony-2968]] #146 rewrites).

  • meta git update's line in the git plugin's overview still says "Pull existing repos" (F5 decides pulling).

… command [[tasks/harmony-2971]]

One function chooses the repos a command runs in (repo_filter::Scope):
--include and --tag each add repos, --exclude removes them, the root has
no tags (-i . adds it), a tag no project has is an error naming the tags
there are, nested projects match on their own tags, and every error names
the .meta.yaml it read. exec, plugins, context and worktree exec use it;
project check applies it, project list and dependents refuse it by name,
git update, clone and worktree refuse --tag as they refuse --include.

meta's options go only before the command: extract_global_flags and
global = true are gone, a misplaced option gets a tip, and the commands
that print data keep their own --json (worktree's is new; atc reads
`meta git worktree list --recursive --metadata-only --json`).

clap renders all help: the hand-written printers are deleted, plugins'
words are added to clap's root help, `meta help <cmd>...` works, and a
plugin's help comes from its info (escaped), never from a second process.

The selection stays a path end to end; one dispatch tail builds one
PluginRequestOptions and one LoopConfig; --primary inside a set acts on
the workspace the set was made from. `meta git status ARGS` passes ARGS
to git; `meta git update` refuses arguments. PluginRequestOptions gains
tag_filters (additive). -r project dependents covers nested projects.

Clap-based parsing and help replace custom help paths. The CLI resolves options before the command and reports placement guidance for matching top-level options.
Plugin requests and project commands
meta_plugin_protocol/src/lib.rs, meta_cli/src/subprocess_plugins.rs, meta_project_cli/src/*, docs/plugin_development.md, meta_cli/tests/plugin_*
Plugin requests include project paths, cwd, and tag filters. Project checks use selected paths, and recursive dependent lookup includes nested projects.

Update the Plugin Protocol request example to the current wire shape.

This example still shows the old request shape:

  • projects is a list of objects.
  • Filters sit in a top-level "filters": {"tags": [...]} object.

The protocol no longer has either form:

  • PluginRequest.projects is a list of path strings.
  • The request has a cwd field.
  • Filters are in options.include_filters, options.exclude_filters and options.tag_filters, as meta_plugin_protocol/src/lib.rs defines them.

This PR updated docs/plugin_development.md to the new shape. A plugin author who copies this example reads fields that do not exist, and the plugin cannot refuse --tag correctly.

Correct the meta git update description in the Git Plugin table.

This row says meta git update will "Pull changes and clone missing repos". This PR states the opposite in other places:

  • Line 270 of this README says meta git update clones what is missing.
  • .meta/skills/meta-git/SKILL.md line 49 says it "does not pull existing ones".

A reader of the README table expects a pull that never happens.

… README match [[tasks/harmony-2971]]

--primary in a set whose checkouts record different workspaces says so
and points at the workspace directory, not back at --primary. The
meta-workspace skill (installed by meta init) stops saying --tag keeps
the root; the README's CLI reference is meta --help's; the protocol
example in advanced_usage.md is the current request. Smaller: blank-tag
check after --help, set_tree private, one with_option_tip guard.
…[[tasks/harmony-2971]]

The root keeps clap's own help action, and meta catches clap's root help
to print it with the commands plugins add, so meta --help exec no longer
fails exec's required-argument check. That deletes disable_help_flag, the
root print_help flag and the per-subcommand HelpFlag. Tests: --help before
a command, the help options atc reads, --depth on context, a nested check
that must not report an unselected project, update refusals against a
cloneable remote.
… started by [[tasks/harmony-2971]]

Started as meta.exe (Windows) or through a link, clap took the command's
name from argv[0], meta's own help no longer matched the text it is told
apart by, and the plugin list was dropped. The command is always named
meta now, as main showed it, and the long help counts too. Ambiguity
errors name the .meta.yaml they read, like the other filter errors.

…g [[tasks/harmony-2972]] (#147)

fix!: a meta run owns its children and the worktree sets it was making

When meta is told to stop (SIGINT, SIGTERM, SIGHUP), nothing new starts,
the signal is passed on to every program meta started (whole process
groups when meta isn't a terminal's foreground job), meta waits for them
and then ends as that signal ends a program. Plugins, loop and meta-git
own their children the same way. A plugin no longer panics when meta has
stopped reading its output.

worktree create holds a lease (a locked file in the git dir of the set's
first repo) from before it claims the set's directory until it is done:
remove refuses a set being created ("being created by pid N"), and a set
whose creator stopped part way can be removed, unrecorded worktrees
included. exec --ephemeral holds the lease for its run; prune removes an
ephemeral set once its run is gone, and create --ephemeral makes a set
the next prune removes. prune has git drop its entry for a worktree whose
folder was deleted, so the set can be made again.

