Plan item W9 (tests) of the 2026-10-31 meta plan, [[tasks/harmony-3000]]. One PR, tests only, apart from one explicit input in production.

What changed and why

  • One Rust sandbox, meta_test_support (used where a test starts a program or git; tests that only read and write files keep tempfile) (new crate, publish = false, path-only dev-dependency, so meta_core/loop_lib/meta_plugin_protocol still publish). A Sandbox is a temp folder with its own home, XDG config/data/runtime dirs, git config (new repos start on main), meta data dir and temp dir; sandbox.command(program) starts anything with those (and without the repo's GIT_DIR-style variables or the user's colour/log settings); sandbox.git(...) fails the test unless git succeeds; repo/bare make fixtures. It replaces the per-crate fixture helpers (meta_mcp's isolate/git/init_repo, meta_git_cli's safety/races/arguments/recursive_inventory helpers, meta_git_lib's git/init_git_repo/make_initial_commit whose callers checked only that git launched, meta_core's status/gitdir helpers, meta_cli's worktree/query/integration env blocks, loop_cli's own Sandbox). The busiest suites (meta_git_cli tests/safety.rs, races.rs) used to run with the user's git config and HOME.
  • Tests that run git through the code they test, in their own process (MCP tools, status reads, worktree code, commit) start with let sandbox = meta_test_support::isolated!();. In the test as started it re-runs that one test as a child whose environment is the sandbox's (libtest names the test thread after the test), fails unless the child ran one test and passed, and returns. So no test sets an environment variable: std::env::set_var/remove_var are gone from test code (meta_mcp's process-wide isolate() and the META_PLATFORM test that raced test_current_platform).
  • One bats sandbox: sandbox (in tests/helpers/git_environment.bash, beside the two functions init.bats still calls) isolates HOME, XDG_CONFIG_HOME, XDG_DATA_HOME, XDG_RUNTIME_DIR, GIT_CONFIG_GLOBAL, GIT_CONFIG_NOSYSTEM, META_DATA_DIR and TMPDIR under $BATS_TEST_TMPDIR, so every inline temp dir is removed with the test. make_workspace [--root-repo] [--init-only] [--plugins …] REPO… builds the shape eight files repeated. tests/setup_suite.bash builds the workspace once when META_BIN_DIR is unset (respecting CARGO_TARGET_DIR), or only checks the six binaries when it is set (CI sets it after its build). The 12 per-file "build if the binary is missing" guards are gone (init.bats is the docs tab's).
  • Tests live with the code they test: meta_cli's 11 config tests → meta_core (with the cases meta_core lacked); 39 protocol tests in four consumers → 8 wire-property tests in meta_plugin_protocol (keys checked as a plugin writes them, not text fragments; env on the wire is now tested); meta_cli/tests/plugin_git.rs deleted (its one host test moved to checkout.rs).
  • Behaviour now tested (W9.7): each loop command runs in its own directory with its own env (sequential and parallel; replaces a test that checked only Ok); max_parallel bounds how many run at once (fails with a limit of 4); a plugin plan's env reaches the command meta runs. MCP's 50-per-project cap was already tested; --no-cache no longer exists (fix!: meta context reads every repo on every call and says what git says #150); pre/post phases wait for the owner (plan C4).
  • Plugin install tests on a local release server (W9.5): META_GITHUB_URL is the one new input (registry.rs): where releases are, and GitHub's API at <url>/api/v3 (GitHub Enterprise's layout); unset, empty or https://github.com (any case), github.com and api.github.com as before. It is a plain setting: no credential handling (owner, 2026-11-01: a secret a user puts in a setting they control is theirs to print). Tests: a shorthand install loads and meta x run runs it; META_PLATFORM picks its asset; --local installs into the workspace; update --check names the newer release and leaves binary and manifest byte-identical; 404/500, no release, not an archive, unknown registry name all install nothing. The suite passes with no network (loopback only). The network tests and three commented-out tests are gone.
  • Vacuous and frozen tests (W9.3, W9.6): each one is replaced by a check of its property or deleted, line by line in the map below. Status/markdown rendering (context.rs), the project tree and help text are checked as properties (each fact present, right row/cell, no control bytes), not as frozen strings. help.bats "help equals --help" stays (it compares two outputs of one run).
  • Skips (W9.8): the reftable tests skip only for git older than 2.45 (and say so); the FIFO cases skip only without mkfifo; any other setup failure fails. Whole-file #![cfg(unix)] files say why.

Production

registry.rs +26 / −10 (net +16), within W9's +20: META_GITHUB_URL as the base of both GitHub requests, with github.com as the default. main.rs only loses the comment that headed its deleted test module.

Capability changes

Change Note
New env var META_GITHUB_URL Owner answer 2026-11-01 (option 1): one explicit input so update/--check can be tested locally. Default unchanged; no credential handling (owner, 2026-11-01).
make bats no longer runs cargo build itself tests/setup_suite.bash builds once for any bats run, make or not.
CI's cargo test runs with --no-fail-fast one run reports every failing test on each OS, not just the first test binary's
Nothing on the keep-list is removed.

