ADFA-6510

Instant Wipe: the self-destruct half of Instant Hide (ADFA-40), renamed. When armed, a single-finger circular sweep on any app surface irreversibly destroys the user's work and leaves the device showing the "Code Breaker" cryptogram game. Instant, no dialog, no undo.

Stacked on ADFA-40 (#2133). Based on feature/ADFA-40-instant-hide (it builds on that PR's :security module, not yet merged). Base will be retargeted to stage once #2133 merges. Do not merge before then.

What it does

  • Armed via a separate Settings toggle (off by default) behind a blocking destructive warning; arming opens a safe gesture-practice overlay that never wipes.
  • Trigger: a single-finger circle (>=330 deg, spanning >=70% of the screen width) on any surface -- IDE/editor, the disguise, and the terminal. The Settings and practice screens are excluded (InstantHide.GesturesExempt) so arming/practicing can't wipe.
  • Wipe: cancel the build, stop Termux, close the project + the Recents DB, shred the source and DB files (fast-delete the bulk regenerable caches), reset bookkeeping, blank prefs, write .pip/.pip2 markers, show the disguise.
  • Neutralization: a wiped install is permanently the disguise. Clearing app data to strip the markers (the tamper signature) neutralizes -- shows the disguise -- but does not re-wipe (see Decisions).

Review-by-commit

Core: PR1 engine + dry-run override - PR2 circle detector - PR3 arm toggle + practice overlay - PR4(1/2) orchestration - PR4(2/2) gesture wiring - PR5 tamper tripwire.
Review-driven fixes (surfaced by on-device testing): terminal SecurityController mount - tamper neutralize-only - splash-screen leak fix - Instant Hide gesture rehearsal.

Deliberate decisions / deviations

  • No backup agent -- the app already sets allowBackup="false" (stronger than the mockup's armed-state agent, which would require re-enabling backup).
  • Shred source, fast-delete bulk caches -- a single-pass overwrite is not a guaranteed erase on flash (device at-rest encryption is the real protection), and shredding GBs would defeat "instant". Strings say "delete", not "securely erase".
  • Tamper neutralizes, does not re-wipe -- the signature (stealth alias + blank prefs + no marker) can't distinguish a prior Instant Wipe from a plain Instant Hide whose data was cleared, so re-wiping would risk destroying work never meant for it. Staying the disguise still defeats the tamper.
  • Recents Room DB closed before shredding its files (real wipe only; skipped in dry-run) -- afterwards the IDE never runs again, so the closed cached instance is never touched.

ADFA-40 gaps closed here (folded in, flagged for ADFA-40 reviewers)

  • Terminal coverage -- the Termux terminal sits outside EdgeToEdgeIDEActivity, so Instant Hide's triggers and FLAG_SECURE never reached it (and the terminal was screenshotable when armed). Superseded by ADFA-40: Instant Hide (disguise the IDE as a cryptogram game) #2133's review round, which mounts the controller on every activity; the merge a75e2e0 removed this branch's TerminalActivity mount so the triggers do not run twice.
  • Splash leak -- launching the hidden app flashed the real Code On The Go logo (the OS paints the splash from the activity theme before app code runs; all aliases targeted SplashActivity). A StealthSplashActivity with a logo-free splash now backs the stealth aliases.
  • Hide rehearsal -- Instant Hide had no gesture practice; arming it now opens a two-step rehearsal (three-finger tap, then slow double three-finger tap).

After #2133's review round (2026-10-29)

  • a75e2e0 merges ADFA-40: Instant Hide (disguise the IDE as a cryptogram game) #2133's fixes up. Besides the textual conflicts:

    • the practice screens are InstantHide.GesturesExempt, since they no longer stay trigger-free by being plain activities;
    • StealthSplashActivity starts the disguise with InstantHide.disguiseIntent, so tapping the stealth icon keeps the puzzle;
    • the wipe circle detector joins the reworked touch path;
    • LauncherAliasReconcileTest names the renamed default alias.
  • 87dfd8f: a wiped or tampered install is now the disguise on every entry point, not only the launcher. The review asked for every exported activity, and after a wipe or a data clear the hidden flag can be clear. A wipe also closes the floating windows and masks the notifications, as a hide does. Its new test fails with the marker check reverted.

  • 732c2fc: the wipe also deletes the relocated build output (noBackupFilesDir/gradle-build, moved there by ADFA-4930) and Quick Build's quickbuild-scratch. Both hold the compiled app, and the build output's folder names carry the project names. Before, they survived a wipe.

  • ba954e5: the wipe never follows a symbolic link. File.deleteRecursively followed a link to a folder, and the shredder overwrote a linked file, so a link in a project or in build output could destroy files outside the wipe. Each new test fails with its fix reverted: the linked file is deleted, or emptied through the link.

On a device (Pixel 6 Pro, 2026-10-30): a dry-run wipe from the IDE, the disguise and the terminal listed both new folders among its 8 targets. The symbolic-link handling is not checked on a device: a dry run deletes nothing, and no real wipe has run.

