fix(shared): file links with parentheses in the path keep their parent folder labels - #28644
extractMarkdownLinkHrefs ends a bare link destination at the first ), while the Markdown parser that renders the message allows balanced parentheses. So [a](/repo/app/(a)/page.tsx) is scanned as /repo/app/(a.
The visible result is two identical chips. Parent folder labels are computed from the scanned hrefs, so a message linking app/(a)/page.tsx and app/(b)/page.tsx (Next.js route groups) shows page.tsx and page.tsx, with nothing to tell them apart. The label code already handles same-named files; it just never sees these paths. Thread search indexes the same hrefs, so it misses the folder text as well. The chips still open the right file, because ChatMarkdown resolves the href again at render time.
Change
Bare destinations now follow the same rules as the parser: parentheses have to balance, \(, \) and \\ are escapes, an unbalanced destination is not a link, and nesting stops at 32, which is micromark's linkResourceDestinationBalanceMax.
The scan used to reuse a cached ) position to stay linear (#18387). That cache cannot work once the end depends on where the scan started, so the depth limit does that job now. A scan only runs past another link's ( while that ( adds to its depth, so at most about 33 scans can cover any position.
Destinations with & go through the same parser and Windows path plugin as the renderer, because only the parser knows character references. So C:\repo\.a\x&y\page.tsx keeps \. and becomes x&y, and POSIX a&b decodes too. The helper moved to markdownPipeline.ts to keep markdownLinks.ts free of remark.
Scope and approval
No prior issue. This is a very small fix for an obvious bug: one helper reads the same destination differently from the parser that renders it. It adds no new link types and changes no defaults. The only code change is how extractMarkdownLinkHrefs finds the end of a bare destination.
#5222 was closed because the render time fallback already makes these chips work and its CommonMark pre-parser was too large. This does not bring that back: it replaces one delimiter search with a 20 line function, and it fixes the labels, which the fallback does not reach.
Separate from #28637, which is about which relative paths count as files. This bug already happens with absolute paths on main. Each PR works without the other. #27970 edits nearby lines of this helper but not the destination scan.
Verification
Environment: macOS, Node 26.12.1, main at 8760d06.
cd packages/shared && vp test run src/markdownLinks.test.ts
Before the fix, with the new rows on main: 7 failed, 35 passed. All 7 new rows fail, for example expected [ '/x/app/(a', '/x/app/(b' ] to deeply equal [ '/x/app/(a)/page.tsx', ... ].
After the fix: 42 passed.
Rendered ChatMarkdown in Chromium with a temporary browser test (not committed), using [a](/tmp/project/app/(a)/page.tsx) [b](/tmp/project/app/(b)/page.tsx) and reading the container's text:
Before: a page.tsx b page.tsx
After: a page.tsx · app/(a) b page.tsx · app... (the assertion output cuts off the rest)
searchableMessageSegments on the same two links, with and between them:
Before: a page.tsx and b page.tsx
After: a page.tsx · app/(a) and b page.tsx · app/(b)
Compared against the real parser with a temporary test (not committed): 60,000 random [l](...) inputs weighted toward parentheses and backslashes, comparing against remark-parse and leaving out links with empty destinations.
Before: 19,319 inputs disagreed.
After: 1 disagreed, [l](a\[x](.tsb/)a[x](.ts), an escaped [ in the label. That is label scanning, which this PR does not touch.
remark-parse accepts 32 nested parentheses and rejects 33, matching the new rows.
Scan time, extractMarkdownLinkHrefs on adversarial input, single runs:
It stays linear, doubling with the input, but the worst case costs more than on main because of the bound above. Text that does not repeat an open ]( is not affected, since the scan only starts after one.
Other checks, all passing: vp test run for markdownLinks, threadFindText, composerTrigger, codexFileCitations, codexMarkdownDirectives and markdownPipeline in packages/shared, src/markdown-links.test.ts in apps/web, src/lib/markdownLinks.test.ts in apps/mobile, and vp run check:changed.
Not checked: no before/after screenshots, since the change is to the text of a label and the rendered text is above. I did not run a full client or a real agent turn, or test on Windows. apps/mobile does not call this helper, so its test only confirms the shared module still behaves.
CodeRabbit's & case: vp test run src/threadFindText.test.ts in packages/shared, before: 1 failed, 8 passed, expected [ 'a page.tsx and b page.tsx' ]. After: 9 passed. Temporary fuzz against the parser, 48,465 destinations: Windows disagreements went from 20,405 to 0. The remaining 425 are POSIX paths with a C: segment in the middle, which this does not change. Decoding costs about 34 microseconds per href containing & (10,000 hrefs: 337 ms, single run). Not run on native Windows or in a real client, and this commit came after Maria's verification run.
CodeRabbit's angle bracket case: the extractor drops <...>, so [a](</repo/a&b)/page.tsx>) was parsed again as a bare destination and ended at the ). Those destinations are now parsed in angle form, unless they contain an unescaped < or > or end on a lone backslash, which that form cannot hold. vp test run src/threadFindText.test.ts in packages/shared, before: 1 failed, 8 passed, expected [ 'a page.tsx and b page.tsx' ]. After: 9 passed, with markdownLinks and markdownPipeline passing too. vp run check:changed passes. Not re-rendered in Chromium for this commit: the chip reads the same helper, which is covered only through the search labels.
CodeRabbit's escaped \< case: vp test run src/threadFindText.test.ts, before: 1 failed, 8 passed, expected [ 'a page.tsx and b page.tsx' ]. After: 9 passed. Temporary fuzz against the parser (not committed), 20,686 links with & in angle and bare form: 1,294 disagree, 0 of them bare. 774 have an escaped \> inside angle brackets, because the extractor ends an angle destination at the first >. 520 start or end with a space, because the extractor trims. Both come from extractMarkdownLinkHrefs and match main, and I left them out of this PR since neither is a path an agent is likely to write.
…t folder labels
extractMarkdownLinkHrefs ended a bare destination at the first closing
parenthesis, so route group paths like app/(a)/page.tsx lost their parent
folder labels and their folder text in thread search. Balance parentheses
and honour escapes the way the parser does, with the same nesting limit.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This fixes parent-folder labels for Markdown file links whose paths contain parentheses, and keeps searchable text consistent. The change is confined to parsing and presentation, with bounded nesting and unchanged file-target validation.

