fix(recording): pick a webcam mode by frame rate before size - #1126
Conversation
chooseWebcamFormat ranked uncompressed modes by pixel count first, so a camera whose largest modes are stills-grade was driven at them. A Logitech C920 exposes YUY2 2304x1536 at 2 fps and 1920x1080 at 5 fps: the default 2160p preset picked the first, 1080p the second. The highest rate up to the target now comes before pixels; the C920 lands on 800x448 at 30 on every preset. Cameras that reach 30 fps at their best size, like the BRIO and the StreamCam, are unchanged. The source reader was also asked for NV12 with no way back. Its simple video processing only documents "Conversion from YUV to RGB-32", so a YUY2 or MJPEG source turning NV12 down is within contract, and that refusal reported webcam-unavailable. NV12 is still tried first; RGB32, which the webcam encoder also accepts, is now the fallback, and deliversNv12 follows what the reader actually accepted. Refs #1112

Summary
Two holes in the native Windows webcam setup added by
d93a2b1af(shipped in v2.0.0):chooseWebcamFormatnow takes the highest rate up to the target first, then the most pixels. The C920 lands on 800x448@30. Cameras that already reach 30 fps at their best size (BRIO, StreamCam) pick the same mode as before.MF_SOURCE_READER_ENABLE_VIDEO_PROCESSINGonly documents "Conversion from YUV to RGB-32", so a reader turning NV12 down for a YUY2/MJPEG source is within contract, and that ended inwebcam-unavailable. NV12 is still tried first; RGB32 is the fallback (the webcam encoder takes BGRA too), anddeliversNv12()reports what the reader accepted.Related issue

webcam_format_testgains a C920 case. Against the oldchooseWebcamFormatit fails:expected 800x448@30, got 2304x1536@2(2160p) andgot 1920x1080@5(1080p). With the fix, all assertions pass.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
