fix!: hide repo URL credentials wherever meta prints a URL; remote helpers never read as ssh - #142
Plan item F8 (fixes U48 and U49 from the 2026-10-31 drive tests). Task: tasks/harmony-2961.
Reworked again on 2026-10-31, after the owner's second decision: meta does not refuse credentials in repo URLs. A token in a git URL is a normal git feature, and meta doesn't limit it. Two earlier designs are gone, and both are in this PR's force-push history and in tasks/harmony-2961:
free-text scanners over git's, ssh's and meta's output (24 review rounds, each finding a format the scanners missed);
a refusal of any configured URL with credentials (head 843970b).
What is left: a URL with user:token@ is accepted and reaches git unchanged, and wherever meta prints a URL itself, one type shows *** for the token. Nothing scans text.
What was wrong
A token in a repo URL was printed. With repo: https://alice:ghp_…@host/org/svc.git in .meta.yaml, the token showed in meta git update (and --dry-run), meta git clone, meta project list (text and --json), meta project check and meta context --json (chaos-11).
Remote-helper URLs were read as ssh.ext::sh -c … parsed as scp-style host:path with host ext, so meta ran ssh ext. That failed, so meta fell back to cloning one repo at a time, and said so only in a log::warn! (chaos-16).
What changed
One URL type for printing.meta_core::git::GitUrl wraps a URL in a private field. Whatever prints it (Display, Debug, Serialize) shows *** for its credentials (https://***@host/r) and escapes control characters. Git gets the URL only through GitUrl::as_git_arg(), exactly as written. Every field that holds a repo URL is now a GitUrl, so the compiler found every place meta prints one:
config repo and remote_url() (a clone's origin);
clone tasks and their failures, and meta git clone <url> (its --dry-run line too);
project list and check, context, the dependency graph;
ssh setup and the remote-mismatch warning;
a config error about a project value with a control character.
Credentials means:
a userinfo with a password (user:password@, the : possibly %3A), in any URL;
or any userinfo in an http(s)/ftp(s) URL, where a token may stand in for the user name (https://ghp_…@github.com/…).
A user name alone in an ssh URL (git@host:org/r.git) prints as it is, and so does a helper's own user-like part (codecommit::us-east-1://profile@repo).
The URL a remote helper reads (persistent-https::https://…) is checked the same way. ext::'s address is a command, not a URL.
The remote-mismatch warning's "Fix manually with" line can't print a hidden URL, as git remote set-url would then store ***. For a configured URL with credentials it says remote set-url origin <the repo URL in .meta.yaml>. When the two URLs differ only in their credentials (a rotated token), both print the same, so the warning adds (they differ only in their hidden credentials).
What git, ssh or a command meta runs for you prints is not meta's printing and passes through as it is. Git hides the token in its own messages (fatal: unable to access 'https://127.0.0.1:9/org/svc.git/'). meta_get_config (meta-mcp) shows .meta.yaml as written, as on main: the file is the user's, token included.
Docs. The README's project-fields table gets one line: a token in a repo URL works, and meta's own messages show it as ***, but it is stored in plain text in .meta.yaml and in the clone's .git/config; prefer a git credential helper such as gh auth setup-git.
Remote helpers first, as in git. A URL starting with <transport>:: is a remote helper and never ssh. The transport name follows git's rule: a letter or digit, then letters, digits, +, -, .. Schemes match case-sensitively, as in git (SSH:// names a helper). A scheme:// URL's host part ends at /, ? or #. An ssh user with : or % gets no ssh multiplexing.
No raw argument log. The git plugin no longer logs its raw arguments at debug level: with RUST_LOG=debug, meta git clone <token URL> showed the token there.
Visible ssh fallback (F8's invariant). When ssh multiplexing can't be set up and meta falls back to one repo at a time, it prints a ⚠ line on stderr (update, clone and parallel remote commands) instead of a log::warn! that nobody sees without RUST_LOG.

