What and why

Closes #463.

Saving "Maya Rao's sister Priya lives in Mumbai." replaced the user's own "Maya Rao moved from Pune to Bengaluru." The cause was fact_subjects, which reads who a fact is about. It stopped at the first name word, so "Maya Rao's sister Priya" came out as {"maya"}. The sister's home then counted as a correction of Maya's (corrects fact 1, updated without asking the model). The same misreading also let the model's UPDATE through the candidate filter and the update guard, because both use same_subject.

The changes, all in sentient/memory/facts.py and scripts.py:

  • fact_subjects

    • It reads a full name up to the word that owns something: "Maya Rao's younger sister" is {"maya's sister"}.
    • "My friend Arjun" now works when the user has a full name. Before, with "Maya Rao" set as the user's name, it came out empty, which counts as "unclear", and an unclear subject matches anyone.
    • "Her colleague Ravi" is {"someone's colleague", "ravi"}: a colleague of anyone, but never a person herself.
    • Appositives work: "Priya, Maya's sister, ..." is {"priya", "maya's sister"}.
    • The list of relation words is longer (neighbour, coworker, niece, the in-laws and more), and a modifier is allowed before a relation (best, younger, elder...).
  • Hindi. devanagari_subjects handles a surname before की ("माया राव की बहन" is {"माया's sister"}) and "उसकी बहन" ("her sister", a relation of anyone).

  • same_subject.

    • The user's first name now counts as the user: "I moved..." matches "Maya lives..." when the user is "Maya Rao".
    • A someone's <relation> subject matches the same relation for any owner, and never a plain person.
  • New same_person. Both facts clearly name a subject, and it is the same one. The two updates decided in code without the model now require it:

    • the correction rule (correction_of), which covers home, job, relationship and diet;
    • the new-home rule (_residence_peer).

    A "her sister" alias doesn't count here, and a namesake of the user ("Maya Singh" when the user is "Maya Rao") keeps her full name. The guard on a model UPDATE adds the fact instead when the words it would store hold "her sister" (even "her sister Priya") and are not clearly about the same person as the fact it would replace.
    A fact with no clear subject, such as "She moved to Delhi", is left to the model, which only sees facts about the same subject.

  • correction_of.

    • It no longer counts the user's surname as a lost value.
    • An old fact's own replaced value no longer counts either ("moved from Pune to Bengaluru" now only states Bengaluru).
    • Without both of these, "Maya moved to Mumbai" could not correct "Maya Rao moved from Pune to Bengaluru."

docs/API.md (the memory-save section) now says this. There is a changelog entry in changes/463.fixed.md.

How I tested it

  • New file tests/memory/test_cross_person.py with 48 tests:
    • who a fact is about, in 12 phrasings;
    • Hindi with a surname and with a pronoun;
    • cross-person pairs that must not be corrections, with old facts "Maya Rao moved from Pune to Bengaluru." and "Maya lives in Bengaluru.";
    • "Maya moved to Mumbai" and "I moved to Mumbai" still correct the home;
    • "her sister" matches only the same relation;
    • end to end through FactMemory.remember, with an embedder that scores every fact as identical and a model that answers UPDATE on Maya's home anyway:
      • the sister and the friend are ADDed, Maya's facts stay unchanged, and they are not shown to the model;
      • Maya's own move UPDATEs her home, and her sister's home stays;
      • job, diet and relationship facts about someone else are ADDed, and "Maya got a job at Google" still UPDATEs her job;
      • the Hindi sister fact is ADDed.
  • On main's code, 17 of these tests fail. With this change they all pass.
  • Full suite: 2644 passed, 2 skipped (after the third review round). ruff check sentient tests packaging is clean.

Real test

Each run used an engine from this branch on its own fresh SENTIENT_HOME, with a random token, on port 8787, and user_name "Maya Rao". Every run held the Ollama lock, with a 13-minute hard deadline and a watchdog that stops the engine by PID. Embeddings came from ollama/nomic-embed-text.

1. The bug on main (fa5720f, REST, ollama_chat/qwen3:8b). Same result as the issue:

POST /api/memories "Maya Rao's sister Priya lives in Mumbai." -> UPDATE #1 (previous: 'Maya Rao moved from Pune to Bengaluru.')
INFO CUD for "Maya Rao's sister Priya lives in Mumbai.": corrects fact 1, updated without asking the model

2. This branch, REST, ollama_chat/qwen3:8b deciding. Maya's own facts were #1 "Maya Rao moved from Pune to Bengaluru.", #2 "Maya works at Infosys." and #3 "Maya is vegetarian."