Walkthrough
Bare Markdown link destinations now support balanced and escaped parentheses, with nesting limited to 32 levels. File-link consumers decode Markdown escapes before normalizing or resolving extracted destinations.
Changes: Markdown link extraction and resolution
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Scan and validate bare destinations packages/shared/src/markdownLinks.ts, packages/shared/src/markdownLinks.test.ts
The scanner tracks parentheses and escapes. It rejects empty or invalid destinations and nesting beyond 32 levels. Tests cover valid and malformed destinations, including extraction of a later valid link after an over-depth destination.
Decode destinations before file-link resolution packages/shared/src/markdownPipeline.ts, apps/web/src/components/ChatMarkdown.tsx, packages/shared/src/threadFindText.ts, packages/shared/src/threadFindText.test.ts
The shared pipeline decodes Markdown link escapes. ChatMarkdown and thread search decode extracted destinations before normalizing or resolving them. Tests cover parenthesized paths, Windows paths, and HTML-escaped ampersands.
pingdotgg/t3code#28637: Both changes support file-link handling for destinations with routing parentheses.
pingdotgg/t3code#27970: Both changes affect destination-boundary handling in extractMarkdownLinkHrefs.
pingdotgg/t3code#21454: This change uses the shared Markdown parser behavior introduced by that PR to decode destinations while preserving Windows drive paths.

verified on linux using playwright from the repo, /usr/bin/google-chrome, the running dev web client, and real codex gpt-6.1-sol turns through the local provider proxy. the project points at a real git worktree. the agent created and read the files through its shell tool; no mocks, replay provider, fixtures, or database edits were used.
reproduced on github/main at 82b10d546c: links to app/(a)/page.tsx and app/(b)/page.tsx rendered identical page.tsx chips. the same conversation on the original pr head showed parent folders, and thread find found the displayed suffixes.
found an incomplete case on the original head: an escaped-only response still lost both parent folders. pushed the small pre-scan decoding fix to this pr's existing branch, with windows drive-path preservation matching the renderer. final head: d0bf1f932f4bd11f7c5ee28dca0c1c98be33ddcd.
restarted the dev server and ran fresh real codex turns. escaped-only chips now show app/(a) and app/(b). clicking each opened its corresponding route-a or route-b file. ordinary notes.txt opened with its expected contents, the external link opened, and thread find highlighted the folder labels.
extended an existing search test. the escaped-path and windows regressions failed before their fixes. final vp run check:changed 8760d063e903406c8e8f695b0852c0a15fc1e00f passed through blacksmith-check: format, lint, knip, affected typechecks, 70 tests including existing browser tests, and the compiler check. two independent code reviews approved the final head.

…abels
The pre-scan decoded destinations with its own rules, and those differ from
the parser on `&`: it stripped `\.` from Windows paths while the renderer
keeps it, and it left character references like `&` undecoded on every
path. The two then disagreed on the path, so the folder label was lost.
Destinations with `&` now go through the same parser and Windows path plugin
the renderer uses. The helper moves next to that parser, so markdownLinks
stays free of it.