After CodeRabbit's review (2026-10-30)

  • ee9591d, e6b0a8f, bed36d6 merge ADFA-40: Instant Hide (disguise the IDE as a cryptogram game) #2133's later fixes up. b6946a0 merges ADFA-40: Instant Hide (disguise the IDE as a cryptogram game) #2133 again after another session rebased it onto stage; ADFA-6510: Instant Wipe (self-destruct; circular-sweep wipes the workspace, neutralizes to the disguise) #2137's own diff is unchanged.
  • cad0788: the wipe and the stealth splash start the disguise through InstantHide.showDisguise, which also removes the app's other tasks. After a wipe, Recents shows only the disguise's card, and the splash no longer leaves an empty task of its own beside it.
  • b0ce82a: a real wipe logs only counts, so logcat does not keep the layout of the user's projects. A dry run still logs each target's path.
  • 5099486: the launcher repair compares every alias with the state a finished swap leaves, so it repairs a swap that stopped with no icon or with both. It read only the default alias before. The swap order (default off first) is unchanged. Its new tests fail on the old check, and the repairs were checked on a Pixel 6 Pro.
  • bf132b0: StealthSplashActivity is no longer exported. Any installed app could start it, which made the stealth icon the only one. With both features off, that is the tamper fingerprint, so the IDE stayed the disguise for good. Checked on a Pixel 6 Pro before and after.

Before GA (required)

Remove the /sdcard/Download/CodeOnTheGo.nowipe dry-run override -- it's dev/QA scaffolding (makes the wipe enumerate + log but delete nothing); a shipped .nowipe is a silent kill-switch defeat.

Verification

  • Unit: circle geometry (8 cases), WipeManager enumeration + dry-run boundary, SecureShredder (incl. cache-dir skip), NeutralizationMarker.
  • On device (SM-G781U): arm toggle + destructive dialog + wipe practice overlay render; font scale 1.0/2.0 on the Security screen; terminal FLAG_SECURE (0-byte capture when armed) + a 60s-inactivity hide fired from the terminal; a tamper-triggered dry-run deleted nothing (a canary file survived); the live gesture -> wipe dry-run was confirmed by a human tester -- performed as expected.
  • Known test gaps: AppWipeService teardown and the practice overlays/activities aren't unit-tested; the no-logo splash and the hide-rehearsal launch are confirmed visually (adb can't capture the ~200ms splash or inject multi-finger gestures).

davidschachterADFA and others added 23 commits October 12, 2026 21:43
First PR in the ADFA-40 "boss is coming" Instant Hide stack: a new
:security library module holding the touch-gesture detectors and the
per-device launcher-alias selection, with unit tests. No app wiring or
behaviour change yet.

- ThreeFingerTapDetector / SlowDoubleThreeFingerTapDetector: enter and
exit the disguise. Timing reads MotionEvent down/event times rather
than the wall clock, so a gesture is measured by the input system and
is deterministically testable from synthesised events.
- LauncherAliasManager: an FNV-1a hash of hardware identifiers picks a
stable per-device disguise variant. Uses Int.mod (never negative)
instead of abs(hash) % n, which returns a negative index for
  hash == Int.MIN_VALUE.
- 13 Robolectric/JUnit tests covering tap duration/drift/pointer bounds,
the double-tap gap window, and the hash (determinism, in-range
invariant, and an independently implemented FNV-1a reference).

The self-destruct half of the original mockup (secure-wipe + tripwires)
is deliberately out of scope and not ported.

Second PR in the Instant Hide stack: the user-facing arm switch and its
persisted flag. No trigger behaviour yet.

- SecurityPreferences (preferences module): the instantHideEnabled arm
flag plus the internal isHiddenStateActive runtime flag, backed by the
existing PreferenceManager store (survives restart/reboot, clears on
  uninstall).
- A "Security" preference screen with an "Instant Hide" toggle, added to
  the configuration tree in rootPrefExts.
- A PREFS_SECURITY tooltip tag. New strings live in their own
strings_security.xml so adding them does not pull the whole strings.xml
  under the file-level Spotless ratchet.

Toggling the switch only persists the flag for now; the gesture/sensor
triggers, the disguise screen, and the launcher aliases arrive in later
PRs in this stack.

Third commit in the Instant Hide stack: the disguise the app shows when
hidden, the launcher aliases that rename/re-icon it, and the redirect that
re-enters the disguise on launch. The gesture/sensor triggers that *enter*
the disguise land in the next commit.

:security module:
- CryptogramActivity: a fully playable offline cryptogram game (ported from
the mockup as Views, minus self-destruct). The exit gesture (slow double
three-finger tap) clears the hidden-state flag, restores the default
launcher alias, and relaunches the IDE via its launcher intent, so the
module needs no dependency on :app.
- FlowLayout, the layout, light/night colours, strings, and 5 stealth
launcher icons. Declares CryptogramActivity (Material3 theme) in its own
manifest, which is merged into the app.

app:
- Launcher identity moves from SplashActivity to a default activity-alias
plus 5 disabled stealth aliases (all targeting SplashActivity), so Instant
Hide can swap the app name/icon to "Code Breaker" by toggling which alias
  is enabled.
- SplashActivity redirects to CryptogramActivity when the disguise is active,
before any IDE UI is shown (persists across restarts/reboots).

Ported as Views (documented ADR-0009 exception: disposable camouflage, not
core IDE UI). Compiles; the full on-device enter/play/exit test lands with
the triggers in the next commit.

…ange)

The file was 4-space indented. The Spotless ratchet is file-level, so the
Instant Hide edit in the following commit pulls the whole file under it and
reindents every line to tabs. Keep that reformat standalone (per CLAUDE.md)
so the behavioral diff stays reviewable.

Final commit in the Instant Hide stack: the controller that *enters* the
disguise, mounted on every edge-to-edge IDE screen.

