Pulso now reads every HealthKit type the iOS SDK lets a third-party app read, instead of a hand-picked list of 58.

What changes

  • Type list generated from the SDK. scripts/gen_healthkit_catalog.py parses the SDK's HealthKit headers into Pulso/Health/HealthKitCatalog.generated.swift. The file lists every quantity, category and characteristic identifier with its iOS availability and canonical unit, plus names for all 71 HealthKit enums. Category values, workout activities, ECG classifications and state-of-mind labels therefore go on the wire by name. Identifiers are raw strings resolved at runtime, so the app skips a type newer than the phone's iOS instead of failing. The IPA workflow regenerates the file against the runner's SDK before building and warns if the committed copy is stale. Today it matches iOS 26.5 byte for byte.
  • Sample classes with their own shape. These carry a details object: workouts with events, multisport activities, all statistics, and the uuids of their routes and heart-rate samples; workout routes with GPS points; heartbeat series; ECGs with voltages; audiograms; state of mind and GAD-7/PHQ-9 (iOS 18); vision prescriptions (per-object grant); medication dose events (iOS 26); blood pressure and food correlations.
  • Snapshots for data with no sync cursor. Characteristics, daily activity summaries and the iOS 26 medication list are re-read on each full pass. The app sends only changed records. Each version gets a uuid that is never reused and tombstones the version it replaces; records deleted from Health are tombstoned too.
  • Every sample now carries its source revision, its device and its full metadata.
  • Authorization can't crash the app. HealthKit raises an Objective-C exception when a request names a type it refuses. The app probes the read set first through a small @try wrapper, bisects on failure, and logs and skips refused types. On the iOS 26 simulator the probe found two quirks, both handled. Heartbeat series is accepted only when HRV is requested with it. Medication dose events can't be in the read set at all, so they follow the per-object medication grant.
  • One HKObserverQuery covers all enabled types, and an observer wake syncs only the types that changed.
  • Settings gets All/None toggles per group, buttons for the per-object grants, and a Coverage page that lists what this build syncs and what it skips, with the reason.

Compatibility

The 58 v1.1 types keep their wire keys and units, and a test pins them. New quantity types use the SDK's canonical unit, with % scaled to 0–100 and count/s sent as count/min. All new fields are optional and omitted when absent, so the upstream golden encodings don't change.

Checks

  • CI on macOS 26 with Xcode 26.6 builds the IPA, and all 44 simulator tests pass. New tests check that every catalog type resolves with a usable unit, that HealthKit accepts the probed read set as a whole (204 types on iOS 26, none refused), and that state of mind and GAD-7 serialize their Swift-refined arrays.
  • Five Codex review rounds. Rounds 1 to 4 found ten issues, all fixed. Most were about snapshot records: a reused uuid could leave a dedupe-first receiver with stale content, an activity-summary gap could open after a long pause, deleted medications were never tombstoned, a failed characteristics read could replace good data, and several crash windows existed between queueing a batch and saving its state. The final design journals each snapshot batch with its state in one atomic write and replays it after a failure. Round 5 on a968f3e found nothing.
  • Not verified on a real iPhone. Background delivery, the per-object pickers, and real ECG, route and heartbeat payloads need a device with data.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Sync a broader range of HealthKit data, including activity summaries, characteristics, medications, ECGs, audiograms, and workout routes.
    • Request access to individual data types and view coverage details, including supported, skipped, and declined types.
    • View richer synced records with source, device, metadata, and type-specific details.
  • Improvements
    • Settings now include snapshot sources in group controls, and status shows enabled data types that have delivered data.
    • HealthKit authorization and sync now account for unavailable or declined data types.

Generates the type table from the iOS SDK's HealthKit headers
(scripts/gen_healthkit_catalog.py) instead of a hand-picked list: every
quantity and category type with its canonical unit, the characteristics,
and every HealthKit enum so values serialize by name. CI regenerates it
against the runner's SDK before building the IPA.

Adds the sample classes that need their own shape: workouts with events,
activities, all statistics and links to their routes and heart-rate
samples; workout routes with GPS locations; heartbeat series; ECGs with
voltages; audiograms; state of mind; GAD-7/PHQ-9; vision prescriptions;
iOS 26 medication dose events; blood pressure and food correlations.
Characteristics, daily activity summaries and the medication list sync
as snapshots that resend only what changed.

Every sample now carries its source revision, device and full metadata.
The read set is probed before requesting authorization so a type the OS
refuses is logged and skipped instead of crashing the app, and one
observer query covers all enabled types.

📝 Walkthrough

The change expands HealthKit type registration and data synchronization. It adds SDK-derived catalog generation, authorization handling, sample serialization and enrichment, snapshot syncing, and access and delivery views. CI selects a newer macOS and Xcode setup and preserves test logs.

