Description

This PR :-

  • Adds `peering.peers[]` (pubkey and relayUrl) as the operator-configured trust list. Peers are identified by relay pubkey, never by URL alone.
  • Adds outbound NIP-42 AUTH signed with the relay's own keypair: connect, wait for the challenge, send kind 22242, require `OK true`.
  • Inbound: only a verified AUTH from an enabled configured pubkey marks the connection as a peer. Unconfigured valid keys stay ordinary clients.
  • Attaches the peer pubkey to connection state via `getPeerPubkey()`/`setPeerPubkey()`; it expires with the NIP-42 session and clears on socket close.
  • Documents relay key storage and the AUTH exchange in `docs/PEERING.md`, plus the new settings in `CONFIGURATION.md`.

Security

  • Identity is proven only by signature verification; a URL or self-declared key never grants peer status.
  • Disabled/unconfigured peers get no recognition.
  • Peer state is session-scoped, so an expired AUTH cannot retain peer treatment.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Configure peering partners by relay public key and WebSocket URL. Connections are recognized as peers only after successful NIP-42 authentication with a configured key.
    • Outbound connections can authenticate to peer relays using the relay’s configured identity.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on peering identity, authentication, and peer settings.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Peer recognition is cleared when authentication expires, a peer is disabled or removed, or the connection closes.
    • Peer settings now validate public keys, relay URLs, duplicate keys, and the enabled flag.

Walkthrough

The change adds configured peer settings and NIP-42 authentication. Inbound sockets receive peer status only for configured pubkeys that authenticate successfully. Outbound authentication sends a signed AUTH event and succeeds only after a matching positive OK response.

Changes: Peer Relay Authentication

Layer / File(s) Summary
Peer identity and configuration

Adds configured peers identified by pubkey, with a relay URL and optional enabled flag. Validation accepts hex and npub keys, rejects duplicate normalized keys and invalid settings, and defaults the peer list to empty. Documentation describes peer identity and key handling.
Inbound peer recognition
src/@types/adapters.ts, src/adapters/web-socket-adapter.ts, src/handlers/auth-message-handler.ts, test/unit/adapters/web-socket-adapter.spec.ts, test/unit/handlers/auth-message-handler.spec.ts
After successful AUTH, the handler assigns peer status only to configured pubkeys. The adapter exposes that status only while the pubkey remains authenticated and configured, and clears it when the connection closes.
Outbound relay authentication
src/utils/peering-auth.ts, test/unit/utils/peering-auth-client.spec.ts
Builds and signs a NIP-42 AUTH event, sends it in response to a relay challenge, and resolves after a matching OK true. Rejections, socket failures, and timeouts reject the authentication attempt.

Possibly related issues

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to da699

This change adds configured peer trust and NIP-42 authentication. No concrete merge-blocking issue remains. Outbound authentication is not yet wired into production, so any transport-security hardening for it can wait until it is.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to da699

Peer recognition is restricted to configured signing keys. However, outbound authentication permits plaintext connections, allowing an interceptor to impersonate a relay when that flow is used. Immediate exposure is limited because automatic outbound peering and peer-specific privileges are not yet connected.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new outbound primitive signs challenges received over permitted plaintext WebSockets without channel binding. If invoked over an intercepted connection, its proof can authenticate an attacker-controlled connection to the intended relay as the victim. This is a conditional integration risk, not evidence of an active automatic outbound path: no production caller was found, and peer labels currently confer no additional production privileges.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The substitution path requires invocation of the outbound utility over an attacker-interceptable plaintext connection. Its direct scope is authentication as the victim signing key on an attacker-controlled socket to a relay accepting that key. Private-key recovery, arbitrary event signing, feed access, administrative access and broader service compromise are not established. No production outbound caller or peer-label privilege consumer was found.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The retained finding concerns live challenge substitution, not replay of an already accepted event. An interceptor opens another socket to the intended relay, forwards that socket's fresh challenge to the victim, obtains the victim's signed response, and submits it on the attacker's socket. The signature, timestamp, hostname and receiving-socket challenge remain valid, and the event ID has not previously been accepted there. The new utility introduces this signing behavior; production invocation is not demonstrated.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Ordinary clients cannot obtain peer recognition merely by selecting a URL or claiming a key. They must produce a valid AUTH signature for an enabled configured key. Session expiry and live configuration checks invalidate peer reads. These controls constrain identity assignment but do not establish integrity of a plaintext outbound transport or prove the remote relay's configured key.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Close cleanup clears authentication and peer state, but AUTH validation already awaiting completion can subsequently repopulate the closed adapter. The asynchronous authentication pattern predates this PR; peer state now inherits it. Current send guards and the absence of production peer-state consumers limit this to a lifecycle inconsistency rather than a demonstrated live privilege path.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Before production integration, require an authenticated integrity-protected transport before signing outbound challenges, or explicitly establish an equivalent protection for non-TLS transports. Keep client AUTH success separate from verification of the remote relay's configured signing identity before granting future peer-specific capabilities.

[Low impact] The PR appears safe to merge; the previous peer-revocation finding is fixed.

Summary

Adds configured relay peers and outbound NIP-42 AUTH.

  • Configured relay keys identify authenticated peer connections.