:security module:
- SecurityController owns the four triggers (three-finger tap, screen-off
broadcast, face-down sensors, 60s inactivity). Any of them calls
triggerInstantHide: set the hidden-state flag, swap to the stealth alias,
launch the disguise, finish the IDE. It also applies the FLAG_SECURE policy.
- SecurityOverride is the /sdcard/Download/CodeOnTheGo.mfs escape hatch. By
default FLAG_SECURE is on whenever armed (masking Recents, blocking
screenshots); the file turns it off for QA, and the app warns once.

app:
- EdgeToEdgeIDEActivity (the shared base of the project list, the editor and
Preferences) forwards its lifecycle and touch events to the controller and
applies FLAG_SECURE on resume. isInstantHideGesturesEnabled() lets a screen
opt out of the triggers while keeping the masking.
- PreferencesActivity opts out, so arming the feature on its own Settings
screen does not immediately hide it.

Face-down requires both the gravity threshold and proximity (face-down on a
surface), matching the documentation rather than the mockup's gravity-alone
trigger, to cut false positives.

Verified on device: screen-off engages the disguise, the launcher alias swaps
to the per-device stealth variant, the cryptogram renders at 1x and 2x, the
hidden state survives a restart, and clearing it returns to the IDE. The two
three-finger gestures are covered by the detector unit tests; multi-touch
cannot be synthesised over adb, so confirm those by hand.

Address two architecture-review findings:

- i18n: the user-facing Instant Hide / cryptogram strings lived in app/
  and security/, but crowdin.yml sources only resources/.../values/
*strings.xml, so they would never reach translation. Consolidate them
into resources/.../values/security_strings.xml and reference them via
com.itsaky.androidide.resources.R (aliased ResR where a module already
owns an R, e.g. CryptogramActivity's R.color). :security now depends on
:resources. String names and values are unchanged.

- docs: add a :security README (including the ADR-0009 Views exception)
and a Security row to the ARCHITECTURE.md module table, per "keep docs
  in step with code".

No behavior change.

Flipping the phone face down now enters the disguise on the
accelerometer/gravity reading alone, without the proximity gate. This is
the "boss is coming" gesture users expect: a quick flip in the hand
should hide the IDE, not only setting it face down on a surface.

- Drop the proximity sensor and the isNear AND-condition; the face-down
trigger is now gravity Z past the threshold only.
- Fire once on the transition into face-down, not on every sensor event
  while it stays inverted.

Supersedes the face-down note in 275aeb3, which required gravity AND
proximity.

Doc drift from bef5d7d, which dropped the proximity gate; the README
still said gravity AND proximity. Flagged by review.

DeepLinkActivity is exported and forwards straight into IDE content
(MainActivity / the editor), bypassing SplashActivity's hidden-state
redirect -- so while disguised, an accepted or forged project link could
reveal the IDE without the exit gesture. Apply the same guard at the top
of DeepLinkActivity.onCreate: if the disguise is engaged, show it and drop
the link silently (acknowledging a received link would itself leak the
IDE's presence). Document both guarded entry points in the README.

Flagged by review (CodeRabbit security-architecture, High).

Arming Instant Hide in Settings set the preference but did not re-apply the
FLAG_SECURE policy, which otherwise runs only on the next onResume. The
Settings window stayed screenshotable and unmasked in Recents until the user
navigated away and back -- contrary to the armed-state contract that masking
applies the moment the feature is on.

The toggle callback now resolves the hosting EdgeToEdgeIDEActivity from the
preference's context (unwrapping any ContextWrapper) and re-applies
applyScreenSecurity() in place. Turning the feature off clears the flag
immediately too.

Addresses a CodeRabbit review finding on PR #2133.

… dry-run override

The destroy engine for Instant Wipe (the self-destruct half of ADFA-40). Nothing
destructive is reachable from the UI yet; this is the testable core.

- SecureShredder: best-effort overwrite (RandomAccessFile "rws" + SecureRandom in
  4 KB chunks) -> fsync -> truncate -> delete, depth-first over a tree. Documented
as best-effort only: an overwrite-in-place is not a guaranteed physical erase on
flash, so it must not be sold to users as a "secure erase".
- WipeManager: a pure, unit-testable orchestrator over File targets. The
stop-the-world teardown (cancel build, stop Termux, close project + Recents DB) is
delegated to a WipeTeardown interface that :app will implement, because :security
must not depend on :app. It splits small/sensitive secure-shred targets from bulk
regenerable fast-delete targets, resets state through the interface, and writes the
  tripwire markers.
- SecurityOverride.isWipeDryRun(): the /sdcard/Download/CodeOnTheGo.nowipe QA
override. In dry-run, WipeManager runs the teardown and enumerates targets but
destroys nothing and mutates no state. DEV/QA SCAFFOLD -- must be removed before GA.
- Unit tests (pure JVM): shredder correctness (missing/empty/multi-chunk/nested tree)
and the dry-run-vs-real boundary, teardown-before-delete ordering, and enumeration.

Ports the mockup's single-finger circular-sweep detector into GestureDetectorHelper,
the trigger gesture for Instant Wipe. Not wired to any action yet.

- A stroke qualifies only if it is one pointer throughout (a second pointer marks it
as one of the tap gestures and disqualifies it), has >= MIN_STROKE_POINTS move
  samples over >= MIN_CIRCLE_DURATION_MS, spans >= MIN_CIRCLE_WIDTH_FRACTION of the
screen width, and sweeps >= MIN_CIRCLE_SWEEP_DEGREES around its bounding-box centre.
- The sweep is a sum of per-step angle deltas normalised to [-PI, PI], so it measures
NET rotation: a back-and-forth scribble or a straight scroll cancels out instead of
accumulating arc length. This is what keeps an editor/terminal scroll from wiping.
- Updated the class KDoc (the circle detector is no longer "out of scope").
- Robolectric unit tests from synthesised events: full circle and a just-past-330
sweep fire; a 300-degree sweep, too few points, too short a stroke, a sub-threshold
width, a second finger, and a straight full-width drag are all rejected.

