Progress snapshot, not for merge.

This draft PR shows work in progress from the local worktree /root/cortex-dev/worktrees/task8-desktop-wave3. The branch progress/task8-desktop-wave3 is a snapshot of that worktree's uncommitted changes on top of the base commit. It is refreshed with /root/cortex-dev/progress-prs/refresh.sh, which pushes a new fast-forward commit; the worktree itself is never modified. Local evidence (.omo/), dependencies, build output and env files are excluded. Every snapshot is scanned for secrets before it is pushed.

Scope

Desktop Work and Bot surfaces: owned group channels, activity feed, pending approvals, owned specialist hierarchy, i18n for 7 locales, CSP-safe zod (jitless).

Status (from the orchestration ledger)

Wave 3 subunit gate APPROVE 2026-10-06T16:48 (cloud create/prompt refusals proven on task3-assembly and task10, malformed/stale/race inputs refused, 0 POST /v1/code, LOCAL works, mutants fail, unit 411+1, Electron 31/31). Earlier approvals: owned group channels, Work/Bot lifecycle, Code subset, owned hierarchy, pending approvals, i18n/activity/CSP. Open for full Task 8: real-farm cloud run, LOCAL live diff, approval+cancel together, offline guest refusal, update ops, terminal/env/usage/instructions. Known: this branch conflicts with main in packages/desktop/src/main.ts (main moved via #37), so pull_request CI cannot run until rebased.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds remote Code and Work/Bot support across schemas, protocol, core, desktop bindings, renderer screens, persistent device authentication, updater IPC, tests, documentation, vendor records, and localization. Remote sessions now support account-scoped persistence, retained-history recovery, reset cursors, and terminal outcomes.

Merge Risk

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to f6358

Remote Chat fails after device sign-in, and remote Code fails for users who sign in by email. Starting the app offline erases the saved sign-in. Follow-ups on restored conversations that use reasoning models are refused. The branch is also a draft snapshot marked not for merge. Resolve these issues before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to f6358

The change expands persistent sign-in and remote execution capabilities. Account checks, encrypted credentials, stale-session guards, and cloud refusal controls limit exposure, but end-to-end execution authorization and interrupted-operation recovery are not fully demonstrated. No authorization bypass was verified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: New remote Code operations request agent execution using caller-selected session, repository, and message inputs. Available evidence establishes desktop authentication and preflight controls, but not the provider’s independent resource authorization, tool privileges, or recovery guarantees after a request is accepted. Local epoch fencing prevents stale results from being published; it does not establish server-side cancellation or rollback. This is an unresolved authority contract, not a verified authorization bypass.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The intended remote exposure includes the active account’s Code sessions, selected repositories, agent execution, and Bot approval/configuration resources. Update installation affects the desktop application itself. Actual provider-side tool privileges, sandbox boundaries, and maximum cross-tenant exposure remain unresolved; client account scoping does not prove those limits.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The unresolved attack path is manipulation of repository, session, message, or permission inputs before authenticated remote agent execution. Desktop validation and bearer authentication are demonstrated; unauthorized resource access or privilege escalation at the provider is not. The available evidence does not verify an exploitable bypass.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Device-token success is validated through authenticated /v1/me before promotion. Restoration requires the saved origin and account to remain consistent. Code creation checks epoch and cloud availability, cloud turns recheck availability, and inspected refusal paths do not invoke a local fallback executor.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Credential writes and deletions are serialized; native logout deletes local credentials before contacting the provider and again during final cleanup. Bot approval UI suppresses concurrent decisions and rereads pending approvals before confirming removal. Provider revocation after failed logout transport and exactly-once remote approval effects remain outside the demonstrated guarantees.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Establish explicit provider contracts for resource authorization, tool/sandbox authority, idempotency, and cancellation after acceptance. Define retention and erasure policy for persisted transcripts. Preserve cancellation cleanup if an asynchronous credential backend is introduced, and document release-feed signing and rollback requirements.

- Around line 143-148: Update AGENTS.md lines 143-148 to remove the claim that
persistent refresh, durable identity, account-wide discovery, and restart
restoration remain gated, or point readers to the Task7 section. In
docs/engine.md lines 46-51, replace the outdated 100-active/100-archived limit
and producer-pagination claim with the implemented `discover` pagination
contract using `sort=created`, `limit=100`, and cursors; also rename the
“Signed-in Work routines” heading to reflect its content.

Review comments at @packages/app/src/screens/chat/remote-chat.tsx:
- Around line 213-214: Update matches and send in the remote Chat flow to accept
remote sessions with either process or account scope; remove the process-only
restriction from send’s post-create validation while preserving its other
checks.

Review comments at @packages/core/src/remote-sessions.ts:
- Around line 90-101: Update the record-loading loop in `binding()` to validate
each saved view and message array independently; skip and delete any
`remote-record` document that fails validation so one malformed or outdated row
cannot reject the entire account.
- Line 177: Update the reasoning-effort validation in `execute` so the
requirement for an explicit effort applies only to new conversations; existing
conversations identified by `ledger.input.conversationID` inherit the
backend-stored effort. Preserve validation that rejects an explicit effort for a
non-reasoning model.

Review comments at @packages/desktop/src/remote-session.ts:
- Around line 203-206: Update the email-code, verify-email, MFA, and local-login
success path so it creates the Code binding before activating the candidate;
preferably route that path through #promote to keep Chat and Code bindings
consistent. Ensure bindCode returns a valid binding for every successfully
signed-in session.
- Around line 145-162: Update #refresh to invalidate the identity and clear
stored credentials only for explicit refresh refusal (400, 401, or 403) or a
confirmed owner change from /v1/me. For transport failures and other non-200
responses such as 5xx, preserve the pair and throw a provider_error so refresh
can be retried.

