fix: retain live query collections across page window changes - #2316
Numbered pagination now keeps an adapter-owned live-query Collection when only its ordered outer .limit() or .offset() changes. The existing query API moves the same window and retains its compiled plan and source subscriptions across React, Preact, Vue, Solid, Angular, and Svelte.
This fixes#2291 through the existing bounds. For example, both page parameters remain part of this React query's identity:
useLiveQuery({queryKey: ['orders',page,pageSize],query: (q)=>q.from({order: orders}).orderBy(({ order })=>order.id).limit(pageSize).offset(page*pageSize),})
The shared resolver calls the existing setWindow path for eligible changes. React and Preact apply moves after commit. Every adapter defers the actual move until any current Collection publication ends. This preserves committed rows during abandoned renders and prevents reentrant moves from publication callbacks.
Reuse requires a structured ordered plan, the same source objects and Collection options, and finite nonnegative safe-integer target bounds. Other query changes follow normal compilation. DbClient and Suspense retain their shared-result identity rules. An unchanged explicit React or Preact key still keeps its authored query input.
Integration with main preserves React's Suspense cache identity, which includes Collection options. Solid keeps authored query inputs tracked, while Collection startup and window resolution remain untracked. Borrowed rows remain isolated from adapter-owned changes.
The window work also fixes TopK's handling of large and negative bounds. TopK retains exact authored widths and computes differences only over installed absolute ranks. Neighboring fixes preserve Angular's current list/findOne projection during reactive changes and avoid React 18 layout-effect diagnostics during supported server rendering. Shared framework conformance oracles check projection through every adapter.
🔬 Oracle Coverage
The coverage map names the owners and receiving paths. Independent models check rows, keyed state, Collection identity, subscription ownership, result shape, and rank selection at their specified checkpoints.
Law: The maintainer decision for useLiveQuery: move an offset/limit page window without rebuilding the live query #2291 treats eligible bound changes as moves of the same adapter-owned window. Existing identity and atomic-publication laws apply. TopK retains omitted authored bounds and selects installed absolute ranks within the requested interval. Public adapter types determine list/findOne shape. Supported SSR must not acquire a client-layout diagnostic from the commit hook.
Reach: Original campaigns reach ordinary/pending/publication states 13/7/9 times per lane, with separate React and Preact receiving counts. Numeric campaigns reach both declared states in 100 histories. Each new projection campaign completes 28 replays and 6 generated histories per framework registration. Each negative-window path reaches all eight declared states in 100 generated histories plus one replay. SSR compares 840 renders across 24 cells, plus two disabled replays. The linked framework, SSR, and fix records retain exact counts.
RED: All six framework drivers rejected Collection replacement before the adapter fix. The React command is pnpm --filter @tanstack/react-db exec vitest run tests/conformance.test.tsx -t 'window histor' --coverage.enabled=false --typecheck.enabled=false. Publication-callback histories rejected synchronous moves. Partial-width histories rejected rounded widths, while large-bound moves failed to return. The expanded shape and negative-window owners failed on unchanged d4ca8d7 before their fixes. The evidence links preserve exact commands, snapshots, and failure categories.
GREEN: The integrated snapshot against main 035a5260e passes 10,308 selected tests, with one existing Angular TODO. Subsequent verification passes full IVM (664), core cache/options (6,584), React (1,907), and Svelte hook/conformance (162) tests. Those runs overlap the earlier selection. Svelte cache, descriptor, SSR, and hydration checks also pass 236 tests. Coverage includes core/replay, all six framework receivers, React SSR, lifecycle checks, and production warning erasure. Package types, source lint, pnpm lint:changed, formatting, and whitespace checks pass. Vitest jobs ran serially with at most two workers. The second integration against main a3c4d0676 passes 13,715 selected core tests, full Solid (358), React (301), Preact (160), Vue (131), Angular (86), and Svelte (128). The isolated bundle suite passes 19 tests after its adapter import inventory correction. All seven TypeScript package checks pass, including Preact. CI is green on 189b7eec4: 25 successful checks and one skipped CodeRabbit check. The final Svelte checker reports zero errors and warnings.
Mutant: Checks reject unsafe source/options reuse, render/publication-time moves, rounded widths, permanently clamped bounds, and missing demand signals. Restoring the original SSR effect fails all six seeded React 18 campaigns. Separate restored Angular projection, relative-slice, size, and leading-count faults fail the promised observations. Original generated traces pass after restoration.
Limits: Evidence covers bounded query grammars, numeric rows, controlled acquisition settlement, and specified native or settled framework cuts. It does not establish arbitrary schedules, real-provider completeness, a general CPU bound, or new include-publication semantics. The negative-window extension excludes fractional bounds, negative widths, multiple groups, varying prefix predicates, and downstream acquisition. Successful shrink-chain replay can execute extra histories. The coverage map records that mechanics gap, and these runs do not establish singleton replay.
Historical qualification: Initial-loading, Collection-option, and Preact aborted-render coverage entered after the first production edit. Later GREEN and mutant results do not retroactively satisfy that original oracle-first gate. R2-5/G1 remains disclosed for maintainer disposition. No oracle run budget decreased.
Guarded replay selects the originating framework driver. Both retained React registrations now use the current derived-identity API. Their historical labels do not imply a separate dependency-list API. The replay audit records 21 passing routes, 63 protocol checks, and rejected wrong-driver controls.
Two earlier local reviewers found no actionable issue in their reviewed snapshot. Five CodeRabbit findings have dispositions: two earlier fixes, two executable refutations, and the latest timeout fix. That review covers f9d0e9029. A later review on 4d9929159 adds a grammar correction, an omitted Preact typecheck, and a negative-limit contract question. The grammar correction and Preact typecheck are complete. CodeRabbit paused after 4d9929159, so its review does not cover the final head. Two local source reviews and the combined tests cover the Solid merge resolution. Negative limits remain a maintainer contract question outside the accepted nonnegative-width oracle law. The fix record preserves the exact same-path counterexample on main and this branch.
The timeout fix also covers a separately identified sibling in the window campaigns. Registration probes check 66 cells across multipliers 1, 2, and 3. Only the timeouts change, and their default remains 30 seconds. These probes check registration configuration, not elapsed completion. The actual conformance campaigns pass in all six frameworks after the fix.