…ation

Adds the user-facing arming for Instant Wipe: off by default, independent of Instant
Hide. Nothing is wired to the wipe engine yet.

- SecurityPreferences.instantWipeEnabled + clearAll() (blanks all security flags; the
post-destruct "un-armed but stealth alias still enabled" state is the tamper
  signature PR5 keys on).
- A second Security settings row (InstantWipe). Arming is gated behind a blocking,
non-dismissable warning that it permanently deletes all projects with no
confirmation and no undo; the switch only flips on the dialog's positive button.
  Disarming is immediate.
- Strings in :resources, worded "delete" (not "securely erase": an overwrite is not a
  guaranteed physical erase on flash).

Backup lockout from the plan is intentionally NOT ported: the app already sets
android:allowBackup="false", which disables backup/restore app-wide -- a stronger
guarantee than the mockup's armed-state BackupAgent, which would require re-enabling
backup first.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VQsMNLYmV7gf2wqLoYRDkm
Arming Instant Wipe now immediately opens a full-screen rehearsal, so the user can
learn the irreversible gesture without risk.

- WipePracticeOverlayView (:security): draws the live finger trail and recognises the
circle with the SAME CircleGestureDetector as the real trigger, but on success only
shows a checkmark and fades out -- it never wipes.
- WipePracticeActivity (:security): a plain AppCompatActivity host, deliberately not an
EdgeToEdgeIDEActivity / the disguise / the terminal, so the real wipe trigger is
never mounted there and a practice gesture cannot destroy anything. Declared in the
  module manifest.
- Launched from the Instant Wipe arm dialog's positive button in securityPrefExts.
- Strings in :resources (worded "nothing is deleted"); two overlay colours in :security.

…igger yet)

The :app side that actually destroys, wired so :security can reach it without an :app
dependency. NOTHING triggers this yet -- the gestures land in PR4 (2/2).

- WipeService / WipeServiceProvider (:security): the entry-point interface, resolved
from any security surface via `(applicationContext as WipeServiceProvider).wipeService`.
- AppWipeService (:app), the WipeService impl:
  * Presents the disguise immediately (reuses Instant Hide's presentation), then runs
WipeManager off the main thread behind it.
  * Teardown before delete: cancel the in-progress Gradle build (via Lookup, null-safe),
stop Termux (ACTION_STOP_SERVICE), IProjectManager.destroy(), close the Recents Room
    DB (real wipe only -- see below); reset lastOpenedProject; SecurityPreferences.clearAll();
    write the .pip/.pip2 markers.
  * Plan: shred PROJECTS_DIR source and the small Recents DB files (sensitive metadata),
fast-delete the regenerable cache dirs within projects (build/.gradle/.cg) and the
Gradle/home caches, so the wipe stays fast on a multi-GB workspace.
- IDEApplication implements WipeServiceProvider.
- SecureShredder.shredTree gains skipDirNames (fast-delete regenerable cache dirs
  instead of overwriting them); unit-tested.

DB handling: the Recents Room DB is closed before its files are shredded, but only in a
REAL wipe -- afterwards the app is neutralized and the IDE (the DB's only user) never runs
again, so the closed cached instance is never touched. The close is skipped in dry-run,
which must not mutate state and where the app keeps running.

Source is shredded; bulk caches are fast-deleted: a single-pass overwrite is not a
guaranteed erase on flash anyway (device encryption is the real at-rest protection), and
shredding GBs would defeat "instant".

…urfaces

Instant Wipe is now live when armed: a single-finger circular sweep on any app surface
triggers AppWipeService (which runs as a dry-run unless /sdcard/Download/CodeOnTheGo.nowipe
is present).

- SecurityController (IDE/editor screens): feeds a CircleGestureDetector in onTouchEvent
when instantWipeEnabled, independently of Instant Hide. The host's existing gesture gate
still excludes the Settings screen, so arming or practicing there cannot wipe.
- CryptogramActivity (the disguise): circle detector in dispatchTouchEvent.
- TerminalActivity (the terminal, which lives outside the EdgeToEdgeIDEActivity hierarchy):
its own dispatchTouchEvent hook; termux-app now depends on :security (no cycle).

All three resolve the :app WipeService through (applicationContext as WipeServiceProvider),
so :security and termux-app keep no :app dependency.

Still to come: PR5 (the .pip/.pip2 tamper tripwire + neutralization-on-launch that keeps a
wiped install on the disguise). The dev-only .nowipe dry-run scaffold must be removed
before GA.

…RE + wipe)

The Termux terminal (TerminalActivity : TermuxActivity) sits outside the
EdgeToEdgeIDEActivity hierarchy that mounts SecurityController, so Instant Hide never
covered it: three-finger tap / face-down / inactivity did nothing there, and FLAG_SECURE
was not applied -- the terminal stayed screenshotable and unmasked in Recents even when
armed. PR4 (2/2) had wired only the Instant Wipe circle there, turning the gap into an
asymmetry (a circle could wipe from the terminal but a three-finger tap could not hide it).

Mount SecurityController directly on TerminalActivity -- forward onResume/onPause/onDestroy
and dispatchTouchEvent, plus applyScreenSecurity, exactly as EdgeToEdgeIDEActivity does.
This brings all Instant Hide triggers, FLAG_SECURE masking, AND the Instant Wipe gesture to
the terminal, and it subsumes the standalone wipe-only hook from PR4 (2/2) (SecurityController
already feeds the circle detector when armed).

