Summary

Adds spec.canary.nodePlacement.tolerations to ingresses.operator.openshift.io/v1, gated behind the new IngressCanaryNodePlacement feature gate (TechPreviewNoUpgrade), per the enhancement proposal. The tolerations are applied to the ingress canary DaemonSet pods in addition to the canary's default tolerations; the default toleration for the node-role.kubernetes.io/infra taint is always preserved.

The tolerations use a dedicated CanaryToleration type rather than embedding corev1.Toleration, so the schema enforces: operator required (Exists/Equal, rejecting Lt/Gt), effect required (NoSchedule/PreferNoSchedule/NoExecute), value empty with Exists, key a non-empty qualified label key (1-317 chars), value a label value of at most 63 chars with Equal, and tolerationSeconds only with NoExecute. The list holds 1-32 tolerations (atomic). The dedicated operator type also fixes the published OpenAPI enum, which previously advertised Gt and Lt via the corev1 const block.

Because canary and nodePlacement enforce MinProperties=1 and the list enforces MinItems=1, the only way back to the default tolerations is removing the entire spec.canary object while keeping another spec field such as gatewayAPI (spec must not be empty); the field documentation states this explicitly.

Test coverage

  • New suite for the feature-gated CRD covering the toleration validation, plus a gate-disabled suite proving spec.canary is rejected under Strict and pruned under Warn/Ignore on both create and update.
  • The integration test framework gains per-test fieldValidation directives and expectedWarnings assertions: warnings are captured through a per-test client built from a copied rest config, so reads and neighboring requests cannot leak into the assertion, and Warning headers are accumulated across client-go retries. The gate-disabled suite now proves Warn admission and update actually emit the unknown field "spec.canary" warning while Strict and Ignore emit none.

Jira: https://redhat.atlassian.net/browse/NE-2928
Enhancement: openshift/enhancements#2145

Verified locally: make test-unit, tests-module unit tests (including the new warning-recorder tests), make -C operator/v1 test (2590 specs, 0 failures), and make verify (protobuf generation skipped locally via PROTO_OPTIONAL=1; this PR changes no *.pb.go files).

Walkthrough

The change adds the IngressCanaryNodePlacement feature gate and canary node-placement tolerations to the Ingress v1 API and CRD schemas. Feature-gate manifests enable it for TechPreviewNoUpgrade and disable it in the listed default, DevPreviewNoUpgrade, and OKD configurations. Admission test specifications and generation now support expected API warnings and field-validation options. New tests cover warning handling and validation when canary fields are unavailable.

Full details: Microshift Test Compatibility

Explanation

The pull request adds API integration tests, not MicroShift e2e tests. The new YAML cases are loaded by the existing tests/suite_test.go envtest-based API Integration Suite; tests/generator.go installs CRDs in a local envtest server. No MicroShift-targeted Ginkgo e2e test or MicroShift runtime path was added.

Full details: Single Node Openshift (Sno) Test Compatibility

Explanation

PASS: The pull request adds operator API admission cases in YAML and standard Go warning-recorder tests. The existing Ginkgo generator runs these cases against envtest CRDs and Kubernetes API validation; the added cases do not create or schedule pods, inspect nodes, test affinity, drain/failover, scaling, or endpoint distribution. The nodePlacement and taint names validate API fields only, so no SNO-incompatible multi-node assumption is introduced.

Full details: Topology-Aware Scheduling Compatibility

Explanation

The PR changes the Ingress API schema, CRDs, feature-gate manifests, and test utilities. It does not add or modify a deployment manifest, pod template, controller, replica strategy, affinity, topology spread constraint, node selector, or PDB. The new toleration schema also rejects empty-key wildcard tolerations. Therefore, it introduces none of the listed topology-unaware scheduling patterns.

Full details: Ote Binary Stdout Contract

Explanation

The pull request adds no process-level stdout writes. Changed Go code contains only warning recording, HTTP test-response writes to an http.ResponseWriter, and fmt.Errorf/fmt.Sprintf calls. No added main, TestMain, suite setup, fmt.Print* to stdout, log.Print*, klog, or os.Stdout usage appears in the reviewed diff.

Full details: Ipv6 And Disconnected Network Test Compatibility

Explanation

No explicit IPv6 or disconnected-network failure was introduced. The new admission cases are YAML inputs for the existing Ginkgo envtest API integration suite and contain no IP addresses, CIDRs, URL construction, public hostnames, image pulls, or external requests. The added warning unit tests use a local httptest server through dynamic server.URL; they do not hardcode IPv4 or require public connectivity.