The new main baseline changes the compression comparison. The affected packages now grow slightly in aggregate. Other scenarios range from −22 to +31 gzip bytes and −15 to +162 Brotli bytes.
The command is node scripts/size-compare.mjs --base a3c4d0676 --exact-base --packages db-ivm,db,react-db,preact-db,vue-db,solid-db,angular-db. Svelte uses each revision's Svelte Vite plugin with the same minification and compression settings. Tests and evidence do not enter production bundles.
The reductions share ordering recipes, signed output projection, and batch consolidation. They remove duplicate intermediate state, forwarding methods, and observer options. Eligibility guards, source ownership, error propagation, commit timing, and public operator signatures remain intact. The linked fix record preserves the exact measurements and review scope.

🚀 Release Impact
This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).
The changeset patches core, IVM, and all six adapters. Exact React 18 aliases are development-only receiving dependencies.
Changing finite outer limit/offset bounds moves the existing adapter-owned
Collection across six frameworks without new hook API. Preserve exact TopK
bounds and avoid React 18 server layout-effect diagnostics.
Law: Maintainer decision for #2291 retains the same finite outer window;
the TopK API preserves omitted authored bounds; supported SSR adds no
client-layout diagnostic. Existing cache, identity and publication laws apply.
Reach: Six shared framework drivers cover page/plan/source/options, loading
and publication histories; React/Preact receive speculative renders. Numeric
profiles reach 100 histories per cell. SSR measures 840 generated/example
render comparisons across 24 cells, plus two fixed disabled replays.
RED: Original adapter replacement fails retention on unchanged production;
TopK has row-assertion and timeout controls; React 18 reports 13 expected
pre-edit diagnostic assertion failures with 38 neighboring passes.
GREEN: Original broad validation, fresh oracle reviews, 1,251 final integrated-tree
tests and 20 affected Vue/Solid histories pass, with types and changed lint.
Mutant: Unsafe source/options reuse, render/publication mutation, rounded or
clamped numeric bounds and the original SSR effect are rejected. Direct
seed/path replays are recorded in the durable oracle evidence.
Limits: Finite structured adapter-owned windows; shared caches and provider
completeness keep their existing owners. Initial-loading/options/Preact
coverage entered after the first production edit; that historical process
gap remains disclosed, not retroactively repaired.

