[BUG] Missing SoundWire machine driver for Lenovo Yoga (Panther Lake, RT721 + RT1320). #11225

Description

@MikoMikarro

Describe the bug
On an Intel Panther Lake (PTL) platform running Fedora 44 with kernel 7.2.7, the system fails to correctly initialize the HDMI controls when using function topologies under IPC4. The kernel log reports hda_dsp_hdmi_build_controls: no PCM in topology for HDMI converter 3. While some input event devices are created for the Headset Jack and HDMI/DP, audio endpoints are missing or non-functional.

I have tried letting the system load the default configurations, but the automatic fallback to function topologies results in deferred widget card bindings and missing PCM mappings for the HDMI converter.

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Boot into Fedora 44 (Kernel 7.2.7-200.fc44.x86_64).
  2. The SOF driver initializes using sof-audio-pci-intel-ptl.
  3. Check dmesg to find HDMI converter errors during topology loading.

Reproduction Rate
10/10 (Happens consistently on every boot).

Expected behavior
The default machine driver and function topologies should bind completely without deferring, mapping all required PCMs for the HDMI converters so that digital audio output functions as expected.

Impact
Showstopper (HDMI audio output is completely broken or unavailable due to the missing topology PCM configuration).

Environment

  1. Branch name and commit hash:
    • Kernel: 7.2.7-200.fc44.x86_64
    • SOF: Firmware version 2.14.1.1 (IPC4)
  2. Name of the topology file
    • Topology: Dynamic function topologies (sof-sdca-jack-id0.tplg, sof-sdca-1amp-id2.tplg, sof-ptl-dmic-4ch-id3.tplg, sof-hdmi-pcm5-id5.tplg) falling back from sof-ptl-dummy-4ch.tplg
  3. Name of the platform(s) on which the bug is observed.
    • Platform: Intel Panther Lake (sof-audio-pci-intel-ptl)

Update: this turned out not to be a SOF/kernel issue. The default SoundWire machine driver + function topologies work fine. The Speaker PCM (hw:0,2) is created and the RT1320 amp works.

The real problem is in alsa-ucm-conf. The card reports spk:rt721+rt1320, and sof-soundwire.conf tries to include codecs/rt721+rt1320/init.conf. That file doesn't exist, so UCM fails to load and PipeWire falls back to stereo-fallback (headphone jack only). The hda_dsp_hdmi_build_controls message is unrelated to the missing speaker output.

Tracked upstream in alsa-project/alsa-ucm-conf#851 (fixes in #852 / #855). Workaround: create /usr/share/alsa/ucm2/codecs/rt721+rt1320/init.conf containing:
    Include.rt721.File "/codecs/rt721/init.conf"
    Include.rt1320.File "/codecs/rt1320/init.conf"

Confirmed working on a Lenovo Yoga 7 2-in-1 16IPH11 (83TE), Fedora 44, kernel 7.2.7, alsa-ucm 1.2.16.1. Closing since there's nothing to fix on the SOF side.
