Description

Adds a mosaic/no-render-clock lint rule that flags Date.now() and new Date() when they run during render: in a component or hook body, or in a useState, useMemo or useRef initializer. The message points to useNow, so these reads go through MosaicNowProvider and the server and client agree. Reads in effects, event handlers, useCallback and machine actions are still allowed, and so is a parsed date like new Date(value).

Matches Render-time clock reads flagged

Tested on 5c7afda3, untouched since — Hook body, component body, useState, useMemo, useRef, useState(Date.now) and Array.from callback reads are each flagged with the useNow message; before, the same file gets none.

Walkthrough

The change adds a Mosaic lint rule that reports Date.now() and zero-argument new Date() reads in render paths. It registers the rule in the plugin, enables it for selected TypeScript and TSX source files, and adds tests for render contexts, allowed contexts, and exclusions.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Possibly related PRs

  • clerk/javascript#10651: Migrates Mosaic linting to Oxlint and changes the plugin and import-guard test harness, which this change also modifies.
  • clerk/javascript#10681: Runs Mosaic's Oxlint configuration on staged source files, which includes the rule added by this change.

Suggested reviewers: austincalvelage

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 5c7af

The lint rule can miss some render-time clock reads, leaving potential hydration mismatches undetected. These gaps can be addressed as a bounded follow-up.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: a new lint rule that flags clock reads (Date.now() and new Date()) during render in the mosaic package. The rule and its scope match the changeset, so the title is accurate. The 'chore' prefix is a conventional-commit type and does not affect the check.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description states that the PR adds a mosaic/no-render-clock lint rule that flags Date.now() and new Date() during render. It lists the allowed cases, the exemptions for use-now.ts and mosaic-provider.tsx, and the stacking on #10619. This matches the changeset, which adds the rule, its tests, its plugin registration, and the oxlint config entry.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 8 functions across 4 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Re the Proof finding: useState(Date.now) is now flagged too (44f4fd3). A Date.now reference passed to a render helper like useState reads the clock during render, same as the arrow form. Added a test for it.

Classify useSyncExternalStore snapshot callbacks as render-time callbacks.

readsDuringRender currently exempts every callback passed to useSyncExternalStore, so render-time Date.now() and zero-argument new Date() calls can pass mosaic/no-render-clock. Handle the subscribe argument separately, because React invokes the second and third arguments as snapshots during render or hydration.

Recognize TypeScript-wrapped render initializers.

If a hook calls useState((() => Date.now()) as () => number), the arrow function’s parent is a TSAsExpression, not a CallExpression. isCallbackArgument returns false, and the rule misses a clock read that runs during render. useState(Date.now as () => number) also bypasses the member-expression check. Walk through TypeScript expression wrappers to find the argument’s call, and use that call when checking whether the callback is deferred. Add both forms to the rule tests.

As per coding guidelines, “Any current time read during render” uses useNow.