This closes a pre-existing ADFA-40 terminal-coverage gap, folded in here since ADFA-6510
had already made the terminal a security surface.

Completes the stack: a wiped install is permanently the "Code Breaker" disguise and can
never return to the (torn-down, data-less) IDE.

- NeutralizationMarker (:security): centralizes the .pip (filesDir) / .pip2 (noBackupFilesDir)
marker paths, isWiped(), mark(), and the tamper signature isTampered() -- no marker AND
blank security prefs AND the stealth launcher alias still enabled (the fingerprint of
clearing app data to strip the markers; the alias enabled-state survives a data wipe, a
fresh install never matches). AppWipeService now writes markers through it.
- SplashActivity: before any IDE UI (and before the hidden-state redirect, since a wipe
  blanks that flag):
  * marker present -> show the disguise, finish.
  * tamper signature -> re-engage the wipe (the /sdcard workspace survives a data clear, so
clearing app data to escape just re-wipes it).
- CryptogramActivity.exitDisguiseMode(): no-op once wiped, so the exit gesture cannot bring
back the neutralized IDE (whose Recents DB connection is already closed).
- Robolectric test for the marker's file logic.

Still required before GA: remove the .nowipe dry-run scaffold (tracked).

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VQsMNLYmV7gf2wqLoYRDkm
On-device testing surfaced a footgun: the launch-time tamper signature (stealth alias
enabled + blank prefs + no marker) cannot distinguish a prior Instant Wipe from a plain
Instant Hide whose app data was cleared. The previous behavior re-ran the destructive
wipe, so a hide-only user who cleared app data would have their /sdcard projects wiped.

Tamper now neutralizes only: show the disguise, no re-wipe. Staying the disguise still
defeats the tamper (the IDE is never revealed) without destroying work that may never have
been meant for wiping. SplashActivity no longer calls WipeService on tamper.

…uncher

Launching the hidden app flashed the real Code On The Go logo for ~200ms before the
disguise appeared. Cause: the OS paints the system starting window from the launched
activity's theme before any app code runs, and all launcher aliases targeted SplashActivity
(AppTheme.Splash shows ic_launcher_foreground). The activity-alias only changes the
home-screen icon, not the splash, so even the "Code Breaker" icon flashed the IDE logo.
This defeated the disguise during the splash -- a pre-existing ADFA-40 gap.

Fix: route the five stealth aliases through a new StealthSplashActivity whose theme
(AppTheme.Splash.Stealth) uses a blank splash icon (a solid splash_bg fill, invisible
against the background -- solid rather than transparent so the system never falls back to
the app icon). It forwards straight to the cryptogram. The default alias keeps SplashActivity
and its branded splash, so normal launches are unchanged.

Verified: aapt confirms the five stealth aliases now target StealthSplashActivity (default
still on SplashActivity), and launching it lands on the cryptogram. The ~200ms splash frame
itself is confirmed visually (adb cannot reliably capture it).

… Wipe)

Instant Wipe opens a practice overlay on arming, but Instant Hide did not -- so users had no
safe way to learn the eyes-free three-finger tap (to hide) or the slow double three-finger
tap (to exit). Arming Instant Hide now opens a two-step rehearsal that recognizes both
gestures with the real detectors but only draws touch feedback; it never engages the disguise
or swaps the launcher.

- HidePracticeOverlayView / HidePracticeActivity (:security): the two-step overlay (tap, then
slow double tap), mirroring WipePracticeOverlayView / WipePracticeActivity.
- Launched from the Instant Hide toggle in securityPrefExts (same mechanism as the wipe
practice, which was verified launching on device).
- Strings in :resources.

Closes a usability gap in ADFA-40's Instant Hide, folded into this stack.

From the pre-review architecture/code pass:

- F01 (blocking): on a REAL wipe, AppWipeService no longer shows the "Instant Wipe
complete" Toast -- it popped over the disguise and announced the wipe to anyone watching
the seized device. The advisory is now dry-run only (QA); a real wipe is log-only.
- F02 (blocking, GA): the .nowipe dry-run override is now gated behind BuildConfig.DEBUG,
so a dropped file can never silently no-op a wipe in a release build.
- F03: documented Instant Wipe in security/README.md (new section + pieces table) and the
  ARCHITECTURE.md :security module row.
- F04: documented the practice overlays under the ADR-0009 Views exception (they do custom
Canvas finger-trail rendering and feed the same detectors as the real triggers).
- F05: split the security-critical tamper decision into a pure isTamperSignature() and
unit-tested it (blank prefs + stealth alias + no marker = tamper; fresh install, present
  marker, and still-armed all reject).

Remaining nits (F06-F09: raw Thread vs app coroutine, dead mark(), main-thread stat in
SplashActivity, no in-progress guard) left as follow-ups.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VQsMNLYmV7gf2wqLoYRDkm
- F06: run the wipe on the app-scoped coroutine (IDEApplication.coroutineScope +
Dispatchers.IO) instead of a raw Thread -- matches the project's async convention and
  still outlives the finished activity.
- F07: remove NeutralizationMarker.mark() (production writes the markers via WipeManager's
markerFiles; mark() was used only by a test). The test now creates the marker directly.
- F08: note in SplashActivity that the isWiped/isTampered checks are on the main thread by
design (cheap stats + one label lookup, must run before any IDE UI).
- F09: AtomicBoolean guard in AppWipeService.trigger() so a second circle on the just-shown
disguise can't start a concurrent wipe before the first blanks the prefs.

