I've fixed #509. On Ollama 0.9.0, qwen3:8b did ask for the screenshot. The engine was dropping that request, so it looked like an empty answer.

On Ollama 0.9.0, a qwen3:8b helper asked to open a page and take a screenshot stopped after browser_open. The model did ask for browser_screenshot, but 0.9.0 sends a call with no arguments without an id, and LiteLLM's stream_chunk_builder drops such a call. The round then looked like an empty answer. Calls with arguments get an id from 0.9.0, and Ollama 0.40.9 always sends one, which is why it only showed up on the older version.

The provider now gives a streamed tool call that arrives without an id one of its own before the stream is assembled. Ids from the model and arguments that arrive in pieces are unchanged.

Closes #509

Real test

Commit 1447e60b with this fix, Windows, RTX 5070 Laptop (8 GB), ollama_chat/qwen3:8b (500a1f067a9f), own test homes, real browser, local page. Goal: "Open http://127.0.0.1:/test.html in the browser and take a screenshot of the page."

Before After
Ollama 0.9.0, helper ×8 screenshot 0/8, 2 empty answers each 8/8, no empty answers
Ollama 0.40.9, helper ×8 8/8 8/8
Ollama 0.9.0, chat over REST ×3 — screenshot in every turn, no empty answers

The raw stream on 0.9.0 showed browser_screenshot with id=None, args='{}', and stream_chunk_builder returned tool_calls=[].

How I tested it

  • tests/test_stream_tool_calls.py: a no-argument call without an id is kept (it fails without the fix), and existing ids and arguments in pieces are unchanged.
  • Full engine suite: 2874 passed, 3 skipped. ruff check: clean.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed an issue where screenshot requests from local models could be dropped when using older Ollama versions, including requests sent without an ID after opening a page. Screenshot requests are now retained during streaming. Requests that already include an ID and send their arguments across multiple streamed parts continue to be handled correctly. This improves support for screenshot requests across different local model and Ollama versions.

Walkthrough

The provider now assigns generated IDs to streamed tool calls that have a function name but no ID. Tests cover this behavior and verify that supplied IDs and arguments split across deltas are preserved.

Explanation

Issue #509 requires a qwen3:8b helper to open a local page and take a screenshot in a real run. LiteLLMProvider.stream now calls name_tool_calls before stream assembly. The helper assigns an ID to a streamed tool call that has a function name but no ID. The regression tests verify that the no-argument browser_screenshot call is retained and that supplied IDs and split arguments remain unchanged. The PR also reports successful real runs on Ollama 0.9.0 and 0.40.9.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes are limited to the #509 streaming fix, focused regression tests, and the related changelog entry. The provider preserves model-supplied IDs and partial arguments. No unrelated product behavior is shown.

A rabbit watched the tool calls stream,
A nameless call received its ID.
Split arguments joined across the flow,
Supplied IDs stayed as they were.
The screenshot call now holds its place,
And bunny ears nod at the trace.

L2218: ### Streaming responses
L2219:
L2220: Certain endpoints stream responses as JSON objects. Streaming can be disabled by providing `{"stream": false}` for these endpoints.
L2221:
L2222: ## Generate a completion
L2223:
L2224: ```
L2225:
L2226: POST /api/generate
L2227:
L2228: ```
L2229:
L2230: Generate a response for a given prompt with a provided model. This is a streaming endpoint, so there will be a series of responses. The final response object will include statistics and additional data from the request.
L2231: ### Parameters
L2232:
L2233: - `model`: (required) the [model name](#model-names)
L2234:
L2235: - `prompt`: the prompt to generate a response for
L2236:
L2237: - `suffix`: the text after the model response
L2238:
L2239: - `images`: (optional) a list of base64-encoded images (for multimodal models such as `llava`)
L2240:
L2241: - `think`: (for thinking models) should the model think before responding? Can be a boolean or a thinking level (`"low"`, `"medium"`, `"high"`, or `"max"`).
L2242:
L2243: Advanced parameters (optional):
L2244: - `format`: the format to return a response in. Format can be `json` or a JSON schema
L2245:
L2246: - `options`: additional model parameters listed in the documentation for the [Modelfile](./modelfile.mdx#valid-parameters-and-values) such as `temperature`
L2247:
L2248: - `system`: system message to (overrides what is defined in the `Modelfile`)
L2249:
L2250: - `template`: the prompt template to use (overrides what is defined in the `Modelfile`)
L2260: #### JSON mode
L2261:
L2262: Enable JSON mode by setting the `format` parameter to `json`. This will structure the response as a valid JSON object. See the JSON mode [example](#request-json-mode) below.
L2263:
L2264: > [!IMPORTANT]
L2265:
L2266: > It's important to instruct the model to use JSON in the `prompt`. Otherwise, the model may generate large amounts whitespace.

