Companion to gitkb/meta_cli#36, which makes meta init claude install each skill as .claude/skills/<name>/SKILL.md (the layout Claude Code loads) and fixes the skill text. CI here builds meta_cli from the same branch name (harmony-2708), so this PR is tested against #36.

One source for the skill text

There were three drifting copies: meta_cli's .claude/skills/ (embedded in the binary), this repo's .claude/skills/, and this repo's claude-plugin/skills/. The source is now meta_cli's .claude/skills/<name>/SKILL.md:

  • it is what meta init claude ships (it must live in meta_cli for include_str!), and meta_cli builds standalone without this repo;
  • claude-plugin/ can't be dropped: the gitkb/claude-plugins marketplace serves it as the meta plugin (git-subdir of gitkb/meta, path claude-plugin), so plugin users read that copy.

This repo's two copies become exact copies:

  • make skills copies meta_cli's skills into .claude/skills/ and claude-plugin/skills/.
  • A new tests/init.bats test fails if either copy differs from meta_cli or has a skill meta_cli no longer has (with "run 'make skills'"); make skills deletes old copies first.

Other changes

  • tests/init.bats: new paths (meta-*/SKILL.md with frontmatter), plus tests that --update replaces the old flat files (and keeps unrelated ones), that plain init keeps them, and that meta init claude --help installs nothing.
  • .gitignore: meta-plugins/ → /meta-plugins/. Unanchored, it also ignored .claude/skills/meta-plugins/.
  • docs/claude_code_skills.md: new layout, --update, custom-skill format, how to keep copies in sync; CLAUDE.md: meta git worktree.

Verification

  • bats tests/init.bats locally against a build of meta_cli#36: 30/30 pass. With one byte appended to claude-plugin/skills/meta-git/SKILL.md, the copy test fails with the make skills hint.
  • init.bats now puts a stub claude first on PATH: meta init claude registers the gitkb/claude-plugins marketplace through it, which otherwise changes the global Claude settings of whoever runs the tests. The --help test also checks the stub was never called.

Keeping the copies in sync

CI checks the copies against meta_cli main (or the same-named branch). After a later meta_cli skill change merges, the copy test fails here until someone runs make skills, including on the automatic child-update sync PR (on-child-update.yml). That is the point of the test; if it gets in the way, the sync workflow could run make skills itself (not done here).

claude-plugin/.claude-plugin/plugin.json goes 0.1.0 → 0.2.0 so plugin users get the new skills. The gitkb/claude-plugins marketplace entry also says 0.1.0; whoever releases should check which version Claude Code uses there and bump it too if needed.

Merge order

Merge meta_cli#36 first, then this right after: main's init.bats checks the old flat paths and fails against a meta_cli that has #36.

Task: tasks/harmony-2708

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Updated guidance for multi-repository commands, including parallel execution, recursive discovery, filtering, and dependency ordering.
    • Added and revised Claude Code skills for workspace safety and Git worktrees, with updated installation and configuration instructions.
    • Clarified Git update, pull, snapshot restore, and plugin behavior.
  • Chores
    • Added a command to synchronize skill guides across project locations.
    • Updated the Claude Code plugin version.

meta_cli now installs each skill as .claude/skills/<name>/SKILL.md and
is the single source of the skill text. This repo's .claude/skills/ and
claude-plugin/skills/ (served by the gitkb plugin marketplace) become
exact copies: `make skills` refreshes them and tests/init.bats fails
when they drift. init.bats follows the new paths and covers --update
replacing flat files and --help installing nothing.

Anchor the meta-plugins/ ignore to the root so it no longer hides
.claude/skills/meta-plugins/.

Walkthrough

The pull request revises six Claude skill guides to describe meta command behavior and worktree operations. It replaces flat skill files with per-skill SKILL.md files, adds a Makefile target to synchronize copies, updates installation documentation, and adjusts initialization tests.

Changes

Claude skill documentation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Execution, workspace, and safety guidance
.claude/skills/meta-exec/SKILL.md, .claude/skills/meta-safety/SKILL.md, .claude/skills/meta-workspace/SKILL.md, claude-plugin/skills/meta-exec/SKILL.md, claude-plugin/skills/meta-safety/SKILL.md, claude-plugin/skills/meta-workspace/SKILL.md
The guides describe recursive discovery, path-substring filters, root-repository inclusion, and parallel or sequential execution. They replace --ordered guidance with dependency ordering through meta_execution_order. Safety guidance also clarifies strict-mode scope and non-transactional worktree behavior.
Git operations and plugin guidance
.claude/skills/meta-git/SKILL.md, .claude/skills/meta-plugins/SKILL.md, claude-plugin/skills/meta-git/SKILL.md, claude-plugin/skills/meta-plugins/SKILL.md
The guides clarify repository scope, distinguish meta git pull from meta git update, and describe restore and filter behavior. Plugin guidance updates command examples and discovery paths, and removes setup-ssh documentation.
Worktree skill guide
.claude/skills/meta-worktree.md, .claude/skills/meta-worktree/SKILL.md, claude-plugin/skills/meta-worktree/SKILL.md
A flat worktree guide is removed and replaced by directory-based skill files. The guides cover worktree set creation, execution, context, cleanup, hooks, storage, strict mode, and command options.
Skill file distribution and validation
Makefile, docs/claude_code_skills.md, tests/init.bats, .gitignore, CLAUDE.md, claude-plugin/.claude-plugin/plugin.json
The skills target copies source skill files to both repository destinations. Installation documentation and tests cover six directory-based skills and update behavior. The ignore pattern and documented worktree command are also updated, and the plugin version changes to 0.2.0.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to fd3e4

This PR mostly refreshes skill documentation and adds a sync target and tests. The one real caveat is that make skills deletes the existing skill copies before checking that the source skills exist, so a failed sync can leave the working tree incomplete until git checkout restores it. Merge meta_cli#36 first, as the PR notes, and consider validating the sources before deleting.