[[tasks/harmony-2972]]

fix: prune keeps entries with an operation under way; a lease is only…

… this workspace's, and only this process's by its handle

Review round 1 (R3, R5): prune left git's state of a rebase under way
(its autostash) unreachable; remove took another workspace's abandoned
lease as authority; a lease naming this process's pid counted as its own
(pids repeat across machines and namespaces). Signal and ephemeral tests
hold their commands on a release file instead of a timer, check the
waiters' pids, and bound every wait.

[[tasks/harmony-2972]]

fix: the lease locks a file of its own, so it can be read while held …

…(Windows)

Review round 1 (R1, R4): Windows enforces file locks, so a held lease
could not be read: exec --ephemeral could not remove its own set and
prune did not see a running one. The lease now locks <name>.lock and
writes <name>.json whole once the lock is held (no window where another
creator can take it). remove says when a set is in use by an ephemeral
run rather than being created. prune leaves the sets of a worktrees
folder that is itself gone (a drive not mounted). A child dropped without
being waited for no longer holds up a stop.

[[tasks/harmony-2972]]

fix: a stop always ends; a program meta started kills its children fi…

…rst; review follow-ups

Review round 1 (R2, CodeRabbit): a command under the plugin that ignored
TERM made meta wait on a pipe it still held: meta's force-kill hit the
plugin before the plugin's own. A program meta started now gives its
children half meta's grace, the owner ends after its bounded wait
whatever is left, and children are reaped as they stop so their groups
empty at once. children::output gives stdin from nothing; Owned no
longer hands out Child::wait/kill; SIGHUP is left alone where meta can't
tell nohup ignored it (not Linux); the lease checks that its lock is
still the file at its path. prune names a deleted worktree of a set that
is still there as such.

[[tasks/harmony-2972]]

fix: prune drops git's entry of a deleted worktree only when nothing …

…else holds work there

Review round 2 (R1, R2): a staged change lived only in the deleted
worktree's git entry, and prune dropped it, the second such case after
round 1's rebase autostash. Instead of naming what to keep, prune now
drops an entry only when nothing but the deleted folder could have held
work: not locked, no operation under way, no refs of its own, HEAD on an
existing branch or a commit a ref holds, and nothing staged that HEAD
lacks. The same check decides the preview, so --dry-run says what prune
does. create retires a dead lease for its set path left in another
repository, so it can't make prune remove the new set.

[[tasks/harmony-2972]]

fix: prune leaves git's entries alone; create and add take back a del…

…eted worktree's entry at their own path

Review round 2 (R1, R2, R3): dropping git's entry for every worktree
whose folder is gone kept finding new losses: a rebase's autostash, a
staged index, a worktree that was moved and could no longer be
repaired. prune is back to main's behaviour for git's entries (it
forgets meta's records only). Instead, git worktree add, for create and
add, drops a leftover entry at exactly the path it is about to use, and
only when that entry holds nothing its deleted folder didn't (not
locked, no operation under way, no refs of its own, HEAD held by a ref,
nothing staged that HEAD lacks); otherwise it says what it holds. A set
or worktree deleted by hand can be made again, prune or not.

stop() drops emptied groups before signalling; taking a lease retries a
lock a reader holds for a moment.

[[tasks/harmony-2972]]

fix: prune and remove claim an abandoned set's lease and hold it thro…

…ugh the deletion

Review round 3 (R1): prune read leases once; a set made again at the
same path while prune ran (its create retires the old lease) was then
removed on the old lease's authority. Before deleting an abandoned set,
prune and remove take its lease's lock, check it still says what it
said, and hold it until the set and lease are gone.

[[tasks/harmony-2972]]

fix: in a terminal too, a signal another process sends ends meta with…

…in the grace

Review round 3 (R4, R5): in a terminal's foreground, kill -TERM to meta
never ended it while a command ignored TERM (no deadline there). The
grace and kill now apply whenever another process sent the signal, and
reach children that share meta's group. A bats test runs this in a pty.
macOS: waitid's answer for a child that is only stopped is waited out.
Windows: the lease's lock is compared with the file at the path by
volume and file index. The remove-during-create test's hook waits on a
release file instead of a timer; the moved-worktree test moves a clean
worktree.

[[tasks/harmony-2972]]

fix!: meta never drops git's own worktree entries; create and add say…

… how instead

Owner decision after three review rounds each found a new way dropping a
deleted worktree's git entry loses work (a rebase's autostash, the
staged index, a moved worktree, commits only its reflog holds). prune
forgets only meta's record, as on main. git worktree add, for create and
add, stops at a path where git still has an entry for a worktree whose
folder is gone, naming the repository, the path, what git may still
hold there, and the one command to drop the entry once checked.

