This marks the "Enabled" and "AMDEncryptedVirtualization" values as not longer supported in the Openshift API. Both configured GCP machines to run on AMD SEV confidential computing technology.

[See OCPSTRAT-3449 for more information.](https://redhat.atlassian.net/browse/OCPSTRAT-3449) tracks this.
For changes in other openshift components see:

📝 Walkthrough

The changes mark Enabled and AMDEncryptedVirtualization as deprecated. They remove these options from the confidential compute documentation and validation. The documentation now lists the remaining SEV-SNP and Intel TDX options and their supported machine series.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to ad420

GCP machine specs that still use the retired AMD SEV options may stop accepting updates after upgrade. The published API documentation also still lists those options as allowed. Confirm the upgrade and migration path for existing machines and fix the documentation before merging.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

No functions found in the changed files to evaluate docstring coverage. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 0 functions across 1 files.

Full details: Stable And Deterministic Test Names

Explanation

The pull request changes only GCP API comments and generated OpenAPI documentation. The changed files contain no Ginkgo test titles (It, Describe, Context, or When), so no unstable or overly specific test name is introduced.

Full details: Microshift Test Compatibility

Explanation

No new Ginkgo e2e tests were added. The pull request changes one API source file and three generated documentation/OpenAPI files only. Therefore, the MicroShift test compatibility check is not applicable.

Full details: Single Node Openshift (Sno) Test Compatibility

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only GCP API comments and generated API documentation/schema files. It adds no Ginkgo e2e tests or other test code, so the SNO multi-node compatibility check is not applicable.

Full details: Topology-Aware Scheduling Compatibility

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only the GCP provider API type documentation and generated OpenAPI/Swagger descriptions. It adds no deployment manifests, operator code, controllers, replicas, affinity, topology spread, node selectors, tolerations, or PDBs. Therefore it introduces no topology scheduling constraint covered by this check.

Full details: Ote Binary Stdout Contract

Explanation

The pull request changes only GCP API documentation and generated OpenAPI/Swagger descriptions. The diff adds no main, init, TestMain, suite setup, logging, fmt.Print, klog, or other stdout writes. The changed generated Go code contains data maps and a SwaggerDoc accessor only, so it cannot corrupt OTE JSON stdout.

Full details: Ipv6 And Disconnected Network Test Compatibility

Explanation

The pull request changes only GCP API comments, validation documentation, and generated OpenAPI documentation. It adds no Ginkgo e2e tests and no test connectivity, IPv4 parsing, or network assumptions.

Full details: No-Weak-Crypto

Explanation

PASS. The PR changes only confidential-compute comments and generated API documentation/schema validation. It adds no MD5, SHA1, DES, RC4, 3DES, Blowfish, ECB usage, custom cryptography, or secret/token comparisons.

Full details: Container-Privileges

Explanation

The pull request changes only GCP API comments and generated API documentation/schema files. The diff adds no container or Kubernetes manifest settings for privileged, hostPID, hostNetwork, hostIPC, SYS_ADMIN, root execution, or allowPrivilegeEscalation.

Full details: No-Sensitive-Data-In-Logs

Explanation

The pull request changes API comments, validation metadata, and generated OpenAPI descriptions only. The diff adds no logging calls or log-message changes, and it introduces no output of passwords, tokens, API keys, PII, session IDs, hostnames, or customer data.

Hi @bgartzi. Thanks for your PR.

I'm waiting for a openshift member to verify that this patch is reasonable to test. If it is, they should reply with /ok-to-test on its own line. Until that is done, I will not automatically test new commits in this PR, but the usual testing commands by org members will still work.

Tip

We noticed you've done this a few times! Consider joining the org to skip this step and gain /lgtm and other bot rights. We recommend asking approvers on your previous PRs to sponsor you.

Once the patch is verified, the new status will be reflected by the ok-to-test label.

I understand the commands that are listed here.

Use Go's recognized deprecation format.

Go tooling recognizes deprecation notices only when a paragraph starts with Deprecated:. These comments use DEPRECATED:, and the SEV notice is not a separate paragraph. Correct the marker and change not longer to no longer. (go.dev)

Remove the retired values from the field documentation.

This comment still lists Enabled and AMDEncryptedVirtualization as allowed values, but line 183 removes them from validation. Generated API documentation will contradict server validation. List only the remaining values.

🌐 Web query:

Kubernetes CustomResourceDefinition validation behavior when an existing object becomes invalid after enum schema change update unchanged field official documentation

💡 Result:

**Kubernetes supports validation ratcheting for this case.** If you remove an enum value from a CRD’s schema, an existing custom resource that still has that value can generally be updated **provided the enum field is unchanged**. Ratcheting allows an update when the portion that fails validation was already invalid and remains unchanged; it does not allow an update to introduce a newly invalid value. ([github.com](https://github.com/kubernetes/website/blob/main/content/en/docs/tasks/extend-kubernetes/custom-resources/custom-resource-definitions.md?utm_source=openai))

Ratcheting is stable in Kubernetes **v1.33**. On versions **older than v1.30**, the `CRDValidationRatcheting` feature gate must be enabled; the current documentation says v1.30+ uses the behavior without that prerequisite. ([github.com](https://github.com/kubernetes/website/blob/main/content/en/docs/tasks/extend-kubernetes/custom-resources/custom-resource-definitions.md?utm_source=openai))

So, for a removed enum value: **change another field, leave the enum field untouched, and the update should be accepted**—assuming ratcheting is available and no other validation error blocks it. If you change that enum field, it must satisfy the new schema. This is an application of the documented unchanged-invalid-part rule to enum validation. ([github.com](https://github.com/kubernetes/website/blob/main/content/en/docs/tasks/extend-kubernetes/custom-resources/custom-resource-definitions.md?utm_source=openai))

Preserve deprecated enum values until the upgrade path is defined.

The base schema accepted Enabled and AMDEncryptedVirtualization. If existing objects contain either value, new writes that include the field will fail validation after this enum removal. On clusters without CRD validation ratcheting, updates to other fields can also fail when the deprecated value remains unchanged. Define the supported OpenShift versions and migration path before removing these values.

Since this is a change for MAPI, could you also link to the MAPI PR that updates the validating admission webhook?

Deprecated is not equivalent to removed. Were there notices that this option would be deprecated and when it would be removed?

How was that done? Did we issue any admission-time and audit log warnings during creation of net-new machines that set these values that they are deprecated and would be removed?

It is also worth noting that this must ratchet. By removing support for these values in the API, we invalidate existing instances of this API. The controller still needs to support these values until there is no longer any instances of this API with this value configured.

I wrote DEPRECATED to mimic what seemed to be rule for other options that went through the same process. Maybe the "DEPRECATED" labels I saw were just left behind?

Were there notices that this option would be deprecated and when it would be removed?
...
How was that done?

Just a notice on docs on 4.20 see https://redhat.atlassian.net/browse/OCPSTRAT-2509.

As @JoelSpeed suggested, let's hold this (and installer/mapi/capi counterparts) until some actual decision is taken.