- Line 52: Update the finally cleanup in the test so a failed fixture release
through app.evaluate does not prevent app.close from running or replace the
original test failure; handle errors from the release call locally, then always
close the app.

Review comments at @vendor/AGENTS.md:
- Around line 3-5: Update the active-pair guidance in AGENTS.md to match the

unsupported output partial. The admitted reset-id SDK/type pair preserves opaque uint64
Redis cursors, empty reset IDs and discarded-frame notifications. Reset EOF is history-only,
never a new generation or replay. Known history loads every active-path page (200 per request,
10,000 backend path ceiling), retaining ordered parts and retention metadata. Image-history
follow-ups reach backend hydration only with confirmed vision. Persistent refresh, durable
identity, account-wide discovery and restart restoration remain gated. Nine JSON routes under `/api/remote` expose the process-owned service

The docs still describe discovery and restart restoration as gated or capped. The PR implements both. Pagination in remote-chat.ts discover, RemoteSession.restore/#refresh and doc persistence now exist. Two paragraphs still describe the older limits. They contradict docs/connection-modes.md lines 142-156 and the code.

  • AGENTS.md#L143-L148: remove "Persistent refresh, durable identity, account-wide discovery and restart restoration remain gated", or replace it with a pointer to the Task7 section at lines 74-80.
  • docs/engine.md#L46-L51: replace the "at most 100 active and 100 archived … needs producer pagination" sentence with the paginated sort=created/limit=100/cursor contract. Also rename the misleading "Signed-in Work routines" heading at line 12.

As per coding guidelines: "A PR that changes behaviour and leaves docs describing the old behaviour ships a defect."

The renderer refuses every account-scoped session, so remote Chat fails after device sign-in.

Core now creates and restores views with scope: "account" whenever the binding has an accountID (remote-sessions.ts lines 158 and 177). Device sign-in and restart restore always supply an accountID. This component still requires process scope in two places:

  • matches (lines 145-146) checks value.scope === "process".
  • send (line 314) rejects with target.scope !== "process".

As a result, read() calls fail() and shows "unavailable", and a new send fails with "refused". The new session?.scope === "account" branches at lines 213 and 482 can never run.

Accept both scopes in matches and in the post-create check in send.

Proposed fix (lines 145-146 and 314)

One malformed saved record blocks remote sessions for the whole account.

binding() parses every remote-record doc with parse(RemoteSessionView, …) and parse(z.array(RemoteMessageView), …). If one doc fails, the outer catch calls this.clear() and throws. The next binding() call reads the same doc and fails again. A single corrupted row, or a row saved under an older schema shape, therefore makes every /api/remote call fail until someone deletes the SQLite rows by hand. Skip invalid docs and delete them instead of rejecting the whole account.

Discovered and restored conversations cannot take follow-ups on reasoning models.

discover() creates views from { conversationID, title, modelSlug } and sets no effort. After history() settles the record, prompt() builds HostTurn with effort: record.view.effort, which is undefined. In packages/desktop/src/remote-chat.ts, execute then runs if ((model.reasoning === true) !== (ledger.input.effort !== undefined)) throw invalid();. For a reasoning model this refuses every follow-up before the request is sent.

This is a realistic case. The connection docs record that the Cloud models are reasoning-capable. The desktop already skips the stored-effort comparison for account bindings (line 441), so the intent is to allow these follow-ups.

The backend keeps the stored effort for ordinary follow-ups. Relax the execute check to apply only to new conversations, or carry an effort value from discovery.

Proposed fix (in packages/desktop/src/remote-chat.ts, `execute`)
-        if ((model.reasoning === true) !== (ledger.input.effort !== undefined)) throw invalid();
+ // Follow-ups on an existing conversation inherit the backend-stored effort.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Any refresh failure, including a network outage, permanently deletes the saved device pair.

The catch in #refresh handles every error the same way: the 10-second timeout, DNS or connection failures, a 5xx response, and a malformed body. It invalidates the identity and calls this.#store() with no value, which deletes remote-session.

Two common paths reach this:

  • restore runs at boot. If the user launches the app offline, the stored credentials are erased and the user must repeat device sign-in.
  • The SDK fetch wrapper (line 406) refreshes on expiry. A short outage during that refresh logs the user out and erases the pair.

The documented contract covers "Failed/revoked refresh". A transport error is not a refusal by the server. Delete stored credentials only when the server refuses the refresh (400/401/403) or /v1/me reports a different owner. For transport and 5xx failures, keep the pair and throw provider_error so a later attempt can succeed.

Proposed direction

+        if (response.status !== 200) throw new CortexError("provider_error", "Remote refresh is unavailable");

+      } catch (error) {
+        if (!(error instanceof RefreshRefused) && !(error instanceof IdentityChanged)) throw new CortexError("provider_error", "Remote refresh is unavailable");

bindCode returns undefined for email-code and local sign-ins.

identity.code is set only in #promote. Device polling and restore use #promote. The email-code, verify-email, MFA and local-login success path (lines 349-361) builds candidate.chat itself and never builds candidate.code. For those sessions bindCode returns this.#active!.code!, which is undefined.

CodeService.binding() then calls owner.signal.throwIfAborted() on undefined and throws a TypeError. Every /api/code/* call fails with an internal error. CodeConnection still shows the remote Code home whenever signedIn is true, so email-signed-in users see a Code screen that cannot load.

Build the Code binding on the shared success path. Better, route that path through #promote so the Chat and Code bindings cannot drift apart again.

Cleanup in finally can mask the original test failure.

If app.evaluate throws here, app.close() never runs, and the Electron process leaks. This can happen when the app has already crashed. The thrown error also replaces the original assertion failure. Wrap the release call in its own try/catch so app.close() always runs.
