What changed

Fix two concrete postmerge security findings from the rewrite coverage audit.
Static cortex://app paths now use component-boundary containment instead of a
string prefix; file URLs use native URL encoding. Computer-input actions always
ask even when configured/saved wildcard rules allow them; explicit deny still wins.

How to try it

Run bun run build, then the Electron chrome suite. Encoded sibling/parent
traversal receives 403 while index.html loads. Run the core computer-use tests:
default, agent and saved allows cannot bypass input approval; observation remains
unchanged and an explicit deny still refuses.

Honest states

No new UI states or copy. Existing permission prompts and denial responses enforce
the already documented contract. No new authority or persistent approval is added.

Verification

Local: 362 unit tests pass, one existing optional skip; types, lint, i18n and build
pass. Four real Electron chrome tests pass, including encoded traversal rejection.
Independent reviewer reproduced 46 relevant core tests and four Electron cases,
approving both corrections. Hosted cross-platform CI remains pending.

Risk and rollback

Minimal four-file correction on main 0898cbf. No symlink-confinement claim; this fixes
the reproduced encoded lexical traversal. Reverting reintroduces known HIGH findings.
Signed staging/live account acceptance remains separate. Coordinator owns merge.

  • Rules read. I read AGENTS.md and the relevant files in .rules/ before writing code, and this change follows them.
  • Error copy is product language. No new user-facing copy; existing denial contracts preserved. (.rules/02-errors.md)
  • Responsive and themed. No layout changes; exhaustive visual checks do not apply. (.rules/03-responsive.md)
  • Security holds. No secrets in diff, renderer boundary unchanged, local mode remains account-free. Both reported bypasses have targeted regressions. (.rules/01-security.md)
  • Docs updated in this PR. No new surface, route, environment, configuration or error copy; existing documented containment/always-ask contracts are restored. (.rules/05-documentation.md)
  • I verified this carefully. Local checks and real Electron boundary tests above pass; assertions were not weakened. Hosted Windows/macOS validation is pending.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Computer input requests now prompt for permission even when an allow rule or saved approval exists. Configured deny rules still take precedence, while allow rules continue to apply to screenshots and other tools.
    • Requests attempting to access app files through encoded parent-directory or sibling paths are now blocked. The app continues to serve its normal entry page, and valid app file requests remain available.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The changes update computer-use permission precedence, reject renderer protocol paths outside the renderer directory, and add startup diagnostics used by restart tests.

Changes

Computer-use permissions

Layer / File(s) Summary
Computer-use permission precedence
packages/core/src/permission.ts, packages/core/test/computer-use.test.ts
Configured and saved allow rules no longer bypass prompts for computer-use input requests. Configured deny rules retain precedence. Tests cover these cases and verify that allow rules still apply to screenshot and non-computer-use tools.

Renderer protocol paths

Layer / File(s) Summary
Renderer path validation
packages/desktop/src/main.ts, tests/e2e/chrome.spec.ts
The cortex protocol handler rejects paths that escape rendererDir or resolve to an absolute relative path. Allowed paths use pathToFileURL. The end-to-end test checks that the app index returns 200 and encoded sibling and parent traversal requests return 403.

Desktop startup checks

Layer / File(s) Summary
Startup stage diagnostics
packages/desktop/src/main.ts
In test mode, startup stages and selected error names are recorded. Startup failures record an allowlisted error name or UnknownError before being rethrown.
Startup and restart test diagnostics
tests/e2e/fixtures.ts, tests/e2e/work-activity.spec.ts
Startup failures capture stderr and renderer errors, attach window diagnostics, and attempt bounded cleanup before rethrowing. The restart test captures child-process exit details and asserts that the boot receipt reports the ready stage.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 2da8f

The changes tighten permission and renderer-path checks and improve restart diagnostics; no actionable merge-blocking risk remains in the reviewed context.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2da8f

The changes narrow file access and strengthen computer-input approval without adding privileges. No introduced security bypass was established. Cross-platform behavior and complete cancellation handling remain insufficiently verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The affected sensitive outcomes are file reads performed with desktop main-process authority and computer actions performed with the enabled driver's authority. The inspected changes constrain those existing paths rather than granting a new identity, credential, or service privilege.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Effective configured denial is evaluated before any allow or prompt path. Classified computer inputs create an individually identified pending request despite configured or saved allows. An input “always” reply settles that request without persisting approval or bulk-approving matching pending requests.
  • observed — The new boot snapshot is attached to main-process global state only when the app is unpackaged and the test-provider environment setting is present. The shown code adds no renderer bridge for that snapshot. Test fixtures separately capture raw stderr and renderer errors into test diagnostics.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Settlement removes a pending permission before resolving or rejecting it; rejection also settles other pending requests belonging to the same session. Abort events registered after request creation reject that request. However, ask does not check whether its signal was already aborted, so these excerpts alone do not establish complete cancellation and recovery guarantees.