Changes: HealthKit data and synchronization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Generate the HealthKit catalog and register types
scripts/gen_healthkit_catalog.py, Pulso/Health/TypeRegistry.swift, Pulso/Health/WorkoutActivityName.swift, Pulso.xcodeproj/project.pbxproj, .github/workflows/ipa.yml, PulsoTests/HealthKitCatalogTests.swift, PulsoTests/SerializerTests.swift
A script generates catalog data from SDK headers. The registry uses that catalog for available types, units, access modes, and groups. The Xcode project and IPA workflow include the catalog and its generation; tests check catalog coverage and registry keys.
Handle HealthKit authorization
Pulso/Health/HealthAuthorization.swift, Pulso/App/AppServices.swift, Pulso/Support/*, Pulso/Pulso-Bridging-Header.h, Pulso.xcodeproj/project.pbxproj, PulsoTests/HealthKitCatalogTests.swift
Authorization helpers identify rejected read types and wrap callbacks. App access requests use accepted types, and Objective-C exception handling is wired into the project.
Serialize and enrich HealthKit samples
Pulso/Model/SampleDTO.swift, Pulso/Health/Serializers.swift, Pulso/Health/HealthQueries.swift, PulsoTests/HealthKitCatalogTests.swift
DTOs add source, device, kind, and detail fields, and JSONValue adds array, object, and null support. Serializers and queries add type-specific data and enrichment for HealthKit samples.
Read and version snapshot data
Pulso/Health/Snapshots.swift, Pulso/Health/AnchorStore.swift, PulsoTests/HealthKitCatalogTests.swift
Snapshot readers cover characteristics, daily activity summaries, and annotated medications. Snapshot state fingerprints and versions records, while anchor storage adds raw reads and atomic writes.
Run sync passes and HealthKit observers
Pulso/Sync/SyncEngine.swift, Pulso/Sync/TriggerHub.swift
Sync passes can target selected types, use per-type query limits, enrich samples, and sync snapshots on full passes. Observer changes trigger targeted sync requests.
Show access, coverage, and delivered data
Pulso/Model/AppSettings.swift, Pulso/UI/SettingsView.swift, Pulso/UI/StatusView.swift
Settings include snapshot sources and per-object access controls, and show catalog coverage. Status rows include enabled sample and snapshot types with delivered data.

The read-set probe showed HealthKit accepts heartbeat series only when
HRV is requested alongside it, and refuses medication dose events in the
read set (they follow the per-object medication grant). Types HealthKit
no longer provides are reported as skipped.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A changed snapshot record now gets a new uuid (stable key + content
fingerprint, key kept in details.recordKey) and the version it replaces
is tombstoned, so receivers that keep the first copy of a uuid still
end up with the latest rings or medication. Activity summaries resume
from the last day sent after a gap longer than 35 days. The generator
strips trailing comments before reading enum initializers.

Snapshot versions now take a counter per record and a random epoch per
state instead of a content hash, so A -> B -> A sends three uuids and a
receiver that tombstoned A still takes the change back. The state is
saved once a batch is queued, so a restart can't lose the version a
newer one must supersede. Records missing from a complete read
(characteristics, medications) are tombstoned, unless the read came back
empty, which is what HealthKit returns without access.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…a failed read

Saving the state and queueing the batch are two writes. The versions a
batch uses are now reserved on disk first; after a crash between the
two, the next read supersedes the reserved versions and moves past them
instead of reusing a uuid. A characteristics read where every getter
fails (phone locked) now throws instead of replacing the last good
record with an empty one.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Queueing a snapshot batch and saving the state it leads to are two
writes. Reserving versions ahead of time left gaps (deletions, failed
writes, a stale cache after a partial enqueue). Now the batch and its
state are written together as one atomic journal file first; the batch
is queued from it, then the state saved, then the journal removed. A
failure or crash anywhere in between replays the same journal (same
uuids, harmless to receivers) before the next read. Writes on this path
throw instead of failing silently.

191-191: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Read the medication list once per page, not once per dose event.

enrichDoseEvent runs a full HKUserAnnotatedMedicationQuery for every dose event. medicationDoseEvent uses the default queryLimit of 5000. One backfill page can therefore run up to 5000 identical medication-list queries. Read the list once per sync pass, or cache it in HealthQueries for a short time. Then match each event against that list.

Route and heart-rate links on a workout are skipped when HealthKit
reports those types unauthorized, instead of blocking the workout.
Observer query errors are logged. The generator evaluates hex, shift
and alias enum initializers and skips anything else with a warning
rather than stopping the IPA build. The medication list is read at most
once a minute while enriching dose events.

Nitpick on enrichDoseEvent (HealthQueries.swift:191) fixed in 56ff8c7: the medication list now comes from MedicationListCache, read at most once a minute, so a backfill page no longer runs one medication query per dose event.
