Replace Mermaid.js with Pele for the existing Mermaid flowcharts while preserving source-first loading: the server renders a normal copyable code block, then a lazy diagram component replaces it with SVG on the client. Loading a diagram stays local to that block, so article navigation and sponsors remain visible.

Install and bundle impact

Metric Previous Mermaid.js 11.14.0 Pele 1.12.0 · flowcharts only Difference
Renderer’s declared runtime dependencies 21 0 21 fewer
Resolved package versions in the lockfile 1,661 1,614 47 fewer: 48 removed, 1 added
First flowchart load · gzip 187.3 KB 62.7 KB 124.7 KB less (66.5%)
First flowchart load · Brotli 160.5 KB 55.1 KB 105.5 KB less (65.7%)

Install counts come from the lockfile diff and count unique package/version records, not disk usage. Bundle sizes are isolated production-minified renderer builds with shared React/UI excluded equally. The Mermaid measurement includes its core, flowchart, and required static chunks, excluding unused diagram chunks; these are not total page sizes. Both implementations defer the diagram engine on posts without diagrams.

  • Register only flowcharts through pele/core and pele/diagrams/flowchart. The isolated diagram component is about 63 KB gzip; posts without diagrams do not download it.
  • Use the site's light/dark color and font tokens through Pele's CSS variables. Theme switches update the existing SVG.
  • Let Pele handle container resizing and font measurement. Zoom, diagram links, and remote images are disabled.
  • Reorder declarations in two article diagrams to improve layout; their nodes and connections are unchanged.

Only flowcharts are registered, matching all five diagrams currently checked into this repository. Other diagram types require an explicit registration.

Before / after

Actual Chrome captures of every current diagram block. Before uses the base commit's Mermaid renderer and article source; after uses this branch's Pele renderer and article source. Both use the same site CSS, Inter fonts, and container widths. Images are cropped to the complete diagram block.

Validation

  • All five current article diagrams render at desktop and phone widths.
  • Three focused regression tests pass, including SSR source fallback, delayed lazy loading, persistent sidebar, theme changes, resizing, errors, unique IDs, and cleanup.
  • Repository-wide TypeScript and lint checks pass.
  • Full unit suite: 676 passed, 5 skipped. Desktop suite: 20 passed, 1 skipped.
  • Independent GPT-6.1 Sol adversarial review covered Pele documentation, theming, accessibility, and rendering edge cases; reported findings were fixed.
  • Full pnpm test did not finish cleanly: the chat suite had one unrelated timeout in harness-tests/core/workflow-tool-boundary.test.ts (2,277 passed, 6 skipped). All three tests in that file passed on an isolated rerun. The initial full run also timed out in the new loading regression; that regression passed on the complete unit-suite retry and in isolation.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Mermaid diagrams now load on demand, with readable source code displayed while the diagrams load.
    • Diagrams adapt to light and dark themes and fit desktop and phone screens.
    • Diagrams are rendered without zoom controls.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved diagram rendering across blog articles, including recovery when diagrams appear in previously hidden sections.

Walkthrough

The Mermaid renderer now uses Pele instead of Mermaid. Mermaid diagrams load lazily, with source code shown during loading. The change adds theme styling and tests for rendering, lifecycle, and loading behavior.

Changes: Mermaid rendering

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pele diagram mounting
package.json, src/components/markdown/MermaidBlock.tsx
The project replaces the Mermaid dependency with Pele. MermaidBlock registers Pele’s flowchart renderer, mounts diagrams into a container with links, images, and zoom disabled, and destroys them during cleanup.
Lazy loading and fallback
src/components/markdown/CodeBlock.tsx, src/styles/app.css
CodeBlock lazy-loads MermaidBlock and shows plain code during client-only or suspense loading. The styles define Pele color and font variables for light and dark themes.
Diagram rendering validation
src/blog/tanstack-db-1.0-rc1-going-all-in-on-oracles.md, src/blog/your-mcp-your-way.md, tests/mermaid-rendering.test.ts
Two articles reorder diagram edge declarations without changing their connections. Tests cover article diagrams, rendering and cleanup, theme changes, error recovery, sanitization, and lazy loading.

Merge Risk: Low · up to ee35f

If the diagram chunk fails to load, for example on a flaky network or after a deploy, the copyable source can disappear or an error boundary can take over instead of the source staying visible. This affects only pages with diagrams and only in a failure case, so it is a bounded follow-up rather than a merge blocker.

Minor · Stability & Availability · Quick win

Keep the code fallback when the diagram chunk fails to load.

If the dynamic import rejects, React.lazy sends the error to the nearest error boundary. React.Suspense does not retain CodeBlockView. A failed chunk request therefore removes the copyable diagram source instead of leaving it available. Handle the import failure at this block and render CodeBlockView as the error fallback.