Server-safe effect selection and SSR checks packages/react-db/src/useLiveQuery.ts, packages/react-db/package.json, packages/react-db/tests/ssr-effects-*
The hook selects useEffect on the server and useLayoutEffect in the browser. SSR checks run against React 18.3.1 and React 19.2.4 and inspect diagnostics, results, and cleanup.
The page-window reuse change looks sound overall. One TopK edge case remains: a negative limit combined with a positive offset can emit rows for a window that should be empty. Fix the guard before or soon after merge. The remaining comments are documentation wording and validation-record gaps.

Explanation
[#2291] Objective: numbered pagination moves an existing live-query Collection to a new offset/limit window when only the outer .limit() or .offset() changes. Implementation: resolveLiveQueryValue in packages/db/src/live-query-options.ts reuses the previous Collection for eligible changes. Eligibility requires a structured ordered plan, the same source objects and Collection options, and finite nonnegative safe-integer target bounds. The reuse path calls the existing setWindow path. Other query, source, or option changes follow normal compilation. React and Preact apply window moves in a commit-time layout effect, so the hook no longer splits the window between .limit().offset() and a caller-owned effect. All adapters defer moves until current Collection publication ends. Tests: window-history-oracle.ts checks retained Collection identity, ordered rows, keyed state, Collection options, and upstream subscription counts. Framework window-render oracles (React, Preact) check that speculative renders do not move the committed window or start acquisition. TopK numeric and negative-window oracles check output rows and size for moved windows.
Alternative API: the issue proposes a window option or a page mode in #2235 as examples. The PR uses the existing query API instead. The issue does not require a specific API, so this choice satisfies the objective.
Limits: The issue benchmark reports timing for setWindow (0.8-1.1 ms per page). The PR does not report benchmark timings and does not claim a general CPU bound. The PR also does not change on-demand materialize include publication timing. The issue describes that behavior as context, not as an acceptance criterion. No unmet coding requirement appears in the linked objectives.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Changes tied directly to the #2291 window path:
packages/db/src/live-query-options.ts: shared window-move resolver, pooling through one path, and window-object query-key hashing.
packages/react-db/src/useLiveQuery.ts and packages/preact-db/src/useLiveQuery.ts: commit-time window moves and abandoned-render handling.
Vue, Solid, Svelte, and Angular useLiveQuery or injectLiveQuery: adoption of the shared resolver with retained previous Collection.
packages/db-ivm TopK and ordered-window operators: moveWindow, absolute-rank selection, and large or negative bound handling needed for retained windows.
Conformance drivers and contract updates: parameter observation cuts needed by the new oracles.
Changes adjacent to the objective, stated in the PR and linked to the same path:
React server-safe effect selection: needed because the new commit-time layout effect must not emit a React 18 SSR diagnostic.
Angular projection preservation for list/findOne: stated as a neighboring fix during reactive changes that use the shared resolver.
Ordering operator refactors (orderBy, groupedOrderBy, ordered-window, topKState, topKWithFractionalIndex, groupedTopKWithFractionalIndex): these route through the window-setting machinery. The PR describes them as size reductions. They are not required by #2291, but they share the code path that the window move uses.
Suspense error storage keyed by client: the PR states that Suspense shared-result identity rules are retained. The PR does not explain this error-keying change in detail.
Removal of exported db-ivm helpers (indexedValue, getValue, getIndex, HRange, diffHalfOpen, handleMoveIn, handleMoveOut): these are internal support changes. They are part of a patch-release changeset for db-ivm, so downstream use of these exports is not confirmed.
Validation and evidence changes: conformance tests, oracle infrastructure, replay manifests, failure-fidelity helpers, reach fixtures, and review records support the implementation and its validation. The react18 and react-dom18 development aliases are test receivers only.
No change is demonstrated to be unrelated to #2291. The adjacent changes are stated as supporting work, so no FAIL is supported.

