This LGTM from the UI side. We have e2e tests that check the user facing behavior of the policy editor with the new filters, and since this is an implementation change only the tests should continue to pass.

Boo, I'm not sure this rises to the level of a bug, but I know that we cannot cherry-pick a 32-file change into the 5.0 release branch. That is way to risky to do at this stage. Is there no other approach that would allay your concern, without such a risky change? |
Unfortunately not. |
Yeah I don't think this is the time to do this. At a certain point the risk of the fix is worse than the risk of the issue. I believe that is where we are as we have a limited amount of runway to get the release shipped. (TBH I would rather embed less logic in the protos in general because it is harder to maintain.). So could we add a validation logic to prevent this that we could ship in a subsequent patch? |
|
Also this can only be merged if the official decision is to backport it. If we are not backporting it then we cannot push it to the main branch. |
|
Validation logic does not help, and only increases burden for extensibility. We have enough of that. In my view, it is a larger risk shipping as is, and the fix is required. If this ships as is, we are unable to change this in the future. Also, while I do not recommend or encourage, we've shipped way riskier stuff closer to a release than this with much less back and forth and discussion. An apples to apples comparison will reveal way less risk on this than some of those decisions. Happy to provide any additional data to assuage concretely expressed risk concerns. |

The CRD changes LGTM, but they need to be merged into both master and release-5.0, otherwise they'd be breaking changes.
Regarding whether this should be backported or not, releasing a CRD that is sort-of broken is also not a good idea, it's going to be impossible to fix in a clean way. So now we still have the chance.
And the PR is smaller than it looks. Of the 32 files, just about 12 are production code and the changes are fairly simple. The rest are generated files and tests.

I found a requirements conflict: the feature ticket ROX-33067 explicitly permits skipping main containers, and acceptance criterion AC4 calls for “main only, init only, or both.” By that acceptance criterion, the current code is not a bug that needs to be fixed.
I recommend retaining the existing protobuf schema for 5.0 and extracting the concrete fixes from #23135. If product owners confirm that regular containers must never be skipped, enforce that with validation and a defensive filter allowlist. The evidence does not establish that replacing the enum is a necessary release-blocking correction.
The central issue is that the recorded requirements are inconsistent.
- The original design you supplied defines the shared
ContainerTypeenum and defers policy-level filtering details to the evaluation-filter proposal. I found no explicit prohibition against skipping regular containers in that document or its relevant review threads. Original design - The linked filter proposal includes
INIT_ONLYin its proposed schema and UI, while noting “There is no requirement for INIT_ONLY.” In its March discussion, Khushboo likewise says there is no expressed need for init-only policies. That establishes a scope concern; it does not clearly establish a mandatory prohibition. Proposal and discussion - The feature ticket explicitly permits the disputed behavior. Its goals allow skipping main containers, and AC4 specifies “main only, init only, or both.” The separate requirements document emphasizes init-container exclusion and future ephemeral-container support, without explicitly banning regular-container exclusion. Feature acceptance criteria, requirements
- The implementation was deliberate and reviewed. #21043 received approval and merged June 10. Its follow-up implementation, #21062, explicitly listed skipping regular containers among its tested behaviors and also received approval. This was more than an accidental possibility exposed by the proto. Schema PR, implementation PR
Prior approval does not prevent correcting a mistake, and the developer’s absence does not weaken a technical objection. Here, however, the documentation supports a requirements reconciliation before labeling the behavior an execution error.
The security concern has substance, but its description overstates the consequences. Skipping regular containers can suppress findings that an administrator expected to receive, particularly because the UI exposes only init-container exclusion. However, an init-only policy can still serve a meaningful purpose—the feature ticket explicitly contemplates it. Moreover, policy creation, modification, import, and deletion require the same policy-management permission; those users can already disable or weaken policies. I found no demonstrated authorization bypass. The established concern is amisleading or unintended policy configuration. Authorization and policy operations
The original developer’s validation alternative is technically viable. Create/update and import reach the shared policy validator, and policy-as-code calls those same APIs. Rejecting REGULAR there would prevent those paths from saving it. Restricting the evaluator to explicitly supported skip types would additionally protect internal callers. A separate enum communicates the allowed choices more clearly, but validation can enforce the same behavioral restriction. Shared validation, policy-as-code client
| Choice | Advantages | Disadvantages |
|---|---|---|
| Accept #23135 | A dedicated enum distinguishes container categories from permitted exclusions. Its explicit mapping prevents regular-container filtering. It fixes CR export, improves UI applicability rules, and strengthens detection tests. | Changes enum names and numeric meanings across API, storage, CRD, and UI boundaries. Removes documented init-only behavior. Bundles several independently useful fixes with a disputed contract change. Requires coordinated updates outside this PR. |
| Leave everything unchanged | Avoids late release churn; preserves reviewed behavior, existing examples, and the documented init-only capability. | Leaves API/UI inconsistency, a genuine CR-export defect, and a weak end-to-end test. If the intended product rule forbids regular exclusions, that rule remains unenforced. |
The review comments raise useful points on both sides:
- My release-risk objection needs a stronger basis than “32 files.” Vlad’s observation is material: many changes are generated artifacts or tests. The meaningful risks are contract changes, affected consumers, and validation coverage. His argument for settling the contract before its first release is persuasive. I verified that the filter is absent from release branches 4.9–4.11 and present in 5.0. My comment, Vlad’s review
- Khushboo’s assertion that validation does not help is unsupported by the call paths. Likewise, shipping the current schema would make subsequent changes more expensive, not impossible; validation could still constrain accepted values. Khushboo's response
- David Vail’s approval provides UI-specific confidence. It does not settle backend compatibility or the product requirement. UI review
Two concrete findings matter more than the argument over terminology.
First, CR export is demonstrably broken independently of the enum choice. I reproduced the current init filter serializing as skipcontainertypes: [1] rather than the required camel-case field and string value. The PR’s strengthened end-to-end test is also useful: the existing zero-alert check can succeed before detection occurs. Both improvements can be retained without renaming INIT. Export implementation, existing test
Second, the rename already has an external dependency: the contributions repository’s upgrade script sends skipContainerTypes: ["INIT"], and its README instructs GitOps users to use INIT. Accepting #23135 requires updating both. “Unreleased” reduces customer compatibility obligations; it does not mean there are no existing consumers. Upgrade script, instructions
The better way is to separate the decisions:
- Fix CR export and strengthen the detection test before release.
- Resolve and record whether init-only policies are supported, correcting the conflicting acceptance criteria.
- If regular exclusions are prohibited, retain the proto and add shared validation, defensive filtering, and corresponding CRD validation.
- Adopt the dedicated enum only as an explicit API-design decision, with coordinated consumer updates and release testing.
That addresses the legitimate concern while avoiding an unnecessary contract replacement.
I've shared the Accepted Requirements doc on Slack. It was not updated in the JIRA despite requests. And hence, JIRA is not the source of truth here. |

