Adds memory files with namespaces, a per-message cap on the agent's tool rounds, and richer message metadata. Builds on thread management and multi-turn chat (0.4.0).

⚠️ Breaking changes

  • Thread.agent and ThreadSummary.agent removed. The API no longer returns an agent on the thread itself. Read it from each message instead:

    # before (0.4.0)
    thread.agent
    # now (0.5.0)
    message.agent  # Agent | "ARCHIVED" | None

✨ New

  • client.memory: memory files scoped to a namespace. Full async CRUD: list(namespace=None), list_namespaces(), create(), get(), update(), delete().
    • A namespace is a bag name you choose (at most 128 characters, never trimmed). There is no call to create one: the first create() against a new name brings it into existence.
    • namespace is required on create(), get(), update() and delete(), and optional on list() (omit it to list every bag).
    • update() is a partial update: pass only what you want to change. Passing content=None or purpose=None raises InvalidParams, because the API cannot clear a field once set.
    • Concurrent writes are guarded by an opaque version token: a stale value raises ConflictError (409), a malformed one raises APIError (422).
    • delete() is not idempotent: deleting a missing path raises NotFoundError.
    • path may have at most one folder segment ("folder/file.md", not "a/b/file.md"), checked locally.
    • New models: MemoryFileCreate, MemoryFileUpdate, MemoryFileOut, MemoryFileSummaryOut.
  • chat.start(..., memory_namespace=...): attaches the new thread to a memory bag, frozen for the thread's lifetime. Omit it to run with no memory tools, unless the agent has its own namespace. Not accepted on chat.send.
  • chat.start(..., max_steps=...) and chat.send(..., max_steps=...): cap the agent's tool rounds for one message (integer >= 1).
    • The cap is per message, not per thread: a follow-up that leaves it unset runs with the server default (60 today, subject to change). Pass an integer on every call to keep a custom cap.
    • Reaching the cap is not an error: the reply ends with status="success" and asks whether to continue. No field flags it.
    • There is no "unlimited": None, integers below 1, floats, bools and strings raise InvalidParams locally.
    • New exports SERVER_DEFAULT and MaxSteps.
  • Message.agent: the agent that handled that message (Agent | Literal["ARCHIVED"] | None, "ARCHIVED" if the agent was deleted since).
  • Message.error_code: set when a message failed for a known reason (for example "budget_exhausted"). Typed as a plain str, since the API adds codes over time.
  • ThreadSummary.inception: "conversational" or "routine", exposed as the new ThreadInception enum.
await client.memory.create(
    path="tone.md",
    namespace="support-bot",
    purpose="How the agent should talk to customers",
    content="Friendly, short answers.",
)

run = await client.chat.start(
    agent_id=AGENT_ID,
    message="Research X, then write it up.",
    memory_namespace="support-bot",
    max_steps=5,
)

🔧 Changed

  • __version__ is now resolved at runtime from the installed package metadata (importlib.metadata) and falls back to "unknown" on a raw source checkout. The single source of truth is pyproject.toml.
  • uv run invoke clean now also removes tool caches (__pycache__, .pytest_cache, .ruff_cache, .pyright, htmlcov, .coverage*).

🛠 Dev tooling

  • uv run invoke code.format | code.check | code.test | code.all: the day-to-day loop (ruff, pyright, pytest with the same 100% coverage floor as CI).
  • uv run invoke release --patch | --minor | --major | --version X.Y.Z: bumps pyproject.toml, regenerates uv.lock, runs the lint, type-check, test and build gate, then creates the release commit and annotated tag. Never pushes.

📚 Docs & examples

  • Two new runnable examples under examples/: 09_memory.py (create, list, read, update with the stale-version guard, delete) and 10_max_steps.py (cap tool rounds, then continue past the cap).
  • README: new "Memory files" and "Cap the agent's tool rounds" sections, and memory_namespace and max_steps added to the call parameters table.

