How do I install SOF under Ubuntu 18.04 LTS? #1877
This not a bug, but rather a feature request (maybe for docs). I have Dell Inspiron 7590 which has no microphone working when a fresh Ubuntu is installed (the 3.5mm jack does not work as well). ArchLinux -https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dell_Inspiron_15_(7590) says it works with the newest sof firmware, but how do I install it under Ubuntu?
I hope not every new Dell user has to clone this repo and clone it in order to get the mic working, but it would be much easier to install it via ppa or a .deb file. Thanks in advance, in case somebody decides to help me out here!
@katsar0v I assume you meant you have Ubuntu 19.10 with its v5.3 kernel, yes?
In that case you should only need firmware and topology files. If I am correct, would you be willing to test some of our install procedures, we are still in need of downstream beta testers.
ok, so the driver is already loaded and the card created.
IIRC with older solutions based on the 1.3 firmware we had a very low gain for the dmic, and it was barely usable.
can you play with alsamixer and boot the gains for PGA10.0 and PGA11.0 by 20dB?
This is what my alsamixer shows. When I visit a voice recorder online, it records the taps on my laptop.
Edit: 3.5mm headphones work now, just mic does not
Edit 2: choosing "Stereo Output + Multichannel Input" allows Chrome to record sound. Choosing "Stereo Output + Stereo Input" gives me no microphone error in Chrome and other apps.
I also noticed that when I set "headset mic boost" to the max I can record the taps on the laptop, otherwise mic is silent:
forget PulseAudio, can you test with
arecord -Dhw:0,6 -c2 -r48000 -f S32_LE -d 10 mytest.wav
if this doesn't work try with -c4 and S24_LE, I don't recall the options
and input this into audacity
Damn this worked! mytest.wav recorded my voice. Should I upload the file? I am not sure what to do with it in audacity
I meant look at the waveform, but if you can hear your voice then that's fine.
So what I think is happening is that your UCM file is wrong.
That should be in /usr/share/alsa/ucm/sof-hda something.

Can you attach the HiFi.conf it here?
The quality from the .wav is really good, I don't think audacity is needed. Here is a screenshot as I could not find sof-hda something:
Edit thesofproject/sof#2: just so that you know where I have HiFi.conf (no idea what this file is):
ok, so you don't have a UCM file, that explains why things are broken.
I will have to include @juimonen on this one. Jaska, do you know where we can find a UCM file with hdaudio + mic support that would work with the 5.3 kernel, 1.3 firmware and Ubuntu 18.04 LTS?
@katsar0v please be patient until Monday, it's the week-end already in most parts of the world :-)
I haven't test the newer kernel patches for 5.3.0 after *-42, but maybe you can do it, while you playing around.
For anyone stuck in 18.04/19.x for reason another, the 5.3.0 kernel problem was fixed in Ubuntu-5.3.0-43.36 kernel (see #1877 (comment)). So stay at -40, update to -43.36, or upgrade distro to 20.04 -- all should work.
@kv2019i yes. that alsa-info was with that driver enabled, and working sound.
I still can't get this to work with. With 20.4 I get the following:
without any modifications in alsa-base.conf I have sound (Analog stereo according to Ubuntu settings), but no mic is detected
with
options snd-hda-intel dmic_detect=0
options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=laptop-dmic
I get more options for sound (4 channels, 2 channels, stereo) in Ubuntu settings and it reports that I have "rear mic built-in". There's sound, and it seems like the mic notices something, but it doesn't work with arecord.
With
blacklist snd-hda-intel
blacklist snd-soc-skl
I have no sound, and only "Dummy output" in Ubuntu settings. Alsamixer reports no soundcard.

It could be the dmic detection from ACPI tables is not working on your machine. Another possibility is that your machine simply doesn't have a PCH digital mic, but rather the microphone is connected to the HDA codec and there is some problem with the ALC285 codec driver that prevents your mic from working. I.e. you don't need SOF, but need a fix to the Realtek codec driver. I can't say for sure which is the case based on current logs.
No new feedback in last two weeks and 20.04LTS has been out for some weeks as well now, so I think we have no need for this issue anymore. Thanks for all contributors!
So in order to make it work with 20.04 + Hybrid-nvidia(Inspiron 7590) we need:
* Blacklist snd-hda-intel and snd-soc-skl
This is not needed.
* Custom alsa-ucm-conf files in /usr/share/alsa/ucm/
This will come to Ubuntu (and other distros) via upgrade of alsa-lib. The fix is already merged upstream.
* Update fw to v1.5 via some method that I have to find out...
The FW will be updated to Feroda and Ubuntu via normal channels. We are planning to release a 1.4.3 version with the same fix. Sof-bin repository contains instructions how to update the FW manually, but this is primarily intended and distribution packagers.
I'm sorry for bumping this year old thread, but I just installed 20.04 LTS in the same laptop Inspiron 7590, with hybrid graphics. The previous comment by @kv2019i suggests that it should already be fixed, yet it still did not work out of the box.
By default snd-hda-intel is used, and I have Dummy Out put as speaker. With detect_dmic=0 I can get speakers, but no microphone of course.
By blacklisting snd-hda-intel and snd-soc-skl and removing detect_dmic=0, I got sof-audio-pci as kernel driver in used. The first reboot seem to get me both speakers and mic, but after letting the laptop idle and went to suspend, it did not suspend successfully and froze with black screen (I suspect kernel panic). After a forced reboot I got back Dummy Output while kernel driver is still snd-audio-pci.

Edit: aplay -l and arecord -l says no soundcard found. And on some reboots it will not boot at all, stucking at Ubuntu loading screen (before login screen)
@imjuzcy can you try to add this file as /etc/modprobe.d/sof-dyndgb.conf sof-dyndbg.conf.txt
reboot and attach the dmesg logs (not paste).
It's very odd that you would have such a topology issue, this may point to an install problem or a topology/firmware that isn't backwards-compatible with kernel 5.10 - which isn't good at all.
@imjuzcy In addition to providing the logs, could you also try with a 21.04 live image? Did you upgrade to 20.04LTS in place? Based on the dmesg, SOF should be chosen even without any blacklisting, so something's not quite right in the installation. Ubuntu still ships 1.6 SOF by default, did you first try with this? The errors are not about i915/hybrid, so this is potentially a new issue. Let's try to figure out whether it's something related to your hw, or sw-config issue.

@plbossart I rolled back to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS but have
5.3.0-40-generic(fromuname -r)I tried building from scratch - https://thesofproject.github.io/latest/getting_started/build-guide/build-from-scratch.html but it is really complicated and I would like something more simpler.
As for beta testers - I can do this, as long as I don't have to re-install my whole Ubuntu on a daily basis, it is fine for me
I have also read that the kernels from 5.2+ also support SOF, but am not sure what that means. (link)
plbossart commentedon Mar 6, 2020
ok, let's try to help, one step at a time.
Step1: make sure the SOF driver is selected:
with 5.3, you need to do this:
gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
add
blacklist snd-hda-intel
blacklist snd-soc-skl
reboot and share the alsa-info.sh link

pavucontrol:(seems like a white noise, but when I tap on the laptop, it goes up, so the mic kind of works, but does not react on my voice)

alsa-ucm-conf$ git checkout 3a2d80ecb74ee4cd02449873ece0407c7da0da4e
sof-hda-dsp.tar.gz
copy this to /usr/share/alsa/ucm and reboot, you should see the dmics. There might be a dependency on alsa-lib though
