Building a pooled view during a render subscribed its equality partition to the source without deferral, starting an idle eager source. The partition now subscribes with deferred acquisition and resumes when a view gets a listener; a view's preload already preloads the source. Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>

Suspense created its live-query Collection started, so its first preload resumed deferred acquisition one microtask later and a source that already held the rows suspended once. Without a DbClient, Suspense now creates the Collection unstarted and preloads it during render. Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>

State the law in the live-query architecture, normative laws, and executable contracts; move the synchronous observation cut to the first subscriber or preload that starts the sync run; add the glossary term, coverage rows, and changeset; fix the guide's startSync default. Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>
An on-demand first value is the ready first page or a value with no rows: React and Svelte publish before the hook subscribes, Vue after. Add the preloaded-collection-first-paint scenario for the documented route-loader pattern, where a preloaded limited live query shows its ready first page on the first value in every framework without another request. …ovider work Electric live-query tests created live queries with startSync: true and expected snapshot requests with no consumer; they now subscribe. The persisted siblings are created unstarted and preloaded, so the retained demand still makes them ready before the preload returns. Type the pooled oracle's query through the internal builder. …up, and ready reads A review found four ways a deferring live query acquired or stalled: - a source status change restarted deferred demand when a peer started the source; - a source truncate reloaded deferred demand; - cleanup reset the subscriber-or-preload state while an acquiring subscriber survived, so the restarted query never loaded; - toArrayWhenReady and stateWhenReady returned local rows without ever requesting the rest. Guard the restart and truncate paths, keep the state for a surviving acquiring subscriber, and count those reads as a preload. Extend the deferred-acquisition oracle with peer and truncate commands and pinned cleanup and ready-read blocks, bound the preloaded-collection preload so its mutant fails an assertion, refresh stale comments, and record the review. Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>
A second review found that one source whose start throws on resumption kept the other sources deferred and made preload() throw synchronously. Run every resume listener before rethrowing, reject from the preload entry points, and start the source before a subscription stops deferring. Preload a cleaned-up Suspense collection during render, which also fixes a rerender that showed no rows on main. Make the on-demand first-value check exact, fix a stale test comment, and record the review. Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>

Allow failed acquisition resumption to retry.
If a resume listener throws while starting a source, this method leaves subscriberOrPreload true and rethrows. The affected source subscription remains deferred because resumeDeferredAcquisition() clears its flag only after the callback returns. A later preload skips every listener, so the source cannot resume through that path. Preserve the successful listeners’ progress, but retain a retry path for failed listeners.

A live query waiting for its first subscriber or preload still raised its source's subscriberCount and emitted subscribers:change. A Query Collection reads that as a request for live data and resubscribed its observers, which refetched a stale query with no consumer. Count only subscriptions that ask for data there; garbage collection still counts every subscription. Add a pinned oracle block and a Query Collection witness, and have the tests that watched an abandoned render or orphan hold its source read the retention count instead. Subscribing to an inner live query starts it, and its status handler can preload or subscribe to the outer live query before the outer registers its resume listener. The outer then stayed at loading with no request. After registering, resume at once when a request already arrived. React tests now observe a held source through its own short gcTime instead of a private member, which the minified-build check rejects. Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>
The React release tests pass a short gcTime through the helper, which already forwards it; declare it in the config type. Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>
Summary
A live query reads only local memory. Until now it could still start network work for its source collections with no consumer: a render that never commits, a Suspense render that throws, React StrictMode's extra render, or
