These both sound like bugs in the linter for me, would you mind raising issues on the upstream repository?

Did we ever conclude on a format for these revisions? What would a valid set of characters be here? Is there a pattern?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
The current operator implementation constructs:
<release-version>-<first-8-contentID-characters>-<revision-number>
For example:
4.18.0-abcdef12-1
It truncates the release-version portion to keep the name within 255 characters.
Do we want to make this exact format part of the API contract and enforce it with validation, or keep revision names opaque so the implementation can change their format in the future?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
The revision name has no semantics: it's really just a debugging field. Adding validation to just adds a new failure mode for no gain. My extremely strong preference is to leave this unvalidated.

What is the content of a contentID, do we have a format for it?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
The current implementation produces a 64-character lowercase hexadecimal SHA-256 digest incorporating component content, substitutions, and unmanaged CRDs. The implementation deliberately treats this as opaque so consumers do not depend on the hashing algorithm. We could document those semantics while retaining the existing length constraints. Do we instead want to make the digest format part of the API contract?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
The contract associated with contentID is entirely described by this text: it uniquely identifies the content of the revision. Other than that it is opaque.

I assume we have thought about the values here, and that these won't ever contain sensitive data?

The current substitutions are TLS minimum version, cipher-suite names, and infrastructure name; none contains credentials or private keys.

Also I'm hoping to ditch the ones we currently have at some point.

Why is this inlined? This looks like it's trying to circumvent the "unions should not sit alongside other fields" rule, which is there for UX, not for code reasons

Add the stable ClusterAPI configuration API while preserving its schema and ClusterAPIMachineManagement feature gate. Serve both v1 and v1alpha1, with v1 as the storage version. Rename the existing ClusterAPI constant in the MachineConfiguration API to ClusterAPIGroup to avoid a collision with the new resource type. The constant identifies the cluster.x-k8s.io API group for managed boot-image configuration. Its value is unchanged, but downstream Go callers, including machine-config-operator, must update references. Extend the existing OCI image Ref lint exclusion to v1 and narrowly exclude arrayofstruct and minlength diagnostics for the component list in both versions. These checks miss the required discriminator in the embedded component source. The alpha diagnostics were previously hidden by the new-issues-only filter; the exclusions preserve the API unchanged while allowing the promoted types to pass lint. Regenerate API artifacts and add v1 validation coverage.

The v1 component shape cannot be converted to or from v1alpha1, and the CRD has no conversion webhook.
The two versions store a component's source differently:
v1alpha1:typeandimagesit directly on each component.v1: each component has a requiredsourceobject that holdstypeandimage.
The payload CRD has no spec.conversion block. Without it, the default None strategy applies. That strategy only rewrites apiVersion and never moves fields. Both versions are served, so this breaks in both directions:
- Existing objects read as
v1. Objects written whilev1alpha1was the storage version keepcomponents[].typeandcomponents[].imagein etcd. Thev1schema prunes both fields because they are unknown.v1clients then see components without a source. Any status write that keeps those revisions fails withsource: Required value. - New objects read as
v1alpha1.v1objects are stored withcomponents[].source.v1alpha1prunessourceand requirestype.v1alpha1clients see components without a source. Their status writes also fail validation.
The revision immutability rule and the desiredRevision rule stop a controller from repairing or replacing those revisions in place. The ClusterAPIMachineManagement feature gate limits who is affected. This still contradicts the PR description, which says the schema is preserved.
Fix it with one of these options:
- Keep the
v1component shape identical tov1alpha1. ThenNoneconversion works without data loss. - Add a conversion webhook that maps between the two shapes, and set
spec.conversionin the CRD. - Stop serving
v1alpha1and run a storage migration beforev1becomes the storage version.

This is fine. We don't support upgrading anyway.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
@mdbooth Understood. Unsupported upgrades remove the need to preserve existing objects across this transition.
The separate concern is compatibility between the two served versions on a fresh cluster. The relevant check is whether any supported client still uses v1alpha1. If all supported clients use v1, that concern does not affect the supported deployment.

Use the graduated ClusterAPI v1 types throughout controllers, revision generation, provider image handling, manifests, schemes, and tests. Temporarily replace v1alpha1 client-go apply configurations with explicit v1 status apply payloads, preserving field ownership and the UID precondition. Temporarily pin openshift/api to the graduation PR's fork commit until openshift/api#3117 merges. Before merging: - Replace the temporary API fork pin with the merged upstream version. - Update openshift/client-go and use its generated v1 apply configurations instead of the handwritten status payloads. - Remove the temporary implementation-plan document. Verified formatting, lint, full build, and five focused unit suites.
