fix(web): preview address bar keeps IME text on a composing Enter or Escape - #30449
In the preview browser's address bar, the Enter that confirms an IME candidate submits the half-composed text, and the Escape that cancels a candidate throws away everything typed. Keys that belong to an IME composition should stay in the input.
Change
The address bar's onKeyDown in PreviewChromeRow now returns early when event.nativeEvent.isComposing is set or keyCode is 229, and for Enter it calls preventDefault() first so the surrounding form does not submit. This is the same guard the thread find bar, the command palette and the settings search use. Enter and Escape behave as before once composition ends.
User-visible surfaces: the preview address bar in the right panel on web (app.t3.codes and npx t3) and desktop, which both render PreviewChromeRow. No text or layout changes. The change is that the typed text and focus stay in the bar while an IME is composing. Mobile has no preview address bar.
Open PRs touching PreviewChromeRow.tsx: #29537, #28826, #29475 and #15035. Only #15035 changes the address bar's key handling: it replaces the blur() in both submit() and the Escape branch with a toolbar focus. It adds no composition check, the two would conflict trivially, and this PR's test still holds with it merged, since a composing key no longer reaches either path.
The input sits inside <form onSubmit={submit}>. The composition guard also calls preventDefault() for Enter, so the browser cannot implicitly submit the form while composition is active. Composing Escape keeps the draft and focus. Ordinary Enter and Escape still work after composition ends.
Scope and approval
This is a very small fix for an obvious bug. It is the same defect #10262 fixed for the settings inputs and #28298 fixed for the settings search: a key handler that treats the Enter or Escape that confirms or cancels an IME candidate as a submit or a reset. ThreadFindBar and CommandPalette already guard their inputs this way. Nothing else changes.
Verification
apps/web/src/components/preview/PreviewChromeRow.composition.browser.test.tsx is new. It renders the address bar for https://example.com/ and types 東京. It then sends Enter and Escape keydowns flagged by isComposing: true and by keyCode: 229, and after each checks that the bar still holds 東京, still has focus, and submitted nothing. A real Enter must then submit 東京. On main with only the test commit (26957bd), from apps/web:
vp test run src/components/preview/PreviewChromeRow.composition.browser.test.tsx
× ignores composing keys in the address bar
Error: expect(element).toHaveValue(東京)
Expected the element to have value:
東京
Received:
https://example.com/
Tests 1 failed (1)
The first composing Enter submitted and blurred the bar, so it went back to showing the page URL. With the Enter keydowns removed, the test still fails on main at the composing Escape, which reset the draft and blurred the bar.
With the fix:
vp test run src/components/preview/PreviewChromeRow.composition.browser.test.tsx: 1 test passed.
Negative control: with only the isComposing half of the guard, the test fails at the keyCode: 229 Enter (expect(element).toHaveValue(東京)), which is the order Safari sends after compositionend.
vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck (2 packages), tests (2 files) and the React compiler check all pass.
Run on Windows 11 in Chromium through the Vitest browser runner.
In a running dev build (web, Windows, server-side browser): open a Browser panel, type 東京 in the address bar, then send the keydown an IME sends when Enter picks a candidate (isComposing: true, keyCode: 229) to the bar.
Before (main): the preview searches DuckDuckGo for the unconfirmed text
After (this branch): 東京 stays in the focused bar and nothing loads
The after shot was taken in a fresh Browser panel in the same session, so its "Recently used" card lists the search from the before run. The keydown was dispatched from the page, not typed through a real IME; I had no IME session to drive. A dispatched keydown never triggers implicit form submission, so these shots show the key handler's part and not the form's.
Bug: preview address bar submits half-typed text when Enter confirms an IME candidate

