fix(web): keep following long answers through turn completion - #28451
A long answer can stop scrolling before its end when a turn finishes, with "Scroll to end" still hidden. Re-pin once scrolling stops while following, and use the list's actual layout correction to distinguish remeasurement from reader navigation, including simultaneous shrinkage above and answer growth below. The recovery and initial browser regression come from #28427, with co-author credit; the regression also retains the scroll-away case.
Implemented by Claude Opus 5.5 through T3 Code. Investigated, tested and reviewed by GPT-6.1-Sol through Codex.
Evidence
Before, supplied by the reporter on Windows Chromium: the long answer stops short with the scroll button hidden.
before.mp4
After, head 8fdada5b2e705410a80f41219064fa4824c9d4a1 on Linux Chromium: Replay delivers 200 facts, the view reaches the last fact, scrolling up stays put, and "Scroll to end" returns to the bottom. Idle portions are cut.
after.mp4
The controlled browser regression fails on main. Extended to grow the answer while earlier rows shrink, it also fails on the prior PR commit with a 9,517 px gap, then passes here, including navigation after recovery. Changed-file checks passed 151 browser and unit cases, four affected compiler cases, and affected typechecks.
Not shown: the timing race in the full Replay app, where the baseline also reached the bottom in two runs; native desktop and Windows execution. The failing-before/passing-after proof is the controlled browser regression.
While following, a long answer that landed in one update could leave the
chat stuck far above the end with "Scroll to end" hidden. The turn ending
mid-glide shrinks a row above. LegendList keeps the content in place with
an instant scroll, which cancels its smooth one. Neither LegendList (it
re-pins only within one viewport of the end) nor useTimelineFollow (it
ignores leaving the end while following) re-pinned.
useTimelineFollow now re-pins through scrollToEnd once scrolling stops
short of the end while still following. This recovery and its browser
regression come from NotAnNvidiaFan's #28427.
That re-pin also exposed a detector bug. createUpwardScrollDetector skipped
every scroll event in which content height shrank, so a reader jumping from
the end to the top while a virtualized row remeasured 4px smaller never
released follow, and the re-pin pulled them back. Height loss now explains
only as much upward movement as was lost. Movement beyond that still counts
as navigation, and sub-pixel moves still add up.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — The change keeps long answers following through layout changes and turn completion while preserving scroll-away behavior. Its impact is limited to timeline positioning, with no persistent-data or product-default changes.

Walkthrough
The timeline distinguishes upward reader movement from content changes and list adjustments. While follow mode remains active, it schedules a delayed end repin when the list is away from the end. Tests cover long-answer streaming, turn completion during a glide, and deliberate scrolling away from the end.
The detector uses offset and maximum-offset positions. It accounts for content shrinkage and list adjustments when deciding whether upward movement occurred. Tests cover shrinking content, sub-pixel movement, and programmatic positioning.

The attached viewport accepts scroll adjustments. MessagesTimeline forwards LegendList adjustments, and the patched list reports positions before and after browser scroll corrections.

The follow hook schedules a delayed repin when the list is away from the end and cancels pending checks in other cases. The browser test covers long-answer following, completion during a glide, and scrolling away from the end.

The upward scroll detector let content height lost in a scroll event
explain the same amount of upward movement. When a row above the view
shrinks while the answer below grows, LegendList scrolls up by the full
shrink but the content loses less, so the detector read the difference
as the reader leaving, released follow, and the chat stayed short of the
end.
LegendList's web entry now reports each scroll it makes to keep visible
content in place (onScrollAdjust, before and after offsets). The detector
shifts its baseline by that applied distance, so only the reader's own
movement remains, sub-pixel moves included. The height allowance is gone;
the only other movement it explains is the browser pulling the scroll up
to a new, smaller end.

Add a timer-ordering assertion for upward navigation.
The current test waits for recovery to reach the end before it scrolls upward. It does not prove that navigation occurs while the 150 ms repin debounce is still pending. Add a focused case that schedules the repin, scrolls upward before the debounce deadline, advances timers past 150 ms, and asserts that the viewport remains away from the end.

Verified latest head 8fdada5b2e705410a80f41219064fa4824c9d4a1 after repeating the real-app pass when the PR advanced from 9d056949b635fd5df50ae7e13da711d864f611a0 on Linux using the real dev web app, repository Playwright and /usr/bin/google-chrome. Added a project pointing at a real git checkout through the app. Used real Codex gpt-6.1-sol turns through the local proxy, with no mocks or Replay.
A new tool-backed 120-item geology answer completed at the bottom: scrollTop 29867, scrollHeight 30715, viewport 848, distance from end 0. Scrolling upward during streaming kept the reading position unchanged while more output arrived. Clicking "Scroll to end" returned to distance 0 and resumed following. Switching to a new thread and back restored the reading position.
The 57 focused tests in MessagesTimeline.browser.test.tsx, timelineScrollTarget.test.ts and timelineViewport.test.ts passed through blacksmith-check after installing its missing Chromium dependencies. Existing CI is green. No source changes or pushes.
Matching app-created data on main:
The same answer loaded on the initial PR head (matching-data comparison):
Real Codex streaming, upward navigation, then "Scroll to end":
The original timing race was not reproduced on github/main (8b74a69019). Both a 120-item answer and a tool-backed 150-item answer reached the bottom, including tab freeze/resume and CPU throttling. These real-app runs verify normal completion and neighboring navigation, but do not establish a failing-before/passing-after proof of the recovery mechanism.
The latest commit addresses the review concern about simultaneous shrinkage above and growth below by reporting the actual list scroll adjustment. Its focused regression passes. I could not isolate that exact race through a real provider turn; normal tool-backed long-answer completion and navigation passed on this head. No source changes were made by this verification pass.
Native desktop, Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, remote/relay and tunnel modes were not exercised on this Linux VM.

Update the LegendList patch hash in pnpm-lock.yaml for the changed patch.
This PR changes patches/@legendapp__list@3.3.5.patch. The lockfile still records the hash of the base patch, 6cbdacd8…307896. The head patch hashes to 4f5c71a5…bcf68. A frozen install compares these values and can fail with ERR_PNPM_LOCKFILE_CONFIG_MISMATCH. Base is consistent, so this PR introduces the failure.
Refresh the lockfile with pnpm install --lockfile-only. Alternatively, replace the recorded hash in the four lockfile locations listed below. The patch content itself should remain as changed.
