  • meta init claude merges only into the documented settings.json shape (SessionStart/PreToolUse/PreCompact arrays) and otherwise stops before writing anything, naming the file and key; --force merges too; hook groups compared by matcher and hooks (not timeout); settings.json written atomically, keeping its mode (a new one follows the umask); reports only what it did, including kept skill entries. No marketplace call: it prints the two claude plugin commands instead.
  • A plugin may answer without reading its request: a broken pipe on the request no longer fails the command; the plugin's output and status decide.
  • Plugin discovery: .meta/plugins of each of the workspace's meta dirs (workspace_meta_dirs; inside a set, the checkout's own first), then META_DATA_DIR, then PATH. Unreadable plugin dirs and plugins that don't answer --meta-plugin-info within 5 s are skipped with a warning (probe in its own process group, killed on timeout). An unusable config skips project plugins with a warning, so --help still prints.
  • plugin --local: fails with "Not in a meta workspace" outside one (JSON too); list --local shows the real path and the binary's version; install --local writes .meta/plugins/.gitignore (*).
  • meta_cli::args::{parse, escaped_error}: argument errors rendered from the escaped arguments (meta's host and the worktree plugin).
  • Error text: every config-name list names all four; plugin names in install/uninstall/update errors (and registry URLs, shorthands, versions and the missing-release error) are escaped; the orphan hint names the parent's actual file; unknown-command and --include/--exclude names escaped.
  • Inside a worktree set, --tag matches a checkout's path against project paths and --include/--exclude take project names or paths; under a hidden directory a checkout is a set member only if meta's record names the set, so a project at .deps/x is found and another tool's worktrees (.claude/worktrees/x) are not; inside a set the tag tree comes from the chosen config and its errors stop the command.
  • Inside a set, the config that names its members comes from one helper, worktree::set_config: the set's own, else the config of the workspace meta recorded it was made from; only a set without records looks above itself. Nested configs are read only when --tag/--include/--exclude is given; --tag with no config is an error. Tags and --include/--exclude names and paths compare directories, so a project behind a link keeps its tags, name and configured path. Inside a set, finding no members is an error, never a fallback to the workspace's own checkouts (only a checkout with meta's record, readable or not, or whose git dir can't be found, or a part meta can't read, marks a moved set; checkouts of sets kept inside the directory don't: a plain clone, a --separate-git-dir clone or another tool's worktree under a .worktrees directory runs as before); under --tag only the set's root runs without a project; nested configs the set doesn't hold are read from the workspace it was made from (worktree::set_tree, shared with worktree exec; only members whose record names the set say where it was made from).
  • meta --help, a plugin's generated fallback help and --verbose dispatch escape every plugin-supplied value; so do --query errors and the set-checkout gitdir error.
  • Help lists claimed commands only (no rust); EPIPE on command output, plugin output, plugin help and any built-in print exits quietly with 141 (a panic hook for std's closed-stdout panic, Linux and Windows codes, unit-tested). The plugin probe reads at most 1 MiB.
  • Skills: config names, plugin locations, --local, worktree scope, no store.

Part of the meta stability set: gitkb/meta#128 has the full description and how it was verified. Merge together with it (same branch name, so CI builds them together).

Implements [[tasks/harmony-2793]]

Teach .meta.yaml/.meta.json, with .meta as the legacy file; one config
per directory. Plugin discovery reads the workspace root's
.meta/plugins only; --local documented. Worktree remove/prune act on
the current workspace's sets only. Drop the store line from
meta-safety.

[[tasks/harmony-2793]]
Validate and merge settings before installing content, write settings atomically, and report kept skills and actual hooks. Replace marketplace registration with a hint. Escape command and filter names, handle stdout EPIPE, show claimed plugin commands, and refuse project-list filters.

[[tasks/harmony-2793]]
Use the nearest config for local plugins, skip unreadable plugin directories,
and kill timed-out probe process groups. Report local binary versions and paths,
ignore untracked local plugin files, and escape config errors.
[[tasks/harmony-2793]]
Plugin discovery reads .meta/plugins next to the nearest meta config
and next to each parent config that lists it (one workspace), and no
further. A legacy .meta config file means no project plugins, without
a warning. workspace_root moves to meta_core so worktree scope and
plugin scope share one definition; the nearest-config lookup is now
nearest_meta_dir.

Walkthrough

This pull request updates plugin discovery and local installation, Claude initialization, workspace configuration handling, worktree documentation, and several CLI error and command-handling paths.

Changes

Plugin discovery and installation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Workspace plugin discovery
.claude/skills/meta-plugins/SKILL.md, src/subprocess_plugins.rs, src/registry.rs, src/main.rs, tests/plugin_discovery.rs
Discovery searches configured workspace plugin directories nearest first, then retains global and PATH sources. Directory errors produce warnings, and local plugin entries take precedence.
Metadata probing and plugin listings
src/subprocess_plugins.rs, src/registry.rs, tests/plugin_discovery.rs
Metadata probes use a five-second deadline and report failures. Detailed listings use binary-reported versions and identify local installation scope.
Local plugin installation
src/registry.rs, tests/plugin_discovery.rs
Local setup creates .meta/plugins/.gitignore containing * when the file is absent. Tests cover local installation and preservation of an existing ignore file.