Notes

  • Routines also accept max_steps on the API, but are not exposed by this SDK.
  • On Platform, a namespace is shared by the whole organization. To isolate your end users, put an identifier in the namespace name (for example support-bot-user_123).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added memory-file operations to list files and namespaces, create, retrieve, update, and delete files.
    • Added per-message limits for chat tool rounds, with a server-default option.
    • Added message error-code metadata and thread inception information.
  • Updates
    • Thread summaries now report how a thread began instead of including an agent field.
    • Updated examples and usage guidance for memory operations and chat limits.
  • Release
    • Updated the package to version 0.5.0.

ahmeda-cominty and others added 13 commits August 25, 2026 13:35
BREAKING CHANGE: client.memory methods no longer send user_id. Every call
(except list()) now requires a namespace, a caller-chosen bag name (max 128
chars). create()/get()/update()/delete() require it as a keyword argument;
list(namespace=None) filters when given, lists every bag when omitted.
MemoryFileOut and MemoryFileSummaryOut gain a namespace field. New
list_namespaces() lists every bag with at least one file.

chat.start() gains an optional memory_namespace kwarg that attaches the new
thread to a bag, frozen for its lifetime. chat.send() does not accept it: a
follow-up cannot change a thread's namespace.
Enable ruff's TID252 with ban-relative-imports = "parents": only
same-package, single-dot relative imports stay relative, imports reaching
into a parent package are absolute (cominty_sdk.foo) instead. Fixes
resources/*.py accordingly.

Also drops the types.EllipsisType import in resources/memory.py, which
pyright rejected under the 3.9 floor (it's 3.10+ even under TYPE_CHECKING).
Uses typeshed's synthesized "ellipsis" forward-ref instead, which needs no
import and works down to 3.9.
BREAKING CHANGE: ThreadSummary.agent (and Thread.agent) is removed. The
local API no longer returns an agent on the thread itself: verified live
against a running instance. Read the agent from each Message instead.

Message gains agent (Agent | Literal["ARCHIVED"] | None) and error_code
(str | None, e.g. "budget_exhausted"). ThreadSummary gains inception, a new
ThreadInception enum ("conversational" | "routine").

Found and confirmed via the playground scenarios against a real local
backend: chat.start and threads.list both raised a pydantic ValidationError
on the missing required `agent` field before this fix.
Bumps the python-dependencies group with 4 updates: pydantic (2.13.4 ->
2.13.5), typing-extensions (4.15.0 -> 4.16.0), pyright (1.1.411 -> 1.1.414),
ruff (0.15.14 -> 0.16.8).

ruff 0.16 formats fenced Python code blocks in Markdown files; AGENTS.md and
README.md are reformatted accordingly (double blank line before top-level
defs/classes, single space before trailing comments). No prose changed.
…message

ref ENG-1206

Added `max_steps` to `chat.start` and `chat.send` methods, allowing users to cap the number of tool rounds for individual messages. The parameter accepts integers `>= 1` and the sentinel `SERVER_DEFAULT` to use the server's default (currently 60). Invalid values raise `InvalidParams`. Updated documentation and examples to reflect this new feature.
Bump the version to 0.5.0 in pyproject.toml and uv.lock. Split the
CHANGELOG per release (0.2.0 to 0.5.0) from the tag history, and point
.env.example and examples/README.md at the staging base URL
https://ds-staging.cominty.com.

Declare a read-only permissions block for the workflow.

The workflow has no permissions: block, so the default GITHUB_TOKEN scopes apply. The test job only checks out code and runs local commands. Writing to $GITHUB_STEP_SUMMARY does not need any token scope. Restrict the token to contents: read.

Restrict /merge to trusted commenters before using the PAT.

The workflow runs for any PR comment containing /merge. The pinned action does not validate the commenter. It directly updates the base ref with the supplied token, so an untrusted commenter can trigger the PAT-backed fast-forward when the PAT has write access.

Require a trusted author association and a command prefix:

Replace the tag-push release summary.

If a maintainer follows the short procedure below this line, pushing the final tag will not publish to PyPI. The workflow documented in README.md runs when a GitHub Release is published. Update this summary to require the release task, a push, and publication of the GitHub Release; distinguish the manual TestPyPI rehearsal.

Use the message thread ID in the follow-up example.

If run comes from client.chat.stream(message_id), run.thread is None. The example then raises AttributeError instead of sending an answer. Use (await run.result()).thread_id; that works for both bare streams and started chats.