L158:
L159: ### What is the issue?
L160:
L161: When a model returns multiple tool calls in a single streaming response via the OpenAI-compatible API (`/v1/chat/completions`), all tool call chunks have `index: 0` instead of incrementing indices (0, 1, 2...).
L162:
L163: This is different from 【72†#7881】 which was about the `index` field being missing entirely (fixed in v0.4.7). The field is now present but always `0`.

L207: ### Impact
L208:
L209: The Vercel AI SDK (`@ai-sdk/openai-compatible`) uses `index` as the array key to track tool calls. When all indices are `0`, the second tool call either gets merged into the first or silently dropped, causing 100% failure rate on any task requiring multiple tool calls in one response.

L212:
L213:   * Ollama 0.20.2 (local) and 0.20.4 (remote)
L214:   * Models: qwen2.5-coder:7b, qwen3-coder:30b, gemma4:e2b, gemma4:e4b
L215: * Also occurs when going through LiteLLM (`ollama_chat/` backend)

### What happened?

⏳ Context: Streaming tool calls with Ollama was not supported until recently (cf. #11104 and #11171).

⚠️ Current situation: Streaming tool calls technically work in that you can see them in the streamed chunks, but it is currently not possible to reconstruct the full model response including the tool call with `response = litellm.stream_chunk_builder(chunks)`.

🔍 The root cause is that `ChunkProcessor.get_combined_tool_content` silently drops all tool calls because Ollama does not return tool call ids as part of its response (cf. line 154 below):

More actions

Finally found the root cause. If a function has no parameters, litellm doesn't generate an id for it:

litellm/litellm/llms/ollama/chat/transformation.py

Lines 455 to 461 in b8bdf98

| if function_args is not None and len(function_args) > 0:
| is_function_call_complete = self._is_function_call_complete(
| function_args
| )
| if is_function_call_complete:
| tool_call["id"] = str(uuid.uuid4())
|

As a result, tool_calls without an id are ignored by the streaming_chunk_builder:

litellm/litellm/litellm_core_utils/streaming_chunk_builder_utils.py

Lines 154 to 160 in b8bdf98

| if tool_call_data["id"] and tool_call_data["name"]:
| combined_arguments = "".join(tool_call_data["arguments"]) or "{}"
| tool_calls_list.append(
| ChatCompletionMessageToolCall(
| id=tool_call_data["id"],
| function=Function(
| arguments=combined_arguments,

I'm not sure why ids aren't generated for functions without parameters — this limitation doesn't seem necessary.

### What happened?

With `ollama_chat/*` + streaming + tools, every tool call delta is emitted with `index=0`. When a model emits 2+ tool calls in one turn, any client that accumulates `arguments` by `index` (the OpenAI streaming convention) merges them into a single malformed tool call:

    `{"path": "a.rs"}{"path": "b.rs"}
    `

That string then goes into the client's conversation history as `tool_calls[0].function.arguments`. On the next turn it is sent back to the proxy, where `OllamaChatConfig.transform_request` calls a bare `json.loads()` on it (`ollama/chat/transformation.py#L268`) and raises. The proxy surfaces it as a 500:

    `litellm.APIConnectionError: Extra data: line 1 column 29 (char 28)
      File "/app/.venv/lib/python3.13/site-packages/litellm/main.py", line 5522, in completion
        response = _complete_ollama_chat(_dispatch_ctx)
    `

Two things make this painful to diagnose:

  1. The error surfaces one turn after the turn that corrupted the history.
  2. It is reported as `APIConnectionError` (unmapped exceptions fall through to it), so it reads like a network problem with the Ollama server. It is not — it is a `json.JSONDecodeError`.

