Summary

Two things, in four commits.

README. Rewritten for humans. OAuth is documented as the primary sign-in for both hosts, since Codex supports codex mcp login with dynamic client registration; the personal API key stays as the Codex alternative, folded into the Codex install steps. Everything only an agent would act on is removed, because no host loads the README and each topic already lives in a skill.

Skills. Restructured from five overlapping files into six with one concern each and a single copy of every rule:

  • deepnote-mcp: shared rules only. Tool catalogue, general rules, safety rules, response style. The routing table and the mandated intro sentence are gone.
  • deepnote-workspace (new): workspace summary with one table plus row rules, and integration mapping.
  • deepnote-notebooks: inspection and editing merged, the Active Notebook Rule, all 26 block types from the create_block schema, and how lists work.
  • deepnote-runs (replaces deepnote-data-execution): execution, inputs, history, one copy of the snapshot rule, report tables.
  • deepnote-static-sites (new): the publishing workflow that lived in the hub.
  • deepnote-links: URL shapes and a trimmed UTM section.

Claims the live tool schemas contradict are removed: single-block runs exist via blockIds, delete_block exists, snapshotDelivery has a blocks mode, and publish_static_site and update_project are advertised by the hosted server.

Skills go from 7,092 words in five files to about 5,000 in six.

Verification

  • claude plugin validate --strict passes for the marketplace and the plugin.
  • claude --plugin-dir plugins/deepnote plugin details lists the six skills and the MCP server.
  • Every tool name documented before is still present in backticks, so the daily drift workflow keeps working.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The README now documents installation, authentication, capabilities, development, validation, and troubleshooting. MCP guidance covers tools, safety, pagination, unavailable servers, and errors. Notebook guidance covers inspection, creation, editing, ordering, verification, and reporting. New skills cover runs, static sites, and workspace operations. Data-execution and standalone notebook-editing skills were removed. Link attribution rules were updated.

Codex now supports OAuth for remote MCP servers (`codex mcp login`), so the
claim that Codex needs a personal API key is outdated. Document OAuth as the
primary sign-in for both hosts and keep the API key as the Codex alternative.

Strip everything that only an agent would act on: response formats, tool
parameter rules, pagination and UTM guidance, and the behavioural
instructions. No host loads the README, and every one of those topics already
lives in the skills under plugins/deepnote/skills.

Drop the Authentication section: its OAuth bullet repeated the install
steps and its framing implied Claude Code could use an API key, which the
plugin does not support. The Codex-only key setup now lives inline under
the Codex install steps. Also trim pin instructions, the capability
boundary sentence, and the prompt list.

…ch rule

Before, five skills repeated the tool catalogue three times, the get_run
snapshot rule six times, the editing rules twice, and the capability
boundary, integration "cached not live" rule, run-input rules, and
active-notebook rule several times each. The hub's routing table also
pointed at workflow sections that did not exist.

Now:

- deepnote-mcp is only the hub: when to use, the single tool catalogue with
argument details, a routing table whose targets exist, general rules
(including pagination and docs lookup), safety rules with the one copy of
the capability boundary, and response style.
- deepnote-workspace (new) owns the workspace summary, now with one summary
table plus row rules instead of two tables, and integration mapping with
cached structure and the usage tools.
- deepnote-notebooks absorbs deepnote-notebook-editing: inspection, code
guidance, editing, the one copy of the Active Notebook Rule, block
creation, update, reordering, and edit reporting.
- deepnote-runs replaces deepnote-data-execution: execution, inputs,
history, the one copy of the snapshot delivery rule, sensitive outputs,
and the run and debugging report tables.
- deepnote-static-sites (new) holds the publishing workflow that lived in
  the hub.
- deepnote-links keeps its URL, slug, and UTM rules; its creation rules now
point at the Active Notebook Rule.