"Maya Rao's sister Priya lives in Mumbai." -> ADD #4 (CUD: facts [1, 2, 3] are about someone else, not offered)
'My friend Arjun moved to Delhi.' -> ADD #5 (facts [1, 4] ... not offered)
'Her colleague Ravi lives in Chennai.'       -> ADD #6   (facts [1, 2, 3, 4, 5] ... not offered)
"Maya's husband Dev works at Google."        -> ADD #7   (facts [1, 2, 3, 4, 6] ... not offered)
"Maya's brother Kabir eats fish every week." -> ADD #8   (facts [2, 3, 4, 7] ... not offered)
'माया राव की बहन प्रिया पुणे में रहती है।'          -> UPDATE #4 "Maya Rao's sister Priya lives in Pune." (the sister's own fact, by the model)
RESULT: Maya's own memories unchanged: True
'Maya moved to Mumbai.' -> UPDATE #1 (previous: 'Maya Rao moved from Pune to Bengaluru.') corrects fact 1, updated without asking the model
'Maya got a job at Google.' -> UPDATE #2 (previous: 'Maya works at Infosys.') corrects fact 2, updated without asking the model

3. This branch, chat over WS /ws on claude-code/sonnet (fast role claude-code/haiku). Sonnet wrote exactly the fact from the issue:

chat> Please remember: my sister Priya lives in Mumbai.
   memory_remember {"fact": "Maya Rao's sister Priya lives in Mumbai."} -> ADD 4   (facts [1, 2, 3] ... not offered)
chat> Also remember that my friend Arjun just moved to Delhi. -> ADD 5 "Maya's friend Arjun just moved to Delhi."
chat> Remember this too: my husband Dev works at Google. -> ADD 6 "Maya Rao's husband Dev works at Google."
RESULT: Maya's own memories unchanged: True
chat> Please remember: I moved from Bengaluru to Mumbai last week.
   memory_remember {"fact": "Maya Rao moved from Bengaluru to Mumbai in October 2026."}
   -> UPDATE 1, previous 'Maya Rao moved from Pune to Bengaluru.' (corrects fact 1, updated without asking the model)

Claude Code refuses the add/update/skip decision because that call runs in the background, so the log shows CUD decision failed, defaulting to ADD. That is the existing behaviour, and the subject checks above don't depend on the model.

4. This branch, chat over WS /ws on ollama_chat/qwen3:8b (primary and fast):

memory_remember "Priya, the user's sister, lives in Mumbai" -> ADD 4 (facts [1, 2, 3] ... not offered)
memory_remember "Arjun moved to Delhi." -> ADD 5
memory_remember "Dev works at Google." -> ADD 6
RESULT: Maya's own memories unchanged: True
memory_remember "Maya Rao moved from Bengaluru to Mumbai last week." -> UPDATE 1 (previous 'Maya Rao moved from Pune to Bengaluru.')

5. After the review rounds, REST, ollama_chat/qwen3:8b. Maya's facts were the same, plus #4 "Maya's sister lives in Pune."

After 560e9c3, the code no longer counts "her sister" as anyone's sister, and it treats a namesake of the user as someone else. qwen3:8b itself still chose UPDATE:

'Her sister lives in Delhi.' -> UPDATE #4 "Maya's sister lives in Pune." (the model's choice, not the code's)
'Maya Singh moved to Chennai.' -> ADD #5 (facts [1, 2, 3, 4] are about someone else, not offered)

After the third commit, the guard on the model's UPDATE needs the stored words to say whose relative it is:

'Her sister lives in Delhi.' -> ADD #5 (CUD UPDATE of 4 kept as ADD for 'Her sister lives in Delhi.' (about something else))
'Maya Singh moved to Chennai.' -> ADD #6
Maya's home "Maya Rao moved from Pune to Bengaluru." and #4 "Maya's sister lives in Pune." unchanged

All engines were stopped, the lock was released, and the test homes were deleted.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Facts about relatives, friends, and colleagues stay separate from your own memories, so another person’s home, job, diet, or relationships won’t overwrite your information.
    • Updates to your own facts, such as moving to a new home, continue to replace outdated details when they clearly refer to you.
    • Corrections are applied only when both facts clearly concern the same person and subject. Ambiguous references are handled more cautiously, and details already covered by an existing fact are not added again.

