ADFA-6773: support a wildcard project name in deep links - #2189
ADFA-6773: deep links accept the wildcard project name <*> (sent as %3C%2A%3E), meaning "whichever project is open in the editor". Needed by the LLM Course plugin (ADFA-6551), which cannot know the name a learner gave their project.
Wildcard is answered from the live project (IProjectManager.projectDirPath), never by a lookup under the projects root, because the open project can live anywhere. It never goes through switchToProject, whose finishing and blank-path branches would arm a hand-off to a path a wildcard does not have. The same-project half was extracted as navigateWithinOpenProject.
No project open shows "No project is open. Open a project, then try this link again." There is deliberately no Recents fallback. Metric outcome NO_PROJECT_OPEN.
Create link never emits a wildcard. The whole <...> namespace is reserved: parse() rejects unknown selectors, buildUrl / isLinkableProjectName refuse such names.
Wildcard links collapse the editor's bottom sheet once the file opens (the plugin used to do this itself by reflection). Named links leave the sheet alone.
A wildcard file-not-found message names the project searched.
Metrics: new selector field (name / current).
ARCHITECTURE.md and the DeepLinkRequest KDoc are updated.
Security note
A link no longer has to name its project, so any web page can open a named file (for example local.properties) in whatever project is open. It only displays the file, on the device, and the existing path-traversal checks still apply. AndroidManifest.xml / assetlinks are unchanged.
Known trade-offs
Existing projects whose directory name is shaped like <...> lose Create link and deep-link support (reserved namespace; chosen deliberately).
On a cold editor onCreate with no project path, a wildcard bounces to MainActivity and shows the no-project error.
Release coupling
The plugin's 26 Oct build writes all its lesson links as %3C%2A%3E, so every lesson link fails on an IDE without this change. After this ships, raise the plugin's plugin.min_ide_version and confirm the plugin manager enforces it (ADFA-6551).
Testing
Full :app unit suite: 1,579 tests, 0 failures (run before the review-fix commit; the deep-link suites were re-run after it).
New tests: DeepLinkRequestTest, DeepLinkBuildUrlTest, CreateLinkActionTest, ProjectValidationsTest, DeepLinkMetricTest, DeepLinkSetupGateTest, and a new WildcardDeepLinkEditorTest (7 cases).
Lint: no issues on changed lines. Local lint needed the Compose runtime-lint checks disabled (they crash on Kotlin 2.3 metadata); CI lint remains the authoritative run.
Device QA on a Pixel 6 Pro (Android 17): ready editor, line/column, sheet collapse, named link leaves the sheet alone, missing file, unknown selector, no-file link, close dialog showing, cancel afterwards, no project open.
LLM Course plugin on the same Pixel (llm-course.cgp v1.0.0, 100 lesson links written as %3C%2A%3E): installed through the Addons Manager; a module 4 lesson link before Module 1's Run shows File "llm-course/LLM_Course_Kotlin/04_bigram/src/BigramModel.kt" was not found in project "Build Apps Anywhere".; after Run (104 files copied) the same link opens BigramModel.kt at line 56, column 13 and collapses the sheet; swiping the sheet back up returns to the lesson. Only module 4's first link was tapped.
Not run on a device: a link arriving while a sync is still in flight, and the editor finishing after a confirmed switch (both unit-tested); other modules' links; back with a lesson showing.
Known, separate: after a link the target line can sit just below the visible area, even with the sheet already collapsed (ADFA-6782).
The project segment `<*>` (sent as %3C%2A%3E) now means "whichever project
is open in the editor", so content such as the LLM Course plugin can link
into a learner's project without knowing its name.
- DeepLinkRequest: WILDCARD_PROJECT / isCurrentProject; the whole <...>
namespace is reserved (parse rejects unknown selectors, buildUrl and
isLinkableProjectName refuse such names, so Create link never emits one).
- EditorHandlerActivity: wildcard is answered from the live project and never
goes through switchToProject; same-project handling extracted into
navigateWithinOpenProject. Bottom sheet collapses once the file opens.
- MainActivity / resolveDeepLinkProject: no project open shows an error and
records NO_PROJECT_OPEN.
- Metrics: NO_PROJECT_OPEN outcome and a name/current selector.
- Wildcard file-not-found message names the project searched.

