Add snapshot editing, durable compaction, and live turn control - #51
Add snapshot-aware file reads and batched edits with stale-content rejection and checkpoint undo/redo. Long tool loops persist compaction working state before replacing context. Interactive turns support safe steering, cancellation, queued follow-ups, and explicit request-ID approvals through a single terminal reader.
Review fixes preserve corrections through cancellation and verification repairs, retain corrections at iteration limits, avoid cancellation callbacks under locks, freeze captured provider requests, enforce snapshot workspace permission checks, and account for all successful provider iterations. The global cache eviction test is isolated from concurrent context tests.
Validation
dotnet build SharpClawCode.sln --configuration Release --warnaserror — zero warnings/errors
Full Debug suite: 450 passed (302 unit, 128 integration, 20 parity)
Release validation: 128 integration and 20 parity tests passed; all 302 unit tests passed after isolating the shared-cache test
Targeted runtime, snapshot, approval, cancellation/resume, compaction/replay, and verification regressions
Cross-platform CI runs on this PR; local validation used macOS
Risk and compatibility
Existing tool JSON, permission modes, checkpoint formats, and result envelopes remain compatible; new events and tools are additive
Dangerous file and shell operations retain existing permission gates
No credentials, local state, or generated secrets included
Compaction uses configurable token estimates rather than provider tokenizers. Snapshot publication rechecks decoded text before replacement but cannot provide an OS-level compare-and-swap against external editors. These boundaries are documented in docs/interactive-runtime.md.

The pull request adds snapshot-based file editing, automatic context compaction, and live controls for REPL turns. It updates provider tool execution and conversation history replay, adds runtime configuration and persisted events, and includes related documentation and tests.
Adds provider-request context preparation with configurable budgets and durable compaction events. History assembly replays primary compaction snapshots and steering after the snapshot. Kernel results include accumulated provider and compaction usage.

Avoid a full session event-log read on every repair attempt.
Each repair attempt reads the whole session event log and then keeps only this turn's TurnSteeredEvent items. IEventStore has no turn-scoped read, so each read grows with total session history. Consider adding a turn-filtered read to IEventStore, or reading only events appended since the last read.

Update the repair-attempt event retrieval around IEventStore.ReadAllAsync so it

events are missed.
Build the edited text in one pass instead of concatenating per edit.
Build the edited text in one pass instead of concatenating per edit.
Each loop iteration in ExecuteAsync builds a new copy of the full file. With up to 100 edits, the cost scales with the edit count times the file size. No file size limit applies before this loop, so a large file with a full batch causes this cost.
Suggested fix
+using System.Text;
- var updated = text;- foreach (var edit in edits.Reverse())- updated = string.Concat(updated.AsSpan(0, snapshot.Offset(edit.StartLine)), edit.NewText, updated.AsSpan(snapshot.Offset(edit.StartLine + edit.DeleteLineCount)));+ var builder = new StringBuilder(text.Length);+ var copiedUntil = 0;+ foreach (var edit in edits)+ {+ builder.Append(text, copiedUntil, snapshot.Offset(edit.StartLine) - copiedUntil);+ builder.Append(edit.NewText);+ copiedUntil = snapshot.Offset(edit.StartLine + edit.DeleteLineCount);+ }+ builder.Append(text, copiedUntil, text.Length - copiedUntil);+ var updated = builder.ToString();
The edits are already sorted ascending and checked for overlap, so one forward pass gives the same result as the reverse pass. The updated == text check and the write path stay unchanged.

Bound the file size before readfilesnapshot builds a snapshot.
Bound the file size before read_file_snapshot builds a snapshot.
read_file_snapshot reads the entire file before it returns a window of at most 500 lines. The read has no size cap. FileTextSnapshot then hashes a full UTF-8 copy and builds a full line index, even for a one-line request. For very large or line-dense files, this adds allocation and CPU work proportional to the file size. Add a file-size limit before the read, or compute the window without indexing the whole file.

Acquire semantic-write.lock in write_file and edit_file before they read the file.
edit_file_snapshot holds the lock, but write_file, edit_file, and undo/redo do not. Another session can write between the snapshot editor's compare and move. The snapshot edit then overwrites that change, and its undo record holds stale content.

Update WriteFileTool, EditFileTool, and undo/redo operations to acquire the

Cap the characters returned for each snapshot line.
Cap the characters returned for each snapshot line.
limit caps the number of lines, not the length of each line. A single long line, such as one from a minified file, is returned in full in Content, Output, and StructuredOutputJson. That full result stays in the recent tool exchange. When the retained context estimate plus SummaryMaxTokens reaches the budget, AutomaticContextManager.PrepareAsync throws InvalidOperationException before the provider request is sent. Add a test that runs SpectreReplTerminal through a cancelled read.
Add a test that runs SpectreReplTerminal through a cancelled read.
SpectreReplTerminal.ReadLineAsync keeps pendingRead after a cancelled wait, because Console.ReadLine cannot be cancelled. No test creates a SpectreReplTerminal. The MaxReaders assertions measure only the test Terminal fake. A change that starts a second Console.ReadLine after a cancelled wait would not fail any test.
A fake whose read stays pending does not cover this path, because it does not run the production pendingRead logic. Test the production class with a blocking reader:
Install a blocking TextReader with Console.SetIn before the first read starts.
Count ReadLine calls on the reader. Signal from the reader when each call begins.
Cancel the first wait. Start a second read, then release the reader. Assert that the second read returns the line from the first physical read.
Check for an extra read with a bounded wait on the start signal after the second read completes. An immediate count check can pass before a new read starts.
Bound every wait with a timeout.
In finally, release the reader and restore the original reader with Console.SetIn. A failed assertion then does not leave a blocked read or a replaced console input.
Place the test in an xUnit collection that does not run in parallel with other console-dependent tests, because Console.SetIn changes process-wide state.

Check the second token after the first flow cancels.

The test at SnapshotEditingTests.cs:111 leaves the target already different from the expected text. A comparison moved before staging would produce the same false, so the test does not protect the ordering. Write stale to the target. Build the writer with new ConditionalFileWriter(decorator), where the decorator delegates to the real IFileSystem. In WriteAllTextAsync, when the path is the temporary path, overwrite the target with external. Then assert that WriteAsync returns false and that the target still contains external. The existing cancellation test passes an already-canceled token. The staging write returns a canceled task before it opens the file, so the ThrowIfCancellationRequested() check at ConditionalFileWriter.cs:17 never runs in that test. Removing that check leaves the suite passing. The interface documents that cancellation before publication leaves the target untouched, and no test checks that guarantee.