I would revise the earlier recommendation and favor the schema correction before 5.0, subject to concrete release checks.
Earlier claim was unsupported because I treated Jira’s wording and prior review approval as sufficient evidence of accepted product scope. The supplied requirements specify init-container exclusion and future ephemeral-container exclusions. They do not establish a requirement for excluding regular containers. The reported agreement to treat this document as authoritative matters. [Requirement](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1FNBEZAo-Ol9USeo7O9Q5Kj9uBEE0jHtScE554k7ZnOo/edit)
The strongest evidence supporting her position is the repository’s CRD freeze after the first release. Deferring the schema correction would therefore create a real release constraint. My earlier recommendation also underweighted the distinction between a serialization defect that can be patched and a public contract that becomes difficult to retract. [Release enforcement](
)&Practical compatibility concerns are persuasive. Kubernetes supports schema evolution through versioning and conversion, but that does not make a later RHACS migration inexpensive or operationally acceptable.
I think we need to address two points after this is merged:
-
- The upgrade script still sends
INIT. Its README presents it as a post-upgrade tool for ACS 5.0, so dismissing it as an internal dependency is insufficient. Update the script and instructions before customers use them. [Script and README](https://github.com/stackrox/contributions/tree/main/util-scripts/skip-init-container-evaluation)
- The upgrade script still sends
- We need to check staging, because existing test policies may exist there that make this a breaking change on staging.
It may be a good idea to just delete any such policies on staging if they are identifiable. |

Description
The container-type evaluation filter skipped whichever
ContainerTypevalues were listed, and allowed REGULAR containers to be skipped, incorrectly. RHACS UI has correctly not allowed such a policy to be created, but API and as code paths did. They now skip init containers ONLY whenSKIP_INITis set. Extensible for if and when we support other container types (other than regular containers) from being skipped during policy evaluation.EvaluationFilter.skip_container_typeswas a repeatedContainerType(REGULAR,INIT). It is now a repeatedSkipContainerTypewith the single valueSKIP_INIT.Policy validation accepted this field on runtime policies without a deployment event source. It now correctly accepts the field only on deploy-time policies and on runtime policies with event source
DEPLOYMENT_EVENT.The SecurityPolicy CRD allowed
REGULARandINITfor this field. It now allowsSKIP_INIT.The UI policy wizard stored
INITfor “Skip init containers” and allowed that control to be selected for any Deploy or Runtime lifecycle. It now storesSKIP_INITand allows the control to be selected for deploy-time policies and for runtime policies with a deployment event source.Saving a policy as a SecurityPolicy custom resource incorrectly wrote the skip list as
skipcontainertypeswith the numeric value0. It now writesskipContainerTypeswith the stringSKIP_INIT.Generated protobuf, swagger, deepcopy, CRD copies, and the storage protolock were updated for the new enum.
The non-Groovy end-to-end test
TestEvaluationFilterSkipsInitContainersdeployed a :latest init container and a tagged regular container, then waited for 0 alerts. That wait returns as soon as the alert count matches, so the first poll, before detection runs, already sees 0 alerts and the test passes. The zero-alert check was inconclusive, because it passed in the state before detection ran and could not separate a skipped init container from a policy that was never evaluated. The test is fixed and now uses :latest for both the init container and the regular container. It waits until the policy has 1 alert, then checks that the violation names the regular container and tag 'latest' and does not name the init container init-0 or its busybox image. The test now ensures detection is run by waiting for the alert and asserting on the results. If detection does not run, the wait times out. If the init container is still evaluated, its name is in the alert and the test will fail.