"Maya Rao's sister Priya lives in Mumbai." replaced "Maya Rao moved from
Pune to Bengaluru.": the subject reader stopped at "Maya", so the sister's
home counted as a correction of Maya's. It now reads a full name up to the
word that owns something, "my friend Arjun" with a full user name, "her
colleague" (anyone's colleague, never a person herself), appositives and
more relation words, and the Hindi "X Y की बहन" and "उसकी बहन".

The corrections and the new-home rule decided in code now need both facts
to clearly name the same person, so the candidate filter and the model's
update guard keep facts about other people apart. A correction no longer
counts the user's surname or an old fact's "from Pune" as a lost value.

📝 Walkthrough

Memory subject parsing and correction matching now distinguish the user’s facts from facts about other people. Tests cover English and Hindi relationships, cross-person facts, and updates to the user’s own memories.

Changes: Memory subject matching

Layer / File(s) Summary
Parse named and relational subjects
sentient/memory/facts.py, sentient/memory/scripts.py, tests/memory/test_cross_person.py
Subject parsing recognizes additional relationship terms, named owners, and pronoun-owned relationships in English and Hindi.
Require matching people for corrections
sentient/memory/facts.py, tests/memory/test_cross_person.py
Correction and residence matching require identifiable subjects. Correction comparisons also exclude user-name tokens and explicitly replaced wording. CUD updates with owner-unknown relations are retained only when the rewritten content identifies the same person.
Validate memory updates and document rules
tests/memory/test_cross_person.py, docs/API.md, changes/463.fixed.md
Tests cover adding another person’s facts without changing the user’s facts, and updating the user’s facts for clear corrections. The API documentation and change note describe these rules.

…updated in code

"Her sister" names no owner, so the corrections and the new-home rule decided
without the model no longer count it as anyone's sister; it still counts by
a name it shares. "Maya Singh" keeps her full name when the user is
"Maya Rao", so a namesake's move never replaces the user's home.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Require a same-person check for model-proposed replacement content.

The changed alias match at sentient/memory/facts.py:398 intentionally keeps “Her sister” and “Maya's sister” available for model disambiguation. However, the UPDATE branch validates both values with same_thing, which delegates subject identity to broad same_subject matching. A model response that returns UPDATE with “Her sister lives in Delhi.” can therefore overwrite “Maya's sister lives in Pune.”.

Suggested fix
         if matched and not (
- same_thing(fact, matched, user) and same_thing(content, matched, user)
+                same_person(content, matched, user)
+                and same_thing(fact, matched, user)
+                and same_thing(content, matched, user)
                 and not says_something_else(fact, matched, user)
             ):

This preserves model disambiguation when the model returns replacement content that explicitly identifies the same person.

A model UPDATE that would store "Her sister lives in Delhi." over "Maya's
sister lives in Pune." is added instead. The model can still settle it by
naming her in what it stores ("Maya's sister lives in Delhi.").

@coderabbitai On the outside-diff Major (a model-proposed replacement needs the same person): fixed in b067893, in a narrower form than suggested. The UPDATE guard now adds the fact instead when the words the model would store are only about "her sister" / "his colleague" / "उसकी बहन" and don't clearly name the same person as the matched fact (only_relation_of_someone plus same_person). It does not require same_person for every update, because an unclear subject ("She moved to Delhi") is left to the model by design (#339). Test: test_the_model_must_name_whose_relation_it_updates. In a real qwen3:8b run the model's UPDATE is now logged as CUD UPDATE of 4 kept as ADD for 'Her sister lives in Delhi.'.

@itsskofficial Thanks for clarifying. The narrower guard addresses the relation-only replacement case without requiring same_person for every model UPDATE.

I checked the guard and regression test:

  • The guard checks the model’s stored content. If it names only an unspecified-owner relation, the UPDATE becomes ADD unless same_person succeeds.
  • test_the_model_must_name_whose_relation_it_updates covers both outcomes: “Her sister” preserves the existing fact, while “Maya’s sister” permits UPDATE.