Each row aggregates the 14.4 scale/index/write-mode configurations of that query; per-configuration tables below.
Runner: node v24.8.0, linux 7.0.0-1017-azure, AMD EPYC 9V45 96-Core Processor. Timings on shared CI runners are noisy; treat small deltas as indicative only.
Law: ORC-007 and the guarded-replay protocol require a named owner and
exact seed/path execution for each registered property.
Reach: All 18 new routes report completed, nonfailed witness records.
RED: The unchanged manifest fails its missing-owner assertion while 40
neighboring replay checks pass.
GREEN: All 41 replay checks and all 18 seed-2291/path-0 guarded commands
pass, with core types, ESLint and changed-file oracle lint.
Mutant: The original incomplete manifest is rejected; existing guard
controls also reject absent or altered replay execution.
Limits: This repairs routing only. Models, histories, production, run
budgets and existing receiving-path limits remain unchanged. React is the
canonical guarded route for the shared framework properties.

🎯 Changes
Numbered pagination now keeps an adapter-owned live-query Collection when only its ordered outer
.limit()or.offset()changes. The existing query API moves the same window and retains its compiled plan and source subscriptions across React, Preact, Vue, Solid, Angular, and Svelte. This fixes #2291 through the existing bounds. For example, both page parameters remain part of this React query's identity:
The shared resolver calls the existing
setWindowpath for eligible changes. React and Preact apply moves after commit. Every adapter defers the actual move until any current Collection publication ends. This preserves committed rows during abandoned renders and prevents reentrant moves from publication callbacks.Reuse requires a structured ordered plan, the same source objects and Collection options, and finite nonnegative safe-integer target bounds. Other query changes follow normal compilation. DbClient and Suspense retain their shared-result identity rules. An unchanged explicit React or Preact key still keeps its authored query input.
Integration with main preserves React's Suspense cache identity, which includes Collection options. Solid keeps authored query inputs tracked, while Collection startup and window resolution remain untracked. Borrowed rows remain isolated from adapter-owned changes.
The window work also fixes TopK's handling of large and negative bounds. TopK retains exact authored widths and computes differences only over installed absolute ranks. Neighboring fixes preserve Angular's current list/findOne projection during reactive changes and avoid React 18 layout-effect diagnostics during supported server rendering. Shared framework conformance oracles check projection through every adapter.

The adapter record, fresh oracle review, numeric record, and SSR record preserve the original experiments. The preparation audit records earlier simplification decisions. The latest fix and size record records the final source hashes, fixes, validation, and review dispositions.
That review covers
f9d0e9029. A later review on4d9929159adds a grammar correction, an omitted Preact typecheck, and a negative-limit contract question. The grammar correction and Preact typecheck are complete. CodeRabbit paused after4d9929159, so its review does not cover the final head.

Final measurements compare exact main
a3c4d0676with production minification, external dependencies, gzip level 9, and Brotli quality 11.The new main baseline changes the compression comparison. The affected packages now grow slightly in aggregate. Other scenarios range from −22 to +31 gzip bytes and −15 to +162 Brotli bytes.
The command is
node scripts/size-compare.mjs --base a3c4d0676 --exact-base --packages db-ivm,db,react-db,preact-db,vue-db,solid-db,angular-db.
