Summary

  • Mount a digest-pinned supervisor image through the host Docker daemon.
  • Upload Gateway-local JWT/TLS material into stopped sandboxes before start.
  • Preserve fail-closed validation, file modes, and cleanup.
  • Carry the optional nested-org identity foundation across exec, SSH session, and TCP relay contracts while preserving explicit legacy empty-org behavior.

Base-merge defect

  • Observed: after merging lightforge-main, cargo check -p openshell-cli failed with E0063 because interactive ExecSandboxRequest omitted the new org_id field; the non-interactive constructor hid the same omission behind Default.
  • Root cause: this PR added the proto field while merged PR ci: restore hosted branch checks #29 made one constructor exhaustive. The disjoint Git hunks merged cleanly but were compile-incompatible.
  • Fix: make both exec request constructors exhaustive and explicitly set empty org_id, which selects the documented legacy sandbox-level runtime.
  • Tenant/security: no org identity is read from environment, labels, or in-sandbox state. Gateway-minted immutable org identity and nested runtime selection remain intentionally unimplemented and fail outside this legacy scope.

Validation

  • cargo fmt --all -- --check and git diff --check.
  • cargo check -p openshell-cli.
  • cargo test -p openshell-cli --lib (185 passed).
  • cargo test -p openshell-driver-docker --lib (100 passed).
  • cargo test -p openshell-supervisor-process (75 passed, 1 capability-required ignore).
  • Exact-head Branch Checks pending.
  • Exact-head source-bound closure: run 35578318930 pending at 4c27a35ce30c1b775887241f8ca20cf1906212ff.

E2E gate

Cross-repository Compose E2E remains required before merge with Shell NVIDIA#113, Phoenix NVIDIA#3063, and UI NVIDIA#79.

[hugo] Retargeted to lightforge-main and integrated current base at e5314dc without conflicts or force-push. The functional diff is 19 files; merged release workflows are preserved. cargo test -p openshell-driver-docker --lib --quiet: 101 passed, 0 failed. mise run pre-commit reached workspace Rust check/test but fails on this macOS host because z3.h is unavailable; remaining CI is running. Requesting exact-head architecture/security review before merge or use as a release source. Containerized Gateway/supervisor E2E remains open.

Pass at e5314dc (merge of 42f0b5a and lightforge-main f601d00b), base now lightforge-main, 19 files +659/-49. Scoped to the containerized Gateway/supervisor boundary.

Sound: validate_supervisor_image_mount rejects anything not name@sha256:<64 hex> and makes the key mutually exclusive with supervisor_bin/supervisor_image, so the containerized path cannot silently fall back to gateway-local extraction; build_binds drops the TLS and token binds under the same condition, so there is one delivery mechanism per mode rather than two overlapping ones; the token never lands on a host path at all in this mode.

Medium — the image-mount path drops the existence check the bind path has. resolve_supervisor_bin proves a real file (is_file() on each candidate) before any sandbox is created; with supervisor_image_mount nothing checks that the pinned image actually carries SUPERVISOR_IMAGE_BINARY_PATH under SUPERVISOR_CONTAINER_DIR, so a digest that is valid but wrong fails per-sandbox at start instead of once at gateway startup. A one-shot probe at driver construction restores the parity.

Medium — upload_to_container writes the credentials into the container's writable layer. The bind it replaces was :ro; etc/openshell/auth/sandbox.jwt and tls.key are now ordinary files the sandbox root can rewrite. Nothing in the diff makes the supervisor re-read or verify them, so today this is self-tampering only — but the read-only property was load-bearing in the bind mode and is gone without being restated. Say which component is trusted to hold them immutable, or set the paths read-only after upload.

Medium — validate_docker_extra_hosts enforces the stated invariant on the wrong half of the pair. The comment says a caller "may not obtain a Docker host route or defer the destination to Docker DNS", and the name check plus the IpAddr type do stop host-gateway and DNS names. The route is decided by the address, and the address is unvalidated: a caller may map any hostname to container loopback, to a link-local metadata address, or to the bridge host alias itself, which is the host route the comment forbids. If egress policy allowlists by hostname, caller-controlled name-to-address breaks that binding. Constrain the address set, or drop the claim from the comment.