- Collapse the bottom sheet only for wildcard links, not every deep link.
- A wildcard arriving under an open close dialog no longer re-arms the
pending switch's file request onto its own intent.
- The resolver reports NoProjectOpen without flashing; MainActivity shows it.
- Drop dead wildcard handling from the editor's by-name failure path.
- Correct the DeepLinkMetric projectName doc.

📝 Summary
Deep links can use the encoded <*> selector (%3C%2A%3E) to target the project that is currently open. Wildcard links do not switch projects or fall back to Recents.
If no project is open, the app displays an error and records the NO_PROJECT_OPEN outcome.
Wildcard file links open files within the active project. If the file is missing, the error identifies the project searched. After a wildcard target opens, the editor hides the bottom sheet.
Deep-link metrics record the selector as name or current. Wildcard requests omit the project name.
Link generation rejects project names in the <...> namespace, including <*>. Parsing rejects unknown selectors.
Tests cover selector parsing, link generation, project matching, metrics, setup gating, and editor handling. Test results are not established by the available evidence.
Risk: a wildcard link can open a named file in whichever project is active. Users should verify the active project before opening wildcard links. Existing path-traversal checks remain in place.
Release risk: existing plugin links that use the wildcard will not work on IDE versions that do not support it. The available evidence does not establish whether the LLM Course plugin sets an appropriate plugin.min_ide_version.
Deep links can use <*> to target the currently open project. The editor handles wildcard file requests without switching projects. When no usable project is open, it reports a dedicated error and analytics outcome.
Parsing recognizes <*> as the current-project selector and marks its file requests. URL building rejects selector-shaped project names. Tests cover accepted wildcard forms, invalid selectors, and generated links.
Routing through the open project app/src/main/java/com/itsaky/androidide/activities/editor/EditorHandlerActivity.kt, app/src/main/java/com/itsaky/androidide/utils/ProjectValidations.kt, app/src/test/java/com/itsaky/androidide/activities/editor/WildcardDeepLinkEditorTest.kt, app/src/test/java/com/itsaky/androidide/utils/ProjectValidationsTest.kt, app/src/test/java/com/itsaky/androidide/activities/DeepLinkSetupGateTest.kt, resources/src/main/res/values/strings.xml, ARCHITECTURE.md
Wildcard requests bypass named-project switching and use shared same-project navigation. Requests are applied when the workspace is ready and armed during sync. The editor reports missing files and handles cases with no usable open project. Tests cover close-dialog behavior, pending requests, and project-path changes.
Resolution outcomes and analytics app/src/main/java/com/itsaky/androidide/utils/DeepLinkProjectResolution.kt, app/src/main/java/com/itsaky/androidide/activities/DeepLinkActivity.kt, app/src/main/java/com/itsaky/androidide/activities/MainActivity.kt, app/src/main/java/com/itsaky/androidide/analytics/DeepLinkMetric.kt, app/src/test/java/com/itsaky/androidide/analytics/DeepLinkMetricTest.kt
Resolution adds NoProjectOpen. Metrics record the selector and omit the project name for current-project requests. Unsuccessful lookups distinguish definitive failures from retryable unverifiable results.

- A wildcard superseding a still-resolving named switch now rolls back that
switch's capture (unless a close dialog already owns it), so the next real
switch takes its own capture.
- applyDeepLinkFileRequest reads the project path once on the main thread and
drops the result if another project took over while the file was resolved.

CodeRabbit: both findings were valid and are fixed, each with a test (replies on the threads above). The two behavioural tests fail without the fix.
Claude Code Review: the bot posted only its manual-review notice and no findings, so there was nothing to address. The earlier local /code-review pass was fixed in ab99763.
Deep-link unit tests re-run: all pass. CI has not been re-checked for this push yet.
Bind deferred wildcard requests to the project that armed them.
When workspace == null, navigateWithinOpenProject() arms the wildcard request without recording the current project. If project bookkeeping changes projectDirPath before postProjectInit() drains the request, the request can resolve its file against project B instead of project A. Capture the arming project and drain the request before rejecting a project mismatch.

Known gap, not fixed in this PR: a project-only wildcard link (wildcard project, no file) brings the editor forward but records no terminal metric. Found by the high-effort /code-review. Reviewers may want to decide whether that case should emit one.