Full details: No-Weak-Crypto

Explanation

The authoritative pull-request diff contains no MD5, SHA-1, DES, 3DES, RC4, Blowfish, or ECB usage. It adds no custom cryptographic implementation and no comparison of secrets or tokens. The comparison logic added for expected API warnings compares warning strings, not secrets or tokens.

Full details: Container-Privileges

Explanation

The reviewed diff adds only Ingress test objects, CustomResourceDefinition schemas, feature-gate lists, and code or generated API metadata. A second scan of all changed YAML/JSON additions found no container or pod security settings: no privileged, hostPID, hostNetwork, hostIPC, SYS_ADMIN, allowPrivilegeEscalation, or securityContext entries. No explicit container-privileges failure is introduced.

Full details: No-Sensitive-Data-In-Logs

Explanation

The pull request adds no production logging and introduces no passwords, tokens, API keys, PII, internal hostnames, or customer data. The only output-related code is test-only warning capture and assertion formatting in tests/warnings.go and tests/warnings_test.go; its messages contain generic test warnings such as unknown field names.

Full details: Stable And Deterministic Test Names

Explanation

The new YAML case names become Ginkgo Entry titles through Entry(testEntry.Name, ...) in tests/generator.go:199-201 and :360-362. Several titles encode exact fixture data instead of stable behavior, including invalid key followed by long literal strings at operator/v1/tests/ingresses.operator.openshift.io/IngressCanaryNodePlacement.yaml:1082 and :1097, invalid Equal value followed by a literal string at :1193, and repeated exact boundary values such as valid key 63, Accepts 64 character single-label prefix, and Rejects combined key length 318. These titles are likely to require renaming when validation examples or limits change. The suite-level Describe title is generated from static CRD metadata and is not the issue.

Resolution

Rename the affected cases to stable behavior-level titles that do not embed raw fixture values or avoidable exact limits. For example, use titles such as rejects an overlong qualified key, rejects an invalid label value, accepts a maximum-length value, and rejects a key exceeding the supported length. Apply the same changes to the duplicated create and update cases.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 33.33% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 6 functions across 6 files. (13 skipped: 13 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Full details: Test Structure And Quality

Explanation

The previous failure remains unresolved in the reviewed diff. In tests/generator.go, the new warning-aware Create and Update paths still use ctx, which is context.Background() from tests/suite_test.go, so these cluster requests have no explicit timeout (lines 173 and 325). The new client setup, warning-check, and object-retrieval assertions remain bare or lack operation-specific messages at lines 172, 174, 183, 324, 326, 307, and 344. Existing cleanup and Eventually timeouts do not bound these requests.

Resolution

Add operation-specific messages to every new clientForWarnings error assertion, warning check, and object retrieval assertion in both create and update paths. Use a bounded context, such as context.WithTimeout, for the warning-aware Create and Update requests, or execute them within retries that have an explicit timeout. Preserve the existing cleanup and Eventually timeouts.

Make attempts safe to access across goroutines.

The retry requests are sequential, so the handler does not perform concurrent writes to attempts. However, the handler writes attempts and the test goroutine reads it after the request completes. The Linux Go internal/poll implementation does not provide the claimed ioSync race-detector synchronization. go test -race can therefore report a race.

🐛 Proposed fix
-			attempts := 0
+			var attempts atomic.Int32
 			server := httptest.NewServer(http.HandlerFunc(func(response http.ResponseWriter, request *http.Request) {
 ...
-					attempts++
+					attempt := attempts.Add(1)
 ...
-					if test.retry && attempts == 1 {
+					if test.retry && attempt == 1 {
 ...
-			if test.retry && attempts != 2 {
-				t.Fatalf("attempts = %d, want 2", attempts)
+			if got := attempts.Load(); test.retry && got != 2 {
+				t.Fatalf("attempts = %d, want 2", got)
 			}

Add "sync/atomic" to the imports.

Make the attempts counter in the warning test race-safe by using
sync/atomic.Int32, incrementing it with Add in the HTTP handler, and comparing
the returned attempt number for retry logic. Load the counter before the final
assertion and report the loaded value, and add the required sync/atomic import.

EP must be merged before going into TPNU.

Also, should have DPNU as well. As long as there is some consensus that the EP is going the right direction, we can merge this gate into DPNU-only while the EP is still not yet merged.

I would like to see how the review of the EP will take and if it will be quite fast since it is a straightforward change we skip DPNU and merge after the EP

It looks like all these validations would be better enforced on the underlying CanaryToleration fields themselves. Let's enforce these there.

