No sound on Huawei Matebook 14 (2021) - even on Linux 6.2 #4305
I've had the Huawei Matebook 14 since it came out in 2021 (Intel i7-1165G7, 16Gb RAM, 1Tb SSD). On Ubuntu it has never had sound (though it does in Windows), and I've been tracking the promising SOF progress with the ESSX-8336 and was hopeful it would finally be sorted when 23.04 came out and we finally went past Linux 5.19 to Linux 6.2 (specifically: 6.2.0-20).
All efforts on this codec have stalled. I personally stopped trying to help.
Unless you have the skills and ability to figure out how the GPIOs work on this device and what ALSA controls need to be set the odds are really small to get a solution the near future.
So near, but so far ... such a pity because it has gone from no sound card to at least seeing it and not having any errors reported on dmesg. Well done on all you did so far. Just sad it can't be 'pushed over the line' now. But I know it needs time and the hardware available to those doing the work - none of which is possible.
Try to run this:
With latest upstream kernel, i have 6.2.11 from sources (it works from 6.0 kernel btw)
Looks like alsa-lib config is broken, so speakers and etc is turned off by default.
#!/usr/bin/env sh
amixer cset name='Headphone Switch' on
amixer cset name='Speaker Switch' on
amixer cset name='Headphone Playback Volume' 10,10
amixer cset name='Right Headphone Mixer Right DAC Switch' on
amixer cset name='Left Headphone Mixer Left DAC Switch' on
amixer cset name='DAC Playback Volume' 999,999
amixer cset name='Headphone Mixer Volume' 999,999
amixer sset "Dmic0" 70
amixer sset "Dmic1 2nd" 70
It will break your microjack sound until you reboot
I added it into sysmted service...
Notice, if you are using pipewire, you have to turn off the also hooks. Or change the script, but i don't know how to fix it.
Sadly a problem in Ubuntu 23.04 Pipewire is the default sound system. [Possibly] As a result we get the error:
amixer: Cannot find the given element from control default
for each cset operation.
Investigating in alsa-info --with-amixer I cannot see those names, but there are variants of them. However, when using the variants I get the same error.
Using alsamixer I cannot change the Speaker volume off zero.
@AlwynBarry
Try to remove/disable alsa pipewire bridge. amixer: Cannot find the given element from control default because amixer tries to communicate with pipewire server. It should directly communicate with alsa subsystem. OR you can change commands to use alsa-devices directly from pipewire
(I don't know how to, but it is possible)
Also try to run linux without pipewire idk
Also turn on the pro audio profile
I use NixOS and I also had the same problem. I fixed it by disabling alsa bridge:
@tshipenchko Which file for that setting to disable the alsa bridge? It's not in the format of pipewire.conf and don't recognise which file it may be from. I think it's probably in your configurations.nix file, which I don't have in Ubuntu.
Re. pro audio profile, I've checked but don't have the option to turn on the pro audio profile within pavucontrol.
@AlwynBarry Yes. It's configuration.nix file, which is specific for my linux distro.
You should find out how to disable alsa bridge in Ubuntu. It looks like you should remove some config files of alsa OR a special package like pipewire-alsa. Please, create backups of your configs anyway
Also, it is really strange that you don't have pro audio profile at all. Do you see Dummy Audio in pavucontrol or normal audio device like: Tiger Lake-LP Smart Sound Technology. IDK :c
I hope you will fix your problem. Also, you can try NixOS as it has fully reproducible configuration (p.s. I also use the latest kernel from sources, as SOF patches are merged into it)
Huawei matebook 14 2021 amd 5500U - also sound is not available.
I've tried to used custom kernel with patch for es8336 sound device (https://github.com/codepayne/linux-sound-huawei), but it's don't solve this problem.... (
@tshipenchko Thanks for your help. I can't try NixOS because my laptop is for 'normal use' rather than development or trialing distros - although you can roll back NixOS it's not the kind of stability I need. I tried NixOS on VM, and may put a live USB install to see if I can get sound working there!
Re. other issues - Tiger Lake identified in the sound (output) ... still no Mic identified. Better than it was ... until 5.19 I only had Dummy Output. I agree - it makes no sense why a pro profile shouldn't be offered!
@tshipenchko PS ... I have tried all Quirk variations ... no joy, apart from using Bit 4 (of 8) 'SOF_ES8336_SPEAKERS_EN_GPIO1_QUIRK' always returns it to Dummy Output, and Bit 7 (of 8) does invert from the main speaker to the headphone, though still no sound even on the headphones.
@AlwynBarry where did read about 'SOF_ES8336_SPEAKERS_EN_GPIO1_QUIRK'?
I have sound and mic but with a lot of issues...
Btw, I think topologies and alsa-conf is wrong, so mic is determining with problem. In default profiles, I don't have mic or it doesn't works. In pro audio I have 2 micros (left and right ones) and they are working okay, but separated..
So.. Just good luck 🍀
If you have opportunity to change laptop, I think you should do it. Huawei doesn't support Linux at normal level. I also heard that they intentionally don't use standard ways to connect audio card and etc.
I don't have opportunity to change laptop and I'm so sad.
Re. laptop - yeah, but it's an amazing laptop for the price. I can still 'regress' to Windows to do sound-related things (Zoom, Video edits, etc) and can listen and record on Linux via Bluetooth (albeit with slight a sound delay - not useful for Video edits!). Just a pity so many with the es8336 have to struggle. But I know it's not the Linux community's fault - drivers should have been made available by the manufacturers, whether laptop integrators or the sound chip manufacturer.