Plain init keeps old flat skill files. The stub keeps the tests from
registering a marketplace in the runner's global Claude settings.

8-8: 🔒 Security & Privacy

The comment's security concern is not substantiated by the supplied evidence. The line at .claude/skills/meta-exec/SKILL.md:8 describes what meta exec does. Nothing in the supplied evidence shows that this text grants execution authority, bypasses the agent's permission controls, or changes the commands an agent may run. The comment's own premise is conditional ("Verify whether the Claude skill loader treats this text as execution authority"), and the supplied evidence does not establish that premise. The proposed allowlist or approval gate is a policy design choice, not a defect in this diff.

The remedy also targets the wrong place. The file-change summary and the PR objectives say this text is copied from meta_cli#36 by make skills. Editing the copy in this repository would be overwritten on the next sync, so any policy change belongs in the source repository.

I did not inspect the rm -rf and git push examples the comment cites, and I did not check the Claude Code permission contract. Those gaps do not support the claim, because the comment's causal chain depends on the unverified loader premise.

43-47: 🎯 Functional Correctness

The claim that meta git update pulls existing repositories is not supported by the inspected evidence. Nothing in this checkout contradicts the documented contract in .claude/skills/meta-git/SKILL.md:43-47, which says update only clones missing repositories.

The only evidence for update behavior in this repository is tests/git.bats:361-375. Those tests check output substrings only. The all-present case accepts any of already, All, or up (line 366). The missing-repository case accepts any of several words (line 374). Neither case inspects whether existing repositories are pulled. The tests are weak, but a weak assertion is not a defect in the documented behavior.

The implementation that decides this behavior is not in the checkout. The initial search found no source matches for meta git (update|pull). The follow-up search listed no *.rs files, and its update and pull dispatch searches returned no matches. The tests run against $META_BIN, and the PR states that the skills are copied from the companion repository meta_cli. The binary's source is therefore outside this repository. The concern depends on that external behavior, and nothing in the repository establishes it either way.

The proposed remedy is to verify the contract or add a regression test. That is a check on intent, not a demonstrated defect. No material subject-to-path-to-consequence chain survives from the inspected evidence.

31-34: 🎯 Functional Correctness

Check the CLI repository before changing both skill copies.

The command implementation belongs to the separate meta_cli project, which is not available in this checkout. This repository cannot establish whether meta git setup-ssh and meta project sync were removed or whether meta project dependents is the valid replacement.

Add dirty-worktree coverage for exec --ephemeral.

The existing tests run commands that do not modify tracked files. They do not detect whether cleanup removes a dirty worktree or preserves the command's exact exit status. Add success and failure cases that modify a tracked file, then assert worktree removal, store cleanup, and exit-status preservation.

Cover failure handling for every lifecycle hook.

The current suite checks a failing post-create hook only. It does not check whether failing post-destroy or post-prune hooks leave their operations successful. Add focused failure cases for both hooks, or limit the guide's statement to the hook types covered by tests.

Remediation: Remove any persistence mechanisms (cron jobs, startup scripts, state files). Skills should not maintain state across sessions without explicit user consent.

Add focused failure-handling tests for the post-destroy and post-prune lifecycle
hooks, verifying each operation still succeeds when its hook fails; otherwise,
narrow the guide’s claim about hook failures to the hook types covered by the
suite.

80-80: 🎯 Functional Correctness

Check the strict-mode documentation against meta_cli#36.

meta_cli is a separate repository and is absent from this checkout. The local tests express expectations, but no meta_cli#36 implementation or test result is available. Therefore, the claims about global --strict, store-update failures, and ephemeral cleanup cannot be established from this diff. Compare the exact build and regenerate the copies with make skills if corrections are needed.

47-47: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration

Verify the pull/update contract against meta_cli#36.

The guide states that meta git update clones only missing repositories and that meta git pull updates existing repositories. Confirm this behavior, including recursive behavior, against the meta_cli#36 implementation before relying on this documentation.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Add blank lines around the code fences.

markdownlint-cli2 reports MD022 and MD031 because the headings at lines 162 and 168 directly precede their opening fences. Insert a blank line between each heading and its fence. Regenerate the plugin copy with make skills.

**On restore**: If a repo has uncommitted changes, meta automatically stashes them before checking out the snapshot state.
**On restore**: Each repo's branch is reset to the snapshot's SHA (`git checkout -B <branch> <sha>`), so commits made after the snapshot drop off the branch (they stay in the reflog). If a repo has uncommitted changes to tracked files, meta stashes them first. Untracked files are not stashed and can block the checkout.

Cover uncommitted restore cases.

This PR narrows the guide to tracked and untracked restore behavior, but tests/git.bats:252-268 only restores a committed post-snapshot change. Add focused cases against the meta_cli#36 build for a modified tracked file and a conflicting untracked file, and assert the documented stash and checkout outcomes.

Review comment at @.claude/skills/meta-git/SKILL.md at line 72:
Add focused restore tests for the meta_cli#36 build covering a modified tracked
file and an untracked file that conflicts with checkout. Assert that restore
stashes tracked changes and that the conflicting untracked file blocks checkout,
matching the documented outcomes; keep the existing committed-change case
unchanged.