[[tasks/harmony-2972]]

fix: one lease per set, in one place per workspace; deleting a set ho…

…lds its lease

Review round 4 (R3): leases kept in the first repository each create
picked needed cross-repository lookups, and two races came through
them: prune deleted an ephemeral set whose run started after prune read
the leases, and a late create retired another create's lease, leaving
its half-made set unremovable. Every set's lease now lives in the
workspace root's git directory (or its first repository's, by path).
create takes it; remove and prune hold it while they delete the set, so
no create or ephemeral run of it can start meanwhile, and a lease left
behind is never retired by another create. A lease carries a token, so
two creators with one pid (separate pid namespaces) can't be taken for
each other. Both races are tests (meta_git_cli/tests/races.rs), failing
on bd48e1b.

Also (R1, R4): groups that emptied are forgotten as soon as a child is
reaped; prune's comment on git's entries; the TERM test helper fails
instead of hanging if meta doesn't end.

[[tasks/harmony-2972]]

test: TERM to meta ends a command that is stopped (SIGSTOP)

Review round 4 (R5): the macOS stopped-child fix had no test. A command
that stops itself still counts as running: TERM to meta kills it within
the grace and meta ends by TERM, with nothing written afterwards.

[[tasks/harmony-2972]]

fix: remove and prune see a set's lease wherever its creator kept it

Review round 5 (R3): where the workspace root isn't a repository, the
lease home is its first repository by path, which moves when one that
sorts first is added; prune then missed a running ephemeral set's lease
and deleted the set. remove and prune now also look in every workspace
repository's lease directory: a lease held there refuses, one left
there counts and goes with the set. On Windows a lock file its holder is
deleting reads as in use, not as an error.

[[tasks/harmony-2972]]

test: meta's own options go before the command (after #148)

[[tasks/harmony-2972]]

fix!: a set's lease lives beside the set, so every command finds the …

…same one

Owner decision after review rounds 4-6 each found a race from the lease
living in a repository's git directory: where the workspace root isn't
a repository, its place moved when one that sorts first was added, so
creators and deleters could disagree (prune deleted a running ephemeral
set, or a set made again under an old lease). The lease is now
<worktrees dir>/.<set>.meta-lease (and .lock), a place that depends only
on the set's path. The cross-repository scan and lease::home are gone.
Records stay in git's directories; forging a lease takes write access to
the worktrees folder, which already lets anyone delete the set.

Round 6's two scenarios are tests in meta_git_cli/tests/races.rs (both
fail on ea72a1b).

[[tasks/harmony-2972]]

fix: prune removes an ephemeral set only beside the lease its run left

Review round 7 (R3): git clean -fdx in the workspace deletes the loose
files in the ignored worktrees folder, a running ephemeral set's lease
among them, and prune took the missing lease for a run that ended and
deleted the running set. An ephemeral set is now pruned only when the
lease its run left (stopped, or unable to remove the set) is beside it;
with no lease it is left alone, as on main. create --ephemeral leaves
its lease when it finishes, so the next prune still removes that set.

[[tasks/harmony-2972]]

fix: the leftover-entry command is escaped for the terminal; document…

… SIGKILL to meta's group

CodeRabbit on 63cabaf: shell quoting keeps control characters, so a path
holding ESC reached the terminal through the printed git command; it is
now escaped after quoting (unit test). children.rs says that a SIGKILL
to meta's process group ends meta but not the children in groups of
their own.

[[tasks/harmony-2972]]

test: the escaped leftover-entry test runs on Unix only (Windows file…

… names hold no control characters)

[[tasks/harmony-2972]]

fix: a lock that can't be tested is an error, and a hangup ends meta'…

…s commands

- lease: only a lock another process holds reads as held; any other
failure to take it (a filesystem without locks) is an error, and prune
and remove count such a lease as held rather than free.
- children: on a hangup only meta, the session leader, hears it, so meta
passes it on to the children in its group and bounds the wait as for a
signal another process sent; before, a command that ignored the hangup
kept meta waiting after its terminal was gone.

[[tasks/harmony-2972]]

test: the hangup test runs on Linux only, where meta handles a hangup

On macOS meta leaves SIGHUP alone, as children.rs says. The helper also
resets SIGHUP before starting meta, so bats under nohup still tests it.

[[tasks/harmony-2972]]

fix: prune tests a lease's lock through a writable handle, as NFS needs

On NFS an exclusive lock needs a file open for writing, so a lease
whose creator was killed read as held and prune kept its set forever.