Nothing on the keep-list is removed. The two JSON inputs atc reads keep their shape. Compared with head 843970b, the credential refusal, its CREDENTIALS_REFUSED message, config::holds_credentials and the meta_get_config refusal are gone: no config is refused for a token any more, including https://user@host URLs (the Azure DevOps and Bitbucket question is moot).
atc's inputs on the real harmony workspace
I ran meta project list --recursive --json and meta git worktree list --recursive --metadata-only --json in ~/code/gitkb-dev/harmony with two builds:
the installed meta;
this head's build, called by path, with its plugins first on PATH.
Both outputs are byte-identical (15,791 and 3,791 bytes). harmony's project URLs are git@… and one plain https://…, none with credentials, so there is no difference to list.
Verification
Repro scripts. I copied chaos-repro/11-secrets.sh and 16-ext-url.sh, pointed PATH at each build, and gave each run its own sandbox:

Tests.
tests/url_credentials.bats:
a workspace whose .meta.yaml lists token URLs (https://TOKEN@…, https://alice:TOKEN@…). Git config insteadOf maps each one to a local bare repo, so meta git update clones only if git gets the URL exactly as written. The clone's origin keeps the token;
--dry-run git update, update, project list (text and --json), --recursive project list --json, project check, context --json, git status and exec succeed and print no token;
project check of a missing project prints its URL as ***;
each clone's origin is the token URL exactly (insteadOf matches a prefix, so this proves git got the URL as written);
the mismatch warning shows *** and the <the repo URL in .meta.yaml> fix, and a rotated token says they differ only in their hidden credentials;
meta git clone of a token URL, with RUST_LOG=debug: --dry-run shows ***, and the real clone fetches the meta repo and the token-URL project its own config lists, printing no token;
a token set by hand in a clone's origin prints as *** in project list (text and JSON) and in the remote-mismatch warning;
three ext:: projects clone in parallel and never run ssh;
a failed ssh setup prints a visible warning.
meta_core unit tests:
a config's token URL reaches as_git_arg() unchanged and prints ***;
a control-character error about such a URL prints it hidden;
what is no credential (ssh users, plain URLs, helper profiles, ext:: commands);
cargo nextest run --workspace 611/611, clippy (-D warnings) and cargo fmt --check clean.
The full bats suite passes, 527/527.
CI is green on every job: Rust tests on Linux, macOS and Windows; integration tests on Linux and macOS; clippy, fmt, the per-crate check and the PR title check.

Review
Rounds 1-24 reviewed the scanner design, and two rounds the refusal design (summaries in tasks/harmony-2961). Under the owner's cap, this rework gets at most 6 new rounds.
Round 1 (on 492e88b). All six said yes: R1 (Opus, correctness), R2 (Opus, user-facing), R3 (Sol, security), R4 (Sol, tests), R5 (Astra, platform), R6 (Astra, simplicity). From their nice-to-haves, 97d8450 adds the rotated-token note to the mismatch warning (R1, R2), tests project check's URL and each clone's exact origin (R4, R5), and makes the README line exact (R2). The rest is under "Not fixed here".
Round 2 (on 97d8450). All six said yes: R1 (Opus, security), R2 (Opus, tests), R3 (Sol, correctness), R4 (Sol, user-facing), R5 (Astra, simplicity), R6 (Astra, platform). Their nice-to-haves are under "Not fixed here". R4 found the PR title still said "refuse credentials"; it is fixed.
CodeRabbit reviewed 97d8450 with no actionable comments. Its earlier threads, from the scanner and refusal designs, are answered: that code is gone. gitkb-rabbit did not review this PR.
Not fixed here
Follow-up tasks/harmony-2965 (GitKB). None is a regression against main:
A token URL put where a duplicate project key, a hook name, worktrees_dir or an unknown top-level key goes is echoed by that config error, as on main. Those values are names or paths, not repo URLs.
A URL used as a project name or tag is printed as written by project list and by the config errors, as on main (they are names, not repo URLs).
A repo value with an invisible or control character before its scheme ("\u200bhttps://alice:TOKEN@h/r", a zero-width space pasted from a web page) isn't a URL to the parser, so the control-character config error shows it escaped but with the token. main printed it in full; the config doesn't load either way.
The mismatch hint says .meta.yaml without the path of the nested config it means.
Tests for the visible ssh warning in clone and parallel remote commands (only update is tested), and for the Failed to clone NAME (URL) line (it prints through GitUrl, but no test fails if that changes).
The "differ only in their hidden credentials" note compares the printed forms, so two different remotes whose escaped text is the same (a real tab against a literal \t) get the note wrongly. The mismatch itself is still reported.
The ext:: guard in GitUrl::credentials() matters only for an ext:: address that starts with scheme://, and no unit row reaches it: delete it or test it.
Not covered
What git, ssh or a command meta runs for you prints (meta exec, pass-through git commands, meta-mcp command replies) passes through as it is. git hides a URL's credentials in its own messages; a remote set up by hand is git's business (transfer.credentialsInUrl).
meta_get_config shows .meta.yaml as written, token included, as on main.
A config whose YAML has the wrong shape (projects: https://u:tok@h/r) fails to parse, and the YAML parser's message quotes the value. It does so on main too; it isn't a normal run.
Tokens in a URL's query string (?private_token=…), which git remote URLs rarely carry.
macOS and Windows weren't run locally. CI runs the Rust tests on Linux, macOS and Windows, and the bats tests on Linux and macOS.

