Summary

  • Remove the entire FeatureGateNewOLMOwnSingleNamespace registration from features/features.go, including the exported Go symbol.
  • Regenerate the feature-gate summary and payload manifests so the name is absent from both enabled and disabled lists.

Validation

  • Full existing unit tests.
  • Lint, builds, formatting, and clean-diff checks.
  • Feature-gate and Markdown generation verification.

Compatibility

External Go consumers referencing the removed export must update their references. This removes the registration in this repository; it does not remove downstream implementation code or change the existing arbitrary-name passthrough for explicit CustomNoUpgrade overrides.

📝 Walkthrough

The change removes NewOLMOwnSingleNamespace from the feature-gate registry, feature-gate manifests, and feature list. It adds a test that checks the gate is absent from the registry and from enabled and disabled gates across feature-set versions, cluster profiles, and feature sets.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 40797

The change removes an unused feature gate and adds regression coverage. No merge-blocking risk was found. External Go consumers that reference the removed export will need updating.

Full details: Test Structure And Quality

Explanation

PASS: The only added test uses Go's standard testing package (Test..., t.Run, t.Parallel), not Ginkgo. The pull request adds no It blocks, cluster operations, Eventually/Consistently calls, or resource setup requiring cleanup. The Ginkgo-specific requirements therefore do not apply.

Explanation

PASS: The pull request adds no Ginkgo e2e tests. The only added test is a standard Go testing unit test in features/features_test.go, and the changed-file diff contains no added It, Describe, Context, or When calls. The MicroShift e2e compatibility check is therefore not applicable.

Full details: Single Node Openshift (Sno) Test Compatibility

Explanation

The pull request adds only a standard Go unit test, TestNewOLMOwnSingleNamespaceNotRegistered, in features/features_test.go. It does not add Ginkgo e2e tests or make any multi-node or HA assumptions. The remaining changes remove feature-gate registrations and manifest entries.

Full details: Topology-Aware Scheduling Compatibility

Explanation

PASS: The pull request only removes a feature-gate registration, summary entries, and payload feature-gate list entries, and adds absence tests. The changed lines introduce no scheduling constraints such as affinity, topology spread, node selectors, tolerations, replica logic, or PDB settings.

Full details: Ote Binary Stdout Contract

Explanation

PASS. The PR only removes a feature-gate registration, updates generated Markdown and YAML manifests, and adds a unit test. The changed Go files contain no main, init, TestMain, suite setup, logging, or stdout writes. The test's t.Errorf calls are not process-level stdout writes under this check.

Full details: Ipv6 And Disconnected Network Test Compatibility

Explanation

PASS: The pull request adds one standard Go unit test, TestNewOLMOwnSingleNamespaceNotRegistered, in features/features_test.go. It does not add Ginkgo e2e tests, IPv4 networking logic, or external connectivity. The remaining changes only remove feature-gate entries from source and YAML manifests.

Full details: No-Weak-Crypto

Explanation

The pull request only removes a feature-gate registration and manifest entries, and adds an absence test. The added code contains no MD5, SHA1, DES, RC4, 3DES, Blowfish, ECB, custom cryptography, or secret-comparison logic.

Full details: Container-Privileges

Explanation

PASS. The pull request only removes a feature-gate registration, test code, documentation, and feature-gate list entries. The authoritative diff adds no privileged container settings, hostPID, hostNetwork, hostIPC, SYS_ADMIN, allowPrivilegeEscalation, or root security settings.

Full details: No-Sensitive-Data-In-Logs

Explanation

The pull request adds no application logging. The only added formatted output is test failure text containing the static feature-gate name and test identifiers. Other changes remove feature-gate registrations and manifest entries. No passwords, tokens, API keys, PII, session IDs, hostnames, or customer data are logged.

Full details: Stable And Deterministic Test Names

Explanation

The new test creates dynamic subtest titles at features/features_test.go:19 with fmt.Sprintf("%d/%s/%s", version, clusterProfile, featureSet). The title includes the version, cluster profile, and feature-set values from AllFeatureSets(). These names can change when supported versions, profiles, or feature sets change, and the title does not state the behavior under test.

Resolution

Use a static subtest title, such as all supported feature sets, or remove the subtest and include the version/profile/feature-set values only in assertion failure messages inside the test body.

Test logic is correct. One recommended improvement.

The registry check and the traversal of all AllFeatureSets() combinations match the allFeatureGates and FeatureGateDescription contracts. The t.Parallel() calls are safe, because Go 1.22 and later gives each loop iteration its own variables. Go 1.26 is declared in go.mod.

The sentinel string is an untyped constant. It compares against configv1.FeatureGateName without a compile-time link to that type. The test would be clearer with a typed constant, and a typo would still pass silently.

The same assertion also runs in each subtest. The registry check runs once in the parent test. The loop checks the enabled and disabled lists through a map, so their order is nondeterministic. This is harmless because failures are reported per subtest.

Consider a typed constant for clarity:

♻️ Proposed change
-	const removedFeatureGate = "NewOLMOwnSingleNamespace"
+	const removedFeatureGate configv1.FeatureGateName = "NewOLMOwnSingleNamespace"

Add the import configv1 "github.com/openshift/api/config/v1".

Investigated the failed AWS OVN run.

All four blocking failures are OLMv1 tests tagged [OCPFeatureGate:NewOLMOwnSingleNamespace]: single-namespace installation, own-namespace installation, combined watch modes, and invalid watch-namespace validation. The test runner's detected feature-gate list omits the removed gate, but these tests still execute. Their ClusterExtensions report:

unsupported bundle: bundle does not support AllNamespaces install mode

Three tests time out waiting for Installed=True; the invalid-namespace test times out waiting for Progressing=False.