Not fixed here (follow-ups)

  • meta plugin update loses the plugin when the new download fails, and never moves to a new version (a pinned install reinstalls v1 and prints "updated to v2"): [[tasks/harmony-3001]], with repros. W9.5's "update installs the new version" and "a failed replacement keeps the old one" wait for it; the fixture already serves v1, v2 and the API answer.
  • meta plugin install prints "to ~/.meta/plugins" even when META_DATA_DIR puts it elsewhere (seen while driving it; message only).
  • Hedged either/or assertions outside W9.3's list remain (e.g. exec.bats, git.bats, worktree_cloud.bats "A or B" error wordings that do assert something); W9.3 covered the vacuous ones.
  • META_GITHUB_URL counts https://github.com in any case (and empty) as github.com; https://www.github.com is taken as an Enterprise server.
  • The new input is user-visible but this PR's title is test:, so release-please won't list it; the squash message could carry a feat(plugin): META_GITHUB_URL names where releases are line.
  • With META_BIN_DIR set to a folder cargo doesn't build into, setup_suite's "build them with cargo build --workspace" won't help; unsetting META_BIN_DIR lets the suite build them.
  • max_parallel_bounds_how_many_run_at_once catches a dropped bound only where rayon's default pool has more than 2 threads (CI's runners do); a no-limit control would fail falsely on a 2-CPU machine.
  • Neither sandbox sets the locale: a test that matches git's English text (e.g. worktree.bats "already used by worktree") fails under another LANG, as on main; LC_ALL=C in both would close it.
  • Sandbox has no workspace(): the per-file workspace shapes (plugin_routing, signals, safety, meta_mcp) differ too much to share one; each is built on the sandbox.

How it was verified

  • cargo test --workspace --no-fail-fast (after cargo build --workspace --bins --examples, as CI does, for the docs and hints tests): 629 passed, 0 failed; and again with a logging git first on PATH that records every call made without the sandbox's git config (GIT_CONFIG_GLOBAL in a sandbox, GIT_CONFIG_NOSYSTEM=1): 0 such calls (review round 5 found four with this method that an unparseable GIT_CONFIG_GLOBAL didn't, since those tests pass whether git answers or not; all bats files but the docs tab's init.bats: 0 as well); cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings, cargo fmt --check, on Linux. CI ran on Linux, macOS and Windows for each pushed head.
  • Full bats suite serially on Linux with bats 1.11.1, starting with META_BIN_DIR unset (so setup_suite.bash built once): 586 ok, 0 failed (541, plus init.bats 45) (the five install.ps1 cases skip without pwsh, as on main).
  • plugin_install.bats with no network: unshare -rn sh -c 'ip link set lo up && bats tests/plugin_install.bats' (loopback only): 20/20.
  • Mutation check: max_parallel 4 instead of 2 fails the bound test.
  • Driven by hand in a sandbox (fresh HOME, empty global git config): META_GITHUB_URL=http://127.0.0.1:PORT meta plugin install gitkb/meta-hello, then meta plugin list and meta hello run:
"GET /gitkb/meta-hello/releases/latest/download/meta-hello-linux-x64.tar.gz HTTP/1.1" 404 -
…
"GET /gitkb/meta-hello/releases/latest/download/meta-hello-any.tar.gz HTTP/1.1" 200 -
Successfully installed meta-hello to ~/.meta/plugins
hello 1.2.0 …/drive/meta/plugins/meta-hello
+ meta hello run
hello from the local release

On main the variable doesn't exist, so the same install goes to github.com.

  • No drive-test scripts exist for W9 (it is a tests item).

Rebase onto #155

#155 (docs, help and hints; one skill source) merged first. The branch was folded into one commit and rebased onto b428c5b (git -c rerere.enabled=false). Hand resolutions: Cargo.lock regenerated; meta_project_cli test_project_sync_removed keeps #155's expectation ("unrecognized command 'project sync'") on the sandbox fixture; #155's new a_typo_of_a_project_command_names_the_command_and_gets_no_help moved from TempDir (no longer a dev-dependency there) to Sandbox::new(), assertions unchanged. Everything else merged automatically; CI carries both sides' steps. #155's own test sandboxes in meta_cli/tests/docs.rs and hints.rs are isolated (env_clear, own home and git config) and left as written; moving them onto meta_test_support is a follow-up. The pre-rebase head 6d39c7f (six reviewers yes) is kept as branch backup/fix-tests-6d39c7f locally.

Review

Six reviewers (2 Claude Opus 5.5, 4 Codex Sol, perspectives rotated each round): round 6 on 6d39c7f, all six MERGEABLE: yes. Rounds 1-5 findings were fixed (Windows path comparison, literal wire keys, isolation gaps found by running the suite with a broken and then a logging git config, the reftable probe, frozen markdown tests, PR-body accuracy). Stop rule hit once (rounds 1-3, a password in META_GITHUB_URL printed): owner decision, no credential handling for that variable. After the rebase onto #155, one correctness reviewer (Claude Opus 5.5) checked only the resolutions on 4ff4d48: MERGEABLE: yes (redid the merge with git merge-tree: the same two conflicts, every #155 change kept). CodeRabbit: every finding fixed or answered (one deferred to tasks/harmony-3001); it reached its review limit after c410d2b, so it hasn't reviewed the last three heads.