Notably Ollama itself gets the index right. It sends one tool call per chunk with the correct index nested at `function.index` (`0`, then `1`).
    if tool_calls is not None and isinstance(tool_calls, list):
        self.tool_calls = []
        current_index = 0                       # resets on every chunk
        for tool_call in tool_calls:
            if isinstance(tool_call, dict):
                if tool_call.get("index", None) is None:
                    tool_call["index"] = current_index
                    current_index += 1

Ollama tool calls carry no top-level `index` (theirs is at `function.index`), so each chunk's single tool call gets `index = 0`.

This only shows up when tool calls arrive in separate chunks. Two tool calls inside one chunk correctly enumerate to `0, 1` — which is presumably why it went unnoticed.

`litellm/llms/ollama/chat/transformation.py` never references `index` at all, so nothing downstream corrects it.

### Suggested fix

Preferred — lift Ollama's own index in `OllamaChatCompletionResponseIterator.chunk_parser`, before the `Delta` is built:

    for tool_call in tool_calls:
        fn_index = tool_call.get("function", {}).get("index")
        if fn_index is not None and tool_call.get("index") is None:
            tool_call["index"] = fn_index

Verified: this yields `index = [0, 1]` and the two tool calls stay separate.

Fallback for Ollama builds that omit `function.index` — `OllamaChatCompletionResponseIterator` is instantiated per stream and already holds cross-chunk state …[truncated]</excerpt>

Preferred — lift Ollama's own index in `OllamaChatCompletionResponseIterator.chunk_parser`, before the `Delta` is built:

    for tool_call in tool_calls:
        fn_index = tool_call.get("function", {}).get("index")
        if fn_index is not None and tool_call.get("index") is None:
            tool_call["index"] = fn_index

Verified: this yields `index = [0, 1]` and the two tool calls stay separate.

Fallback for Ollama builds that omit `function.index` — `OllamaChatCompletionResponseIterator` is instantiated per stream and already holds cross-chunk state (`started_reasoning_content`), so it can keep a running c…[truncated]</excerpt>

<excerpt>citeturn0search2 [wordlim: 200] Published: 6 months ago; Crawled: yesterday; When a model returns multiple tool calls in a single streaming response via the OpenAI-compatible API (`/v1/chat/completions`), all tool call chunks have `index: 0` instead of incrementing indices (0, 1, 2...). ... `data: {...,"tool_calls":[{"id":"abc123","function":{"arguments":"{\"filePath\":\"hello.py\",...}","name":"file_write"},"type":"function","index":0}]} ... * Also occurs when going through LiteLLM (`ollama_chat/` backend) ... model/parsers: fix missing parallel tool call indices (ollama#15467)
    data: {...,"tool_calls":[{...,"index":1}]} # second tool call
    `

Per OpenAI's streaming spec, `index` should enumerate tool calls sequentially.

### Impact

The Vercel AI SDK (`@ai-sdk/openai-compatible`) uses `index` as the array key to track tool calls. When all indices are `0`, the second tool call either gets merged into the first or silently dropped, causing 100% failure rate on any task requiring multiple tool calls in one response.

Tested with:

  * Ollama 0.20.2 (local) and 0.20.4 (remote)
  * Models: qwen2.5-coder:7b, qwen3-coder:30b, gemma4:e2b, gemma4:e4b
  * Also occurs when going through LiteLLM (`ollama_chat/` backend)

### Workaround

HTTP proxy that reassigns correct sequential indices based on unique tool call `id` values: opencode-bench/fix-proxy

### Environment

  * OS: Linux (DGX Spark) + Windows 11
  * Ollama: 0.20.2 / 0.20.4
  * GPU: RTX 4090 / Grace CPU

Preserve distinct tool-call indexes before stream assembly.

name_tool_calls gives each ID-less named call a different ID, but LiteLLM groups calls by (choice index, tool-call index), not by ID. LiteLLM v1.104.0 does not assign a top-level index in its Ollama stream parser, and parameterless Ollama calls can remain ID-less. Ollama supports parallel tool calls, so two such calls can both use the builder's default index 0. The builder then joins their arguments and emits one call with the last name and ID.