Don't import the corev1 types for this, just make this a local type alias to string and do the conversion to the corev1.TaintEffect type in the controller.

@everettraven Thank you very much for you feedback. I should have taken all your comments into account except (at the moment) the one related to the DPNU because I would like to see if we can merge the EP soon, otherwise if this PR it will be ready for merge I'll go in the direction you are suggesting.

Add spec.canary.nodePlacement.tolerations to ingresses.operator.openshift.io/v1,
gated behind the new IngressCanaryNodePlacement feature gate
(TechPreviewNoUpgrade), per openshift/enhancements#2145.

The tolerations are applied to the ingress canary DaemonSet pods in addition
to the canary daemonset's default tolerations. The list holds 1 to 32
tolerations (atomic list), and each toleration is constrained by CEL rules:
operator must be "Exists" or "Equal"; effect must be "NoSchedule",
"PreferNoSchedule", or "NoExecute"; value must be empty when operator is
"Exists"; key must be non-empty, so a toleration with an empty key and
operator "Exists", which tolerates all taints, is rejected; and
tolerationSeconds requires effect "NoExecute".

Add an integration test suite covering the field's validation.

…t assertions

Teach the test framework to send a per-test fieldValidation directive on
create and update requests, so suites can exercise server-side unknown
field handling (Strict, Warn, Ignore). An empty value keeps the server
default, so existing suites are unaffected.

Also complete the Expect() calls that had no matcher, which are silent
no-ops: the post-create object fetch, the two CRD fetches in the
initialCRDPatches path, and the two object fetches in the onUpdate flow
now assert To(Succeed()). The DeleteAllOf in AfterEach is left unasserted
on purpose: AfterEach runs LIFO, after the CRD has been uninstalled.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
Align spec.canary.nodePlacement.tolerations with the enhancement by
replacing the embedded corev1.Toleration with a dedicated CanaryToleration
type: operator and effect are required, the key must be a qualified label
key of 1-317 characters and, for Equal, the value a label value of at
most 63 characters, both enforced with CEL format rules; all validation
markers are documented in the field comments.

The operator field gets a dedicated CanaryTolerationOperator type because
the OpenAPI generator derives enums from the const block of the
referenced corev1 type, which advertises Gt and Lt even though the CRD
rejects them. The new type carries both the kubebuilder enum marker,
leaving the CRD schema byte-identical, and +enum, so OpenAPI now
publishes exactly Exists and Equal.

Extend the integration tests with validation cases in the enabled suite,
and add a suite for the gate-disabled CRD proving that spec.canary is
rejected under Strict and pruned under Warn and Ignore on both create
and update.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ations doc

The tolerations comment said to remove all additional tolerations by
omitting the field "rather than setting an empty list", but with
MinProperties=1 on canary and nodePlacement and MinItems=1 on the list
there is no valid empty form to fall back to: the only way back to the
default tolerations is removing the whole spec.canary object, and since
IngressSpec enforces MinProperties=1, another spec field such as
gatewayAPI must remain. State that explicitly and regenerate the
artifacts.

Teach the integration test framework to assert admission warnings via
an optional expectedWarnings list on onCreate and onUpdate tests:
omitted keeps the legacy behavior, an empty list requires no warnings,
and otherwise every substring must match a warning and every warning
must be matched. Warnings are captured through a per-test client built
from a copied rest config, so reads and neighboring requests cannot
leak into the assertion, and headers are accumulated across client-go
retries so error and 429 paths are covered. The recorder is covered by
unit tests, and the gate-disabled Ingress suite now proves that Warn
admission and update emit the unknown field "spec.canary" warning while
Strict and Ignore emit none.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
Enforce the toleration validation rules on the CanaryToleration fields
themselves instead of the tolerations list: cross-field rules move to
struct-level XValidations so errors are reported per item, and the
qualified-name check moves onto the key field. Replace the corev1
TaintEffect import with a local CanaryTolerationEffect type and document
that an omitted value and the empty string are semantically equivalent.

I'm wondering if some of these fields would benefit from a couple discriminated unions.

Something like:

tolerations:
  - key: mykey
    effect:
        policy: NoSchedule | NoExecute | PreferNoSchedule
        noExecute: # can only be set when policy == NoExecute
          tolerationSeconds: 5
    operation:
      operator: Exists | Equals
      equals: # can only be set when operator == Equals
        value: myValue

A pattern like this allows us to enforce things like cannot set value when operator == Exists via the API structure.

It also allows us the ability to expand to support future policy/operations that may require different configuration options.