…ant-wipe

Brings the ADFA-40 base up to date (it had stage merged into it, so PR #2137 was BEHIND and
conflicting). The only conflict was in TerminalActivity.kt imports: kept both the Instant Wipe
SecurityController import and the stage-added terminal-session imports (CommandIntentRouter,
TerminalSessionFactory) -- no logic conflict. Merged tree compiles (:app incl. termux) and
:security tests pass.

📝 Summary
  • Adds an optional, off-by-default Instant Wipe feature. A single-finger circular sweep triggers the wipe when Instant Wipe is armed.
  • Adds a confirmation dialog and a practice screen. The practice screen detects the gesture but cannot trigger a wipe.
  • Adds workspace cleanup, teardown, preference reset, and neutralization markers. The app redirects to the Code Breaker disguise after a wipe or detected tampering.
  • Adds stealth launcher aliases and a blank splash screen. Adds launcher-alias reconciliation and gesture rehearsal for Instant Hide.
  • Adds unit tests for circle detection, wipe handling, secure shredding, neutralization markers, and alias reconciliation. The author also reports device checks, but device testing was not complete. Some teardown and practice UI components lack unit tests.
  • Risks: A real wipe is destructive and cannot be reliably reversed. Secure overwrite is best-effort and does not guarantee physical erasure on flash storage. The author says the debug-only /sdcard/Download/CodeOnTheGo.nowipe dry-run override must be removed before GA.
  • Merge dependency: This change depends on the :security module from PR #2133 and should not merge before that PR.

The change adds Instant Wipe preferences, gesture detection, practice screens, and app-owned wipe execution. It adds marker-based neutralization checks and updates activity redirection and launcher alias handling for wiped or tampered installs.

On stage the launcher component is .activities.SplashActivity. This
branch moved the launcher filter to a new .DefaultAliasActivity alias, so
every update changed the launcher component, and a launcher that keys a
pinned home-screen icon by component could drop it (review of #2133).

The activity class is now LauncherActivity, and the default alias takes
the old name, .activities.SplashActivity, so the component a pinned icon
points at still exists and is still the launcher. The stealth aliases
target LauncherActivity. Mechanical otherwise: the class, its references
and the tests follow the rename; `am start -n .../.activities.SplashActivity`
still resolves, to the alias.

The disguise set only the "Code Breaker" label on its task description,
so Recents fell back to the application icon and showed the IDE logo on
the card (review of #2133). The task description now carries this
device's stealth alias icon, read from the alias by
LauncherAliasManager.stealthIcon, and CryptogramActivity declares a
stealth icon and label of its own for anything that reads the activity's.

The manifest icon is the first variant: a device whose hash picks
another shows that one in Recents and the first only where the system
reads the activity's own icon. Not checked on a device.

Review of #2133 found the feature covered only screens that extend
EdgeToEdgeIDEActivity and only the entry points that checked the flag:

- Typing did not reset the 60s idle timer: soft-keyboard taps reach the
keyboard's window and hardware keys never reached the touch hook, so a
typing user was hidden mid-edit and lost unsaved work (CRITICAL).
- The terminal got no triggers and no FLAG_SECURE.
- ExternalFileInstallActivity and CrashHandlerActivity opened IDE UI
while hidden. So could com.termux.app.TermuxActivity, which is
exported and which the review did not list.
- Face-down fired on the first reading, so a phone held overhead while
lying on your back hid the IDE every time it opened.
- The floating windows and the IDE's notifications stayed visible over
  the disguise.
- A redirect while hidden cleared the disguise's task, resetting its
  puzzle (CodeRabbit).

InstantHide.register, called from IDEApplication, now mounts a
SecurityController on every activity through ActivityLifecycleCallbacks
and wraps the window callback, so touches, keys and mouse events all
reach it whatever the activity's base class. While hidden, the same
callbacks send every activity but the disguise to it; entry points that
do work in onCreate also call InstantHide.redirectIfHidden and return.
The redirect reuses a running disguise (CLEAR_TOP | SINGLE_TOP).

The idle timer, when it runs out with the soft keyboard showing or a
dialog or popup holding the focus, starts again instead of hiding; a
phone left like that hides when its screen times out. FaceDownDetector
arms only on a face-up or upright reading. A hide closes the floating
windows and masks the notifications: ordinary ones are removed, a
foreground service's is replaced by a neutral one, and GradleBuildService
and TermuxService build the neutral one themselves while hidden. The
security Settings screen opts out of the triggers through
InstantHide.GesturesExempt. The armed and hidden flags go through
HideState so tests can stand in for the preferences.

Each new test in InstantHideTest and FaceDownDetectorTest fails with its
fix reverted. Not checked on a device.

…stant-wipe

Brings #2133's review fixes up the stack. Resolutions beyond the textual
conflicts:

- The stealth aliases keep targeting StealthSplashActivity; the default
  alias is .activities.SplashActivity, targeting LauncherActivity.
- SecurityController feeds the wipe circle detector next to the hide
triggers; the wipe flag joins HideState as wipeArmed.
- TerminalActivity no longer mounts its own SecurityController: every
activity now gets one from InstantHide, and a second would run the
  triggers twice.
- HidePracticeActivity and WipePracticeActivity are
InstantHide.GesturesExempt. They relied on being plain activities to
keep the real triggers off, which no longer holds.
- StealthSplashActivity starts the disguise with InstantHide.disguiseIntent,
so tapping the stealth icon while the disguise runs keeps the puzzle.
- LauncherAliasReconcileTest names the renamed default alias.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VKUthHVokuWKgP3ACLBii7
Only LauncherActivity and the disguise checked the wipe markers. A wiped
install leaves the hidden flag set until app data is cleared, and the
tamper case clears it, so a deep link, an opened .cgp or .cgt file, a
crash report or the exported terminal could still open IDE UI on a
neutralized install. The review of #2133 asked for every exported
activity; it was checked at this stack's tip.

