ADFA-5446: Drop restore: install copies, uninstall deletes after a confirm - #2045
Uninstalling a template failed whenever a same-named file was already in Downloads, because uninstall tried to "restore" the file there. Per review, this PR now removes restore entirely instead of adding a Replace step: install copies, uninstall deletes, and the Templates tab matches the Plugins tab. This supersedes #2049, which was closed.
Install copies.installTemplate leaves the Downloads original in place, and Install opens an "Install Template Collection" dialog with the Plugins tab's "Delete installation file after install" checkbox.
Uninstall deletes the installed copy, plugin or not.
Removed: the earlier commits' overwrite parameter, TemplateReplaceConflictException, the "Replace file in Downloads?" dialog and its strings.
9a4b51690 - confirm before uninstalling, as the Plugins tab does. The message now says the template is removed and how to get it back (reinstall the .cgt or the plugin), not that it moves to Downloads. The Uninstall and Delete messages now scroll: AlertDialog's text slot doesn't, so a long name at 2x font scale was clipped.
68d874881 - a failed install no longer leaves a truncated .cgt in the templates directory. Such a file would be unlisted, impossible to uninstall, and would block every retry (CodeRabbit).
Getting a template back: reinstall it from its .cgt (the original stays in Downloads and is listed again once the installed copy is gone), or reinstall the plugin that provided it.
Testing
TemplateRepositoryImplTest (19) and TemplateManagerViewModelTest (11) pass; commit 1 alone passes 18 + 8. :app compiles and spotlessCheck passes.
With the ask-first step reverted, uninstallTemplateEvent_onlyAsksForConfirmation fails, and nothing else does. installTemplate_copyFailsPartway_leavesNoPartialFileInTheStore fails without commit 3. The repository's copy-and-delete tests fail against the old move-and-restore code; that was checked on ADFA-5444: Copy templates on install, delete on uninstall, no restore #2049, and they're the same tests.
…ntly
Uninstalling a template refused to run when a same-named file already
sat in Downloads, with no way to proceed - the user's only options
were delete the Downloads file themselves or give up. Add an
"Uninstall template?" confirmation (mirroring the existing Delete
confirmation) and, on a Downloads name collision, a "Replace file in
Downloads?" prompt that lets the user overwrite it instead of hitting
a dead end.
TemplateRepository.uninstallTemplate gains an `overwrite` parameter;
a collision without it now returns TemplateReplaceConflictException
instead of a generic IllegalStateException, so the ViewModel can
route it to the new confirmation dialog rather than a plain error
toast.

Installing a template copies it from Downloads. The original stays in Downloads unless you select “Delete installation file after install.”
Uninstalling asks for confirmation, then deletes the installed copy. It does not restore the file to Downloads. To use the template again, reinstall its .cgt file or the plugin that provided it.
An installed template takes precedence over a same-named Downloads copy. The Downloads copy becomes available again after uninstall.
The install and uninstall confirmation dialogs include cancel and dismiss actions. The delete confirmation message scrolls to prevent clipping.
The author reports that 19 TemplateRepositoryImplTest tests and 11 TemplateManagerViewModelTest tests pass, and that :app compiles and spotlessCheck passes. These results are author-reported.
The author reports on-device checks of the Install dialog and install/uninstall behavior on a Galaxy Tab. The Uninstall dialog and scrollable Delete message have not been checked on device.
Risk: uninstall deletes the installed copy. Users need the original .cgt file or the providing plugin to recover the template. If the optional source deletion after install is selected, the Downloads copy is also deleted after a successful install.
Template installation now copies the archive and retains the Downloads source unless the user chooses to delete it after a successful install. Install and uninstall requests display confirmation dialogs. Uninstallation deletes the installed archive without restoring it to Downloads.

