Summary

Add SoftMimicGen deformable data generation

Detailed description

Extend data generation to deformable reference objects. SoftMimicGen selects source demonstrations using nodal state and adapts end-effector trajectories through thin-plate-spline registration.

  • Register SoftMimicGen and expose it through the generation CLI.
  • Add nodal-state annotations, source-pool support, and deformable trajectory transforms.
  • Add shared reset-settling support and unit tests for the algorithm, transforms, data handling, and interfaces.

Stack layer 1/3: Core -> PhysX -> Newton. Environment examples are added by the dependent PRs.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added SoftMimicGen support for generating demonstrations in one- and two-arm tasks involving deformable objects.
    • Added deformable-object nodal data capture, transformation, and source-demo selection based on registration similarity.
    • Added configurable reset-settling steps, allowing environments to settle while others continue operating.
    • Added SoftMimicGen as a selectable dataset-generation option.
  • Documentation
    • Expanded citation guidance to include SoftMimicGen.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request adds SoftMimicGen for deformable-object tasks. It captures nodal positions, uses TPS registration for source selection and EEF-pose transformation, and exposes the algorithm through the CLI. It also adds configurable reset settling with completion futures and settled initial-state recording.

Changes: SoftMimicGen deformable-object generation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Nodal observations and episode data
autodata_interfaces/datastream/datastream.py, scripts/annotate_demos.py, autodata_core/datagen_info.py, autodata_core/pool.py, autodata_interfaces/tasks/subtask_spec.py, autodata_tests/*
Datastream returns environment-relative deformable-object nodes. Demo annotations and episode data store optional nodal positions. Task parameters and fixtures cover soft-object ingestion and pose-name mapping.
TPS registration and source selection
autodata_utils/thin_plate_spline.py, autodata_core/deformable_transforms.py, autodata_core/selection_strategy.py, autodata_tests/core/*, autodata_tests/utils/test_thin_plate_spline.py
TPS utilities fit, evaluate, and differentiate 3D transforms and compute registration cost. Deformable EEF poses use nodal registration. Registration-cost selection ranks source demos by nodal cost and skips invalid candidates.
SoftMimicGen generation and entry points
autodata_core/algorithms.py, autodata_core/data_generator.py, autodata_core/__init__.py, scripts/generate_dataset.py, README.md, autodata_tests/core/test_algorithms.py
SoftMimicGen validates rigid and deformable reference compatibility and transforms source EEF poses through the relevant path. DataGenerator passes nodal data through selection and transformation. The package, CLI, README, and registry expose the algorithm.

Environment reset settling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Reset request and settling loop
autodata_interfaces/env/reset_request.py, autodata_interfaces/env/scene_state.py, autodata_interfaces/env/isaaclab_env_interface.py, autodata_interfaces/tasks/generation_policy_spec.py, autodata_core/data_generator.py, autodata_tests/interfaces/env/*, autodata_tests/interfaces/mocks.py, autodata_tests/interfaces/tasks/test_generation_policy_spec.py
Reset requests carry completion futures. When settling steps are configured, the environment loop applies configured idle actions or zeros to resetting environments while other environments continue, records settled initial state, and completes each request. The policy defaults settling steps to zero.

Transform nodal positions into the embodiment reference frame.

get_robot_eef_pose returns adapter EEF poses without conversion. For g1_wbc_pink, those poses are controlled in the pelvis frame, while get_object_nodal_positions returns environment-relative nodes. TPS therefore fits one frame and evaluates EEF positions in another. Apply the reference-frame inverse to the nodes.

Do not complete a cancelled reset future.

If a generator is cancelled while it awaits reset completion, asyncio cancels the future. set_result(None) then raises InvalidStateError before env_reset_queue.task_done() runs. Guard completion at both Line 374 and Line 317, but always mark the request done. (docs.python.org)

instead of sending zeros action holds still for relative-pose control but in absolute-pose envs, that will not hold.

instead, can we use Isaac Lab's uses env_cfg.idle_action when the env defines one. We could check this at launch as well