Normalize distinct indexes at this boundary, and reuse each index for that call's argument-only fragments. Generating IDs alone does not prevent the merge.

Merging the latest main into this branch with the /update bot above (it's 5 commits behind and has no conflicts). This is a chore we would do anyway, and it also helps us check #473: whether the bot can update a branch in a contributor's fork. Your change itself is untouched.

Hi @n-o-t-mugen, thank you for chasing this down to the real cause. It's a great find. I tested it on this machine's Ollama 0.9.0 with ollama_chat/qwen3:8b (500a1f067a9f), using real engines with fresh data folders, a headless browser and a local page.

It reproduces on main, and the branch fixes it.

main (aad6b4b1) this branch (2a6e58e6)
Stream probe: one browser_screenshot call with {} Ollama sends {"function": {"name": "browser_screenshot", "arguments": {}}} with no id, and the provider returns [] [('browser_screenshot', 'call_258169055694', {})]
delegate_tasks helper, "open the page and save a screenshot" (foreground runs) 1 of 2 reproduced #509: browser_open only, then "I couldn't put together a full answer…". The other run passed only because qwen called browser_screenshot with a url argument, which gets an id. 3 of 3 took the screenshot. Two of them called browser_screenshot with {}, exactly the call main drops. 4 PNGs saved in the files folder.
Normal chat tool call (current_datetime) works, ids unique

(Some runs had the chat model start a background delegate_task instead, which I left out.) The unit tests pass, and tests/test_provider*.py still passes (19). CI is green and the CLA is signed.

One thing before it merges: the open CodeRabbit thread on name_tool_calls is real, and it shows up on this same Ollama. Ollama 0.9.0 sends parallel tool calls in separate chunks, with no index. LiteLLM's Delta numbers calls from 0 inside each chunk, so every call lands on index 0, and stream_chunk_builder merges them into one (last name, last id, the arguments of all of them). Here is what the provider returned from the live stream:

qwen's parallel calls (raw Ollama chunks) main branch
browser_screenshot {} + get_battery {} [] [('get_battery', {})]: the screenshot is silently lost
get_weather {"city": "Pune"} + browser_screenshot {} [('browser_screenshot', {'city': 'Pune'})] the same: the wrong tool gets the other call's arguments
get_weather Pune + get_weather Mysuru (offline replay of the same chunks) one call, Mysuru only the same

In the engine I saw it too. I asked for two memory searches at once ("dentist" and "reading list"). Only one memory_recall {"query": "reading list"} ran, yet the reply said it had searched both.

The merging was already there before this PR, so this isn't something you broke. But it's the same boundary and the same Ollama, and with ids alone a two-call round now keeps one call and drops the other without a trace, which is the #509 symptom again. Could you give each new call its own index in name_tool_calls too? A sketch that keeps OpenAI-style streams as they are:

  • Keep a small per-stream state: a map from the provider's index to ours, plus the next free index.
  • A fragment with a name starts a call. If its index was already started by an earlier named fragment, give it the next free index, and remember the mapping.
  • A fragment without a name (argument pieces) takes the mapped index of its original index.

Then a test like your first one, with two id-less calls in two chunks (browser_screenshot {} and get_battery {}, and a with-arguments pair), asserting two separate calls with the right names and arguments. Once that's in, please reply on the CodeRabbit thread and resolve it, since the merge queue needs every thread resolved.

Everything else looks good, and the single-call fix is verified end to end. Thanks again!

Preserve a distinct index for each streamed tool call.

name_tool_calls assigns an ID, but it does not assign or preserve a tool-call index. If two ID-less calls arrive in separate deltas, litellm.stream_chunk_builder can merge their arguments under one index. LiteLLM reports this failure mode for missing IDs and repeated indexes. (github.com)

If the resolved LiteLLM version has this behavior, track a stable index per call and reuse it for later argument-only fragments. This is the same unresolved concern from the previous review.

Hi @n-o-t-mugen, I merged the latest main into your branch so it's up to date: merge commit c4cb5651 (no conflicts, your change is untouched). After the merge, ruff check sentient tests packaging is clean and the 19 tests in tests/test_stream_tool_calls.py and tests/test_provider_errors.py pass locally. You don't need to do anything for this; any earlier review points still stand where they are.