Install and uninstall events emit confirmation effects. Confirmed installation can delete the Downloads source after a successful install. Tests cover confirmation, operation results, and source-deletion failures.
Compose confirmation dialogs and screen state app/src/main/java/com/itsaky/androidide/ui/compose/templates/TemplateManagerDialogs.kt, app/src/main/java/com/itsaky/androidide/ui/compose/templates/TemplateManagerScreen.kt, resources/src/main/res/values/strings.xml
The screen stores confirmation state by item path and renders dialogs for matching items. The install dialog provides an unchecked source-deletion option. The uninstall dialog displays the template name and recovery options.
Installing a template now copies the file, and a failed copy cleans up after itself. A very unlikely race could cause cleanup to remove another writer's file with the same name. This is low risk and safe to merge, and ownership-safe cleanup can be done as a follow-up.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 98430
The confirmation flow improves normal operation, but a file appearing while uninstall is copying can still be replaced without replacement approval. Shared temporary-file ownership also weakens isolation between overlapping operations. The demonstrated impact is local file integrity, not remote access or increased privileges.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: Replacement consent is not enforced at commit. When overwrite=false and the initial lookup finds no collision, a same-named file created during staging is still replaced by the unconditional REPLACE_EXISTING move. The confirmed retry also carries only a Boolean and reselects the current case-insensitive match rather than carrying the destination shown in the dialog. These gaps allow filesystem changes between inspection and execution to escape the confirmation decision.
Medium · reliability · inferred: The new staging file has a deterministic shared-directory name, is copied with overwrite=true, and is deleted unconditionally in finally. Overlapping operations targeting the same basename therefore manipulate the same staging entry without exclusive ownership; a pre-existing entry at that path is also overwritten. One operation can replace or remove another operation's staging file, undermining the intended copy-before-delete failure containment.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The established exposure is device-local: the installed archive, a same-named Downloads entry, and its staging entry. A competing writer can affect the replacement decision during a user-initiated uninstall. Arbitrary private-file access, cross-user exposure, or remote reachability is not established; platform-specific storage permissions remain unverified.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A concrete integrity failure is possible when the non-overwrite lookup finds no collision, another operation creates the destination while staging proceeds, and the final move replaces that destination without raising the replacement dialog. This follows from source ordering; it was not runtime-reproduced.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The UI supplies explicit replacement approval, and the repository rejects an already-discovered collision when overwrite=false. However, the helper receives no overwrite policy, and the retry does not carry the displayed destination name, so those controls are not bound to the final write.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Ordinary staging failure occurs before source deletion, and temporary cleanup uses finally. CancellationException is rethrown. These are useful containment controls, but neither establishes atomicity across move, source deletion, and provider refresh or exclusive ownership of cleanup targets.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Carry replacement policy through commit, preserve the authorized destination identity across retries, and use exclusively created operation-owned staging files. Serialize conflicting transitions and restrict rollback to entries still owned by that operation. Validate late-arriving destinations, repeated calls, interruption, and move failure; do not assume a symlink exploit without confirming the deployed storage behavior.

…-fails message
The replace-conflict path returns early via return@withContext, so it
never reached the catch blocks' logger.error call the old
IllegalStateException path used to hit - a repeated replace conflict
left no log trace. Log it directly where it's decided instead.
Also: when overwrite=true and the subsequent source delete fails, the
old Downloads content has already been irrecoverably replaced, but the
thrown message was identical to the non-overwrite rollback case ("failed
to delete source file"), which reads as if nothing happened. The
message now says the template exists in both places, since that's
what's actually true and rolling back would only destroy the new copy
too for nothing.

CodeRabbit review nitpicks: TemplateRepositoryImpl.uninstallTemplate's
rollback-on-delete-failure contract, ShowUninstallConfirmation, and
UninstallTemplateConfirmationDialog were undocumented public
declarations. Added brief KDoc to each.
Not changed: CodeRabbit's suggestion that the test file's single-arg
uninstallTemplate calls need an explicit `overwrite = false` because
"the override does not inherit the interface default" is incorrect -
Kotlin overrides inherit the base declaration's default parameter
value at every call site regardless of the reference's static type,
and those exact calls already compile and pass.

Added KDoc to TemplateRepositoryImpl.uninstallTemplate documenting the rollback-on-delete-failure contract, ShowUninstallConfirmation, and UninstallTemplateConfirmationDialog. ✅ Resolved.
Not changed: the suggestion that the test file's single-arg uninstallTemplate(item) calls need an explicit overwrite = false because "the override does not inherit the interface default" is incorrect. Kotlin overrides inherit the base declaration's default parameter value at every call site regardless of the calling reference's static type - those exact calls (on a TemplateRepositoryImpl-typed variable) already compile and have passed in every test run this session.
Address review findings on #2045:
- copyTo(overwrite = true) deletes the target before copying, so a copy
that failed partway destroyed the user's Downloads file. Copy into a
hidden .part file and rename it into place; a failed copy now leaves
the existing file intact and no truncated file behind.
- The Replace dialog showed the extension-less display name, which names
no real file. It now shows the conflicting file's exact name on disk,
carried from TemplateReplaceConflictException.
- The conflict check was case-sensitive while the list filter is not, so
a Downloads twin differing only in case was hidden and silently
duplicated. Match it case-insensitively and replace that file in place.

