Proposal:

As noted in the deprecation notes:

This function is only useful for Jython support, has a confusing API, and is largely untested.

Has this already been discussed elsewhere?

This is a minor feature, which does not need previous discussion elsewhere

    Ah! I did a GH search but GH didn't pick anything :c I'll close mine and my PR as someone wanted to work on that.
