Unexpected MCP exceptions currently become SCHOOL_UNAVAILABLE without a log entry, causing clients to claim the school portal is down even when LANIS has an internal bug.

Return INTERNAL_ERROR for unexpected exceptions and attach a diagnostic ID, failure stage, and exception type. Log the matching ID and stack-frame locations without exception text or frame locals that could expose session credentials. Server HTTP failures retain SCHOOL_UNAVAILABLE and include their status; writes that may have started retain OUTCOME_UNKNOWN with diagnostics.

Validation: all 122 tests in tests/test_agents.py pass, including checks that diagnostic IDs appear in logs and private exception text stays out of logs and MCP responses. git diff --check passes.

The original recipient-search failure has not been reproduced; this change provides diagnostics for future failures rather than claiming to fix its unknown trigger. No production changes are included.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Unexpected errors are now reported as internal errors rather than school availability issues, helping clarify the type of problem encountered.
    • Error responses include a diagnostic ID and stage to help with follow-up. Private exception details are not included in responses or logs.
    • When a write operation fails after it has started, the result continues to indicate that its outcome is unknown.

Walkthrough

The MCP run path now records failure stages and returns diagnostic details for handled failures. Unexpected non-write exceptions return INTERNAL_ERROR; failures after a write starts remain OUTCOME_UNKNOWN. Tests check diagnostics and ensure private exception text is absent from logs and results.

Explanation

The title states the main change: unexpected MCP exceptions now surface as traceable errors instead of being hidden behind SCHOOL_UNAVAILABLE. The summary confirms the change adds failure_diagnostics, returns INTERNAL_ERROR for unexpected exceptions, and logs matching diagnostic IDs. The title is specific and matches the changeset and objectives.

Nitpick Assert httpstatus and exceptiontype in the recovery test.

537-542: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Assert http_status and exception_type in the recovery test.

The recovery test does not check diagnostics.http_status or diagnostics.exception_type. The PR describes both fields as part of the error response, so these checks cover a stated contract.

Removing http_status from api/agent_mcp.py leaves the SCHOOL_UNAVAILABLE cases (500 and 503) passing. Removing exception_type leaves no assertion failing in the write=True unexpected case. The write=False unexpected case already fails later in this test at the next_step assertion, so it does not isolate the exception_type check.

Suggested test assertions
             assert "fail" in caplog.text
+            if expected_error == "SCHOOL_UNAVAILABLE":
+                assert result["diagnostics"]["http_status"] == failure
+            if failure == "unexpected":
+                assert result["diagnostics"]["exception_type"] == "RuntimeError"

Update the recovery test around the `expected_error` checks to assert
`diagnostics.http_status` equals `failure` for `SCHOOL_UNAVAILABLE` cases and
`diagnostics.exception_type` is `RuntimeError` for `unexpected` failures.

Forward error_id and diagnostics from run in available_tools.

On failure, available_tools copies only error and next_step. lanis_connection returns that object as module_access, so the client never receives the diagnostic ID. For INTERNAL_ERROR, the next_step still asks the client to report that ID.

Add the portal clause to the INTERNAL_ERROR next_step.

The unexpected case with write=False fails its assertion in tests/test_agents.py:570-574. The test expects next_step to end with "and do not claim the school portal is down." The production string in api/agent_mcp.py:394 omits that clause. Running pytest on tests/test_agents.py therefore reports a failure for this case.

The clause also carries the behavior this PR adds. It stops clients from reporting a school portal outage when LANIS has an internal bug. Adding it to the production string restores that guidance and makes the test pass.