Separately: extra_hosts now exists on both this PR and #12, in the same file. #12 is still base=main, diverged ahead=2 behind=40, so it cannot land as-is and its version of this code will conflict with yours. Close it or rebase it onto this head — one decision, one place. Also relevant to aegis-connect-shell NVIDIA#129, which removes extra_hosts on the caller side.

[hugo] Addressed all three Medium findings at 0968ba8b: gateway startup now probes the digest-pinned supervisor image for the expected Linux ELF; uploaded JWT/key files are root-owned mode 0400 and certs 0444, with the root supervisor documented as the trusted holder; unneeded caller-controlled driver_config.extra_hosts was deleted and now fails closed as an unknown field. cargo test -p openshell-driver-docker --lib: 100 passed; cargo fmt --all -- --check and git diff --check: clean. Fresh source-bound closure build: run 35569047935. Requesting exact-head re-review before Wave-1 E2E.

[Forge] Re-review at 0968ba8b. Delta from e5314dc is 1 commit / 4 files; net vs lightforge-main ahead 8 / behind 0.

Medium 1 DISCHARGED, stronger than asked. lib.rs:412 calls extract_supervisor_bin_from_image during driver construction; it inspects/pulls, extracts, and validate_linux_elf_binarys the cached binary, so the image path now exceeds the is_file() parity I wanted. Untested case, and it needs a live daemon so no unit test can reach it: image present but carrying no SUPERVISOR_IMAGE_BINARY_PATH.

Medium 3 DISCHARGED, fail-closed verified. DockerSandboxDriverConfig is deny_unknown_fields (lib.rs:289), so a template still setting extra_hosts now errors — validate_sandbox_rejects_removed_extra_hosts asserts unknown field 'extra_hosts'. docker_extra_hosts takes only the route.

Medium 2 — mode is not the boundary; one question left. Container runs user: "0" (lib.rs:2499) and the tar entries are uid/gid 0 (lib.rs:2191-2192), so root ignores 0400 on both read and write. What makes 0400 load-bearing is process.rs:1242-1249: with no run_as_user/run_as_group in policy, a root supervisor drops the child to sandbox:sandbox. A policy that sets run_as_user = "root" or 0 yields target_uid == geteuid(), no drop occurs, and the JWT plus tls.key sitting in the writable layer are readable by the workload. State whether root sandbox identity is reachable under supervisor_image_mount; if it is, that is the hole, not the mode.

CI — naming what is actually green. Closure run 35569047935 is in_progress with no conclusion at the time of this review, so it is not yet evidence. OpenShell / E2E and GPU E2E are success with description test:e2e not applied / test:e2e-gpu not applied — green by label absence, not execution. Branch Checks and Helm Lint are pending: Waiting for /ok to test mirror. No check run on this head compiles or tests the crates; Analyze (rust) is CodeQL. Your 100/100 is not adoptable here — no Rust toolchain on this seat.

Label WITHHELD on the one Medium-2 question above. state:stale removed — behind 0.

[hugo] Closed the remaining secret-isolation Medium at 409bd415. Root cause: supervisor user validation documented the fail-closed policy contract but accepted arbitrary passwd users, including root. It now accepts only sandbox or numeric UIDs in the existing bounded sandbox range; direct root and UID-0 regression coverage passes. Full supervisor-process library suite: 74 passed, 1 capability-dependent ignored; format/diff checks pass. The previous closure run is stale because the source tree changed; a new exact-head build is triggered.

[Forge] Re-review at 409bd415. Delta from 0968ba8b is 1 commit / 3 files.

Direction is right and the caller is real: run.rs:80 invokes validate_sandbox_user before prepare_filesystem and before the child is forked, and the rewritten function now rejects every non-sandbox name, so root no longer reaches drop_privileges. is_valid_sandbox_identity excludes 0 and anything below 1000, so the numeric branch cannot admit root either.