I inspected the code but did not run the tests. My earlier recommendation was too broad for ambiguous pronoun subjects such as “She moved to Delhi,” which remain model-decided by design under #339.

Learning: In Sentient's Python memory code, sentient/memory/facts.py intentionally leaves ambiguous pronoun subjects such as "She moved to Delhi" to the model under #339. Do not require same_person for every model-proposed UPDATE. The UPDATE guard uses only_relation_of_someone on the model's stored content and requires same_person for relation-only wording with an unspecified owner, such as "her sister", "his colleague", or "उसकी बहन"; otherwise it keeps the incoming fact as ADD. The model can permit UPDATE by naming the owner in the stored wording. tests/memory/test_cross_person.py::test_the_model_must_name_whose_relation_it_updates covers these two outcomes.

Learning: In Sentient's Python memory code, sentient/memory/facts.py::fact_subjects intentionally retains first-name aliases for non-user people so that references such as "Ravi Kumar" and "Ravi" can match for corrections and dreaming. Preserve a multiword name when it shares the configured user's first name but differs from the configured user's full name, such as "Maya Singh" versus user "Maya Rao". Do not require full-name aliases for all non-user people.

…on to update

The model's update guard now asks for the same person whenever the words it
would store hold a relation of an unnamed owner, even when they also name the
relative.

Reject distinct named siblings as the same person.

fact_subjects gives both facts the shared alias maya's sister. same_person therefore returns true even though one fact names Anika and the other names Priya. correction_of can then return the incoming fact, and _residence_peer can select the stored fact because both facts describe a residence and contain new details. The update path can overwrite Anika's stored residence with Priya's.

Review comment at @sentient/memory/facts.py around lines 403 - 413:
Update same_person so distinct explicit person names cannot match solely through
a shared possessive alias: compare named aliases from both facts with
names_match and return false when both sides have names but none match, then
preserve the existing _aliases_match behavior for other cases.

Merges main (existence-master#471 rewrote fact_subjects since this branch was opened, and
added sentient/memory/scripts.py's devanagari_subjects, existence-master#339/existence-master#351/existence-master#463) and
answers every point of @itsskofficial's review:

1. Words starting with a digit or symbol: _NAME_WORD_RE still tokenizes a
   bare year ("2021") so it keeps its place for the preposition check below,
   but isupper() is false for a digit either way, so it's never read as a
   name - and is now explicitly skipped rather than aborting the scan, so
   "In 2021 Kabir moved to Delhi." still finds Kabir.
2. A place after a preposition: a capitalized word right after "in", "to",
   "from", "at", "after"... is never read as the subject, so "the trip to
   Goa, Kabir ..." finds Kabir, not Goa.
3. Scripts without capitals: fact_subjects no longer guesses at non-English
   text (reverted to the main behavior - empty, same as "She moved to
   Delhi."). profile_fact now calls subject_aliases instead, which already
   dispatches a Devanagari fact to scripts.devanagari_subjects - the
   existing, tested, narrow (first word, Hindi-specific skip list) reader -
   rather than reinventing a cruder version of it.
4. The default embedding model: embedding_attribute_families no longer
   checks a fixed similarity floor (a Hindi fact scored 0.44-0.49 against
   every family alike against nomic-embed-text, well under the old 0.78).
   It compares the best-scoring family against the runner-up instead
   (memory.family_margin, default 0.02), which needs no calibration to a
   given model's noise floor.
5. Speed: profile_fact_async takes an optional ``vector`` - the fact's own
   embedding, already stored - and reuses it instead of embedding the text
   again when its dimension matches the prototypes'. contradiction_pairs
   passes each fact's stored vector through.
6. Embedding failures: profile_fact_async now catches embedding errors and
   falls back to the keyword-only profile instead of failing the whole
   contradiction step.
7. Docs: updated the Dreams section and changes/95.fixed.md for the above
   (already added by the maintainer's chore commit on this branch; adjusted
   the family-matching sentence to describe the margin, not a threshold).

New tests cover digit-leading and preposition-following words with two
different people each (so a shared placeholder subject would show up as a
false pair), the embedding margin's wiring, vector reuse, and the
embedding-failure fallback. Full suite: 338/338 in tests/memory, ruff clean.