I have the model klvd-wdh9 and use Fedora, no sound and not luck searching for a solution, if you find some day, even years later, a workaround please don't forget to posted here
There are sound now in Fedora 39 + Kernel 6.6 but is far from perfect, when you connect a 3.5 jack earphones it is still sound with the speakers, the sound from the speakers is so weak that you barely heard it and there is no HDMI/Display port out sound.
@german-rios-gonzalez same on nixos 23.11
When plug 3.5 jack, there is still sound from the speaker
It could be because in d14 soundcard uses 2nd GPIO for headphone
Some quirks may fix it, but not sure. I tried quirks from d15 model, but didn't work properly. Maybe the driver needs modifications.
But my speaker sound is about to be okay. Also if I turn on the Pro Audio mode, I could get higher volume using amixer commands
Didn't checked HDMI/Display port sound (edit: work good)
Also internal mic works nice after merge of changes to alsa-ucm config's upstream
amixer -D hw:0 cset name='Right Headphone Mixer Right DAC Switch' on
amixer -D hw:0 cset name='Left Headphone Mixer Left DAC Switch' on
After upgrading my NixOS to 24.11, my workaround for sound stopped working.
The issue arises because I use PipeWire, and the option to disable ALSA bypass over PipeWire was removed in NixOS. Consequently, the initial script could no longer access the actual hardware sound card:
amixer cset name='Right Headphone Mixer Right DAC Switch' on
amixer cset name='Left Headphone Mixer Left DAC Switch' on
To resolve this, I added the -D hw:0 parameter, and my workaround is now functional again:
amixer -D hw:0 cset name='Right Headphone Mixer Right DAC Switch' on
amixer -D hw:0 cset name='Left Headphone Mixer Left DAC Switch' on
About my device:
OS: NixOS 24.11.20241230.3ffbbdb (Vicuna) x86_64
Kernel: 6.12.7
Host: HUAWEI NBD-WXX9-PCB-B4

@tshipenchko, can you control and correct the audio routing via alsamixer -c0? If so then this looks like UCM issue.
If not than it is a routing issue within the codec (the audio is routed to wrong pins).
I'm not that familiar with the ES8336, but it looks to be quite widespread source of issues. I'll try to look at the code and see if I can find some way to debug and fix it.
Hi,Yes it is, thanks!!Alwyn—Sent from mobileOn 4 Mar 2025, at 14:24, Péter Ujfalusi ***@***.***> wrote:

BTW, it's worth updating https://thesofproject.github.io/latest/getting_started/intel_debug/suggestions.html
... At present it points to your GitHub to solve ES8336 problems. But if you're not working on them any more then this SOF page shouldn't point here.

merura commentedon Mar 4, 2025
Only partly. Currently, I cannot use the headphones.
When I connect my headphones over the 3.5mm jack, the sound plays from the left headphones' speaker and the right laptop's speaker
I think there might be some problem with managing the switcher on soundcard

I don't know so much about audio routing, but I will try. At least, I can configure the sound card with alsamixer. Thanks for your efforts!