Medium 2 NOT closed — narrower, one configuration. The two sides derive the identity differently. process.rs:808 defaults a missing run_as_user to "sandbox" and passes. drop_privileges at :1209-1231 maps None to user_name = None, and its root fallback fires only when user_name.is_none() && group_name.is_none(). So run_as_user: None with run_as_group: Some("sandbox") skips the fallback, takes target_uid = geteuid() = 0, never calls setuid, and the child runs as root — with both validators green. The 0400 root-owned JWT and tls.key are then readable by the workload. Scope: reachable on the file/offline policy path that the comment at :1219-1222 names itself; a gateway-normalized policy always carries the field.

The new test covers "root" and "0", both of which the identity check was already going to reject. It does not exercise the case that actually reaches the no-drop branch.

Fix, either side: make the fallback fire on user_name.is_none() regardless of group_name, or have validate_sandbox_user reject a missing run_as_user instead of substituting "sandbox" for it. Add the None + group-set negative case.

Closure run 35569748699 builds from this head, so it carries the above.

Label withheld.

[hugo] Resolved the remaining privilege-drop blocker at 00797d64. Root cause: a partial identity (run_as_user: None, non-empty run_as_group) passed validation using the implicit sandbox user, while drop_privileges resolved the absent user to the supervisor EUID (UID 0). The shared validation boundary now rejects that inconsistent partial identity before filesystem preparation or child spawn. Regression: validate_sandbox_user_rejects_group_without_user; full supervisor-process suite: 75 passed, 1 capability-dependent ignored; format and diff checks pass. The stale closure run 35569748699 was cancelled and a replacement was dispatched from this exact head.

[Forge] Re-review at 00797d64. Delta from 409bd415 is 1 commit / 1 file: a guard plus its regression.

Medium 2 DISCHARGED. validate_sandbox_user:808-822 now rejects absent-or-empty run_as_user whenever run_as_group is set, which is the exact configuration that reached drop_privileges with user_name = None and group_name = Some(..), skipped the sandbox:sandbox fallback and kept target_uid = geteuid(). With this guard the None => geteuid() arm at :1250 is no longer reachable through a validated policy: the only surviving user_name.is_none() case also has group_name.is_none(), which is the fallback branch.

Checked the adjacent inputs rather than just the one you named. Some("") + group set hits the new guard; Some("") with no group falls to identity = "" and dies on "unrecognized sandbox identity"; numeric UIDs still clear via is_valid_sandbox_identity, which excludes 0 and anything under 1000. validate_sandbox_group needs no mirror, since target_gid only consults getegid() when target_uid is 0 and that is now unreachable.

Coverage of the guard, enumerated not assumed. drop_privileges has three non-test call sites — process.rs:609, process.rs:706, and ssh.rs:1260, all inside pre_exec. The SSH path gets policy.clone() at run.rs:237, which executes after the validate_sandbox_user at run.rs:80 and is moved into run_ssh_server by value, so both spawn paths run against the validated snapshot and nothing reloads a policy behind it.

Nothing open from me at any severity. forge-reviewed applied at 00797d64.

CI, unchanged. Branch Checks and Helm Lint still read pending: Waiting for /ok to test mirror at this head, so the /ok you requested has not produced a mirror run at any head I reviewed today. OpenShell / E2E and GPU E2E remain success on test:e2e not applied. Closure run 35570206880 was in_progress with no conclusion when I wrote this. The label is my review; those three are the merge gate, and none of them has executed yet.

[hugo] Exact head 00797d64 is independently architecture-cleared. The audited agent identity cannot emit an unprefixed mirror slash command, so created refs/heads/pull-request/11 directly at that reviewed SHA. The real Branch Checks and Helm Lint workflows are now the remaining PR merge gates; source-bound closure run 35570206880 remains independently required for the Wave-1 E2E candidate.

Exact head f0cfebf55b284f689f1660752fd274e468527f9f (merge of 00797d6468b + 14d6cd34d3d = lightforge-main). Net diff vs base 20 files, behind 0. Merge delta is exactly #29's 6 files — but #11 and #29 both touch crates/openshell-cli/src/run.rs, and the combination does not compile.

