Minimum macos system requirement for 3.14.0rc1? #137749

Closed

Description

@pascal-at-tef

Documentation

The release page for 3.14.0rc1 states a minimum macos version of "macOS 10.13 and later".

Installation of 3.14.0rc1 on macOS 10.13 fails for me. The installer itself states a minimum of macOS 11.

Is macOS 11 to be the new minimum version? If so, the release page seems to need updating.

Many thanks!

The documentation also has the claim.

See #131751 (review) for the context on macOS 11+ requirement, sounds like maybe 10.15 will be the new requirement.

Yes, looks like it, the binary has minos: 11.0:

    ❯ /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/3.14/bin/python3.14 --version --version
    Python 3.14.0rc1 (v3.14.0rc1:48f88310044, Jul 22 2025, 13:06:29) [Clang 16.0.0 (clang-1600.0.26.6)]

    ❯ otool -l /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/3.14/bin/python3.14
    ...
    /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/3.14/bin/python3.14 (architecture x86_64):
    Load command 10
          cmd LC_BUILD_VERSION
      cmdsize 32
     platform 1
        minos 11.0
          sdk 15.5
       ntools 1
         tool 3
      version 1115.7.3
    ...

    cc @ned-deily for confirmation.

The min version was reduced to 10.15 in #137211, so we'll use that for 3.14.0 rc2.

See comments in python/release-tools#269: some 3.12 download pages have the wrong macOS version listed. We can check the 3.12 and 3.14 binaries and update the descriptions in the tables.

Just for additional context, the minimum version was also discussed in

The change to the JIT just mirrors that.

Looks like only 3.12.8, 3.12.9, & 3.12.10 need their download table updated to say macOS 10.13 instead of macOS 10.9, after running otool -l /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/3.12/bin/python3.12 | grep -A3 -E "LC_VERSION_MIN_MACOSX|minos" on the 3.12.x binaries.

    Looks like only 3.12.8, 3.12.9, & 3.12.10

Thanks, I've updated these to read "for macOS 10.13 and later":

And updated 3.14 rc1 to read "for macOS 11 and later":

And we have 3.14 rc2 with "for macOS 10.15 and later" which will also be used for the foreseeable 3.14s:

I think we're good here now, thanks all!