Real codex gpt-6.1-sol turns completed through the web client on main and the PR. Chrome composition plus trusted keyboard input reproduced the original issue and exposed an implicit form submit on the original head. The fixed head preserves the draft for composing Enter/Escape; ordinary Enter, Escape, back/forward, and native ibus/mozc candidate confirmation work. The extended browser test failed before the fix, then passed. vp run check:changed passed through Blacksmith. all 29 pr checks are green on the final head.
Types into the preview address bar, then sends the Enter and Escape
keydowns an IME sends while the user confirms or cancels a candidate,
flagged either by isComposing or by keyCode 229. None of them should
submit, clear the typed text or leave the bar, and the next real Enter
submits what was typed.
On main the composing Enter submits and blurs the bar, which then shows
the page URL again, so this fails.
…Escape
The address bar's key handler acted on Enter and Escape without
checking for IME composition. Typing a Japanese or Chinese search and
pressing Enter to confirm a candidate submitted the half-composed text
and left the bar. Pressing Escape to cancel a candidate threw away
everything typed and left the bar too.
The handler now returns early while composing, the guard pingdotgg#10262 gave
the settings inputs and pingdotgg#28298 gave the settings search.
Bug: preview address bar submits half-typed text when Enter confirms an IME candidate
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — The preview address bar now ignores composing keystrokes when handling Enter and Escape, preserving IME input. The change is narrowly scoped and leaves ordinary navigation behavior unchanged.

The URL input now skips Enter and Escape handling during IME composition or when keyCode is 229. A browser test checks value and focus retention during composition and verifies that ordinary Enter submits once.

found and fixed an implicit form submission in 30651d12be. returning from the composing key handler alone still let chrome submit the surrounding form. composing enter now prevents that default action. the existing browser test now checks that protection, and failed before the fix.
ran separate main (d51bc58f5e) and pr dev environments on linux, one at a time, using repo playwright and /usr/bin/google-chrome. added the real git repository through the app, selected codex gpt-6.1-sol, and completed a real provider turn in each environment. no mocks, fixtures, or replay provider.
main: chrome composition input followed by a trusted composing enter submitted 東京, blurred the bar, and loaded duckduckgo. composing escape discarded the draft.
original pr head a337ea4026: a trusted composing enter with its native default action also submitted the form. this was missed by the synthetic DOM keydown test.
fixed head: the same chrome composition input plus playwright enter/escape keeps 東京 focused with the existing page unchanged. ending composition and pressing enter loads the actual search. ordinary escape restores the current url. back and forward still navigate.
native japanese ibus/mozc: typed toukyou, converted to 東京, confirmed with enter, and verified that the draft stayed focused. a second enter searched successfully.
blacksmith: the focused browser test and vp run check:changed passed, including format, lint, knip, affected typechecks, browser test, and react compiler coverage. all 29 pr checks are now green on 30651d12be.

native safari, macos/windows ime sessions, and the electron shell were unavailable on this linux vm. linux mozc emits Process/229 for candidate confirmation, so the literal composing enter/escape regression was exercised using chrome CDP composition plus trusted playwright keyboard input. the 229-only fallback was covered by the browser test, not native safari. mobile has no preview address bar.
Exercise the native implicit-submit path for composing Enter.
dispatchEvent() does not reproduce the browser's native form-submission default action. The current composition cases therefore prove only that React calls preventDefault() and preserves the input state. Add a focused browser interaction that produces a composing Enter and asserts that the form is not submitted.

@coderabbitai On the nitpick about exercising native implicit submit: leaving the test as it is. A page-dispatched keydown can't trigger implicit form submission, and a trusted composing Enter needs CDP's Input.imeSetComposition, which the Vitest browser runner doesn't expose. The test pins the part that blocks the submit: a composing Enter is defaultPrevented. The native path was checked in real Chrome with trusted keys in the verification comment above, where the original head submitted and 30651d12be doesn't.

@spoukyii Understood. Keeping the test as it is makes sense. The defaultPrevented assertion checks the protection against implicit submission; a dispatched keydown does not exercise native implicit submission.
The reported real-Chrome verification covers that separate path, including the failure on the original head and the successful result on 30651d12be. I withdraw the nitpick. No additional test change is needed for this concern.

Do not recommend static-markup assertions, callback-wiring assertions, or tests that mirror the implementation. For React components such as apps/web/src/components/chat/AssistantCitationChip.tsx, mocked popover parts with content-only assertions do not verify opening, closing, source navigation, or highlighting.