File.renameTo leaves replacing an existing target unspecified, and a

The whole idea of "restore" is misguided. Deleting a template simply deletes it. If the user wants to re-install it, they can re-install it the same way they installed it the first time. Keep it simple.
copyThroughTempFile used Files.move(..., REPLACE_EXISTING) unconditionally,
so a file that appeared at the target path without the caller's prior
existence check seeing it (a race, or the check itself failing to list the
directory) was silently overwritten - exactly the bug class this PR exists
to fix, just reached a different way.
copyThroughTempFile now takes replaceExisting, true only when the
uninstallTemplate caller already found and confirmed the collision. In the
unconfirmed case, Files.move without REPLACE_EXISTING throws
FileAlreadyExistsException if something is there after all; that's now
converted to the same TemplateReplaceConflictException the normal pre-check
already raises, so the ViewModel's existing Replace-confirmation handling
covers it without any new UI path.
Regression test: uninstallTemplate_existingFileInvisibleToTheLookup_
stillFailsWithReplaceConflict_insteadOfOverwriting makes downloadDir
unreadable so the pre-move listFiles() lookup misses an existing file
there. Against the old code this reaches success and then
ITemplateProvider.getInstance(reload = true), which isn't wired up on the
unit test classpath (see the class's own KDoc on why a happy-path test
isn't included) - so the old code silently treats this as success. It
fails with TemplateReplaceConflictException now.
Verified: :app:compileV8DebugKotlin, Spotless, and
TemplateRepositoryImplTest (19/19) pass.

Per review: remove the idea of restoring an uninstalled template to
Downloads, which is what made uninstall fail whenever a same-named file
was already there. This replaces the overwrite/Replace-in-Downloads
flow with the design from #2049 (Hal's option 1), applied onto current
stage:
- installTemplate copies the .cgt and leaves the Downloads original;
uninstallTemplate deletes the installed copy, whatever its provenance.
- Install opens an "Install Template Collection" dialog with the
Plugins tab's "Delete installation file after install" checkbox.
- Removed: the overwrite parameter, TemplateReplaceConflictException,
ShowReplaceConfirmation, ReplaceTemplateInDownloadsDialog and its
strings.
A user reinstalls from the original .cgt, which the list shows again
once the installed copy is gone, or by reinstalling the plugin that
provided it.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Keeps this PR's confirm-before-uninstall step, which the Plugins tab
also has, now that nothing is restored: Uninstall opens a dialog and
confirmUninstallTemplate does the work, like confirmDeleteDownloadFile.
The message says the template is removed and how to get it back
(reinstall the .cgt or the plugin), instead of "moves it back to
Downloads".
The Uninstall and Delete messages now scroll. AlertDialog's text slot
does not, so a long file name at 2x font scale was clipped (CodeRabbit).
The Install dialog already scrolled.
The uninstall-event test fails with the ask-first step reverted.

installTemplate copies straight to the final path in templatesDir. A
copy that failed partway (storage full, say) left a truncated .cgt that
never parses, so it was unlisted and could not be uninstalled, and every
retry then failed with "already exists". Delete it on IOException, but
not on FileAlreadyExistsException: that file belongs to another writer
(CodeRabbit).
The new test fails without the fix on the "no partial file" assertion.

Delete only a destination this install owns.
If another writer creates dest after the existence check, and opening item.file then throws an IOException, this catch deletes the other writer’s file. File.copyTo checks destination existence before it opens the source, so the exception does not prove that this install created dest. Copy through an owned staging file and clean up only that file; publish it with a no-clobber operation. (github.com)

ADFA-5446
Uninstalling a template failed whenever a same-named file was already in Downloads, because uninstall tried to "restore" the file there. Per review, this PR now removes restore entirely instead of adding a Replace step: install copies, uninstall deletes, and the Templates tab matches the Plugins tab. This supersedes #2049, which was closed.
