Value-assignment tests now assert their comparisons, and new-store tests inspect the file they actually create. Per-test temporary directories clean up every fixture, including files used by round-trip and commit tests.

Validation: 22 tests pass.

Stack position 2 of 9. Depends on #14; this PR targets codex/modernize-ci-packaging so its diff contains only this fix. Addresses review finding 10.