Not checked

  • macOS and Windows runs (CI covers both; the sandbox's root is not canonicalized on Windows, where git refuses \\?\ paths; on Windows the home is found without HOME, so META_DATA_DIR is what isolates meta's files there).

Walkthrough

The pull request adds a shared Rust test sandbox, migrates Rust and Bats tests to common setup helpers, and updates test coverage. It also makes GitHub release API and download URLs configurable through META_GITHUB_URL.

Changes

Shared test infrastructure and coverage

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared sandbox and dependency wiring
Cargo.toml, meta_test_support/*, */Cargo.toml
A new meta_test_support crate provides isolated directories, command and Git helpers, and Unix process utilities. Workspace crates add it as a development dependency.
Core and Git library test migration
meta_core/src/config.rs, meta_core/src/git/*, meta_core/src/gitdir.rs, meta_git_lib/src/*
Tests use sandbox fixtures for repository and worktree setup. Existing scenarios remain, with added configuration assertions and shared reftable capability checks.
Meta CLI test migration and assertions
meta_cli/src/*, meta_cli/tests/*
Tests use sandbox fixtures. The changes add planned-command environment and malformed-worktree checks, update Markdown table assertions, and remove several prior test blocks.
Git CLI test migration
meta_git_cli/src/*, meta_git_cli/tests/*
Tests use shared sandbox commands and repository fixtures. Existing argument, inventory, race, and worktree safety scenarios remain; some execution-plan tests are removed.
Loop, MCP, and project CLI tests
loop_cli/tests/*, loop_lib/src/tests.rs, meta_mcp/src/*, meta_mcp/tests/*, meta_project_cli/src/lib.rs
Tests adopt the shared sandbox. Loop tests check command directories, environment values, and the configured parallel limit. Project tree tests check output structure.
Plugin protocol serialization coverage
meta_plugin_protocol/src/lib.rs
New tests cover required fields, defaults, serialization omissions, and round trips for protocol requests, plans, commands, and plugin help.
Bats setup and suite assertions
.github/workflows/ci.yml, Makefile, tests/*
Shared helpers isolate Git environments, create workspaces, and resolve test binaries. Bats tests use META_BIN_DIR, add local-server plugin installation checks, tighten selected assertions, and remove some previous cases.

Configurable GitHub release URLs

Layer / File(s) Summary
GitHub API and download URL selection
meta_cli/src/registry.rs
GitHub release API and download URL construction use META_GITHUB_URL when configured. Tests cover public-host defaults and custom server URL formation.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 4ff4d

This change is test infrastructure plus a new META_GITHUB_URL setting for release downloads. Test isolation looks sound. The remaining concerns are that a malformed META_GITHUB_URL silently falls back to public GitHub, that plugin updates do not remember the host an install came from (deferred to a tracked follow-up), and that credentials placed in that URL can appear in debug logs. These are narrow and low-impact, so the change is mergeable with owner awareness.

Persist the release host with the plugin's manifest entry.

update_plugin and check_update resolve the host at update time through github(), which reads META_GITHUB_URL. The install path stores only user/repo@version, so an update that runs without META_GITHUB_URL checks api.github.com and downloads from github.com. If another account owns a public repository with the same owner and name, the update installs that account's archive. The update then runs the new binary during validation, so code from that archive can run.

Record the release host used at install time, and use that stored host for both the release check and the download during update. Store the host without credentials.

Agreed that update should use the host an install came from, but update is broken today in more basic ways (it uninstalls before downloading and never moves to a new version), and fixing update is outside this tests PR (owner's call). Added this as an acceptance item to the follow-up that fixes update: tasks/harmony-3001 (record the release host, without credentials, and check and download from it).

@gold-silver-copper Understood. I respect the decision to defer this change to tasks/harmony-3001. The acceptance item covers the host-persistence concern. This finding remains deferred, not fixed.

…and check properties [[tasks/harmony-3000]]

meta_test_support gives every test its own home, config, git config, meta
data dir and temp dir, and isolated!() re-runs a test that runs git in its
own process inside one; no test sets an environment variable. The bats suite
gets the same sandbox and builds once (setup_suite.bash). Protocol tests live
in meta_plugin_protocol, config tests in meta_core; vacuous and frozen tests
check properties; plugin install tests run against a local release server
through META_GITHUB_URL. The update bugs found on the way are
[[tasks/harmony-3001]].

Stop non-Unicode and slash-only META_GITHUB_URL values from selecting public GitHub.

github() maps a non-Unicode value to the empty string, and github_at() maps a slash-only value to the empty string. Both then select the public https://github.com and https://api.github.com defaults. A shorthand install can therefore download and run a plugin from public GitHub when the user configured another server.

Only an unset or explicitly empty value should select the default. For a non-Unicode value, or a value that becomes empty only after trailing slashes are trimmed, return an error instead. This change requires github() to return a Result and its callers to propagate it.
