The seventh title batch of phase 2j (#752): shaikh gains a dated given reading, so the style is a title only inside a title phrase. sheikh keeps its own batch.

What changes

input 1.4.0 – 2.6.0 now
Shaikh Ahmed Khan title Shaikh, given Ahmed given Shaikh, middle Ahmed
Mr Shaikh Ahmed (#853) title Mr Shaikh title Mr, given Shaikh
Khan, Shaikh title Shaikh given Shaikh
His Highness Shaikh Ahmed Khan, Grand Shaikh Ahmed, Shaikh of Bahrain title unchanged
Shaikh Sultan Khan title Shaikh Sultan given Shaikh, middle Sultan
Shaikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa title Shaikh, given Hamad given Shaikh (the accepted cost)

No listed phrase holds shaikh, so nothing is reported. The other sites read as for king:

  • before a family comma, where H6 no longer peels it (Shaikh Smith, Ahmed → family Shaikh Smith, 1.4.0's reading);
  • ending the name;
  • alone after a full name and a comma;
  • past a second comma.

shaikh is the first style in these batches. Where it is a title it still partners a contested word behind it (His Highness Shaikh Sultan Khan → title His Highness Shaikh Sultan). Where it is read as a name it partners nothing.

The cost (rules/H9, Accepted; Derek, 2026-10-27)

A ruler written with the bare title reads it as the given name, the class accepted for king and sultan. It is larger here in news text and smaller in record data:

  • jrc-names: 59 persons have a spelling opening with Shaikh. By my reading:
    • about 38 are Gulf rulers and members of their houses;
    • about 13 are clerics and tribal or political leaders;
    • about 8 are people whose name opens with it.
  • PSC: of the 41 moved records, the forename box opens with it in 38 and the title box holds it in 2.

Found by the review

Shaikh. with a period is a title by H2's shape, but partners nothing behind it: Shaikh. Sultan Khan → title Shaikh., given Sultan, where master and 1.4.0 read title Shaikh. Sultan. Master already read Grace. Dean Smith this way, and a dotted modifier still partners (Wing. Dean Smith). This is now stated in rules/H9's H2 bullet. No local corpus writes the shape.

Measured

Against master fb4cafac (after #904), py3.11, every local corpus with --base; counts and token shapes only.

  • PSC (1,039,171 scored): 33 fixed, 1 broken (Shaikh filed in the title box), 7 changed. Each changed record is still wrong for another reason. 3 more title-box filings are set aside.

  • ctgov-officials: 8 moved, 7 of them fixes:

    • 4 are Shaikh A Aa, CRED, which master read with the initial as the given name;
    • 2 are Aa Shaikh, CRED, CRED, whose credential master read as the given name.

    The eighth still reads its credential as the given name.

  • fec-individuals: 2, both fixes after a family comma.

  • Spelling pairs: jrc-names 0 persons now alike and 12 now apart, each a person spelled both Shaikh and Sheikh; sheikh's batch is to rejoin them. nepal-candidates 0 / 0.

  • No moves: tse-donors, CLDR/GND agreement and the committed corpora, which held no shaikh before the batch's three rule examples.

  • v1: Constants().titles keeps shaikh with no edit. Keep the titles 2.6.0 listed in v1's Constants().titles (#752) #904's sweep in test_config_shim.py gains six rows.

Re-measured after merging #902 and #905: the suite and every generated file are unchanged.

Docs

  • rules/H9: two examples. The ruler Accepted bullet now reads "ruler" (was "monarch"), and the H2 Precedence bullet gains the dotted-style clause.
  • decisions/H9: the dated entry with counts, cost, Derek's decision and the measurement.
  • decisions/vocabulary-model: a pointer entry.
  • Release log: a new bullet.
  • The shaikh entry: counts recorded (given SSA 41; family Census 6,063, Wikidata 49).
  • Case rows: 7.
  • local_corpora.py: a comment example corrected.

Checks

  • uv run pytest and --python 3.15: 31,621 passed each.
  • Also: -n0 -m serial, mypy, ruff, sphinx-build -b doctest.
  • A design-docs review in two rounds, over a 240-input sweep and a 168-row grid of dotted partners. Its findings are fixed here: FEC's missed moves, the dotted style, a PSC count, an empty no-move claim and a stale comment.

…853)

The seventh title batch: `shaikh` gains a dated given reading (US SSA 41,
Census 6,063 as a surname), so the style is a title only inside a title
phrase. `Shaikh Ahmed Khan`, `Mr Shaikh Ahmed` and `Khan, Shaikh` read
given 'Shaikh'; a style, a modifier or `of` keeps the title. A ruler
written with the bare title reads it as the given name too (`Shaikh
Hamad bin Isa`), the class accepted for king and sultan. `sheikh` keeps
its own batch. decisions/H9, 2026-10-26.

…unts (#752 phase 2j)

The review found Shaikh. no partner of a contested word behind it (H2's
shape makes it a title, the phrase test counts only its own phrase),
FEC's two fixes missed, PSC's title-box count mixing in set-aside boxes,
an empty no-move claim, and a stale comment example.
