Description

This PR :-

  • Adds `limits.peer` with separate subscription caps and message rate limits for authenticated peering peers.
  • Peer REQ, COUNT and NIP-77 filter handling use peer caps instead of client caps; a full-feed subscription no longer trips `max_subscriptions` or the client EWMA message bucket.
  • `limits.peer.subscription.maxLimit` defaults to 0 (no cap), so a peer can request a full feed.
  • Peer messages are counted in a separate rate-limit bucket; defaults remain high but finite.
  • Only a verified AUTH from an enabled `peering.peers` pubkey selects peer limits. Unauthenticated and unconfigured connections keep the existing client limits exactly as before.
  • Documents and validates the new limits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Authenticated connections from configured peers now use separate subscription and message-rate limits; other connections retain client limits.
    • Peer defaults allow up to 100 subscriptions, 100 filters, and 10,000 filter values. Subscription IDs can be up to 256 characters.
    • Peer feeds have no result-limit cap by default and exclude deleted or expired events. Filter counts are governed by connection-specific limits, checked before duplicate filters are removed.
    • Feed reads wait for pending sends to complete, helping accommodate slower connections.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on peer feed limits and documented available settings and defaults.

Walkthrough

Configured peers now use separate subscription and message limits. Request handlers apply peer-aware subscription checks, and peer feed queries support configurable limits, event exclusions, and socket backpressure. REQ and COUNT schemas no longer impose a fixed filter-count cap.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to e8e8f

Peer limits and callback-based feed delivery are in place. No material merge risk remains identified.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to e8e8f

Peer authentication and event-read controls remain in place. However, the new send backpressure also applies to ordinary clients and can prolong database-backed reads while a client reads slowly, creating a potential shared-capacity denial of service.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Network backpressure now controls the lifetime of an open database-backed feed, including ordinary unauthenticated subscriptions. Given enough matching event data to exhaust buffering, a slow reader that keeps its connection alive can prolong query-pool occupancy; concurrent subscriptions may starve unrelated requests. The base drained results independently of socket completion. CLOSE and disconnect provide cancellation, but neither requires a deliberately slow client to terminate, and the inspected path has no send or feed-duration bound. Exact deployed-version pool retention and production timeouts remain unverified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The slow-reader concern does not require a configured peer key: ordinary public-event subscriptions use the same send wait. Its immediate scope is shared database capacity used by the affected process. Read-replica separation can contain it to read capacity; without replicas, reads use the cached master client. Deployment-wide worker and replica exposure is unknown.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — For ARCH-PEER-FEED-DB-RETENTION, an attacker requests sufficiently large matching result sets, slows socket consumption, and keeps the connection alive. The asynchronous transform pauses repository consumption while sends remain pending, potentially occupying pooled connections until other requests cannot acquire one. This is a newly introduced coupling, although outbound-buffer exhaustion was already a risk in the base.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Peer resource allowances do not themselves bypass restricted-event authorization. Where restricted reads are enabled, stored and live delivery retain author-or-recipient checks using current authenticated pubkeys. COUNT and reconciliation retain their separate authorization checks.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Trust is rechecked when peer identity is queried, but an admitted feed snapshots peer query options at initiation. Restricted-event checks continue consulting current authentication. Whether configuration revocation must cancel or downgrade an already-running full feed is not established by the supplied policy.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Bound how long network delivery can retain database resources: either enforce a send/feed deadline that aborts the repository stream, or fetch bounded pages and release database resources before awaiting slow socket delivery. Validate the boundary with a client that remains heartbeat-active while consuming results slowly, using the declared production dependency versions.

[High impact] The PR appears safe to merge; the stored-read stall is fixed and no new blocking issue was found.

Summary

Authenticated, configured peers receive separate subscription and message limits. Peer reads can request the full stored feed.

  • Peer requests can read full feeds without overwhelming slow sockets.
  • Configured peers use their own request and message limits.

Bound filters before deduplication.

The PR removes the schema cap of 12 elements, but uniqWith(equals, message.slice(2)) still runs before canSubscribe and canCount. The configured maxFilters limit does not bound this work. The default 524,288-byte payload limit accepts a 168,901-byte frame with 10,000 distinct filters, and one frame is enough to trigger quadratic synchronous work. Apply the connection-specific filter bound before deduplication, or use bounded deduplication. COUNT has the same ordering.

uniqWith performs deduplication, or use deduplication that stops once the

`ws` does not emit `drain` on the WebSocket object, so waiting for it could stall stored reads forever. Track the send completion callback instead and have waitForWritable() await the last frame's flush.
