📝 Restructure docs for a faster first success - #693
Legacy docs removed: documentation-v0.8.8.md (repo root) and docs/migrate-to-v0.10.mdx, both for versions that are years old. /migrate-to-v0.10 now redirects to /installation, and every other page path is unchanged.
Pages
introduction: rewritten as a landing page. It has a one-line pitch, a 30-second example (Compose and suspend API), "What you can build" cards, a platforms row, a modules table, next steps, and a compact production showcase. An MDX comment marks where the live web demo embed will go.
quickstart: cut from about 300 lines to 5 steps: add the dependency, per-platform init (tabs), pick, read, save. The longer API tour moved into "Where to go next" cards.
installation: a "choose your modules" table, dependency tabs that reuse the existing version snippets (so it has no hardcoded versions), the exact published Kotlin targets, and a per-platform setup table.
platform-support (new): feature × platform matrix for core, dialogs, Compose and Coil. It was built from the expect/actual implementations and source sets, and its notes explain each partial (⚠️) entry.
ai-assistants (new): the hosted MCP server (https://filekit.mintlify.app/mcp, verified live) with Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code setup; llms.txt / llms-full.txt; .md page export; and a ready-to-paste AGENTS.md / CLAUDE.md section.
showcase (new): the "Who's using FileKit" list, moved out of the intro.
docs.json: enables the contextual menu (copy, view as Markdown, ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, MCP URL, Cursor, VS Code) and adds a site description, which Mintlify uses as the llms.txt summary.
One template on every page: a <Platforms> badge row (new snippets/platforms.jsx, linked to the matrix), usage (Compose / Suspend API tabs), options as Mintlify ResponseFields (nested settings in Expandable), task sections, a platform notes table, related links. At most 3 callouts per page, and no more <Check> or <Info>.
One shared result line (snippets/dialog-result.mdx). Cancellation and compatibility-overload details now live only on "Results and errors" (dialogs/error-handling).
New pages: core/file-operations (list, walk, copy, move, delete) and core/web (picked files, FileKit.download, OPFS).
Factual fixes:
filekit-dialogs ships its own Android FileProvider, so files in filesDir/cacheDir need no setup for camera, share and open.
Windows native (mingwX64, core and dialogs) and watchOS (core only) are published targets, but the docs never mentioned them. Added them to the setup pages, the directory docs, and the per-page support lines.
iosX64 and macosX64 are not published; the old installation page listed them.
FileKitCameraType.Video does not exist yet, but the camera page listed it as a value.
On iOS, title and canCreateDirectories are accepted but ignored. This is now documented, along with the Linux and Windows native title setting.
macOS native filesDir / cacheDir use the bundle identifier and need no init. The docs said they needed an app ID.
Image utils on JS/Wasm were described as a "no-op", but the APIs are not declared for web at all. compressImage throws on Linux native, Windows native and watchOS.
Linux native dialogs use the generic XDG Desktop Portal, not only the GNOME backend.
Fixed a broken code fence in core/file-utils.
Possible library follow-ups, not changed here: the web PlatformFileSerializer throws on JS too, although its message mentions only Wasm JS. FileKitFileSaverWithoutBytesException is unused. JVM openFileWithDefaultApplication doesn't check Desktop.isDesktopSupported().
Affected platforms
Docs only. No library code changes.
Validation
mint validate: passed
mint broken-links: no broken links
mint dev: all new and rewritten pages render, including code blocks inside Steps and Tabs.
Left for review: the visual read-through on the Mintlify preview deployment.
