Summary

Align MXC's default admission settings with its actual capabilities so default MXC gateways can create sandboxes without manual admission overrides. Explicit operator settings are still honored & take precedence.

Related Issue

3560

Changes

  • Default MXC caller driver config to enabled because every MXC workload requires a command.
  • Disable MXC resource-label admission by default because host filesystem grants have no trusted label resolver.
  • Preserve explicit admission settings including rejection of host filesystem grants.
  • Align gateway policy derivation with the MXC driver defaults, including partial resource_admission configuration.
  • Update MXC lifecycle and gateway configuration tests.
  • Document the MXC-specific defaults in architecture, driver, gateway, compute-driver, and CLI skill documentation.

Testing

  • mise run pre-commit passes
  • Unit tests added/updated
  • E2E tests added/updated (if applicable) - not applicable

Checklist

  • Follows Conventional Commits
  • Commits are signed off (DCO)
  • Architecture docs updated (if applicable)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Behavior Changes

    • MXC allows the caller-supplied command configuration required by its workloads by default.
    • Resource-label admission is disabled by default for MXC. If enabled, sandbox creation with host filesystem grants is rejected.
    • MXC defaults differ from those of other compute drivers.
  • Documentation

    • Updated MXC setup guidance and examples to describe these defaults and their effects.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

MXC now allows caller-supplied driver configuration by default and disables resource-label admission by default. Server configuration applies these MXC-specific defaults while preserving explicit operator settings. When admission is enabled, MXC sandbox creation rejects host filesystem grants.

Changes

MXC configuration and admission

Layer / File(s) Summary
MXC configuration defaults
crates/openshell-driver-mxc/src/driver.rs, crates/openshell-server/src/compute/driver_config.rs
The MXC driver accepts optional enabled and required_labels admission settings. MXC defaults allow caller driver configuration and disable resource admission. Server tests cover defaults, explicit overrides, and partial configuration.
Admission behavior and guidance
crates/openshell-driver-mxc/src/driver.rs, architecture/compute-runtimes.md, crates/openshell-driver-mxc/README.md, docs/reference/*, skills/openshell-cli/SKILL.md
Driver tests verify rejection of sandbox creation when admission is enabled and update lifecycle tests to use default configuration. Architecture and user documentation describe MXC defaults and admission behavior.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 3449c

Default MXC gateways can now create sandboxes with caller-supplied commands and host filesystem grants without resource-label approval. Sandbox policy mapping and explicit operator restrictions remain in place, but the default grants a broader capability to permitted sandbox creators.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Default MXC sandbox creation no longer requires operator-owned resource-label approval for host filesystem grants. Permitted sandbox creators can reach the policy-mapped host-grant path without that independent admission control; the effective exposure depends on upstream authorization and the paths creators may request.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed default affects gateways selecting MXC and callers permitted to create sandboxes there. Potential host exposure is the filesystem access conveyed by a sandbox's mapped grants, not an established unauthenticated or cross-gateway access path.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A caller able to submit an MXC sandbox policy and command can now reach host-grant execution on a default gateway without resource-label approval. The available evidence does not establish that such a caller can obtain unauthorized host paths or bypass upstream authorization.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Caller driver JSON and external-resource admission remain separate controls. The gateway checks the former, the MXC driver validates and maps sandbox policy, and explicitly enabled resource admission fails closed for unlabelable host grants.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The driver maps policy before registration, rejects duplicate sandbox IDs, and holds a lifecycle gate while startup establishes a cancellable process monitor. The ProcessContainer path delegates execution to a child process configured to be killed if its handle is dropped; cleanup inside the external executable is not established here.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Where sandbox creators are not intended to choose host shares independently, require an operator-controlled allowlist or equivalent trusted approval before mapping requested MXC host paths; preserve the existing policy mapping and explicit-admission rejection as separate controls.