InstantHide.redirectIfHidden now also redirects when HideState says the
install is neutralized (NeutralizationMarker.isWiped or isTampered), so
the lifecycle callbacks cover every activity; LauncherActivity's own
marker check folds into that call. The markers are read only when the
hidden flag is clear.

A wipe now closes the floating windows and masks the notifications as a
hide does (InstantHide.hideOutsideActivities), before the disguise
starts; the teardown removes the build and terminal notifications only
later. The new InstantHideTest case fails with the marker check reverted.
Not checked on a device.

ADFA-4930 moved each project's build output out of the projects folder,
to noBackupFilesDir/gradle-build/<name>-<hash>. The wipe still covered
only the projects folder, the IDE and Gradle homes and the Recents DB,
so the compiled app, its APKs and merged resources survived it, in
folders named after the projects. Quick Build's scratch, in
noBackupFilesDir/quickbuild-scratch, was missed the same way.

Both are now fast-delete targets, beside the other regenerable caches.
ADFA-4930's startup sweep would remove orphaned trees too, but only when
the process restarts, which a wiped install showing the disguise does
not do. AppWipeServiceTest pins both folders and fails without them.

folder and deletes what is inside it. The shredder checked isDirectory
and exists, which follow links too, so it recursed into a linked folder
and overwrote a linked file. A link in a project, or in the build output
the previous commit adds as a target ("a build can leave symlinks in its
output", ADFA-4930), could make the wipe destroy files outside it, such
as the photos a project's assets folder links to.

SecureShredder.deleteTree walks with java.nio's walkFileTree, which does
not follow links, and deletes each link itself. The fast delete and the
shredder's skipped cache folders use it, and shredTree removes a link
before looking at it. Each new test in SecureShredderTest and
WipeManagerTest fails with its fix reverted: the linked photo is deleted,
or emptied through the link.

Every IDE activity keeps its screen-off receiver while paused, so one
ACTION_SCREEN_OFF reaches each open screen. The first hides and finishes;
the others are not finishing yet, so each hid again, restarting the
disguise with CLEAR_TASK and resetting its puzzle (CodeRabbit, #2133).
triggerInstantHide now returns once the disguise is engaged; the
lifecycle redirect already sends any screen still shown to it. The new
InstantHideTest case fails without the guard (two hides, not one).

Also fixes a README sentence CodeRabbit flagged.

…n keyboard close

The disguise vanished about a second after a hide when the IDE had been
opened from its launcher icon. A hide disables that launcher alias, and
Android then removes the task the alias started. The disguise ran in
that task (NEW_TASK | CLEAR_TASK, same affinity), so it went too and
the user was left on the home screen. Seen on a Pixel 6 Pro with the
screen-off and the idle triggers ("Removing task" in the log 0.85 s
after the hide).

- CryptogramActivity gets a task affinity of its own.
- InstantHide.showDisguise starts it, removes the app's other tasks
(the IDE's task would otherwise stay in Recents behind it), and
finishes the calling screen. The hide and the while-hidden redirect
both use it, so an entry point's task is removed too.
- The exit gesture removes the disguise's task instead of leaving its
  card in Recents.

The idle timer could hide 0-60 s after the soft keyboard closed. The
key that closes the keyboard goes to the keyboard, so the window saw
no input, and the timer still counted from the last touch before
typing. A dialog closing had the same flaw. The keyboard opening or
closing (seen on a global layout) and the window getting the focus
back now restart the minute.

Tests: the disguise's affinity; a hide and a redirect remove the other
tasks and keep the disguise's; closing the keyboard and getting the
focus back each give a full minute. All five fail with the fixes
undone.

Brings in the fix that keeps the disguise up after a hide and restarts
the idle minute when the keyboard closes. Conflicts: InstantHide keeps
the neutralized check and hideOutsideActivities beside showDisguise;
SecurityController keeps the wipe trigger and drops the notification
mask, which hideOutsideActivities already does.

… showDisguise

The wipe started the disguise the way a hide did, in the IDE's task, so
it had the same defect: the wipe swaps to the stealth alias, Android
removes the task the default alias started, and the disguise goes with
it. StealthSplashActivity, the stealth aliases' target, left its own
empty task in Recents beside the disguise's once the disguise had a
task of its own. Both now use InstantHide.showDisguise, which removes
the app's other tasks. The splash skips it when the lifecycle redirect
has already shown the disguise.

A real wipe logged the absolute path of every target, project
directories included, so logcat kept the layout of the user's projects
after the projects were gone. A real wipe now logs only the counts; the
dry run, where QA needs the list, still logs each path. Raised by
CodeRabbit on #2137.

Test: a real wipe logs no target path and a dry run logs each one; it
fails with the fix undone.

Instant Hide swaps the launcher entry's name and icon, but the app's
name is fixed at install. Seen on a Pixel 6 Pro while hidden: the App
info page, two taps from the disguise's Recents card, is titled "Code
on the Go", and TalkBack reads that card as "Code on the Go Code
Breaker". No code can rename an installed app, so the README lists
these as known limits.