Every tool name documented before is still present in backticks, so the
daily MCP drift check keeps working. Total size goes from 7,092 to 5,618
words across six files. Validated with claude plugin validate --strict.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ist all block types

- Remove the hub's routing table, which duplicated the frontmatter
descriptions that actually trigger skills, and the mandated intro
sentence, which recited marketing copy and was wrong about auth.
- Trim the UTM section of deepnote-links to the host table, one URL
  template, and the utm_content / utm_term rules.
- Remove claims the live tool schemas contradict: single-block execution
exists (create_run blockIds in live mode), blocks can be deleted
(delete_block), get_run has a third snapshotDelivery mode (blocks), and
publish_static_site / update_project are advertised by the hosted server.
- Restore the hub's capability boundary bullet and grounded-response
paragraph, which an earlier edit had dropped, and list block deletion
and notebook renaming among the server's capabilities.
- List all 26 block types from the create_block schema in
deepnote-notebooks and explain lists: one text-cell-bullet or
text-cell-todo per item, no nesting or numbering, markdown for ordered
  lists.

existing collapse behavior and other row fields.

In `@README.md`:
- Line 16: Update the README authentication instructions around the `/mcp` and
OAuth guidance to document that OAuth currently reaches an internal Deepnote
consent error. Keep the Claude Code limitation that OAuth is the only option
explicit, and direct Codex users to the DEEPNOTE_MCP_TOKEN API-key workaround
before or alongside the OAuth instructions.
- Line 11: Add an appropriate language identifier, preferably text, to each of
the three fenced code blocks in README.md, including the fences referenced by
the review, so markdownlint MD040 is satisfied.

…rite safety

From CodeRabbit's review of #15, accepted where the finding held up:

- Notebooks: each edit checks only its own tool, including delete_block,
instead of requiring every write tool; cautions cover secrets and
configuration objects, matching the runs skill.
- Workspace: collapsed rows may say "Usage not checked", consistent with
the row rules; "None found" only when usage was checked.
- Hub: deletion, integration attach/detach, and static-site sharing changes
count as persistent writes done only when the user asked for them.
- README: language identifiers on the three slash-command fences.

Also fixed from checking the live server: list_projects rows expose
isInit, isScheduled, and lastRunAt, not lastRunId; get_run returns
createdAt and completedAt.

Rejected: bounded polling with fixed intervals (arbitrary numbers, the
existing rule already stops when a run is clearly still running), the
claim that get_run lacks a start time (it returns createdAt), and the
request to document the temporary OAuth consent bug in the README (tracked
in BLU-6368, noted in the PR).

I pointed the agent to both this PR and deepnote-internal and some inconsistencies have surfaced:

  1. Blocking: two skill descriptions are invalid YAML.
The unquoted colon-space sequences in deepnote-notebooks/SKILL.md and deepnote-workspace/SKILL.md break frontmatter parsing. Both Claude’s strict validator and Codex’s plugin validator fail. Quote the complete descriptions or use folded YAML scalars.

  2. Blocking for release: plugin versions were not bumped.
Both Codex and Claude manifests remain at 0.2.0, unchanged from main, despite this PR replacing installed skills. As README.md itself notes, hosts only update when the version changes.

  3. get_integration’s response shape is documented incorrectly.
deepnote-workspace/SKILL.md says the response contains tables. The MCP adapter deliberately removes that field and returns tablesJsonPreview, tablesTruncated, and optional tableNames. The skill should explain parsing the preview and refiltering when it is truncated.

  4. Targeted-run arguments are incomplete.
deepnote-mcp/SKILL.md omits that targeted execution requires both detached: false and a non-empty, unique blockIds. The implementation defaults detached to true and otherwise returns 400: blockIds is not supported for detached runs. runDependentBlocks also requires blockIds.

  5. The documented run statuses do not match the implementation.
deepnote-runs/SKILL.md uses failed, but the actual statuses are pending, running, success, error, internal_error, and stopped. The reporting and debugging examples should use those values.

  6. The snapshot workflow ignores the new blocks mode.
deepnote-runs/SKILL.md recommends full inline snapshots for ordinary output inspection. snapshotDelivery: "blocks" returns executed blocks and outputs without source, making it the better default for output summaries. Reserve inline for cases requiring the complete snapshot.

  7. The local development refresh instruction is wrong.
README.md tells developers to run codex plugin marketplace upgrade deepnote. That command refreshes Git marketplace snapshots; it does not refresh a local marketplace installation. Local changes require a version/cachebuster update, reinstalling with codex plugin add deepnote@deepnote, and testing in a new session.

The unconditional get_notebook prerequisite conflicts with the documented create_project and create_notebook workflows, which create the active notebook before its ID can be read. Scope the rule to existing notebooks, then call get_notebook on the returned or default notebook before later edits or runs.
