Thanks @stym06, we'd like to take this one as the camera preview (#1333 was an alternative; we're keeping yours). Two changes before a detailed review:
- Hide the HUD button when the camera is off rather than disabling it. We don't show controls that can't do anything.
- Show the real camera frame, at its recorded aspect ratio (a rounded rectangle is fine), instead of a circle. The point of the preview is checking framing, and a circle hides the edges that will end up in the recording.
Please also rebase on main (it conflicts now). For the review, add a short before/after measurement taken during a take: CPU use and dropped frames with the preview shown and hidden. I'll approve CI once I've read the updated diff.

Thanks for the update! CI is approved and running. One thing before this can be merged: the repo only accepts rebase merges, and the branch now contains a merge commit from |

Thanks again @stym06, this is shaping up nicely! One thing before we can merge: OpenScreen ships every feature on all three platforms, so the floating camera preview needs to work on Windows and Linux too, not only macOS. Could you extend it, and attach a short end-to-end screen recording per platform (macOS, Windows, Linux) showing the preview during a real recording and the exported video without it? That's what we'll use to validate it. Happy to help if you hit a platform-specific snag. |
|
Hi @stym06, just checking in on this one. The floating camera preview still needs its Windows and Linux side before we can merge, plus a rebase on main (it conflicts now). If you'd rather not do the port, say so and we'll see about taking it from here. |

Thanks @stym06 for extending this to Windows and Linux! CI is approved and running on the new head. To validate the port, could you attach the short end-to-end recordings mentioned earlier, one per platform (macOS, Windows, Linux), each showing the preview during a real recording and the exported video without it? Updating the PR title and description to cover all three platforms would help too. |

I don't have access to linux or windows for doing screen recording. Could someone help with that? |

Thanks for the Windows and Linux port, @stym06. You mentioned you don't have a Windows machine, so I tested e3c5133c9 on Windows 11 with a USB webcam. The helper and compositor were built from this head, and webcam_preview_bitmap_test passed. Recording and export work, and there are four preview issues.
Pass with real OS clicks via computer-use: preview show/hide while idle and during a take, enlarge and shrink, dragging the preview a short distance, native screen and window takes, pause/resume, restart, stop into the editor.
Pass with Playwright driving the app, on real capture: preview updates and frame orientation after the camera hands over to the helper, preview window and mailbox cleanup on a normal stop, MP4 export.
Capture exclusion, also driven by Playwright: I checked WGC and forced DXGI (OPENSCREEN_CAPTURE_BACKEND=dxgi), with the backend confirmed in the helper log. With OPENSCREEN_DISABLE_CONTENT_PROTECTION=1 as a control, the preview was detectable in the screen recording. With protection on, I found no floating preview in the sampled frames of the recording. I didn't measure the exported file.
Issues, all reproduced with real clicks:
- After cancelling an active native take, the preview doesn't return to the idle HUD, although the camera and preview still show as on. Waiting 20 seconds or toggling the preview off and on doesn't restore it. Toggling the camera off and on does.
- Hovering the preview image doesn't reveal the hide and resize buttons. They only appear once the pointer reaches one of them.
- Closing the preview from its system menu leaves the HUD showing it as on, and it takes two toggle clicks to bring it back.
- After closing and reopening at the largest size,
+stays enabled and the first-click jumps straight to the smallest size.
Worth checking on your side. These come from reading the code, and I haven't run either path:
- Linux, browser fallback: if a pending start is replaced and the new countdown is then cancelled, the early returns after
prepareCameraPreviewCapture()only tear down media, so the preview may stay unavailable. - macOS, direct display capture (not Apple's picker): if the preview is destroyed and recreated during a take, the helper's exclusion refresh still uses the window IDs supplied at startup, so the new window may end up in the recording.
Not covered on Windows: tray recovery and right-click, long drags, full-screen capture, and a window take with the preview overlapping the captured window. The Windows demo you were asked for is still open: my test takes show my desktop and camera, so I'm not attaching them.
Could you rebase onto the latest main (no merge commit, the repo only rebase-merges)? The branch has merge conflicts again.

After cancelling an active Windows native take, the preview doesn't return to the idle HUD. Toggling the preview does nothing, and toggling the camera off and on restores it. Native startup releases the renderer stream, and cancel sets recording back to false without reacquiring it, so this hook has neither preview source. Could the idle preview come back once the helper has released the camera on cancel? Restart uses the same discard path and starts the next take straight away, so it probably shouldn't reacquire there.

On Windows, right-clicking the preview and choosing Close removes the window, but the HUD still shows the preview as on and needs two toggle clicks to reopen it. This handler clears only the controller's state. Could it also keep the HUD's state in sync when the window closes?

On Windows, moving the pointer over the preview image leaves the hide and resize controls invisible. They appear only when it reaches one of the no-drag buttons. It looks like the drag region keeps .preview:hover from matching over the image. Could the controls be reachable without having to find an invisible button?

After resizing to the largest preset and reopening through the Windows system-menu close path, the controller restores that size, but sizeIndex starts at the middle preset again. + stays enabled and the first - click jumps straight to the smallest preset. Could the controls start from the restored size?
Summary
Add a floating camera preview to the recording HUD on macOS, Windows, and Linux. The preview is draggable, preserves the full camera frame when resized, and has three sizes plus show/hide controls. Its HUD control disappears when the camera is off.
Camera selection remains stable when audio preferences change on all three platforms. The branch is rebased onto
mainat5d82a0cb, with no merge commits above that base.Linux limitation: this does not provide a visible, capture-excluded preview during full-monitor recording. Acceptance of the window-recording-only behavior still needs maintainer confirmation.

Screenshots / video
The requested end-to-end demo recordings are still outstanding. Each clip must show the preview during a real recording, followed by the exported video with no floating preview baked into the screen footage.
The latest macOS smoke check covered device settings and the HUD preview control appearing/disappearing with the camera. It did not validate the separate preview window, recording exclusion, or export. Windows and Linux desktop validation has not been performed. These gaps are recorded in the manual E2E checklist.
Recording performance
The earlier macOS-only revision measured 17.5% average process-tree CPU with preview hidden and 22.3% shown, with zero native screen-writer dropped frames over that take. These were single sequential 30-second samples on macOS 26.7 / Apple M5 Pro, not a statistical benchmark. Windows mailbox and Linux runtime performance have not been measured.
