feat(server): allow a host-installed browser for previews - #26595
The server Browser always launches the bundled Chrome Headless Shell. Hosts that need an installed Chromium-compatible browser cannot select it. This adds an opt-in executable path for server previews, agent browser tools, and HTML rendering.
T3CODE_SERVER_BROWSER_EXECUTABLE=/opt/google/chrome/chrome t3 serve
Unset or blank retains the bundled browser. A configured executable skips the bundled download. An invalid path raises PreviewBrowserInstallError, including during HTML publication, which removes the failed attachment and its recoverable reference. Ordinary HTML measurement failures retain their existing fallback. Profile locations and sandbox settings stay unchanged.
Observed browser result
On the tested Linux host, Google rejected manual sign-in with the bundled shell. Selecting full Chrome let the user sign in directly, and T3's native agent tools could reopen the authenticated profile. This is one observed result, not a guarantee of Google sign-in compatibility.
Before: Google rejects sign-in
After: signed-in channel in T3
The before image is cropped to remove the sign-in URL and surrounding chat. The after image is an unedited native T3 capture of a public channel. Neither includes account email, private playlists, credentials, or authentication parameters. Original evidence and environment details.
Verification and remaining checks
At head b1a1d26008b8, the focused server run passed 30 tests; 3 existing browser-dependent tests were skipped because no test browser was configured. Red/green regressions cover executable selection and invalid-path errors during HTML publication, including attachment cleanup. The five-file change includes setup guidance for foreground launches, background service.env, restarts, path validation, and host library/AppArmor requirements.
CI is not green. The latest CI run on this head ended cancelled. Its final Check job failed because prerequisite jobs were cancelled; it does not report a source or test failure. Full affected-package typechecking and Knip exports checking remain unverified locally after earlier resource failures.
Verification details and limits
The branch was synced to upstream 9e09926d9782. That sync did not change the browser implementation or its tests. The focused test run and whitespace checks were repeated afterward.
Command: bun run --cwd apps/server test src/preview/PreviewBrowser.test.ts src/preview/ServerBrowserContexts.test.ts src/htmlRender/HtmlRender.test.ts.
The configured-browser regression fails against the upstream implementation. The HTML-publication regression and extended invalid-path cases fail on the original PR head and pass after the review fix.
Formatting, lint, whitespace, the first Knip pass, and server GraphQL generation passed before the base sync. Knip exports checking ran out of heap. Affected-package typechecking was stopped under memory pressure. These are historical results, not newly rerun checks.
Linux runtime acceptance used patched nightly 0.1.4-nightly.20261027.3770, bundled shell 156.0.8078.70 before, and full Chrome 156.0.8078.73 after. The user signed in directly; no cookies or profiles were imported. Native preview_open, t3_preview_list, and preview_snapshot verified the server runtime and Default profile. Closing and reopening a fresh tab retained authentication. Namespace and Seccomp-BPF sandbox protection were reported.
The existing GitHub session survived the deployed runtime/browser restart. Process-restart persistence for the newly created Google session was not tested.
These runtime captures predate the HTML-publication review fix. That fix was source-tested and was not deployed over the running installation. macOS/Windows launches and other browsers were not tested.

Related to discussion #17465. Submitted under the focused configuration route. This selects the executable for an existing server capability without changing defaults, launch flags, or credential handling. The discussion is context, not maintainer approval. Browser settings UI, CDP attachment, and Firefox support are outside this PR.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Adds an opt-in host-browser executable for previews, with path validation and clear configuration errors. Default browser behavior, sandbox settings, and T3-managed profile locations remain unchanged.

The server can use a browser executable selected with T3CODE_SERVER_BROWSER_EXECUTABLE. It validates the configured path before use. If the setting is unset or blank, the managed browser flow remains in use. HTML publishing propagates browser installation errors.

makePreviewBrowser checks the trimmed setting for an absolute path to a file. On non-Windows platforms, the file must have an execute bit. Invalid paths produce PreviewBrowserInstallError without a download. Tests cover valid, invalid, and blank settings. The guide describes configuration and browser requirements.

HtmlRender.publish propagates PreviewBrowserInstallError during height measurement. Tests verify that a failed publish leaves no HTML attachment and no retained page.

Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template closely. It has a clear Problem statement (the server browser always uses the bundled Chrome Headless Shell, so hosts cannot select an installed Chromium-compatible browser) and a Change section that explains the opt-in T3CODE_SERVER_BROWSER_EXECUTABLE setting, its unset/blank and invalid-path behavior, and the HTML publication cleanup. The Scope and approval section links discussion #17465 and the focused configuration route in CONTRIBUTING.md, and explains why the change stays within an existing capability, which the template requires. The Verification section lists the focused test command, the test count, red/green regressions, and runtime acceptance on Linux, and it states what was not checked. Remaining gaps: the author says CI is not green (the run was cancelled), typechecking and Knip export checks are unverified on the current head, and the approval link is context rather than explicit maintainer approval of scope. The template says a focused configuration change needs an explicit approval reference, so a maintainer should confirm the scope before merge. The description also gives a test count of 30 while the objectives say 22 focused tests; this discrepancy should be reconciled. The template's end-of-section note asks for the model and harness used, and the description includes that. The description is complete and specific, so the check passes.

Updated this branch with current main at 9e09926d. Head is now b1a1d260; there are no commits behind the base. The browser implementation and tests are unchanged by the sync, and the guide retains the upstream settings-path corrections.
Repeated the focused checks after syncing: 30 tests passed, 3 existing browser-dependent tests skipped without a test browser, scoped whitespace checks passed. Full typechecking/knip limits remain documented in the PR. The original review finding is fixed and its thread resolved; screenshots remain first in the description.
Could a maintainer approve the fork workflow runs so the required CI checks can execute? GitHub currently reports action_required; the pending checks have not failed or passed yet.

Update the configured-file acceptance check in PreviewBrowser so it verifies the
server account has effective execute access instead of relying on executable
mode bits; when access is unavailable, reject the override and return
PreviewBrowserInstallError.
