What and why

In a memory-off turn, _memory_correction still asked _memory_backs whether a stored memory matched the claim, so which claims got corrected showed what was stored. It now takes the turn's memory_allowed and only checks stored memory when it is true. Memory-on turns are unchanged. The incognito route with memory off and /v1 with allow_memory off both go through the same Agent.memory_allowed decision, so the one check covers both.

Closes #551

How I tested it

The new test in tests/test_memory_claims.py stores "Dr. Kulkarni" as the dentist. A normal chat leaves the Kulkarni claim alone as before. In an incognito chat with memory off, the Kulkarni and Mehta claims both get the same correction. Before the fix, the Kulkarni claim got none.

  • pytest tests/test_memory_claims.py 28 passed, tests/test_memory_off_turns.py 8 passed, tests/test_agent_loop.py 20 passed
  • ruff check sentient tests packaging clean

Real test

I did not run this against a live engine and model; the new test drives the loop with a stored fact and the incognito memory-off path.

Checklist

  • Tests added or updated, and pytest / npm run typecheck pass locally for what I touched
  • ruff check sentient tests is clean
  • docs/API.md updated if the desktop ↔ engine contract changed (no contract change)
  • A changelog entry in changes/ (changes/551.fixed.md)
  • No keys, tokens or personal data in the code, tests or screenshots

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • In chats where memory is off, replies that claim a memory was saved now receive a correction—even if the claim matches information saved in a regular chat.
    • The correction clarifies that no memory was saved during the memory-off chat. For other situations where memory is unavailable, replies with unsupported save claims also receive a correction.

Walkthrough

When memory is disallowed, the final-turn memory correction skips stored-memory checks before correcting claims that a reply saved a memory. Tests verify that matching and non-matching claims receive the same correction in memory-off cases.

Changes: Memory claim correction

Layer / File(s) Summary
Memory-off correction path
sentient/agent/loop.py, tests/test_memory_claims.py, changes/551.fixed.md
The final-turn call passes memory_allowed to _memory_correction. When memory is disallowed, the function skips the stored-memory lookup. Tests check incognito-specific and standard corrections for matching and non-matching claims, and verify that no stored-memory lookup occurs. The changelog describes the change.

Explanation

[#551] _memory_correction checks stored memory only when memory_allowed is true. Tests verify equal correction for backed and unbacked claims with memory off, no stored-memory lookup when the shared decision is false, and unchanged behavior for a backed claim with memory on.

tests/test_memory_claims.py: 2

Add a memory-off API claimed-save test.

The new test covers only incognito CLI sessions. An API-specific regression could make correction depend on stored facts without failing this test. Send matching and non-matching claims through /v1 with allow_memory off, and assert that both receive MEMORY_NOT_SAVED.

Assert that memory-off turns skip the lookup.

A regression could call _memory_backs and discard its result while both reply assertions still pass. After the memory-on turn, spy on _memory_backs and assert that the incognito turns do not call it.

Thanks for this, and welcome to Sentient! It's a small, well-placed fix: the check sits on the turn's one memory_allowed decision, so /v1 and incognito are covered by the same line. Approving. I tested it on real engines, comparing main (c166152) with this branch (17c42a2).

What was real and what was simulated. Each run used a real engine with a fresh throwaway home seeded with fictional Maya Rao memories, including "Maya's dentist is Dr. Kulkarni". /v1 went through the real openai Python client, streaming and not, and chats went through POST /api/chat. The model's words came from a small stand-in for Ollama's HTTP API, because natural models rarely produce the exact claim. Real memory_remember calls ran through the engine. I then repeated the claims on claude-code/sonnet, with no stand-in for the chat model.

Turn (scripted model) Claim main This branch
/v1, allow_memory off (streaming and not) "your dentist is Kulkarni" (stored) no correction "I haven't saved that..."
same "your dentist is Mehta" (not stored) "I haven't saved that..." "I haven't saved that..."
Incognito, memory off Kulkarni no correction incognito note
same Mehta incognito note incognito note
/v1, allow_memory on Kulkarni / Mehta none / corrected none / corrected
Normal chat Kulkarni / Mehta none / corrected none / corrected
Incognito, memory on Kulkarni / Mehta none / incognito note none / incognito note
Normal chat, claim backed by an earlier real save "your physiotherapist is Banerjee" none none
Normal chat, a different name "your physiotherapist is Iyer" corrected corrected
Real save in the turn, normal chat none, fact stored none, fact stored
Real save in the turn, /v1 memory off none, fact waits in Review none, fact waits in Review

So the yes/no signal from #551 is there on main and gone on the branch, and memory-on turns match main in every row. The stand-in's request log also shows that no memory-off turn had the stored dentist in its prompt.

On claude-code/sonnet:

  • Asked to repeat each claim in an incognito chat with memory off, main left Kulkarni alone and corrected Mehta. The branch corrected both.
  • A plain turn answered normally on both ("42").
  • A natural "please remember..." saved the fact and got no correction on both.
  • On /v1 Sonnet refused to repeat the sentence in some runs, so those turns don't compare cleanly. The scripted /v1 rows above are the evidence for that path.

Tests and checks:

  • Both new tests fail on main and pass here.
  • tests/test_memory_claims.py, tests/test_memory_off_turns.py and tests/memory: 398 passed.
  • ruff check sentient tests packaging is clean.
  • CI and the CLA are green.
  • There are no unresolved review threads. CodeRabbit's two nitpicks are covered: your second commit added the lookup spy, and the memory_allowed false test plus the /v1 runs above cover the API path.

I didn't push anything to your branch. Thanks again, and I hope to see more from you!

Merged. Thank you @G26karthik, and welcome! A small, exact fix for a subtle leak, and the lookup spy in the test was a nice touch. If you'd like another one, #554 is close by in the same check.

Thank you @itsskofficial, and thanks for the welcome and the careful testing. I'll take #554, I was planning to pick it up next.