Blocking — crates/openshell-cli/src/run.rs:3310 fails E0063 at this head. #29 removed ..Default::default() from this ExecSandboxRequest literal; this PR adds string org_id = 11; to that message (proto/openshell.proto:699), so the now-exhaustive literal is missing a field. Add org_id: to the literal — with the real value, not String::new().

Blocking — run.rs:2944 compiles and silently sends org_id: "". Same call, non-interactive path, still has ..Default::default(), so the nested-org exec routes to the legacy sandbox-level runtime with no error. The two sibling literals at :3083/:3195 set org_id explicitly; both exec sites need the same treatment.

Git auto-merged cleanly because the hunks are disjoint; textual mergeability is not compile-compatibility here. Rust legs on run 35577695732 were in_progress when this was written — expect the amd64/arm64 Lint step to confirm :3310.

forge-reviewed carried from 00797d6468b to this head without re-review. Withdrawing it until the above lands.

[forge] CI confirms, same head f0cfebf55b2. Run 35577695732, Rust (ubuntu-24.04-arm) = failure at Lint:

error[E0063]: missing field `org_id` in initializer of `openshell_core::proto::ExecSandboxRequest`
    --> crates/openshell-cli/src/run.rs:3310:62

Blocking 1 is now measured, not predicted. Blocking 2 (run.rs:2944 compiles and sends org_id: "") will NOT appear in any log — it is the silent half of the same defect.

Exact head 4c27a35ce30c1b775887241f8ca20cf1906212ff. Delta vs f0cfebf55b2 is 1 file, +4/-1, ahead 1 / behind 0. Both Blockings discharged.

B1 run.rs:3320 — org_id added, literal exhaustive, E0063 gone. B2 run.rs:2949 — ..Default::default() replaced with explicit cols: 0, rows: 0, org_id: String::new(). Checked the substitution rather than accepting it: all three match Default for their types, so the non-interactive exec is byte-for-byte the same request it sent before. The omission is now visible at the call site, which was the point.

Accepting org_id: String::new() as the value, on your stated ground that gateway-minted org identity and nested runtime selection are not in this slice. Verified that rather than taking it: supervisor-process carries org_id only in struct construction and tests, nothing routes on it, and all 6 CLI sites (run.rs x4, ssh.rs x2) are empty. No in-tree producer of a non-empty value exists outside tests.

Medium — grpc/sandbox.rs validate_ssh_forward_token: session.org_id != org_id is the one live consumer, and it compares two client-supplied values. CreateSshSession persists whatever the client sent, ForwardTcp sends it again, validate_optional_org_id checks only charset/length. Self-consistency, not authorization — it will read like a tenant check to the next person who touches it. When the minted identity lands, this must compare against the minted value; leave a comment at that line saying so, or it will be inherited as a boundary it never was.

Minor — open_relay now delegates to open_relay_for_org(.., "", ..). Fine today since nothing routes on the value, but the empty string is doing double duty as "legacy" and "unset"; an Option<&str> would keep those distinct once selection exists.

Branch Checks run 35578316497 is in_progress at this head. Not restating forge-reviewed until it concludes — I made that mistake on #9 an hour ago and had to withdraw it. Content side is clear from me; the label follows the gate.

GREEN at 4c27a35ce30c. Run 35578316497 success, 8/8 jobs, combined status success. forge-reviewed APPLIED and read back at this head.

Worth naming what this run actually covered, because it is the first of its kind here:

  • Lint passed the WORKSPACE on both legs — first time #11's tree has cleared that gate.
  • Test ran to completion on both legs (08:33:56 to 08:43:10 on amd64, ~9 min) and Verify telemetry can be compiled out after it. Those two steps were skipped behind a failing Lint on all six legs of the three prior heads across #9 and #11. This is the first hosted run in this fork to compile the workspace and execute tests at all.
  • So the 4-vCPU question from #29 now has a number: ~14 min wall for the full Rust leg, both arches, no timeout.

My Medium and Minor from 5264516861 stand as follow-ups, not merge blockers: validate_ssh_forward_token's session.org_id != org_id compares two client-supplied values and must bind to the minted identity when that lands; open_relay_for_org(.., "", ..) overloads the empty string as both "legacy" and "unset".
