fix(web): pressing the Usage shortcut again closes Usage - #30459
mod+u opens Usage, but pressing it again while Usage is open does nothing. Since Usage became a modal, the second press resolves usage.open again, navigates to /usage (where you already are), and the modal stays open. The only keyboard way out is Esc.
Repro on main (ef99d3f2), macOS, web dev server: open a thread, press Cmd+U, press Cmd+U again. The modal stays open and the URL stays /usage.
Change
The Usage page's capture-phase shortcut handler already resolves keys with usagePageOpen: true. It now treats usage.open as "close this modal". It closes through the dialog's actionsRef, so it takes the same path as Esc: blur-commit, fade-out, and return to the page that opened it.
onUsageKeyDown(event)
command = resolveUsageShortcut(event, keybindings)
+ if command is "usage.open"+ consume event+ modalActionsRef.close() // same close path as Esc+ return
if command is a metric or period shortcut
select it
AppRouteModal now passes an optional actionsRef through to Base UI's Dialog.Root. Nothing else in that file changes.
Surfaces:
Keybindings. Defaults don't change. A custom binding such as navigation.back when usagePageOpen (from [Bug]: Ctrl+U cannot toggle between Usage and the previous page #21357) still resolves to navigation.back, so this handler ignores it and the existing history handler runs as before. Held keys (event.repeat) and keys typed in inputs or nested dialogs are already filtered out before this point.
Clients. Web and desktop share this code. Mobile has no keyboard shortcuts.
Other entry points. The sidebar button and the command palette's "Open usage" item only open Usage. Settings has no open shortcut, so it isn't affected.
Docs.docs/user/usage.md now says pressing the shortcut again closes Usage.
Scope and approval
This fixes a regression of #21357, which maintainers triaged and closed through #22905. That issue established that one key should toggle Usage open and closed. Since Usage became a modal, the default mod+u is a no-op while Usage is open: a shortcut that opened something does nothing when pressed again. The fix is small and only touches that handler. No default keybindings change.
Verification
Real app: vp run dev with isolated state, macOS, T3's browser panel, real Cmd+U key presses. Usage numbers and one project label are blurred in the recordings.
Before (main)
After (this branch)
Second press: still on /usage, modal open
Second press: modal fades out, back on the thread route
Also checked in the same session: Cmd+U reopens Usage after it closes, and t still switches the metric to Tokens.
vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck (2 packages), the affected browser test file (2 passed), and the React compiler check all pass.
No automated test: this is handler wiring, and nothing renders UsagePage in a test today. Not checked: the packaged desktop app, Ctrl+U on Windows/Linux, and the custom navigation.back toggle binding in the real app. The code path for that binding doesn't change.
Merge Danger
Door: two-way. Reverting the commit restores the old behavior. No data, contract, or default-keybinding changes.
Blast Radius: narrow. Only mod+u (or whatever is bound to usage.open) while the Usage modal is focused.

Usage is now a modal, so the second mod+u resolved usage.open, navigated
to /usage again, and left the modal open. The Usage page's shortcut
handler now closes its modal on usage.open, the same way Esc does.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Pressing the Usage shortcut again now closes the modal through its existing dismissal lifecycle. The change is limited to this UI interaction, preserves shortcut guards, and leaves default bindings and diagnostic-suppression scope unchanged.

AppRouteModal now accepts a dialog actions ref. UsagePage uses it to close Usage when the usage.open shortcut runs. The usage documentation now says to press the shortcut again to close Usage.
pingdotgg/t3code#24847: Introduced AppRouteModal and changed Usage to use it; this PR adds a close path through that modal.
pingdotgg/t3code#10158: Added Usage keyboard navigation and usage.open handling, which this PR extends to close the modal.

Verified unchanged head f4c94187b908744b2b8ea9dc68e3bb4e8139f595 on Linux with the dev web client, repository Playwright, and /usr/bin/google-chrome.
Reproduced on github/main at d51bc58f5e in a separate worktree: Ctrl+U opens Usage; the second Ctrl+U leaves the modal open at /usage.
Stopped main before starting this head. Used isolated state, a project added through the app pointing to a real git repository, and real Codex gpt-6.1-sol turns through the composer on both versions. Both turns completed and rendered their responses. No mocks, fixtures, or demo data.
On this head, the second Ctrl+U closes Usage and returns to the exact originating thread route. Reopening, Escape, the sidebar Usage button, t/c metric shortcuts, Ctrl+Shift+2 for the week, and the held-key repeat guard also work.
vp run check:changed HEAD^ passed through blacksmith-check: format, lint, both knip checks, affected typechecks, the existing modal browser test, and React compiler checks. GitHub CI is green. No source changes or pushes were needed.

Recording: Ctrl+U opens, Ctrl+U closes, Ctrl+U reopens, t selects Tokens, Ctrl+Shift+2 selects the week, and Escape closes. Playback and seeking checked after upload.
Not verified
Packaged desktop, macOS/Windows keyboard behavior, native iOS/Android, custom navigation.back bindings, and remote/tunnel connections were not exercised on this Linux VM. Usage cost/token data renders, but Codex subscription limits could not be validated: main already reports Codex could not read usage (JSON-RPC -32600) through this machine's local proxy. This does not prevent the shortcut flow or real provider turns.
