Markdown is a markup language (link to diff bet. programming language and markup language).
- Developed by daringfireball crew
Goal/purpose: make it easy to write formatted text
- Display of text, not full-fledged webpages
- Make it simple to present information
Simple format
- Very low barrier to entry
- Readable as-is in plain text
Limited feature set
- bold/italic/underline, headers, tables, etc.
.md files are parsed & turn into HTML (link)
- Viewable on any browser
- Possible to turn them into other things as well (LaTeX (link)), but not common