Follow-ups
README.md still links to the 0.10 migration guide (line 66). The redirect keeps the link working, but the line should be dropped in the README refresh.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
This PR restructures FileKit documentation across installation, platform support, Core APIs, dialogs, integrations, and cookbooks. It adds assistant and platform-support guides, introduces shared platform badges, updates site navigation, and removes the v0.10 migration page and two older snippets.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "📝 Restructure docs for a faster first success" matches the main change. The PR restructures the FileKit documentation: it reorganizes navigation, rewrites the introduction and quickstart, adds platform-support and AI-assistant pages, and revises the feature pages. The title contains an emoji, which the title guidance says to avoid, and "faster first success" is slightly less specific than naming the docs scope. These are minor issues and do not change the assessment.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's main sections in substance. It gives a clear What and why summary covering the docs refresh, and it lists the information architecture and page-level changes. The Affected platforms section is filled in, with the author stating that the change is docs only and touches no library code. The Validation section lists the commands the author ran: mint validate, mint broken-links, and mint dev. The template's Closes # issue link is not filled in, and the Checklist is not ticked. The description also omits the template's item-by-item checklist (tests, ktlint, docs, sample app, screenshots), so it is not fully complete against the template. The description is detailed and mostly complete, so it passes. The missing Closes reference and unchecked checklist should be addressed before merge.
Full details: Docstring Coverage
Explanation
No eligible functions found in the changed files. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 0 functions across 1 files. Include Windows native in the initialization guidance
If a project targets mingwX64 and copies these instructions, its agent is told to initialize only JVM desktop and Linux native. Accessing Windows FileKit.filesDir or cacheDir without FileKit.init(appId) throws because the Windows implementation requires the app ID; include Windows native in this setup list.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Document the web serializer's runtime failure
When a JS or Wasm app serializes or deserializes PlatformFile, the web serializer is present but both operations throw at runtime (filekit-core/src/webMain/kotlin/io/github/vinceglb/filekit/PlatformFileSerializer.wasmJs.kt). This row has no explanatory note, unlike the other runtime-unsupported entries, so the matrix's ❌ and preceding tip can leave users expecting a compile-time failure instead of a runtime exception; call out that behavior.
import VersionDialogs from '/snippets/version-dialogs.mdx'

Scope modules to the targets they support
In a KMP project that declares watchOS, following this instruction for filekit-dialogs or filekit-dialogs-compose puts an artifact without a watchOS target in commonMain, which is compiled for every declared target and cannot resolve that target's variant. The table below says watchOS is core-only, but does not qualify the unconditional dependency instruction; direct users to source sets shared only by supported targets. Kotlin's dependency guidance
Every target uses the platform's native dialogs. Some features are platform-specific: the camera and share sheet are mobile-only, the file saver is not available in browsers, and Compose and Coil support follows Compose Multiplatform's targets. See the [platform support matrix](/platform-support) for a feature-by-feature breakdown.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Qualify dialog availability by target
The platform table includes watchOS as “Core only,” but filekit-dialogs has no watchOS target, so this sentence promises native dialogs on a target where FileKit cannot provide them. Qualify the claim to dialog-supported targets.

FileKit needs to have access to the `ActivityResultRegistry` to handle the result of the file picker dialog. To do this, you need to add the following code to your `MainActivity`:
Only Android needs an init step for dialogs, and only when you use `filekit-dialogs` without Compose. Register your activity so FileKit can reach its `ActivityResultRegistry`:
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Require Android initialization for suspend dialogs too
When an Android app includes filekit-dialogs-compose but calls FileKit.openFilePicker() or another suspend dialog API without creating a remember…Launcher, the registry is still uninitialized: only the Compose launcher setup calls FileKit.init(registry), while the suspend API accesses FileKit.registry and fails. Scope this exemption to Compose launcher calls and retain FileKit.init(activity) guidance for suspend callers.
Clarify the web capabilities in the site description.
The description says JS and Wasm provide native dialogs for picking, saving, reading, and writing files. At this revision, the web file saver is unavailable, FileKit.download is the web alternative, and picked web files are read-only outside OPFS. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Update this text to distinguish native dialogs from browser APIs. This prevents the site and llms.txt summaries from promising unsupported web behavior.