Brings in the README's known-limits section. Conflict: both branches
added a README section at the same place; both kept. The .nowipe entry
now also says a real wipe logs only the counts (b0ce82a).

119-125: Trivial · Stability & Availability · Quick win

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Add a guard against overly broad wipe targets.

WipeManager recursively deletes every secureTargets and fastDeleteTargets entry without validating it. The paths come from static Environment fields. If one resolves to a filesystem root, a short path, or a parent of the marker files, the wipe deletes far more than intended. A parent of the markers also deletes the markers written at Lines 110-117, which removes the durable wipe signal.

Skip any target that has no parent directory or that contains a marker file.

🛡️ Proposed guard
- var shredded = 0
-		plan.secureTargets.forEach { shredded += SecureShredder.shredTree(it, skipDirNames = plan.secureTargetSkipDirs) }
-
- var deleted = 0
-		plan.fastDeleteTargets.forEach { target ->
-			if (SecureShredder.deleteTree(target)) deleted++
-		}
+ var shredded = 0
+ plan.secureTargets
+			.filterNot { it.isUnsafeTarget(plan.markerFiles) }
+			.forEach { shredded += SecureShredder.shredTree(it, skipDirNames = plan.secureTargetSkipDirs) }
+
+ var deleted = 0
+ plan.fastDeleteTargets
+			.filterNot { it.isUnsafeTarget(plan.markerFiles) }
+			.forEach { target -> if (SecureShredder.deleteTree(target)) deleted++ }

Add this helper inside WipeManager:

/** A root, an unresolvable path, or a parent of a marker must never be deleted recursively. */
private fun File.isUnsafeTarget(markers: List<File>): Boolean {
val self = runCatching { canonicalFile }.getOrNull() ?: return true
if (self.parentFile == null) return true
	return markers.any { runCatching { it.canonicalFile.startsWith(self) }.getOrDefault(true) }
}

Based on learnings: "In recursive directory-deletion utilities ... always guard against being invoked on the filesystem root or other overly broad paths."

The alias repair (ADFA-6507) checked only the default alias. A hide
disables the default alias first, so a PackageManager call that throws
midway leaves no icon. The disguise read "default off" as "stealth on"
and left the hidden app with no launcher icon. A restore enables the
default alias first, so the same failure leaves both icons. The IDE
read "default on" as nothing to repair and left the Code Breaker icon
beside the real one, where a tap on it closes the IDE.

LauncherAliasManager.reconcile now compares every alias with the state
a completed swap leaves, and redoes the swap when they differ. While
the disguise shows it can only enable the stealth alias. The swap order
is unchanged: CodeRabbit proposed enabling the stealth alias first, but
then the same failure would leave the real icon beside the disguise,
which is what ADFA-6507 chose the order to prevent.

Both callers, CryptogramActivity and LauncherActivity, use it.
getCurrentLauncherLabel, the tamper check's input, shares the
enabled-alias helper with no change in behavior. The README and the
class doc said the stealth aliases target LauncherActivity; they target
StealthSplashActivity.

Tests (Robolectric, real component states): from each launcher state
(only the real icon, only the stealth icon, both, neither) the disguise
ends with one stealth icon and the IDE with only the real one. With the
old check the disguise fails on "no icon" and the IDE on "both icons".
A fresh install's aliases are left untouched. These replace the truth
table for the removed reconcileAliasAction.

StealthSplashActivity was exported with no intent filter, so any
installed app could start it by name, with no permission. It shows the
disguise, and the disguise's alias repair then makes the stealth icon
the launcher's only one. With Instant Hide and Instant Wipe both off,
that is the tamper fingerprint (blank security prefs, stealth alias
enabled), so the install stayed the disguise for good: every entry
point redirected to it and the exit gesture did nothing. Since
cad0788 the start also removed the IDE's tasks.

It is no longer exported. The stealth aliases that target it are, so
the launcher still opens it.

Checked on a Pixel 6 Pro (Android 16), starting it with am start from
the shell, which, like another app, may not start an unexported
activity:
- bed36d6: the IDE's task was removed, the stealth alias became the
only icon, and starting LauncherActivity then showed the disguise.
- This commit: "Permission Denial ... not exported". After a real hide,
a tap on the Code Breaker icon in the app drawer, and a launcher-style
am start of the stealth alias, each opened the disguise.

The other exported activities (LauncherActivity, DeepLinkActivity,
ExternalFileInstallActivity, CrashHandlerActivity) show the disguise
only while the app is hidden or neutralized.

@coderabbitai On the review-body suggestion to guard against overly broad wipe targets (WipeManager.kt lines 119-125): not adding it, because no target can be broad today. Every target is a fixed app folder. The projects folder is always <shared storage>/CodeOnTheGoProjects (Environment.java:157), and Environment.setProjectDir, the only setter, has no callers. AppWipeService skips unset folders (listOfNotNull). If the projects folder ever becomes configurable, the guard belongs in that change.

@davidschachterADFA Agreed. I verified that Environment.init sets the projects folder to <shared storage>/CodeOnTheGoProjects. I found no Java or Kotlin callers of Environment.setProjectDir. AppWipeService.buildPlan also excludes unset Environment folders through listOfNotNull.

I withdraw the broad-target guard suggestion for this PR. If a future change makes wipe targets configurable, target validation belongs in that change.

#2133 was rebased onto stage (4d1c978). Its changes are the ones this
branch already had, so each of the 18 conflicts was ADFA-40's version of
lines this branch later edited. Resolved to the tree a merge of stage