Claude initialization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Settings validation and merge plan
Cargo.toml, src/init.rs
Settings are validated before skills or rules are written. Hook merging preserves other settings, rejects invalid JSON or hook shapes, and writes planned changes through a temporary file.
Initialization output and installed files
src/init.rs, src/main.rs
Force refreshes skills and rules while merging hooks. Unrecognized existing flat files are skipped, skip messages are reported, and marketplace setup instructions replace automatic registration.

Workspace configuration and worktree rules

Layer / File(s) Summary
Workspace config discovery
.claude/skills/meta-workspace/SKILL.md, src/context.rs, src/main.rs, tests/plugin_discovery.rs
Documentation lists supported config files and multiple-config errors. Config discovery errors propagate, and command output uses escaped paths and the supported config-name list.
Worktree cleanup and strict-mode documentation
.claude/skills/meta-safety/SKILL.md, .claude/skills/meta-worktree/SKILL.md
Documentation updates orphan-set definitions, cleanup scope, removal of unrecorded worktrees, config-file examples, and strict-mode error descriptions.

CLI error and command handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Command validation and error output
src/main.rs, src/repo_filter.rs
Project list commands reject include and exclude filters. Broken-pipe output exits successfully, and error messages escape repository paths, filter values, and command names.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review f54a0

This change keeps unrecognized Claude settings and scopes plugin discovery to the workspace. The remaining issues are small. An updated settings file can lose its original permissions, updating all plugins can be slowed by a hung plugin, and one documentation claim about the local flag is inaccurate. These can be fixed before or shortly after merge.