Summary
Docs refresh focused on content and developer experience. Visual styling (colors, logo, hero) is unchanged.
Information architecture (
docs/docs.json)documentation-v0.8.8.md(repo root) anddocs/migrate-to-v0.10.mdx, both for versions that are years old./migrate-to-v0.10now redirects to/installation, and every other page path is unchanged.Pages
introduction: rewritten as a landing page. It has a one-line pitch, a 30-second example (Compose and suspend API), "What you can build" cards, a platforms row, a modules table, next steps, and a compact production showcase. An MDX comment marks where the live web demo embed will go.quickstart: cut from about 300 lines to 5 steps: add the dependency, per-platform init (tabs), pick, read, save. The longer API tour moved into "Where to go next" cards.installation: a "choose your modules" table, dependency tabs that reuse the existing version snippets (so it has no hardcoded versions), the exact published Kotlin targets, and a per-platform setup table.platform-support(new): feature × platform matrix for core, dialogs, Compose and Coil. It was built from the expect/actual implementations and source sets, and its notes explain each partial (ai-assistants(new): the hosted MCP server (https://filekit.mintlify.app/mcp, verified live) with Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code setup;llms.txt/llms-full.txt;.mdpage export; and a ready-to-pasteAGENTS.md/CLAUDE.mdsection.showcase(new): the "Who's using FileKit" list, moved out of the intro.docs.json: enables the contextual menu (copy, view as Markdown, ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, MCP URL, Cursor, VS Code) and adds a sitedescription, which Mintlify uses as thellms.txtsummary.Feature pages rewrite (core, dialogs, integrations, cookbook)
<Platforms>badge row (newsnippets/platforms.jsx, linked to the matrix), usage (Compose/Suspend APItabs), options as MintlifyResponseFields (nested settings inExpandable), task sections, a platform notes table, related links. At most 3 callouts per page, and no more<Check>or<Info>.snippets/dialog-result.mdx). Cancellation and compatibility-overload details now live only on "Results and errors" (dialogs/error-handling).core/file-operations(list, walk, copy, move, delete) andcore/web(picked files,FileKit.download, OPFS).filekit-dialogsships its own Android FileProvider, so files infilesDir/cacheDirneed no setup for camera, share and open.databasesDiris not created on JVM/Linux/Windows.DCIM/<app>.writeUtf8→writeString, DataStoretoPath), suspend calls outside coroutines, missing imports.live-demopage (from 🚀 Fix web sample deploy and embed live demos in docs #694) sits right after the introduction. The intro and quickstart link to it ("Try it in your browser"), and thefile-pickerembed is kept.Fixes found while building the matrix
mingwX64, core and dialogs) and watchOS (core only) are published targets, but the docs never mentioned them. Added them to the setup pages, the directory docs, and the per-page support lines.iosX64andmacosX64are not published; the old installation page listed them.FileKitCameraType.Videodoes not exist yet, but the camera page listed it as a value.titleandcanCreateDirectoriesare accepted but ignored. This is now documented, along with the Linux and Windows nativetitlesetting.filesDir/cacheDiruse the bundle identifier and need noinit. The docs said they needed an app ID.compressImagethrows on Linux native, Windows native and watchOS.core/file-utils.Possible library follow-ups, not changed here: the web
PlatformFileSerializerthrows on JS too, although its message mentions only Wasm JS.FileKitFileSaverWithoutBytesExceptionis unused. JVMopenFileWithDefaultApplicationdoesn't checkDesktop.isDesktopSupported().Affected platforms
Docs only. No library code changes.
Validation
mint validate: passedmint broken-links: no broken linksmint dev: all new and rewritten pages render, including code blocks inside Steps and Tabs.Left for review: the visual read-through on the Mintlify preview deployment.
Follow-ups
README.mdstill links to the 0.10 migration guide (line 66). The redirect keeps the link working, but the line should be dropped in the README refresh.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
