PHP 8.5+ crashes Apache24 on Windows. #21303
Description
Description
Apache frequently crashes with these errors both from the Apache error log and WER:
I can confirm that reverting the php version from 8.5+ back to 8.4.6 clears the issue completely.
This is the error log, both from Apache and Windows WER:

The apache2 SAPI had very few changes between 8.4 and 8.5, nothing that seems troublesome at first sight.
It is possible that this is not related to Apache at all, but that your code triggers something that would crash also in CLI for example.
Do you have more info about your code, environment (e.g. php.ini), whether you're using opcache&jit, and maybe if you have a reproducer?
paresy commentedon Mar 1, 2026
We are also seeing crashes on Windows (not yet reported on Linux) using PHP 8.5 (8.5.0 and 8.5.3 tested) in our custom SAPI environment. It is only affecting a very specific user, so it seems to be a niche issue. I am working on getting a better stracktrace/reproducer but it might take a few more days. Maybe this helps though if it is the same.
This is the stacktrace stack comes along in Sentry. Maybe this helps?
Fatal Error: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION_READ / 0xffffffffffffffff zend.c zend_error_zstr_at
-> Oh, i see that "Enabling session.use_trans_sid INI setting is deprecated" seems to be thrown but somehow it does not properly bubble up to the application.

Thank you @paresy , that's a good clue.
Interesting. This crashes on
zval_ptr_dtor(&EG(last_fatal_error_backtrace));. But this comes from a new thread handler when setting the INIs, so supposedly that field isn't initialized yet on ZTS. It won't crash on NTS because those globals are implicitly zeroed.ndossche commentedon Mar 1, 2026
I'll investigate a bit on my Windows VM, please hang on. Not sure if I can get my debugging session finished today though.

This might already be fixed here? #17639
It looks like it is only targeted for 8.6?
ndossche commentedon Mar 1, 2026
Yeah you're right @paresy that fixes the issue. Although the PR targets master, it actually landed into PHP-8.5.4: 16c9652
So please test the PHP 8.5.4 release candidate and see if your issue is resolved.
tmabell commentedon Mar 1, 2026
I'm not doing anything special, not using opcache&jit, and no reproducer. I'll include my php.ini.
php.ini

It's possible you're hitting the same issue as paresy. Are you able to test the PHP 8.5.4 release candidate?
tmabell commentedon Mar 1, 2026
Yes I can but it won't be until tomorrow. I will report back.
tmabell commentedon Mar 2, 2026
@ndossche Unfortunately I will have to wait for the decompiled binaries. That is OK because being on 8.4.6 everything is good so I can be patient. :)
iluuu1994 commentedon Mar 2, 2026
I'm confused, GH-17639 is very old and was merged into master in January of 2025 (which later became 8.5). So this patch should be available since 8.5.0 (including all the alphas, betas and RCs). Hence I'm not sure upgrading will solve your issue (unless it was solved in the meantime).