Walkthrough
Repository URLs now use GitUrl across configuration, project data, and clone workflows. Git receives the configured URL value, while selected messages and captured Git output mask credentials. SSH handling and repository comparisons use GitUrl methods.

Summary
GitUrl parsing and comparison meta_core/src/git/url.rs, meta_core/src/config.rs
GitUrl stores configured values and parses URL forms on demand. It provides credential-aware display and serialization, access to the configured Git argument, SSH details, and repository comparison.
GitUrl in configuration and project data meta_core/src/config.rs, meta_core/src/git/mod.rs, meta_cli/src/context.rs, meta_cli/src/dependency_graph.rs, meta_git_lib/src/clone_queue.rs, meta_git_lib/src/missing.rs, meta_git_lib/src/worktree/helpers.rs, meta_cli/src/main.rs
Clone and SSH paths pass typed URLs to Git and SSH setup. Project output and clone stderr redact credentials. SSH mismatch checks compare repositories with same_repository; warnings and serial-clone fallback remain in the relevant setup paths. Tests cover credential handling, remote helpers, and SSH setup failures. The README describes credential storage and recommends a Git credential helper.
gitkb/meta#139: Introduces shared GitUrl parsing and Git command helpers that this PR extends.
gitkb/meta#140: Updates GitUrl::name and SSH repository checks that this PR further develops.
gitkb/meta#141: Adds clone and update preview handling that this PR updates to use typed URLs and credential masking.

Explanation
The title names the main behavior change: credentials in repo URLs are hidden wherever meta prints a URL. It also names the second change, that remote helpers are no longer read as SSH. The raw summary supports both. The title's "fix!" prefix marks a breaking change, and the objectives describe the policy change that goes with it. The title is specific and matches the changeset, so it passes.

Redact URL arguments before displaying the command.
For meta 'https://a b:SECRET@host/repo', GitUrl hides the first argument’s credentials, but display_command uses redact_urls, which stops at the space. The suggested command then prints SECRET to stderr. Fix loop_lib::display_command to redact this URL shape before quoting it. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