JUnit attributes these tests to olm-operator-controller, binary olmv1-tests-ext, commit de13bec40. The matching source is openshift/operator-framework-operator-controller/openshift/tests-extension/test/olmv1-singleownnamespace.go, not the cluster-olm-operator mapper tests. At that source revision, the bundle rejection is conditional on single/own-namespace support being disabled.

The removal needs matching cleanup of these feature-dependent extension tests. I have not retried the job or restored the removed gate; neither would address that mismatch.

Removed the PR-added features/features_test.go in 01fd34642affc4f027ee9e47bd335e0abe0b96aa. The registration removal and generated files are unchanged. Existing unit tests, lint, builds, and feature-gate/Markdown verification pass locally.

What happened to this feature? Has it been paused? Stopped? Removed?

@redhat-chai-bot

The scope here is removal of the feature-gate registration and its generated manifest entries, rather than promotion to an always-enabled feature. The companion integration removal is openshift/cluster-olm-operator#256. Neither change by itself removes the implementation from operator-controller.

I don't have verified context for whether the broader feature effort has been paused or stopped, so I can't substantiate that product-level rationale from these changes alone. That rationale still needs confirmation before merge.

AI-generated. Review for accuracy.

Remove the registration and exported feature-gate variable so the name
is no longer published in fixed feature sets, including disabled lists.
Go consumers referencing the removed export must update those references.

Regenerate payload manifests and the feature summary to reflect the
registration removal.

Explicit CustomNoUpgrade names are still passed through by render; this
change does not remove downstream implementation behavior.

Removed. It will not be promoted to GA as part of OLMv1 MVP's work, and we do not want this feature present when layered product teams begin testing their OLMv1 compatibility using TP nightlies in the 5.1 and 5.2 development windows.

Reason: PR removes the NewOLMOwnSingleNamespace feature gate registration from features/features.go and all payload-manifests. The gate was enabled only in TechPreview and DevPreview feature sets (SelfManaged); Default had it listed but never enabled. Changed surfaces: 1. TechPreview/DevPreview FeatureGate resource no longer lists NewOLMOwnSingleNamespace as enabled — the primary behavioral change. 2. Default/OKD FeatureGate manifests lose a disabled-list entry — structural cleanup, no behavioral impact. 3. Exported Go symbol FeatureGateNewOLMOwnSingleNamespace deleted — compile-time impact for external consumers, already validated by passing first-stage build. Selected: - e2e-aws-ovn-techpreview: TechPreview parallel e2e on AWS — exercises the feature set where the gate was enabled and is now removed; covers OLM-related TechPreview behavior. - e2e-aws-ovn: Default parallel e2e on AWS — validates basic cluster health with updated payload manifests. - e2e-upgrade: Upgrade e2e on AWS — validates the upgrade path handles the removed gate correctly (cluster upgrading from a version where the gate existed). Not selected (with rationale): - vSphere jobs: pipeline_run_if_changed targets types_infrastructure.go and VSphere CRDs; this PR touches neither. - Hypershift jobs: Hypershift manifests change identically to SelfManaged; same FeatureGate read mechanism. SelfManaged TechPreview coverage is sufficient. - CustomNoUpgrade: The gate was in TechPreview/DevPreview, not CustomNoUpgrade. - Serial TechPreview (1of2, 2of2): Parallel TechPreview covers the bulk of the relevant test surface. - Azure/GCP: Change is cloud-agnostic; AWS coverage is sufficient. - Additional upgrade variants: Basic upgrade validates the gate-removal upgrade path.

Investigated the current-head e2e-upgrade failure: run 2112951559921864704 failed in ipi-install-install-stableinitial, before upgrade testing. The installer failed generating DNS Config with no public route53 zone found matching name (the domain is redacted in the published log), then exited with code 1.

This is an installation DNS-zone lookup failure, not an observed feature-gate or upgrade assertion failure. The log does not establish why the zone lookup failed; no source change is justified by this evidence, and I have not retriggered the job. The existing merge-order hold remains in place.

Reviewed the six newly failed current-head jobs in the latest CI report, separately from the already-investigated upgrade installation failure.

  • AWS OVN, CustomNoUpgrade, TechPreview, Azure and GCP: the four NewOLMOwnSingleNamespace OTE tests still execute and fail. The logs include unsupported bundle: bundle does not support AllNamespaces install mode, with installation/status waits timing out. This repeats the earlier removal-versus-remaining-test mismatch; these tests are being removed in NO-ISSUE: Remove NewOLMOwnSingleNamespace OTE tests operator-framework-operator-controller#833.
  • HyperShift conformance: the same four named tests are the only blocking failures, but fail with no matches for kind "ClusterCatalog" in version "olm.operatorframework.io/v1". That is a different observed failure mode; I have not established why the kind is unavailable in this run.
  • Additional blockers: CustomNoUpgrade also fails the three Gateway API CRD-protection tests (Expected an error to have occurred. Got: <nil>). CustomNoUpgrade and TechPreview also fail the HAProxy HTTP/2 test (HTTP/1.1 versus expected HTTP/2.0). Their underlying causes are not established by this investigation; removing the OLM tests alone does not resolve these additional failures.

This PR removes, rather than enables/registers, the gate. No restoration of the gate or test bypass is warranted by these results. The existing merge-last hold remains appropriate while the companion changes land. No code changes or retries issued.
