Write page: Etiquette > Where to ask questions #14
IRC channels for a project on which you're working
Mailing lists for the same
This is really going to vary by project. Not all projects have this. The best place to start is: the project's contributing page. Some projects will have a special IRC channel for newbies. Others will have special projects and listerservs for new people. So always check the project's documentation.
It really varies a lot. Unfortunately, there's no hard-and-fast answers to this. If you have better tips, please share here (link to "how to contribute").
+1 @TardisPackrat it seems that the more abstract question that would be better to answer is 'how to find out where to ask for help in your project' possibly with a vague flow chart.