…ead as ssh
meta_core::git::GitUrl holds a repo URL as configured; Display, Debug
and Serialize hide its userinfo, and only as_git_arg() hands git the
raw URL. Every repo field is a GitUrl. Free text meta prints (shown
commands, errors, logs, worktree metadata, git's captured output,
meta-mcp echoes and meta_get_config) goes through the same rule
(redact_urls, redact_git_output, redact_config_text). A remote helper's
URL (<transport>::<address>) is never taken for ssh; ext::'s address is
a command, any other helper's is one URL. Config refuses a credential
URL outside `repo`.
Squashed onto main after meta#143 (404bc89); the branch history before
it is in PR #142's force-push timeline.
Implements [[tasks/harmony-2961]]
A remote helper may print the address it got without its <transport>::,
where no scan of the text reads a space in the password: the clone
worker and meta_core::git::run now hide the credentials of the URL they
handed git wherever a URL shows them (GitUrl::hide_in). A cut git line
also loses a URL whose authority runs to its end. meta-mcp hides a
program that can't start; the bats metadata check no longer depends on
map order.
Part of [[tasks/harmony-2961]]
Hiding the known URL first shortened a cut line below the length that
marks it cut, so it kept its last word: a second, cut copy of a URL
showed part of its token. The --from-pr fetch hides origin's URL the
same way; git::run drops the URL hiding no caller needed. README says
how meta prints a repo URL.
Part of [[tasks/harmony-2961]]
Trimming a line (or hiding a known URL in it) before the cut check could
shorten a cut line enough to pass as whole, and keep part of a token: a
line is now trimmed only after. A cut line also drops spaces before its
open URL is found. bats: a remote helper that prints its address, in a
queued clone and a --from-pr fetch.
Part of [[tasks/harmony-2961]]
… a helper
redact_git_output takes the URL git was given: per line it decides the
cut on the length as written, hides that URL's credentials, drops a cut
line's open URL (spaces don't end it), then scans. Before, the scan ran
first and could change a password with an `@` so the known URL no
longer matched, and a cut helper password with two spaces stayed.
A scheme git hands to a remote helper (any but git's own and curl's)
reads like `foo::`: a space doesn't end its URL. meta-mcp's checkout
reads git's refusal of a branch as git's output (it may be cut).
Part of [[tasks/harmony-2961]]
git hands an ssh:// URL's user to ssh as typed, a space included, as it
does any URL to a remote helper: the text scan now ends a URL at
whitespace only for http(s) and ftp(s), which curl refuses it in.
redact_urls says so, and what it costs.
Part of [[tasks/harmony-2961]]
…n helper URLs
ssh's refusal names `user:password@host`, which git decodes for it, with
no `://`: the known URL's password is hidden wherever it shows, as
written or decoded. git's stderr in meta's worktree and branch errors
goes through redact_git_output (shown_stderr), so a refusal git cut
before a URL's `@` shows no token. A helper or ssh URL is not ended by a
newline either. meta-mcp hides credentials in an argument value before
cutting it for its error.
Part of [[tasks/harmony-2961]]
No config value holds a line break, so a URL in a config ends at one: a
comment's redis:// URL no longer runs to a later line's `@` and makes a
credential-free file come back rewritten.
Part of [[tasks/harmony-2961]]
The owner decided meta refuses a password or token in a repo URL. Config
validation refuses a project value that is a URL with credentials, naming
the project and pointing at a git credential helper; `meta git clone`
refuses such a URL before git runs. meta no longer hands git a credential,
so the scanners of git's, ssh's and meta's own output (redact_urls,
redact_url, redact_git_output, shown_stderr, redact_config_text) and their
call sites are gone. GitUrl still prints a URL read from a clone's remote
with its credentials hidden, and remote helpers are never ssh.

for credentials before calling config::Workspace::load, so parse or validation
failures cannot bypass detection. Add the credential-scanning helper in
meta_core::config, checking parsed YAML keys and values with
GitUrl::has_credentials and using a conservative text scan when YAML parsing
fails. Add tests covering a credential in a later project after an earlier
invalid project and a credential alongside an unknown top-level key.

… visible ssh fallback
- The git plugin no longer logs its raw arguments at debug level: they
showed a clone URL's token before the refusal.
- meta_get_config checks every key and value of the config for a URL with
credentials before showing it, so an earlier load error can't skip the
check.
- A failed ssh multiplexing setup is a visible warning again (F8's
invariant).
- credentials() reads the shared URL parse; the refusal also names
credential.<url>.username for a user name.