meta plugin list --local
```
`--local` outside a meta workspace fails with "not in a meta workspace".
Correct the --local failure claim for plugin list.
The text says --local outside a meta workspace fails with "not in a meta workspace". This is true for install, uninstall and update, because PluginInstaller::new_local returns an error.
meta plugin list --local behaves differently. In src/main.rs (Lines 1162-1168), it prints the message to stdout and returns Ok(()). The exit code is 0. With --json, it prints nothing.
Choose one fix:
  • Document that list --local exits 0 and prints the message outside a workspace.
  • Make list --local return the same error as the other subcommands. This also gives --json consumers an error instead of empty output.
Preserve the permissions of an existing settings.json when replacing it.
NamedTempFile creates the temp file with mode 0600. persist then renames it over settings.json. A file that was 0644 (typical for a committed .claude/settings.json) becomes 0600. The previous fs::write kept the mode of an existing file. Other users, containers, or tools that read the file can lose access.
Copy the permissions of the existing file onto the temp file before the rename.
Sync the temp file before the rename and the parent directory after it.
rename gives atomic replacement, not durability. The code calls persist without sync_all on the temp file. After a crash or power loss, settings.json can be empty or truncated. The code also does not sync the containing directory after the rename. Unrelated user settings could be lost, which the PR aims to prevent.
Avoid probing every plugin when only names are needed.
list_plugins_detailed now runs probe_plugin_info on every plugin binary. Each probe is sequential and can wait up to 5 seconds. The probe also executes the plugin.
meta plugin update without a name calls this function in src/main.rs (Line 1288). That caller reads only plugin.name. A single hung plugin delays the update by 5 seconds. The command also prints warnings that the update does not need.
Add a names-only listing helper for the update path. Alternatively, make the version probe lazy or separate it from the name scan. Keep the probe only for the detailed list --local output.
Switch the accepted stream back to blocking mode to avoid a flaky read.
The listener uses set_nonblocking(true). On BSD and macOS, an accepted socket can inherit O_NONBLOCK. The file is cfg(unix), so it runs on macOS too.
If the client has not yet sent its request, stream.read(&mut request).unwrap() can return WouldBlock. The server thread then panics.
Call stream.set_nonblocking(false) right after accept and before the timeouts and read.
Proposed fix
                 Ok((mut stream, _)) => {
+                    stream.set_nonblocking(false).unwrap();
                     stream
                         .set_read_timeout(Some(Duration::from_secs(2)))
                         .unwrap();
Review comment at @tests/plugin_discovery.rs around lines 239 - 240:
In the accepted-stream branch, switch `stream` to blocking mode immediately
after `accept` and before setting timeouts or calling `read`, so the read waits
for the client request instead of failing with `WouldBlock`.
Plugin discovery uses workspace_meta_dirs, so worktree sets see the
workspace's plugins. Plugin output and help go through a fallible
writer. plugin list --local fails outside a workspace, JSON too. The
probe waits on stdout then exit, without a sleep loop. init compares
hook groups by matcher and hooks (not timeout) and keeps settings.json's
mode. The project list filter refusal moves to the project plugin.
[[tasks/harmony-2793]]
meta_cli::args renders clap errors from the escaped arguments, for the
host and the worktree plugin.
[[tasks/harmony-2793]]
An unusable config skips project plugins with a warning, so --help
still prints. A new settings.json follows the umask. The "already
linked" lines show only with --verbose. The not-in-a-workspace hint
no longer points at meta init.
[[tasks/harmony-2793]]
As a shell reports a command a closed pipe stopped, so a failure it cut
off isn't reported as success.
[[tasks/harmony-2793]]
A panic hook turns std's broken-pipe print panic into the same quiet
exit as fallible writes, for every built-in command.
[[tasks/harmony-2793]]
Plugin names in install/uninstall errors and the verbose command echo
are escaped. A user's own file at a skill name says it isn't meta's.
Discovery tests use canonical temp paths; HOME-faking tests also set
XDG_CONFIG_HOME and GIT_CONFIG_GLOBAL.
[[tasks/harmony-2793]]
The closed-stdout check also knows os errors 109 and 232, unit-tested.
A plugin can't fill memory while it is probed.
[[tasks/harmony-2793]]
A set lays its repos out as the workspace, so --tag matches a checkout's
path against project paths and --include/--exclude take project names
too. Discovery finds repos at hidden paths, skipping only .git and
nested .worktrees.
[[tasks/harmony-2793]]
An agent's own worktree (.claude/worktrees/x) in a set is not a member.
Inside a set, tags and names cover nested meta repos too.
[[tasks/harmony-2793]]
Under a hidden directory, a checkout is a set member only if meta's
record names the set. Inside a set the tag tree comes from the chosen
config and its errors stop the command; the no-match warning escapes
the tag.
[[tasks/harmony-2793]]
… plugin errors
set_config: the set's own config, else the recorded workspace's, climbing only without records. The tag tree is built only when a filter needs it. Tags and --include names compare directories. Plugin update and registry errors escape names, URLs and versions. --tag without a config is an error.
…ectories
Inside a .worktrees/<name> set, finding no members stops the command instead of falling back to the workspace's checkouts. A path value for --include/--exclude also matches the repo its directory leads to, so a project at a link is named by its configured path and the name/path ambiguity check sees both. Skill: a nested repo gets its parent project.
…as made
meta --help and plugins' generated fallback help escape every plugin-supplied value. Inside a set, --tag lets only the set's root through without a project, and nested configs the set doesn't hold are read from the workspace it was made from.
Implements [[tasks/harmony-2793]]
…ase errors
set_trees gives the set's nested configs plus the workspace's for nested meta repos the set doesn't hold. The missing-release error escapes each value. The help test's fake plugin prints with printf. Skill: ephemeral cleanup failure is reported and may leave the set.
Implements [[tasks/harmony-2793]]
set_tree returns the workspace's not-held nodes then the set's, so one map lets the set's win. --verbose dispatch, the gitdir error, --query errors and META_PLATFORM are escaped.
Implements [[tasks/harmony-2793]]
The no-checkouts error fires only when a linked worktree's checkout is under the set directory (the moved-set case); otherwise meta runs in the workspace, as before.
Implements [[tasks/harmony-2793]]
Other tools' worktrees and --separate-git-dir clones have no record, and a .git link to a git dir is a plain clone, so such workspaces under .worktrees run as before.
Implements [[tasks/harmony-2793]]
…rrors
holds_meta_checkout counts a record that exists; recursive discovery rebuilds walkdir errors as one escaped message.
Implements [[tasks/harmony-2793]]
holds_meta_checkout searches where discovery does (not .git or nested .worktrees). Skill: where hooks run.
…'s UTF-8 error
holds_meta_checkout counts a .git file naming a missing git dir (a set moved with relative paths). Invalid UTF-8 arguments get clap's own error, which doesn't echo the value.
… record beside its target
Implements [[tasks/harmony-2793]]
…llback tree
A traversal or .git error means meta can't tell, so it refuses. Checkouts of sets kept inside the directory (any worktrees_dir) are no sign of a moved set. The source-workspace fallback tree passes over each config it can't read.
Implements [[tasks/harmony-2793]]
…needs the workspace inside too
A broken pipe while sending the request no longer fails the command: the plugin's output and status decide. The moved-set guard passes over a checkout only when both its set and its workspace lie inside the directory. readable_tree visits each meta repo once. Test plugins read their request.
Implements [[tasks/harmony-2793]]
set_origin skips checkouts of other sets moved in, and refuses members that name different workspaces. readable_tree records only meta repos as visited.
Implements [[tasks/harmony-2793]]
…dvice in a set
Only a NotFound record means not meta's; other errors refuse with --primary. The not-tracked hint stays quiet inside a recorded set. The set_origin error names --primary.