The owner's second decision: a token in a git URL is a normal git
feature, so meta no longer refuses it. A URL with user:token@ loads,
and git gets it unchanged; wherever meta prints a URL itself, GitUrl's
Display/Debug/Serialize show *** for the credentials. No text scanning.
- delete the config refusal (all values, user-only https URLs too),
CREDENTIALS_REFUSED, config::holds_credentials, the clone refusal and
meta_get_config's refusal (back to main: the file as written)
- meta --dry-run git clone shows the command with the hidden URL
- the mismatch warning's fix command names "<the repo URL in
.meta.yaml>" for a URL with credentials, as *** would break it
- a control-character config error prints the value through GitUrl
- README: a token works and prints as ***, but sits in plain text in
.meta.yaml and .git/config; prefer a git credential helper
- tests: insteadOf maps each token URL to a local bare repo, so a clone
works only if git got the URL as written; no command prints the token
Implements [[tasks/harmony-2961]]
…ject check's URL
- a rotated token made the mismatch warning print the same hidden URL
twice; it now adds that they differ only in their hidden credentials
- tests: project check prints the hidden URL of a missing project, and
each clone's origin is the token URL exactly (insteadOf matches a
prefix, so the clone alone proved less)
- README: meta's own messages show the token as ***

Plan item F8 (fixes U48 and U49 from the 2026-10-31 drive tests). Task:
tasks/harmony-2961.Reworked again on 2026-10-31, after the owner's second decision: meta does not refuse credentials in repo URLs. A token in a git URL is a normal git feature, and meta doesn't limit it. Two earlier designs are gone, and both are in this PR's force-push history and in
tasks/harmony-2961:What is left: a URL with
user:token@is accepted and reaches git unchanged, and wherever meta prints a URL itself, one type shows***for the token. Nothing scans text.What was wrong
repo: https://alice:ghp_…@host/org/svc.gitin.meta.yaml, the token showed inmeta git update(and--dry-run),meta git clone,meta project list(text and--json),meta project checkandmeta context --json(chaos-11).ext::sh -c …parsed as scp-stylehost:pathwith hostext, so meta ranssh ext. That failed, so meta fell back to cloning one repo at a time, and said so only in alog::warn!(chaos-16).What changed
One URL type for printing.
meta_core::git::GitUrlwraps a URL in a private field. Whatever prints it (Display,Debug,Serialize) shows***for its credentials (https://***@host/r) and escapes control characters. Git gets the URL only throughGitUrl::as_git_arg(), exactly as written. Every field that holds a repo URL is now aGitUrl, so the compiler found every place meta prints one:repoandremote_url()(a clone'sorigin);meta git clone <url>(its--dry-runline too);Credentials means:
user:password@, the:possibly%3A), in any URL;http(s)/ftp(s)URL, where a token may stand in for the user name (https://ghp_…@github.com/…).git@host:org/r.git) prints as it is, and so does a helper's own user-like part (codecommit::us-east-1://profile@repo).persistent-https::https://…) is checked the same way.ext::'s address is a command, not a URL.The remote-mismatch warning's "Fix manually with" line can't print a hidden URL, as
git remote set-urlwould then store***. For a configured URL with credentials it saysremote set-url origin <the repo URL in .meta.yaml>. When the two URLs differ only in their credentials (a rotated token), both print the same, so the warning adds(they differ only in their hidden credentials).What git, ssh or a command meta runs for you prints is not meta's printing and passes through as it is. Git hides the token in its own messages (
fatal: unable to access 'https://127.0.0.1:9/org/svc.git/').meta_get_config(meta-mcp) shows.meta.yamlas written, as on main: the file is the user's, token included.Docs. The README's project-fields table gets one line: a token in a
repoURL works, and meta's own messages show it as***, but it is stored in plain text in.meta.yamland in the clone's.git/config; prefer a git credential helper such asgh auth setup-git.Remote helpers first, as in git. A URL starting with
<transport>::is a remote helper and never ssh. The transport name follows git's rule: a letter or digit, then letters, digits,+,-,.. Schemes match case-sensitively, as in git (SSH://names a helper). Ascheme://URL's host part ends at/,?or#. An ssh user with:or%gets no ssh multiplexing.No raw argument log. The git plugin no longer logs its raw arguments at debug level: with
RUST_LOG=debug,meta git clone <token URL>showed the token there.Visible ssh fallback (F8's invariant). When ssh multiplexing can't be set up and meta falls back to one repo at a time, it prints a
